submix8c
Post 42 has no url so i google it and it brought me back to mfsn where there was an MGDX mirror where i downloaded AP2007.EXE is this correct? i know ie 6 and dx9 can be DLed with a google search.1 - read above post2 - already included (get it and look it over) There's a lot of "extras" included. Many of which will need updated (again, look at the contents and learn some BAT scripting).P.S. - AutoPatcher98 will not run from CD-ROM without modification (a different project). It's not necessary to actually run the Installers - they are created with Inno Setup and can be extracted with the Universal Extractor (links on MSFN somewhere or Google it). Just extract both then cut/paste contents of second over top of the first - Voila!BTW, for those looking at the latest 98SE Service pack, you could compare the two to help decide (haven't tried it yet but looks promising...).Note - UBCD does not include most "extras" - its intent is to just get you "up-to-date" (as of the last release). And a note... I wouldn't trust the contents of the Win98 folder - USE YOUR OWN!!!! (At first glance, it looks "fishy"...) I'll dig around (later... busy repairing relatives' PC's right now) and see what the difference is between it and the previous version (untrammeled)...Edit - No OFFICIAL UBCD included the contents of WIN98 folder. v4.60 was a Full set. v4.61 was an Update and included the Driver Packs. v4.62 was an update. Apparently I missed v4.7. V4.8 was a full set. v4.8 mentioned above is apparently a conglomerate of "official" (just mentioned) and some other files in the Win98 folder(?) so again, BE FOREWARNED! - Rather not beat up on UBCD too much until a later date. Just use it as an EXAMPLE for you project for now - Don't ask any further questions about this as I have no knowledge of the reason for the Topic being removed and Mods/Supervisors won't respond. CLOSED! -edit2 - ANOTHER FOERWARNING! The WPI is a "special" version by Kel for this project. DO NOT use any other version!!!!edit3 - (cough) additional modules (cough) that may not be trustworthy. Best bet... AVOID IT until further notice. Stick with the "Update" packages instead... Edited October 20, 2011 by submix8c
JorgeA
If several people are interested I might start going through it this weekend and see what I have here, post a list, see what needs to be further updated and eventually upload stuff somewhere, I guess having a few downloads for official updates and linking to MDGx's site for unofficial stuff.Count me in as one who's interested! We never know when we'll have to reinstall the OS.BTW, many of the updates may be USA English. It'll be helpful if all of the files in the package are in the same language and materials in other languages are separated out, to avoid surprises. submix8c
...in the same language and materials in other languages are separated out...That would be real nice for those non-English as the packs available so far on MSFN are in almost all English. Steven W
It'll be helpful if all of the files in the package are in the same language and materials in other languages are separated out, to avoid surprises.Perhaps I should have been a bit clearer, they're either USA English or some International version that includes USA English. I'd suspect mostly just USA English. As for users preferring or needing other languages, perhaps once we get all the info straight, someone could put together downloads for said languages. Steven W
Okay, looking at this CD I have things divided up, Bear in mind this stuff was for 98SEThe first thing I did is install IE 6 SP1 (install separately)Next, I have an update package that includes (listed in the order that I have the BAT file installing them):811630USA8.EXE823559USA8.EXE323172USA8.EXE273991USA8.EXE259728USA8.EXE256015usa8.exe245729us8.exe238453US8.EXEq313829.exeWindows98-KB891711-ENU.EXE323255USA8.EXE329115USA8.EXE888113USA8.EXEWindows98-KB896358-ENU.EXEIE-KB891781-EN.exeWindows98-KB908519-ENU.EXEWindows-KB913433-ENU.exeMSJav.exeOE6.0sp1-KB837009-x86-ENU.exeIE6.0sp1-KB916281-Windows-98-ME-ENU.exeIE6.0sp1-KB918439-Windows-98-ME-ENU.exeWindows98-KB918547-ENU.exeWindows9X-KB917344-enu.exeInstMsiA.exeThen I have MDAC_TYP_281.EXE (install separately)Then WMP 9 (install separately)Then I have one more package with the following files242975USA8.EXE243450USA8.EXE260067USA8.EXE273017USA8.EXE 4756us8.exeeuro.exeMSagent.exe Nm30.exeMDAC_Fix.exeWindowsMedia9-KB917734-Win9x-ENU.exeWM9Codecs9x.exewmp6cdcs.exevbrun60sp6.exeVisualBasic6-KB896559-v1-ENU.exeJet40SP8_9xNT.exedotnetfx.exeDXSETUP.exe (see note below)START.WAV (see note)unicows.dll (see note)unicows.pdb (see note)Note I have the DirectX setup extracted in this folder, DXSETUP.exe starts it. The BAT file copies Start.wav to the Windows\Media folder and the unicows files to both the system and system32 folders.I'm going to look through everything else I have and see if what's there is official or not.I think these are official