PROBLEMCHYLD Posted December 11, 2009 Author Posted December 11, 2009 I see your comment about tip top shape, Prob, and I have to ask, what role will your server play?Because honestly there are a lot of unpatched vulns. One reason is for my own personal server. The other my sister just passed the bar exam and is about to start her own firm. Also name one product from M$ that didn't have vulnerabilities. IMHOthere really is no safe Windows, some just has more problems than others.I'm not going to keep buying Windows Software just to have them not fix the stuff thats broke.WinXP/Vista/Windows 7 has vulnerabilities. You guys are just paying a lot more for them because i'm not.The retro versions of Windows do just what i need. I don't need all the fancy although i love the eye candy.
jaclaz Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 You guys are just paying a lot more for them because i'm not.Cannot say for other people here, but putting awergh, fdv and me in the "You guys paying a lot more" is unfair. Personally, besides being notoriously cheap , I am also one of the few that actually still USE NT4.00 normally:http://www.msfn.org/board/still-running-wi...56.html&hl=But of course new OS have new vulnerabilities, the old ones are boring..... but still dangerous. In other words, and of course IMHO:Is NT 4.00 a great, simple OS? Yes.Is it appropriate today as a server? No, unless you have a "vintage" machine that always ran it, with all the drivers for the hardware, and still you are exposed to some unpatched vulnerabilities.Would 2000 be better? Yes, because it has better hardware support and some added features.jaclaz

As for security, a good router might suffice (you did mention it was only for server purposes)... Edited December 12, 2009 by submix8c
PROBLEMCHYLD Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 (edited) Yes i do a have a Win 2000 Pro cd but i need it to be ran as a server and i don't know how that works. Can a Win 2000 Pro system act as a VPN server because i read only a server can act as a server. Thanks to you all. submix8c Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 (edited) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_networkOk, I kinda understand... Maybe a better question would be... what is the whole picture intent (e.g. what is the basic "equipment hookup", what are the basic "requirements", does it justify the need for VPN, etc?)... It might help in assisting with your setup with what tools you have available or can easily obtain.http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/overview.htmlhttps://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi2/Otherwise, ???? PROBLEMCHYLD Posted December 18, 2009 Author Posted December 18, 2009 Well I have some good news, my Dell C600 Latitude has NT4 Server drivers. I'm going to take Windows XP off and install NT4. Before I do this I want to install only the core system network/server drivers. I need someone to help me strip it down to the bare minimum, that includes all the service pack updates. I hope you guys understand what I am saying.

I hope you guys understand what I am saying. But what do you want to strip down more? When you set up NT4 you do have options what to install - just don't select anything you don't need (like ancient "wallpapers" or such).Don't select anything, and you'll have almost bare core NT4."i want to do is only installthe core system files meaning no IE, Direct X, Media Player etc..."none of it is ever installed, except for IE3 (which is harmless for as long as you install i.e. K-Meleon and set it as default browser, or you can remove it manually entirely).I suggest:Setup NT4Install SP6aInstall SRP1 (Q299444)doneThen do patching manually (either install post-SRP1 patches one by one, or extract them and combine their newer file versions into one single "superpatch" - it'll save you doing it again and again if you plan on doing similar installation in the future)

I think i got it from here. One more thing, how do I install it on a 80 gig harddrive?
awergh Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 I think the question is what file system do you want, if you want NTFS create a small 2GB partition and then once you have installed SP6a then use a partitioning program to extend the partition to full size.If you want FAT32 I think you will need to create a FAT16/NTFS Partition NTFS about 2GB, FAT16 almost 4GB, and then install the FAT32 driver for NT4 and format a FAT32 partition as the big partitionYou could i guess use lots of FAT16 Partitions but that might not be good to have 19 Partitions
PROBLEMCHYLD Posted January 26, 2010 Author Posted January 26, 2010 (edited) I"ll try to use NTFS as suggested by awergh. PROBLEMCHYLD Posted February 3, 2010 Author Posted February 3, 2010 I made a list above of the NT4 Server files. Are there any files I need to delete/add from the list?I'm not sure what files I need to keep or delete because I'm new to the Server life.
