Maybe instead of a reboot.. you just need to run Cacheman Memory Restore, and CCleaner..?

I'm thinking 98 is too "just plain"... it needs a few pep ups, by adding to its files features, litle cosmetic customizations.. like a software add on that allows the user to modify the border around file windows.. to make it look like a soft aura, or hard thick border outline... For certain kinds of creative writing, I'd like a deep cyan desktop splash, with a soft pastel cyan file aura border, and a slight hint of red background in the text file... For writing an angry response to an AH troll's post, I'd like a fire red composer background with deep purple splash... Take it up to the Max, I'd like the text page to flow like I saw IR and UV blending and flowing in a four inch diameter aura around a tiny flower, after a weird "accident" left me seeing like the bees see, for a day... 98 needs the ability to close parts of the tool bars... WinWall and SubDesktop give 98 a pleasant fix... It can change the desktop colors and pix to anything you desire... I wish we could trust those animated wallpaper downloads, but everyone I've tried forced me format C to repair the serious damages they did to the OS... Office assistant was fun for a week or two.. but after that I just wanted to pull einstein's head off, kick the dogy in the azz, and stomp on the dam cat, after pulling off its hundred tails... I want an icon factory, that enables me to create my own icons and cursors... I want a cursor that I can backclick to detonate into a huge explosion... I'd like to see a random file selector, that even digs into freespace... Click the icon, and you never know what yer gonna git... I'd like to have the options to add a symbol between words, that links to an internal header of links, sounds, pix, and data... Would make writing wicked posts more fun and more depth... The only thangs whatz stopping W98 from being modernized, is laziness, lack of money and greed for more, and lack of expertise... Has anyone started an "Evolve Windows 98" forum?.. It's hard to just let W98 go.. It's the very backbone of the Personal Computer... It's what got the ball rolling.. and the newer OS's seem to be full of all sorts of unsolved troubles, and expense... Many of us are still not ready for XP.. or maybe it's that XP isn't ready for us... Could windows start music be like Angel's trumpets?.. Maybe some would prefer death marches..? and others would prefer "taps"... and maybe something along the lines of "bat out of hell".. or the sounds of machine gun chatter, or a tank rolling by, or a wicked fighter jet flyby.. or an audience applauding..? or the sounds of Woman's purest free laughter... Thing is, if you want W98 fancied-up and evolved.. it happens by adding one little modification after another... The writers need to hear the ideas of what you want and expect... Fire up some of your super Creativity, and tell them what you need... I'm bettin' the exploding cursor will be a download within two months.. written by a couple of the world's best computer wizard geniuses.. most likely college kids... There's a whole subculture that loves explosions more than you loves sex, drugs, and rock'n roll...

Sounds like you are a computer wizard... I bet you could write your own OS... Please post any links that detail your system...

