  1. My automatic login isn't working anymore since you bundled that useless google search popup. Next time I'll be visiting this board only after I get an e-mail from you stating there's no more popup. Good bye! Fixed below. Sorry for the inconvenience.
  2. Thanks but besides the fact that I don't understand any of those explanations, upon a quick look it appears it can't do what I need. ARP seems only able to resolve IP address based on MAC address, but I don't need the IP, because I already know it: it's the same as mine, that's why the network conflict occurs! What I need is something that would be able to retrieve at least computer name by scanning the IP class (or a wider range, if needed) for a given MAC address. I can only send a net send message based on computer name (and that only if I'm lucky).
  3. cro-man, I'm sorry but you didn't pay enough attention to my post. I downloaded that file three times now, using FlashGet (a download manager), because direct download from within the browser would have never worked. The download page advertises "multiple simultaneous downloads" and I tried with 5 jets per file, then with only one jet per file, which would simulate an ordinary browser download except that it has the resume capability (which is also reported as available by the site). That HTML code snippet posted by me should in no case appear in the body of a downloaded file. The only explanation would be that the resume feature is broken or the site has some timer that cuts out connections. Anyway, somehow 7-zip managed to extract the damaged file from one of the zips and I could read the procedure. It seems extremely simple now that I figured it out, but there's a show stopper: ResHacker cannot open 16-bit NE. And guess what: sysdm.cpl in Win9x is 16-bit NE. So that's about it. However - thank you for the well documented procedure, it may prove useful for editing some other 32-bit PE libraries, sometime. One word of advice: drop that host, it sucks. Happy holidays!
  4. There have been times when I had dozens of crashes and/or system freezes daily, while testing alpha builds of a certain application. Pushing the Reset button was a common task. Power outage was also common at that time. And guess what: my Win98SE is still there, with no format/reinstall/recovery, after 25 months. Do that to an XP machine and you'll switch to Linux in less than a week. An operating system is a frame. I need my system to run my chosen applications, not the OS and nothing else. Even if the hardware allows XP or 2k, I'd rather use the resources swallowed by the imperative antivirus and firewall on an NT system, for the running applications instead. Yes, I don't need AV nor firewall, and I'm connected to the Internet 24/7 and on a LAN. No, no router. Can you believe that? Why should I give up my freedom in exchange for a life of terror? MS know that. That's why they're doing everything they can to force users abandon 9x and "upgrade" to 2k/XP/Vista. They made a mistake: offered freedom to ordinary people and now they wanna take it back.
  5. I thought RapidShare was the worst possible host, but I was so wrong! I downloaded the darn tutorial twice, with FlashGet (otherwise I would have retried it a few hundred times with IE). It took me about half an hour each time (I know, my connection is bad these days, but still...). And after that, I get unpacking errors. FlashGet never got me corrupted files, even with hundreds of retries at one file. On the other hand, what the heck did you put in that rtf file to make it 36MB?! Here's what I found in the zip body (several occurences) instead of the actual data: Server: MediaFire-HTTP/1.038700 Connection: close <html><head><title>Loading...</title><script language="JavaScript"> <!-- function changecolor() { document.vlinkColor='BLUE'; document.linkColor='BLUE'; document.fgColor='#000000'; return; } //--> </SCRIPT> </head><body bgcolor=#FFFFFF text=#FFFFFF link=#FFFFFF vlink=#FFFFFF onload="setTimeout('changecolor()',5000);"><div name='loading id='loading'><B>The browser you are using does not support redirects...</b><BR><BR> Please click <a href='http://www.mediafire.com/error.php?errno=10&did=myiifjb2bs'>here</a> to continue. <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=http://www.mediafire.com/error.php?errno=10&did=myiifjb2bs"></div></body></html>
  6. Hi there. Sounds like the right place to ask my question, if you'll excuse my reviving this old thread. So, here it goes: I would like to install (as a multiboot) Win98SE, WinServer2003 and Linux (K/Ubuntu, openSUSE or similar) all on a 160GB HDD which is already split into 4 FAT32 + 1 Linux partitions. The BIOS (AWARD 6.00PG on a Jetway630CF board) would only "see" 137GB out of 160, due to bad (or no) implementation of 48bit LBA, chipset incompatibility or whatever else, and it's not gonna be fixed by the manufacturer (I already contacted them months ago), but that's not a problem - I can live with a few GB missing. For easy recovery/interaction between partitions, I would like to keep the Server2003 partition as FAT32. If anyone could offer a simple but thorough guide to accomplish such task, I would very much appreciate. Thank you.
