magicfly Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 i think you both need msn messenger at the same version and also the latest windows messenger installed...but it's only a suppose.. once i had this trouble and i solved that doing in this way and it was successful.just try and let me know bye
Datalore Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 Do you have a firewall enabled or is your connection routed through a router? If so, make sure you open Port 3389 as that is the port used. However, if you are using the Windows Messenger version of it, the ports are dynamic and shouldn't conflict. In that case, refer to what magicfly said and make sure both of you have the latest version of MSN Messenger. I would recommend doing Remote Assistance through the Help and Support Center.More information can be found here.
gamehead200 Posted March 31, 2004 Posted March 31, 2004 You need to be using Windows Messenger for it to work... Its kind of stupid, but its the only way!
ectavares Posted April 1, 2004 Author Posted April 1, 2004 How do I open the port 3389?thank you all!
Aaron Posted April 1, 2004 Posted April 1, 2004 Look up the "Port Forwarding" section in your Router's manual/documentation
ectavares Posted April 1, 2004 Author Posted April 1, 2004 I dont have a router.I do have Internet Security that has a firewall and I have my DSL modem but I disabled its firewall.
raskren Posted April 3, 2004 Posted April 3, 2004 MSN messenger is not the only way. I've used this many times on machines with messenger completely removed. There are a couple things that could cause this. The first thing I would check are required services and dependencies. Then do a netstat to see if Windows is listening on port 3389. If it is, then Remote Assistance is probably configured correctly. Then make sure that port is open all the way to the desktop. That is, hardware firewall>router>software firewall.
raskren Posted April 3, 2004 Posted April 3, 2004 Sorry, let me correct what I said.It sounds like the error is on your buddy's end. Apply everything I said in the previous post to the target machine. You shouldn't have to open the port on your end for this to work.Another issue is the dial-up account itself. Its probably a dynamic IP and changes everytime you re-connect with the modem. For this to work (email) you will have to reply to the invitation before the sender hangs up and reconnects (thus changing the IP).
gosh Posted April 3, 2004 Posted April 3, 2004 a lot of misinformation. First, you don't have to use messenger at all. RA is installed by sessmgr.exe, it creates the RA account. To use RA you can use any version of messenger, outlook express, or your friend can copy and paste the invitation to you.Disable the stupid windows firewall. If you suspect a software firewall is causing the problem, simply boot both computers into safe mode w/ networking, no firewalls will run in that environment, and you'll still have network access.Next, verify basic connectivity. Get your friends ip address and ping him. If that fails, do a trace route. Now remember that it has to have the right ip address. If your friend reboots or signs off dialup, you'll need to get a new invitation. To make sure you have the right ip open the invitation in notepad. And of course verify the HelpAssistant account isn't disabled or removed.http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/wxprmass.htm-gosh