QUOTE: "The only time I remember having problems with Windows 98, was when I used Internet Explorer, as my primary browser. Now I use Opera, and, don't find my computer going haywire for no particular reason." I tried Opera, but didn't like it... I'm running SeaMonkey.. it's full of features you don't see with any other browser.. and it's FAST... http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=2173248& http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/ Or if you are a little gutsy and experimental in nature, try http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/sea...y/latest-trunk/ Agreed, IE is like a screen-door with big holes in it... I never use IE unless I have-to, for certain MSN downloads, which only work with IE.. otherwise I have "Tiny Personal Firewall" set to block all IE traffic, and pop up when something wants to connect to the Net, when the rule is bumped... I set TPF's rules as I go... Every PC in the world shouldn't be without TPF... I tried the two little softwares that claim to delete IE & OE from your machine.. but quickly found that deleting those integral softwares is deleting some of the needed integral portions of the Windows operating system.. and had to format and reload... You can't run Windows without IE & OE intact, but you can seal them up in Tiny Personal Firewall's little security box.. then nothing gets to contact the Net through TPF's blocking settings, unless you give your permission... TPF is the first to load after the desktop has started to load... I keep a copy of TPF on a floppy for reloads, and it's the first thing I install and config after the OS CD's... I even set TPF to block itself from contacting the Net.. and use BlackIce as my main firewall... ____________________________ QUOTE: "Dude I never had no harddrive thrashing, registry locking virus in 3 years I've owned a computer, and I pizz people off, a lot. What'd you do?" That's easy... I'm one hell of an outspoken antagonist.. battling this Species' growing mass mindlessness, and I really hate bullies... All my life I was super bullied.. and now I'm fighting back... I hit flamers so hard, that they have to run to mummy to get their diapers changed.. and they always run to the mods, whinning and sobbing... Surf "cosmicbrat" & "occultrush" to answer "What do I do"... The human intellect is devolving.. as if we are using teevee and the Media to do our thinking, and give us our opinions... I'm trying to wake the mindless Numbs to opening a little of their minds, so they'll realize what they are doing is gonna result in the planet running out of life.. so they will wake up, and stop destroying the planet, for future human generations to have their birthright... In this activity I bump into a lot of mindless gorillas out there in their hell on earth.. usually nutcase christians defending the faith by trying to destroy my PC's OS, to give me the 15 to 20 hours grief of reloading my software environment... I'm pushing for serious Change, while religion fears change, and stifles change, because they believe change doesn't include them... Surf: "cosmicbrat leo engel", and "occultrush", and http://www.hobartwelders.com/mboard/showth...28&page=2... I don't hold back anything when an apehead-bully starts flaming me... I get banned a lot for defending myself from kiddies and forum guard AH attack spiders... Seems it's ok for them to pizz in my face, but not ok for me to expose them for the AH's they are... The second last time my PC got big time slammed, I was in the MSN Hotmail login page, and had clicked on their "three thousand dollars a week easy money scam link", and form-posted to the guy that his piramid-scheme looked like a piramid-scam... Suddenly my HD went ballistic, and all my controls locked out... Pulling the plug didn't help in the slightest... I had to format-C to do anything... All he left me was my files to floppy feature... I lost all my cherrished edited pix... He had locked out Spybot, Regedit, BlackIce, Norton AVS, and pretty much everything else... That was what's called a "Slam"... Whomever it was, I'd like to go on a hunting trip with him, deep in the bush, where no one could hear his dying screams... The last time my PC's OS got slammed, I challenged a nasty mouthy mindless computer-wizard hacker, and sho-nuf my PC got hit way over the top.. but my provider who reads my emails as I post, arbitrarily reset my IP for highspeed Internet for a day, and the job of reloading went a lot faster and smoother... I haven't thanked them yet, so "Thanks folks"... It was worth it.. I taught the bully a very important lesson.. and maybe even put the kibosh on his attacking innocents, but at my time expense... Seems sometimes I have-to throw myself into the lion's arena to get something good done... _______________________

If you really want to see what's running in your computer.. load BlackIce firewall, and go into "advanced protection settings".. Take great caution to not make a mess in APS... or you'll be sorry... Modify only what you are sure about... You might want to place a thick pillow on your chair.. you are probably gonna be there a long time...

