joe43wv Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Our tape backup drive has died at work and needing to know if there is a difference because I found one and if it works I'm going to buy it. I just need to know if it's compatible or not. The shop that has it is an hour away and I don't want to waste my time if it doesn't work.
anonymous_user Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 (edited) According to this page, Ultra2 LVD has 68 pins.However Ultra SCSI 2 & 3 also has 68 pins. Edited June 17, 2008 by anonymous_user
puntoMX Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Ultra Wide SCSI, SCSI-3 SPI, 68-pin, 20 MHz, 40 MB/sUltra2 Wide SCSI, SCSI-3 SPI-2, 68-pin or 80-pin (SCA/SCA-2), 40 MHz, 80 MB/sSo, it would fit on the cable but personally I would only use the same type of devices on the same cable, e.g. Only UW SCSI or UW2 SCSI.
Tripredacus Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 I definately DO NOT recommend using a slower drive on a faster controller. Who cares if you can get an adapter or it fits in the plug. You could possibly damage the drive by doing so. I've seen drives actually start smoking when put on a faster controller.
puntoMX Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 I've seen drives actually start smoking when put on a faster controller.Ow common, you must be kidding me. Never got it smoking here...
CoffeeFiend Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Never seen, or heard of that before either, on any controller interface, be it ST506, [P/S]ATA, SCSI anything, etc
cluberti Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 I've seen a drive catch on fire before, but it had nothing to do with the controller. We did actually remove it from the server and start the platters on fire in a pit.

Never got it smoking here...Well I got a Jaz 2GB Fast SCSI-2 drive on a Ultra SCSI-3 to start smoking... I think some controllers let you control the speed with jumpers or dip-switches.
joe43wv Posted June 24, 2008 Author Posted June 24, 2008 Thanks for the tips guys, I'll remember this if I run into it again. To give you an update, I talked it over with my boss the same day and she said to not worry about it because we're replacing that server in two weeks, so the server should be here any day now, and for now I have rerouted the backups to one of our other servers for time being. Thanks again guys for all your work.
