Cumulative time zone update on Windows 2000

I regularly check blackwingcat's blog, and apparently there is a new time zone update that can be applied to Windows 2000 with some fiddling. However, even with Google Translate I can't make heads or tails of the instructions. Would anyone be able to clarify what to do?

Instead, open HIVESFT.INF

find "Time Zones"

Delete all the crap there

add this

If you want to just use it right now, add it to an INF file, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc.

* At first extract Timezone Update.exe with /X option.

* get updfix.exe on my blog.

* get from 2005y to 2006y any update.exe.

* apply updfix.exe to update.exe.

* overwrite to Timezone update\Update.exe

* execute update.exe

* finish !

First download time-zone editor form MS -- TZEDIT.EXE

Then you need to change a couple of dates, instructions are here:

The time zone updates on that site are two years old, Browncoat. Microsoft has released high priority time zone updates two or three times per year for supported operating systems, with the latest update being KB979306. Other updates are released as changes occur, which seems to be around every other month. The latest cumulative time zone update Microsoft has released is KB981128, but it has not been pushed through Automatic Updates or the Windows Update website.

as long as my TZ is correct I won't worry. (what are the '98 users in the other sub-forum doing about it?)

All the more reason to go Linux. The only stumbling I'm having there is getting KeepassX or K Wallet

to run as smoothly as SignupShield Suite does in Windows, meaning manual editing of the password databases.

I'm sure somewhere the easy unofficial patch writers will catch up.

It's not that simple, Browncoat. While there are 24 hours in a day, and 360 degrees of longitude can be divided into 24 equal 15 degree sections, Windows XP lists 99 valid time zones. The various reasons for this are:

• Some zones use full hour offsets from GMT, while others use half hour offsets.
  
• Some zones recognize Daylight Savings, others do not.
  
• Daylight Savings time shifts can occur on different dates and times in different zones.
  
• Daylight Savings time shifts can be greater than or less than the typical 60 minutes when in effect.

MDGx made a patch for Windows 2000 that delivers the update via the registry. I understand that the settings (in the .reg file contained in the update) are taken from an up-to-date Windows XP SP3 Pro.

I'm ashamed as a Canadian not knowing this, or maybe have known it and forgotten,

after all, it was a Scots-Canadian engineer who came up with Standard Time

in the 1800s!

So I've replaced text from:

HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Time Zones",,0x00000012

to:

.... West Asia Standard Time","Display",,"(GMT+05:00) Tashkent"

i.e. [AddReg.Upgrade] and later is stil there.

And I'm using http://www.vorck.com/windows/data/fdvfiles.zip , just downloaded, most recently modified is hivesys.inf (21-09-2009)

That gives the following (no settings changed so I should be in NY at GMT-6 or so). What's gone wrong?