Mozilla forums are full of experts.. and lots of good data... The very best Windows instructional site is "Buds" in South America... -
"I'm keen on learning more about this. Where and how do you find what registry keys to delete?" Yeah!.. That's exactly what I've been looking for too... Problem is that everyones PC is loaded different, so their registry entries would be aliightly different... and when you think about it, most of those keys are in there because they are supposed to be, to make the computer run... but we do know that there's a lot of garbage in the registry... There are ugly keys you really do not want in your machine.. and that's what we want to remove from our PC's... Doesn't seem to be much on this topic out there in internet land... Forsure delete every key labelled macromedia and shockwave... and all the flash keys that are macromedia related... I do a regedit to delete all the ".com, .org, .net, .msn, .thht, " internet links, so my softwares don't slow the OS, nor spy on me... Sometimes I just delete a key to see what will happen... The worst one lost me my screen... I'm usually careful, but sometimes I delete keys I really shouldn't have.. that's how we learn on our own... We make mistakes, and correct them, and hopefully we don't do them again... Probably the best thing would be to get a scrap second PC from a garagesale for about 20-bucks... and mess it up learning what not to do... Some of my garagesale PC's even smoked bigtime while I was learning what not to do... One even blew the top off its pentium chip, exposing the gold wires and chip's inards, back when there were only 64 spyware trojans... I'm thinking that where you and I are now in learning the computer, our next plan of attack option probably must be to put in a good honest effort to study how the Window's registry actually works... It seems we need to run ourselves through a bit of an advanced computer course.. Or our messing in the registry will forever be like stabbing at an invisible beast in the dark, and only hurting ourselves... But I really hate reading books... I love writing, but I can't stand reading other author's stuff.. I find myself forever correcting their messes... When I read a novel, I read the last page, then toss it... The last page tells me that I really don't want to read that author's garbage... and the weird thing is, I was given a library of 40 computer refference books, worth a grand... Seems we all want to be "bottle & spoonfed"... We are growing lazier by the minute... I'm thinkin' I best be biting my lip, find a cozy chair, gather up some ellusive raw willpower, and open up a few of those very thick, extremely boring computer-books... oh sigh... Then there are the 4 microsoft OE cache keys that Reg Mech deletes.. and after a reboot, they're back... That one is really bugging me...

In W98 it's the aftermarket music softwares that be your worst vulnerable holes, unless you have installed All the security patches... But even then, don't be fooled into a false sense of security... An expert computer-wiz can still get in like a fly through an open window... There are holes that only a few know about.. their aces, against your two's... No matter what you do for armor, upset the big boys, and your OS is toast... In my scheme of things, trying to wake people up to opening their minds to a little more reality, to stop us from destroying the planet so hard, I bump into and upset those bully experts way too often.. and I'm formatting the OS at least every three months... I know they got me when the HD suddenly starts going ballistic, and all my controls are suddenly locked out... Pulling the plug doesn't help in the least... Sometimes I'm lucky, when a registry backup saves the day.. but most the times that doesn't do diddly, because included in their hit, my AVS, Spybot, and the firewall have already been jumbled or disabled, and the registry backup locked out... All I can do then is either listen to the HD destroy itself/or pull the plug, and switch on the old iMac.. and connect it to the router, while the PC is formatting... If I look at it in the positive.. at least they leave me enough working OS for me to get my files and pix to floppy, and it keeps my OS fresh... so maybe there's still a tiny spark of love in those hateful mindless gorillas... Thing is: In 1978 I was on a "Go west or bust" trip, driving west, with all my possessions in the truck, not knowing where I would settle... just driving in that direction... Something super clicked in my mind when I saw two huge meteorites cross a fiery "X" in the sky... In the next three hours, at the side of the road, I wrote and sketched the bench manual for a liquid electricity emitter, which later I figured would open the bonds of the inert elements, and would give us engines for floating/flying cars, and planetary defense weaponry... I tried three times to build it in the garage, but had a little accident, when my dad shone a penlight into the 3/4" crude barrel, and out came a goldish liquidish light ("fire-light"),which burned a couple holes clean through the back of his eye... He was lucky it wasn't completed... For safety concerns I had to shelf the project till I get use of a safe-lab... Since then I've contacted All the world's science majors, in an attempt to peg down use of a state of the art laser lab and lapidary lab, with absolutely no success... All I got was hundreds of remote viewers trying to suck the data from my mind while I slept.. and hundreds of hack attacks to my computers, from corporate pirates desperately trying to find and rob the data from my PC's... The data is Only on paper, in the 75000-pages so far... They even destroyed four PC's in their efforts to rob it... Seems that it's not worth anything to them unless they can steal it... I would have given it all to them freely, just for use of a lab, just to make this world a better place to live in... With the new inert element chemistry, we get the new plastics needed to grow our PC's, to be worn as skin grafts on our fore arms... The world refuses to join with me in this project... Seems I am being forced to take it to the grave.. means you don't get flying cars and skin-graft PC's in your lifetime... __________________ Seems that some anti-technology nutcase has decided that my "extremesciences webwork" must be stopped... by them destroying my PC's OS at every opportunity... It's like being in the northern wilderness, without repellent, nor screen, being hounded by a thousand blood thirsty four-inch long northern Canada Acadia-mosquitoes.. that cuss in four letter words.. wear studded black leather jackets, of bee-skin.. carry tiny switch-blades.. and spit on butterflies... Who ever from hell it is.. they send me two virus-emails per day, with fake names, and touching "hellos", or "hi friend", or "ebay workers needed", or "why the h haven't you contacted me about your ebay auction sale item that I won?".. They never mention what the item is.. and I don't have anything forsale on ebay anyway..., or they send come-on gimmicks to make lots of quick money... If I copy their emails without opening them, and place them on the desktop, then set them in trash, I get a popup, "Are you sure you want to delete this program?"... Now only if we had a security software that added that test to links, as we open them, and before they get into the OS... I'm guessing that it needs to be a router with its own CPU... a Super Router... a Super Dooper Router... a Magic Router... a killer router... Too bad we can't give the gorillas their own Battle-Internet... Then they could have their WW3&4 on their own battleground Internet, instead of perpetually feeding their evils to us unrelentingous, slow and steady... Heck! I could design e-weaponry for them... They could do all their lovely hate stuff electronically... and we could switch them off on sundays, if we dare enter-fear... Is anyone out there in h on earth, working on a super CPU-based router..? I might have a few good ideas to make your project succeed...