  7. Excellent! I hope those links will be useful to more users, not only me. Thank you!
  8. • Foobar developers already scrapped Win9x support in latest builds. I'd stick with Winamp 5.x, which keeps up with the times while still keeping Win9x compatibility. • Daemon Tools 3.47 is the last version working on Win9x. Any 4.x version will not install. Preferred software: - Chun Sejin's Imagine -> Basic image browsing and editing - FreeRAM XP Pro -> Memory manager - Dependency Walker -> Application debugger - DM2 -> Windows enhancements - CDR Identifier & DVD Identifier -> Reports real CD/DVD manufacturer (useful to track fakes, if you value your backed-up data) - ScreenGrab -> Screenshot utility - Ad Aware -> Malware cleaner - Spyware Blaster -> Malware prevention - CodeStuff Starter -> Advanced Startup and Task Manager - TZ Connection Booster & TCP Optimizer -> Network connection improvement - Angry IP Scanner -> Network scanner - GSpot 2.52 b1 -> Video files analyzer, codec reporting - FlashGet 1.73 (1.80 has bugs under Win9x) -> Download manager - SlimBrowser -> browser; IE front-end - Nir Sofer's TurnFlash -> Enable/Disable Flash in webpages in one click - MP3 Tag 2.32a -> MP3 ID3 tag editor - Metapad 3.51 -> Notepad replacement The above are all freeware or open-source that I commonly use on my system.
  9. Slightly off-topic, please excuse me. It's been happening in the past a few times and since last night it's happening again: some guy on my LAN is spoofing my IP (trying to). Windows has been giving me a dozen message boxes, in time, showing his MAC address. My question is: how could I find his computer/user name based on MAC address, so I could at least try to send him a net send message? I tried Angry IP Scanner, but that one's based on IP scan and it doesn't catch the offending machine. Our admin is not in town right now and it gets annoying to see those message boxes pop up every now and then. I'm running Win98SE, so I hope someone knows some tool that works on my system. Thank you.
  10. Would that be possible in Win98SE too?
  11. Please excuse my slightly off-topic request. I would like to install Win98SE, Server2003 and Linux (K/Ubuntu, openSUSE or similar) all on a 160GB HDD [...] [EDIT] As suggested by McTavish below, I posted my request in this thread. I welcome whoever may offer some help on the matter. Thank you.
  12. Thanks, still downloading; low bandwidth now, during holidays. One suggestion, though: could you somehow add an eD2k download link for the package? Personally I'm sick'n tired of all the advertising choking this world. Besides, the download page requires javascript enabled - which some people might not like - and a certain amount of time to wait until one can actually start the download. As I run eMule almost 24/7, it'd be much easier to add the package to the downloads list with a single click, than go through all that - let's say - trouble. Thanks again and have a Merry Christmas (or what's left of it, considering timezones).
  13. If you perform a simple search, you'll see that Intel 430 chipsets only support 128MB of RAM at most, EDO or FPM (some boards do have at most 2 SDRAM slots); PC133 sticks just don't fit. Next issue is that eBay is not accesible to me here for various reasons. Again, searching would reveal that SiS630 chipsets have integrated graphics (SiS300). Added to this, the mobo has no additional AGP slot (Jetway630CF). And yes, I got the latest available drivers, which are dated sometime 2004. Regarding Linux fonts, I may try your antialiasing tip someday, but as I have a CRT monitor here, I don't think it would help much, if at all. Lastly, keyboard layout... maybe I'm the only romanian trying out K/Ubuntu after a long Windows experience?! Because I've been searching those forums (very chaotic boards, if I may) and couldn't find anything remotely related to that. Also similar requests for different layouts were left open or received cryptic answers.
  14. Yeah, I just installed XP on a spare PentiumMMX @ 200MHz with 128MB of RAM (Intel 430TX chipset) and it runs very well... not. What do you say, should I do that for my other 200MHz MMX with only 64MB RAM or the Pentium 166MHz with 32MB RAM (both Intel 430VX chipset)? I bet they would fly... out the window. I had Win98SE and Server2003 dualboot on this current machine (Pentium III @ 800MHz, SiS630 chipset) before my old HDD crashed. While 98SE was literally flying, 2003 with most services disabled (which took me a lot of time for searching documentation, applying and testing) was crawling. One application at a time, otherwise I would've brought it to its knees. Guess what I'm running now on my new 160GB HDD... Yeah, 98SE only. Regarding Linux, I played around for a bit with Ubuntu and Kubuntu 6.06 in live mode. While Ubuntu was freezing after some time while doing nothing special but tweaking some settings, Kubuntu has been running fine for hours, after tweaking the very same settings. But there are two major drawbacks that I see in Linux: 1. Fonts are absolutely crappy, I mean I couldn't find not even one font that would largely resemble what I'm used to from Windows, and that Firefox browser... ugh, it makes me sick the way it looks and works (no flames intended) with those ugly fonts. 2. I couldn't for the life of me get my Romanian keyboard layout to look/work exactly as in Windows. I've been using the RO layout ever since Win95 although it was a pain to set it in the version of 95 I had here, and I expected to be able to have it work identically in Linux. However, that was not possible at all. And this made Linux a no-no, for me.
