jaclaz Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 I hope someone will answer this. I got no replies from a previous post.Unfortunately I doubt this will happen. This:How do I stop Windows from re-installing the Windows NT directory?appears like a question aimed to telepaths or clairvoyants, that usually do not post on the board.... With reference to this:http://homepages.tesco.net/J.deBoynePollard/FGA/problem-report-standard-litany.htmlWe are right now at the "I'm ill, doctor. Help!" stage. Please provide some meaningful details, as-is the question is not understandable, let alone answerable. jaclaz

Ponch Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 How do I stop Windows from re-installing the Windows NT directory?that dir should be.C:\Program Files\Windows NT What do you mean by "reinstalling" the directory ? Recreating it ? What's in it at first ? How did it start ?Is this Windows XP (this is the XP forum) ?
luke77 Posted August 19, 2010 Author Posted August 19, 2010 You will need to turn off windows file protection.WFP can't be turned off in Sp3. (unless you know of a patch)
Tripredacus Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 If this is a case where you delete a file or folder, and it reappears because it is "protected" then you have only one choice. You would have to delete the backup file AND the actual file. The same is true if you are trying to replace files, like hacked screensavers. Your best bet is to boot into another OS that can read NTFS, like WinPE (you'll have to change ACLs) or NTFSDOS. Linux can do this too I think. But why is this a big problem? Do you just want to hide it? You could also change the ACLs on the folder itself, then delete the contents. I've done ACL trickery on viruses to stop them from working. For example, if you remove all right for the SYSTEM account, any functions that Windows carries out using that account on that object will not work anymore.

jaclaz Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 Reread my post. It says nothing about re-installing directory etc.I did re-read it, but still it seems to me like some vague reference to re-installing a directory is present:How do I stop Windows from re-installing the Windows NT directory?jaclaz