some software that should work on w98SE just dont work
KingAuther replied to HTS-500's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I had exactly the same problems after I installed the Windows 98se CD over the existing W98se OS and peripherals... I had to format and reload... Surf "Clean Install W98", and make hard copies before you format-C... Are you using a pirate OS CD?.. If you are, do an AVS scan on the boot floppy and CD, in another computer... It's always a good plan to use a fresh boot floppy... http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utiliti..._Boot_Disk.html When I reload the OS after a serious OS killer-mess, I always open the tower, and pull the battery for a half hour... It cleans out any nasties that got into the chips... Some of what I'm reading in these forums will be solved just by pulling the battery before reloading the OS... When you're in the tower, don't be touching chips and transistors with your fingers... Moss-Q's can't handle static from fingers... Make sure sloppy-wires aren't sitting on boards... Check the fans for free movement... Some of these problems I read are heat problems... I'm reading about a lot of unnecessary computer problems, many of which may well be a virus-poisoned OS CD, or a slightly damaged HD disk... Everyone should do a complete surface scan on their hard drives, at least once a year... HD's do wearout... -
Running W98se, 6-gig, 600mhtz, 128 ram, old Compaq desktop... I relabelled a huge Mozilla Suite Composer file, and suddenly it was totally messed-up with email symbols and tags... I tried reformatting the word file, and copying it, and resaving it several ways, but without success... I was forced to spend an hour editing out all the mess... Is there a way to repair this problem quickly?.. When I rename my downloaded pix, they become unstable, and only open with wordpad and notebook... I lose the pix... Can pix files be renamed without them becoming unstable?.. and if they do become unstable, can they be restored by some trick?..

Do a surface-scan on the HD to check for damage... "Power Defrag" does a surface scan...

What Firewall do you Use/Recommend?
KingAuther replied to Gouki's topic in Networks and the Internet
I really don't know what's wrong with that K-software.. but the moment I installed it I got a barrage of warning popups from all my security softwares, and lockups, and various strange never before seen computer-glitches... If it works for you, that's Super... It sure wasn't good for my old Compaq PC... I ended up having to format-C to repair the damage it did to the OS.. plus the 15-hours of reloading my preferred software environment... I have a Norton 2002 CD and BlackIce and Spybot... They have worked just fine for me... -
What Firewall do you Use/Recommend?
KingAuther replied to Gouki's topic in Networks and the Internet
BlackIce... It learns.. It watches and regulates everything to do with installing... It's light.. It's fast.. It's inexpensive.. It's made by good people.. It's honest.. It doesn't slow down the PC.. It works with SeaMonkey and Firefox.. It's compatable with W98se and Norton AVS.. It's easy to configure.. and it hasn't let me down yet... I too tried that kasperwhoozits... and uninstalled it five minutes later... It came with trojans, locked up the OS twice, and did things that I still don't have proper names for... -
Sounds like a blocked cookie or website... check your browser prefs... If I had that problem, I'd download a fresh browser, uninstall the old one, and do a find and regedit, seek and destroy of everything to do with that browser... then I'd run my registry cleaners, and bug cleaners, and restart before installing the new download... I save my browser download on the desktop for this purpose.. and sometimes, when I'm leaving the PC for several hours, I click to download the newest download of that browser, to maintain the download file fresh...
-
I didn't know that the bigger newer OS's were so screwy... I was dreaming of one day stumbling on a newer PC with a newer OS.. but more and more it seems that W98se is the way to go... What is W98se like in a new fast big state of the art computer?.. Maybe by adding the new tweaks, and various aftermarket updates.. it's not so much W98se, as it is W98te...