  15. Try playing with TZ Connection Booster and TCP Optimizer.
  16. Here are some screenshots for the tests in Miranda IM. They are self-explanatory. The options on the settings page were exactly the same for both tests. First test was run with riched20.dll v5.30 installed in %system%, while for the second test I just dropped riched20.dll v5.40 in Miranda's main folder.
  17. Not being a programmer but merely a tester/user, I couldn't offer specific technical details, but during testing one of the plug-ins created for Miranda IM - namely spellchecker - I noticed that the wrong words that should have been marked with red wave, dotted, thick or other kind of underscore were only marked with thin line having the same color as the font. Replacing RichEdit v5.50 with v5.40 exhibited the same behavior. Downgrading to v5.30, the underscore immediately started to behave normally as selected in the plug-in's options. So this is not a problem of wrong characters being displayed, but rather one of missing/wrong features. One other issue that I noticed was in the official eMule client: on the Servers page, at the bottom, there's a tab called "Server info". In there it's a link called "Click HERE to check for a new version" (or similar). With RichEdit v5.40 or 5.50 installed, the link was not clickable, there was only a line of simple text. Downgrading to RichEdit v5.30 fixed that issue too - the line became a link again, that would open the project's main page in the default browser. Bottom line is that it may be possible to be a bad implementation of some features in certain applications, where programmers have used only RichEdit v5.30 (at most) to test them. But it may also be that RichEdit versions above v5.30 have different implementations of some functions (or even bugs, why not?) that make them slightly incompatible with previous ones. After all, if those versions would have been 100% safe and compatible, I suppose MS would have shipped them as system upgrades. Instead, they preferred to ship them only with the Office suite, which may offer a clue regarding their limited compatibility. Anyway, this is just a supposition of mine, so if anyone knows better, please disregard my posts on the matter. Petr: Miranda IM is open-source and so are it's plug-ins (with very few exceptions). You're welcome to test it in any combination you wish, to confirm or deny my allegations. Please note that some of the alpha-staged plug-ins can only be found in their dedicated forum threads. Personally I've used a nightly v0.7 build for testing, available from the Development page.
  18. I agree with having them all in one pack. After all, the files are not that big (around 1MB each or so) and there still are applications that do not provide them optionally. I'm thinking about gdiplus.dll being added, as it's needed by some newer applications (I know for sure some of Miranda IM's modules need it). However, you will have to pay attention to VC2005, because that one is a lot different than the previous ones: it creates %windir%\winsxs with a few subfolders and installs its stuff there instead of %windir%\System. While VC6/7 can simply be dropped in the System folder even without registration, the VC2005 files will never work that way. Also a good idea might be upgrading RichEdit (riched20.dll) to 5.30.23.1226, as it may be needed by recent applications. Personally I tried to use a more recent version of it (5.40.x.x and 5.50.x.x) but I found them to be faulty regarding a few functions while testing in Miranda IM, so I had to downgrade to 5.30.x.x, which is working fine for me. Speaking for myself, I think the biggest, the supreme achievement for all 98SE users would be to have absolutely all possible updates/upgrades/patches/whatnot in one single pack - be it a modular or integrated one - and best of the best, integrated with the Unattended Boot Disk project, so that everything would be on one single CD, installable when selected in the UBD menu. But that would require cooperation between certain wise people around here. Could that be achieved? I surely hope so. Because time is running away, and Win9x is dying a bit day by day...
  19. Nice idea of a plug-in, but after installing it, when trying to open an exe it crashed my TotCmd. It might need some updating.
