Windows 98/Me on MSI K9A2GM-F V3 Mainboard

Hello!

This board ist great! But now to my own personal experiences with Windows 98/Me in the last weeks:

I tried to install Windows 98 Se on the above board and everything went fine, until Windows wants to load for the first time. There I received a bluescreen with a 0E error. Then I deactivate the onboard SATA-Controller in BIOS, use an IDE-Harddisk and make another try. But unfortunately I am not successful ... :(

Windows 98 Se gives still the same Error ... Ist there any chance to get it running on this board? Has anyone an idea?

The board uses an ATI/AMD 690 Chipset and i used a X800 GTO graphics card and an old PCI Soundcard, which had a native Driver for Windows 98SE.

Also I turned off the network controller, as i dont want to go into the internet.

Then I make try with Windows Me ... And I wonder ... I am successful!

But my DVD-Rom (also an IDE one) was in compatibility Mode, which kills some of the performance of Windows Me.

And i tried everything to fix it ... but failed ... Then I also installed Windows XP SP3 on the Hard Disk and I wonder the second time ...

The drives in Windows Me weren't no longer in compatibility mode! They were in 32-Bit mode!

Now I am lucky with Windows Me, but would also like to install 98 Se, if someone has an idea. Because I read all over the internet, that Windows Me is not be as stable as 98se with the latest patches. Is this true?

Oh, one last word to the performance: The amd Athlon II X3 processor with one activated core at 2,9 ghz makes playing in Windows Me to a new level of experience for me and I noticed no instability of Windows Me so far. :thumbup

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hello!

Thanks for your reply

I tried it already with 4GB (no chance, it still gives the same error or reboot) and with 1GB (Windows Me runs on it like a charme, but 98SE failed).

Unfortunately I don't have a 512 MB RAM DDR2-DIMM to test it with 512 MB RAM. 1GB was the lowest I could buy in my local computer store.

Is there any chance to install Windows 98SE with 1GB?

I have read in the Internet that Windows 98SE should run with 1GB.

Is this true?

Or is the Problem that the Board has a PCI-Express Slot, in which my GFX-Card sits in?

Windows Me has no problem with it.

Best Regards and many thanks in advance for your answers, because i would like to install my old Win 98SE ... I am a retro fan ...

RLoew's RAM patch can be used to solve this problem, and will allow you to use all 4 GB of RAM.

Does anybody know why WinME can recognize 1gb out of the box but Win98SE can't ?

They are so close.

Windows ME has a slightly better Memory Manager.