Sit in front of a CRT for five years... then try a flat screen.. and suddenly you feel like what ever has been beating you up for five years has finally stopped trying to kill you...

Quoting: "Here is a tip.. Steer clear of this software: UMBPCI, QDMA, and QCDROM." Is there tiny chance that the problems you experience in that, might just be software conflicts between those softwares and macromedia, or with any other bad combinations you have in your PC..? given that Macromedia is so knitted and active into the OS.. about as bad as the aforementioned sneaky little downloads mgr... Is there a software that 100% cleans out an unwanted install's registry set?.. Is there a software to determine if two softwares share conflict?.. like maybe a software that slams them two together, then tests a sensitive chain of commands..? I'd call that "TWEAKING!"... When is someone gonna build an OS that can be downloaded in blocks off the Net..? ..so the user can build his own system from a thousand possibilities... We will need this multifaceted OS when we've developed the required inert element plastics to grow PC's, and wear them as skin-grafts, fed by inerts added to the blood... I figure a multifacet OS could be configured to learn.. and to build software on demand... I would simply ask the software, "Is there a software that 100% cleans out an unwanted install's registry sets?", and it would work on growing the path.. Is there a software that adds a link symbol, to a sentence, in a letter, at a word, which the symbol link links-to a subheader, with links to pix, descriptions, tangents, and the like... to make creating a thesis informative as possible, and a lot of fun... and reading it even more fun... ["links-to"; verb; therefore "links" & "to" must be combined, to establish the verb properly, in/to comply in the efficient form of the English Language... I propose, "linkths"...] Still in topic, an OS that grows its own software would probably be about as "tweaked" as it gets... Still in topic, but a little deeper into the computer OS.. "Extreme tweaks"... ...I was standing in a morning forest... when a small bumble-bee flew in my ear... and got stuck in the bend... and was trying desperately to backout.. each time digging in its now leaking stinger... I figured, "digging it out with a tiny stick" was not an option... mean time, bug is pushing forward, then backing up and sticking me repeatedly... I needed to tell the bug that it needs to lift up the stinger, hold it up, and then backout... so I spoke it, but it didn't get the message... I had to take it up a notch... Already it was the worst experience of my whole life... I needed telepathy... but I had to be relaxed to do it... When I closed my eyes, I saw a mental visual of a huge ball of electrical "wool" at my forehead... I had to quiet that huge mess to get relaxed... When I did.. I telepathed to the bee.. "We lift our bum as high as we can.. and hold it up, and backout.".. The bee lifted its bum, and backed out... I had to sit.. My ear feeling like a little fire was roaring inside.. and my face and brain feeling the venom's travel... My spine shooting wicked hot rushes/alternating icy cold chills... Half my face stinging in the veins... and very difficult to hold my head up... A most wicked experience... If you are curious to know they immensity and intensity of it.. stuff a bee in yer ear... ..The physics of that telepathy to the bug is what obsoletes the mouse and keyboard... Now That I'd call real TWEAKING!... which is probably about as tweaked as tweaks get... but then there's more.... I would really like to hear how to make a copy of the HD, to instantly reload, the moment the OS even "hicups"... That alone would be the greatest 21st century efficiency-tweak.. if most everybody could do it quick and easy... like if they could drop in a CD.. and it loads, and makes the necessary HD ghost...