too:KB904706-DX9-ENU.exegdidettool.exeMSGAMES.cab (some kind of update for sol.exe, freecell, winmine, mshearts, and cards.dll)IE6.0sp1-KB823353-x86-ENU.exe273727usa8.exeMicrosoft xml CORE SERVICES (MSXML) 3.0 Service PACK 5Microsoft xml CORE SERVICES (MSXML) 4.0kb887606_msxml4.0_x86.exeand a couple of vcredist_x86.exe (I believe the latest on the CD is 2005).After going through this stuff, I realize that I later made some modifications and saved it on another CD that got destroyed, I could really kick myself. A few things that I can see:MSAJAVA isn't necessary and should probably be removed from any system. The DotNet Framework is version 2.0, obviously not necessary and I believe there's at least a SP1. Start.wav came from the Start Sound Navigation Update, I found it easier just to copy the file then use the update. Same with Unicows, just easier to store in my zip and copy the files. Netmeeting should probably just get yanked from any system too, I'm sure using it is another necessary risk. I'm going to check the unofficial updates that I have and just link to MDGx's site (he'll probably have newer versions anyway). bphlpt
@PROBLEMCHYLD - Sorry to ask what is probably a dumb question, but could you please remind me why your newest pack does not include IE6 and its updates? Also, when I look at MGDX's site I get overwhelmed with all the choices, even though I appreciate having the options when necessary. That's why I really love the idea of your newest update pack project. So after using your pack, what other unofficial choices are left that you did not include and when would they be appropriate to use as well? Are there others that should NOT be used with your pack due to conflicts etc? I assume that 98SE2ME would not be appropriate, but Revolutions Pack? Is the latest KernelEX included? Can/should it be used with your pack? Sorry for the noob questions, but I've got a friend with a old system that this might be perfect for.Cheers and Regards Edited October 21, 2011 by bphlpt

Some people use IE6, IE5, and some don't. (IE is not mandatory)The main objective of this SP3 is to have everything that is needed for future installations. Therefore, you only have to check what is needed and have a fully updated system.I'm working on a final build, but I need more feedback from others before I go any further.Anything that requires KernelEX will NOT be added.Things that won't be addedInternet ExplorerVisual StudioVisual C++ Visual BasicMicrosoft Data Access ComponentsJet 4.0.NET Framework VC_R_70.EXEVC_R_71.EXEVC_R_7X.EXEVC_R_9X.EXEVCREDI.EXEVCREDIST.EXEVS6SP6U.EXEThings that are left to add (some will make it, some won't)CMD.EXEDCM9XCFG.EXEDMA_ON.EXEDST_9XME.EXEHELPHLP.EXEIEXPRESS.EXEMAKECAB.EXEMAKECAB.OVLMSAGENT.EXENUSB.EXESCBASE.EXESETUP_C2171F2DDB41E6F39078294DFEFC909933E4A23C.EXETTFEXT.EXEUSB20DRV.EXEWEXTRACT.EXEWIA11.EXE Edited October 21, 2011 by PROBLEMCHYLD
JorgeA
Also, when I look at MGDX's site I get overwhelmed with all the choices, even though I appreciate having the options when necessary. That's why I really love the idea of your newest update pack project. I have the same reaction to MDGx's site -- it's wonderful to have this available, but the impression I get when I go there is that there are far too many choices, each one seemingly telling me that it contains "all" of the latest "essential" updates, hotfixes, etc., plus unofficial updates. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that I'm wrong about the facts, but I am not wrong about the impression I get when I visit the site. It's just confusing -- there is a lot to sort out, and I don't know what's what.Personally, I'd like to see one single pack that would take Win98 and/or Win98SE (I use both, on different computers) from its fresh-install state to the end of the official Microsoft Updates in July 2006 -- and then a completely separate single pack that contains whatever improvements and fixes that people outside Microsoft have come up with since then. (For all I know, these are already available there, but I can't tell for sure. Maybe the site just needs to be reorganized in an easier-to-follow manner.)Ideally, the "up till 2006" pack would enable the user to selectively install updates, just the like original MS page did. (For example, I'm not necessarily interested in installing the Turkish or Korean language help packs.) But the most important thing is to have the official MS updates clearly labeled and kept separate from the unofficial updates.--JorgeA Edited October 21, 2011 by JorgeA

Steven W
JorgeA, I agree an all-in-one update would be nice. That's kind of what that AutoPatcher is that someone's mentionting is, but it totally screwed my system in the past. I don't necessarily think it's the best approach to take. The stuff mentioned in my post (#65) above were what I downloaded around the time MS stopped supporting Windows 98 SE.I should mention Gape's service Pack has always worked well for me, but it doesn't have *everything*.