  20. So many thoughts running through my mind... My opinion is that MS will not take a step towards prosecuting any alleged copyright breakers here unless they feel seriously threatened. And I believe this will never be the case. Why? First reason is because of (almost) natural selection: old hardware that allows running any of the 9x versions of Windows is slowly dying. No matter how great the efforts to maintain those systems - be them unofficial service packs, patched libraries/kernels, etc. - soon the day will come when the current functional hardware will simply refuse to install those OS versions. Second reason is because the software released currently and in the future will be bound to NT-specific libraries that would make them unusable under 9x systems, no matter how upgraded and patched. Obviously, most fields of activity will require the newest software versions - you may run Win98SE 10-20 years from now (assuming you'll still have compatible hardware for it), but when you won't be able to open documents created with Office 2007+, watch media created with WMP 11+, burn CD/DVDs with Nero 7.5+ or browse websites optimized for IE7+, you'll face the choice of giving up computers forever or find a suitable alternative. It's that 'suitable alternative' that we should think about, right now. As long as current and future hardware and software are intentionally created to only support NT-based OSes, and keeping in mind that Win2000 and XP will soon 'kick the bucket' just like their not-that-older 9x brothers, logic and common-sense tell me that efforts should be channeled towards developing a Vista+ compatible open-source OS. It's only then that MS will blow steam off their ears and send out their army of jackals in a furious attempt to stop the freedom movement, because that would be the only real challenge for them. Until then, creating and maintaining all kinds of unofficial patches, service packs, updates and whatnot is like injecting morphine to terminal-phase cancer patients. All that said, I have to mention that I have the deepest respect and admiration for all the people out here that voluntarily offer their time, knowledge and efforts, day by day, to keep our beloved dying 9x systems still alive for as long as possible. As mentioned in a previous post, I myself am a Win98SE user and in no way am I trying to mock these people's work; on the contrary - I'm trying to help them with my little knowledge and testing, whenever possible. But time has come for us to broaden our horizons and look forward to the future.
  21. Don't forget the essential ingredient: a Bullet-time button on the keyboard. Because by the time the assumingly handful of part-time disassemblers/reversers/coders would finish open-sourcing Win98SE, the army of MS programmers would have released a couple of other OS versions that would even be incompatible with Vista and any 32-bit CPU. Given that most software producers already forgot about Win9x (probably intentionally or forced) and the old hardware is dying (you wouldn't expect nowadays' HW to last 50 years as the old one did, would you?), you'll only end up with grey hair, wasted time and an obsolete Win98 perfect clone. You see, I have no issues with IF and HOW - when there's a will, there's a way; my only question is WHY? But don't mind me, I'm just... nobody.
  22. Eck: AFAIK, the official explorer.exe is in %windir% only (usually C:\Windows). I suggest you remove any other copies of it from your system (rename or delete them) and only place the appropriate one (the one with the newer icons, if that's what you want) directly in the Windows folder (%windir%). You'll have to do that in DOS mode.
  23. Am I too deep? Let me try again: here's a quote from X2 - X-men united, a talk between Kurt Wagner and Mystique:- Excuse me... They say you can imitate anybody, even their voice. - [imitating his voice] "Even their voice" - Then why not stay in disguise all the time? You know... look like everyone else. - Because we shouldn't have to. Steven W: so this is all about DRM, isn't it? MS wants to stick a tag to my ear, hang a cowbell onto my neck and watch each and every step I take. Well, I'll refrain from expressing all the nice words that come to my mind related to this and I'll just say: "no, thanks".
  24. Modifying a cable is not that easy, as you would have to replace the RJ45 outlets each time. You can find documentation on Standard ad Cross-over cables here. As for Nero's multisession, I don't know what to say, it always worked for me in v5.5, 6.0 and 7.0. Not sure if it could have something to do with your particular burner hardware, I tested with a TEAC CD-W552 CD-burner and a Samsung SH-S182D DVD-burner. Just make sure you don't mix sessions burned with different types of software. I had some multisession CDs destroyed long time ago because first session was burned with Roxio and second one with Nero.
  25. Thanks, but that would be cheating. There's lots of software saying they don't support Win9x and when you mess with winver and make it report you're running 2k or later, they install and run flawlessly. It's like admitting myself as guilty to escape capital punishment in favor of life sentence, while in fact I'm completely innocent. Does that seem right?! I havent' messed much with my system (yet) except for a few system files that I had to upgrade. I'm testing an application in its alpha stage and I need the OS to be as basic as possible. Will upgrade it after I build a test machine. Meanwhile try subscribing to vh1.com and see if you can access their videos or whatever other online content linked to in their newsletters. I'm curious if you'll get rejected too.As for Y!MailBeta... Yahoo is vital for me to get replies from forums posts, friends, etc. I always rejected their upgrade offers, but I know there will come a time when it'll be forced upon us. I wonder which would be the needed system upgrades that'll allow running it safely on a 9x system. And how long will it take until Win9x will permanently be banned by everybody, heavily upgraded or not...