"I have no glitches or lockups, and 98 runs fast as hell." What's your secret?.. "Flash runs fine but I can't get my global settings to stay put anymore, I set them to block all junk and then I go back and it's right where it was again." Ther yah go... it's got to much control over your PC... "I have reg mech. 2.01 and window washer 5.0(5.1.0.2) with custom plug-ins for flash." I have RegMech and PConPoint, and CCleaner.. I dumped WW for good.. it was way too slow, and didn't take out all the crap that Uninstaller and CCleaner does... "I have S&D too, I threw my ball mouse aross the parking lot a long time ago." Are you talking "little rubber-ball mouse" or "big red marble-mouse"?.. "The facts are, nothing is going to last long these days..." When I lived in Vancouver, the Oriental neighbor had a set of hundred year old garden tools... When he was finished using them, he brought out a pail of warm light-soapy water, and cleaned each tool like it was a baby.. then buffed them dry, let them dry in the sun, then applied a light coating of wax to the wood, and oil to the metal, buffed them shiny, and stored them properly... which is why there are still thousand year old tools being used in China today... The average shovel or rake used in North America lasts about ten years before it is ready for the trash... I've seen neighbor's brand new high-end power mowers last three years before they are set out in the trash at the curb, totally wrecked... My neighbors switch gears in their vehicles from reverse to forward without giving the system a chance to stop.. and they bang on their computer keys with a vengeance... They have to replace transmissions and computers every three to five years... "I keep a copy of my drive, if things look funny I just format and copy the drive back, works everytime." I've been wanting to do that for years... What's your formula?.. "I use this Data Lifeguard Tools 11.2 for Windows I don't think it checks for a WD disk." Never tried DLT..? Please explain...

If you do a serious test to your PC's Internet security, you Will find that ZoneAlarm doesn't protect Mozilla.. you just think it does... Surf: ZoneAlarm Mozilla contradictions... There are only two firewalls that work with Mozilla stuff... BlackIce is the best one, and it doesn't overload the OS... I did some indepth scruteny into the Logitech stuff... It doesn't mess up anything... plus, it gives you that "Smartmove" option.. plus-two, there's no-more sore wrist, even after hours of photo pixel editing... This PC doesn't have "lags".. it's running faster than I've ever seen a W98 OS run... "Flat monitors vs CRT monitors"... I found when I first installed my flat new monitor, a couple months ago, that something big was missing... That blast of magnetic flux wasn't all over my face and head anymore, and it was easier to formulate new flowing thoughts, and easier to get into, and maintain a roll... I think CRT's and their necessary extremely high voltages is very unhealthy for someone to be that close to all that magnetic flux... Try a flat monitor, and if you are a deep thinker, you'll find that now it's much easier to think at the computer... It'll be like changing from a wreck VW to a Rolls... I had a little run-in with diskeeper executive software company second in command... his hit to my PC forced me to do a C-format and 15-hour reload.. so I opted for the freebie DK7.. but when I found "Power Defrag" I dumped DK, to find the PC running much faster the moment DK was cleaned out... PD didn't slow it down in the slightest... If you are running DK.. give PD a try.. you'll be glad you did... Agian, the whole point in all this is to get these W98 OS's running at tweak peak...
-
I think you're bang on right about "newer versions"... The thing is, users see that popup telling them they need to load Shockwave or Flash, and they blindly jump into it, is when all the troubles start... It's obviously the W98 system can't handle the newest versions of macromedia softwares... but what is macromedia anyway?.. Just Ads Ads and more Ads... Who needs Ads in their faces every minute?.. It seems that macrmedia is connected to a few fun video games, to try to make their maxi grand daddy trojan an item people need and want in their machines... I found after I loaded the drivers CD for my new HP 3 in 1, the first symtom was a much slower PC.. then a couple sudden lockups while the HP had just finished its install.. so I did a registry check, and there it was, with its macromedia tentacles everywhere in my machine again... HP included it in their CD... A couple days ago I wrote HP, asking for a clean bare-bones drivers CD... Haven't heard from them yet... Surf Windows98 lockups, Windows98se lockups, W98se glitches, w98se shut down problems... That's all macromedia stuff in slower older machines, causing all that grief for thousands of W98 users... I figure your PC may work fine, but if you tried an experiment, and unloaded all that Macro from your registry, you would find your machine running a lot faster... Another item that ran me through the ringer, was Defrag-2... It came with a nasty downloads manager that got its tentacles into just about everything in the OS, like nothing else does, seriously slowing down the computer's running speed.. and was a heck of a job cleaning it out... Thing is W98 machines are slow.. and we are trying squeeze every micro-second out of this system... To give you an idea the speed I've got it now.. SeaMonkey loads in 3.5 seconds... I'd like to make that 2 seconds... I don't know what else to do..?

In topic "W98 Vulnrerability"... No matter what you do to secure your PC, there are always those wizard hackers who can send nasties straight through your Router, AVS, FireWall, and various other securities, like they weren't even there, like a hot knife through warm butter, destroying your PC's OS faster than you can say "oops"... Pulling the AC-plug while the HD is going ballisatic, is like praying while your jet airliner's wing is fluttering in the winds, and its nose is pointing to the ground, and its tail pointing at the clouds... "not a prayer"... Spybot helps a little bit... A good registry backup sometimes helps... But if a super hacker bully has your number, it's most likely that you will be soon formatting-C again soon... Upset a psychotic religious group, or a government Intel division, and your PC's OS is toast within 24 hours... If you are connected to the Internet your PC is vulnerable, no matter what you've got in it... Just learn to pick your friends well...
-
In topic "tweaking W98se".. I discovered that Macromedia software seriously messes up a W98 system... If you are experiencing lockups and various shutdown irritating glitches, do a Find search for macromedia, and uninstall the whole thing... then do a regedt and destroy search for "macromedia", "shockwave", and "flash".. deleting everything associated with macromedia... careful to not delete flash items which are not macromedia... Run Registry Mechanic, and CCleaner, Fast Defrag, and Spybot... Do a Registry Mechanic Registry backup and restart... Run FastDefrag surface scan... (takes a long time) I'm bets by now all those lockup problems have simply vanished... It seems Macromedia software is too rough'n tough for little ole W98 systems... I go through the registry, deleting all the Internet links which I don't want in my machine... If you are using "Diskeeper".. it seems to seriously slow down these old "waterwheel, and steam and coal powered" W98 PC's.. Uninstal DK, and delete the whole thing from the registry.. and opt for "FastDefrag"... If you are running "Norton AVS", and/or "ZoneAlarm", and/or anything "Mozilla" (fireFox, SeaMonkey), those three softwares are super, but are not compatable with each other... They'll cause weird glitches that even the experts still don't have names for.. but I sure do... though I am not permitted to publish them in this family forum... For a super firewall for anything Mozilla you need BlackIce... ________________ To prevent softwares from contacting the Internet on the sly, install the freebee, "Tiny Personal Firewall", and set it to block everything from connecting to the Net.. even itself... TPF is the first thing I install after a fresh systems reload... I keep it on a floppy... For every software install, I ripout their links from the registry... ________________ I figure that the major cause of problems with lockups and glitches in W98, is impatient users blitzing the OS with a barrage of commands.. when the first command was too slow to complete... I've seen extremely highstrung users hammering and slamming the keyboards, and key buttons bouncing off things.. though I've never heard of a computer flying out over a highrise balchony yet... I figure the violence causes "logjams" and lockups, and most likely damages the OS... Give ole W98 a chance to complete its last commands, before angrily hammering and pounding the stuffin' out of the keyboard, and ferrociously clicking, slapping, and slamming, the mouse, till its little mousie ball is bouncing on the floor, and rolling under the desk... _______________ Make the PC a dream to use.. get yourself a Logitech Marble Mouse.. and a remote keyboard, and for sure a flat monitor... The marble mouse is super for long painfree hours of photo editing... The pen mouse gets you too close to the screen, and causes headaches... The Logitech mouse has "Smart Move" feature, which will tweak and reduce your using the mouse... _______________
