  1. I appreciate all your help with this. I'll answer the questions in the order they were posted first. Unimatrix-Zero I have to check the modem speed. It will be a few hours before I can get back on that machine. The driver is the latest and it is digitaly signed for XP. Conan I am not running Norton Internet Security 2002 on this box. It will be a few hours before I can get back on that machine. I will look at the the Task Manager first and let you know. I plan to roll back the system to a point before the the modem was installed. Then I'm going to disconnect the USB External Hub. The hub had the modem, a printer, and scanner connected to it. I will remove from Device Manager the Universal Serial Bus Controller devices and reboot the box. I am hopeing this will rebuild the USB Controller in Device Manager. Then I will connect the modem directly to a USB port on the box and install it. If Windows still runs sluggish I will look at the Task Manager and see what is keeping the CPU so busy. Let you all know in a few hours. Thanks MSN
  2. Okay. Will replace the RAM and flash the BIOS in a few hours. Will let you know what happens. Thanks
  3. It only runs sluggish when connected to the internet. It is a P3 1 GHz, 256 MB RAM.
  4. This machine has always had its problems. It presently hangs (stops dead) when the RAM is being checked by the BIOS. Tomorrow I will replace the RAM. If it still hangs I am going to flash the BIOS. I have a replacement board (same make and model) and can swap them out. Any suggestions? Thanks MSNwar - The Fat Man.
  5. We have a machine that runs sluggish when connected to the internet. Otherwise, when not connected to the internet it runs fine. After installing XP PRO we added a modem, ELSA MicroLink 56K External USB model (spelling). The modem was connected directly to a USB hub. In the Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers there are four devices of which two are duplicated. We disconnected the hub, removed the USB Controller and all devices, connected the modem to one of the USB ports, and restarted windows so that it would rebuild the configuration. I thought that this would free up resources, IRQs, which may be causing the PC to run sluggish when connected to the internet, i.e. slow mouse movement, applications opening slowly, etc. Device Manager still shows the four enties and both are duplicates. The PC still runs sluggish. Any suggestions would be kindly appreciated. MSNwar - The Fat Man Women are always running through my mind ... They dare not walk.
  6. I just noticed that some of my read and burn options in nero are also greyed out. I am also using XP Pro. The last CD I burned I selected certain options and created an ISO image. I might add that this is the first time I used nero and XP togather when creating an ISO. Anyone else noticed this with nero? More importantly, how do we fix this. My version is 5.0.3.8
  7. Curious. Does PC Anywhere have the feature that allows both users to view the screen(s)?
  8. After looking at M$ white pages it looks very complicated to use XP remote assistance and Win 2000 terminal service as an easy means to communicate. I guess Xp to XP is the best way. However, my associate uses Windows 2000 and we need another alternative. I found a program called Remote Administrator at www.radmin.com that has received excellent reviews from ZDNet and others. Supposedly, it does not require XP or Win2000 remote assistance software. We are going to try it sometime this week and we will see how it works. Let you know how it goes. MSNwar - The Fat Man
  9. I am using XP Pro and a friend is using Win2000. We want to use remote assistance. Is it possible? I read an article where the procedure is explained in detail wherein both users are using WinXP. The article also says that Win2000 has to use Terminal Services that is installed separately from the Win2000 CD. Anyone tried it? MSNwar - The Fat Man So many women...So little time.

  12. The license is the End User License Agreement, i.e. E.U.L.A. WinXp will ocassionaly check the EULA installed on the PC. Many people do not know it, but the EULA is digitaly signed as part of the setup process. When the EULA does not match the correct digital signature in the registry the user will receive the message you have seen displayed at start-up. The file itself can become corrupted and even exploited in the form of a prank. One of the two cases applies to your WinXP configuration. Have a look at www.theregister.co.uk where a article was written about the subject. I don't remember the specific article or I would give you the specific URL. Do a search on Copy Protection and you will find the article. Whats going to happen next? Don't know for sure. Let us know if you will please. This could get very interesting! MSNwar - The Fat Man
  13. This is a follow-up to my original thread. I got around to making the CD bootable according to AaronXP's excellent tutorial. I would recommend the tutorial to anyone using NERO. Needless to say the process was a success. I am extremely happy with the results. Thanks to all of you that contributed to the thread. Special thanks to Xperties for having me and not kicking me. My next project will be to create a universal edition that supports multiple languages. As in the original post I have researched the web and have found something to get me started. One of these days I hope to get back to updating my domain:D MSNwar - The Fat Man
  14. Anyone know anything about WinXP having specific problems with almost all 64MB video cards on the AGP Bus running higher than 1X? Is there a DDR Ram / Video Card problem with XP? MSNwar - The Fat Man
  15. Thanks... but that is not exactly what I am looking for. You are right about what you said. A simple freeware program to copy protect my data CDs even if it is not fullproof. Thanks MSN
  16. This post may be in the wrong section? Not sure where to post it. Is there a freeware program (easy to use) that I can use to copy lock/protect my data CDRs please? Thanks MSNwar - The Fat Man
  17. I used NERO to copy my retail xp pro. I copied the CD to the hard disk and then burned it to a CDR disc. MSN
  18. My own retail pro edition is not copy protected either. Matter of fact, I cannot remember ever have seeing a copy protected disc. Anyone? MSN - The Fat man
  19. The Home Edition EULA does not allow you to install on a laptop/mobile computer. (Correction/Edit: The home edition does not allow you to install a single license EULA on more than one PC, i.e. your desktop and laptop.) The Professional Edition EULA does! OEM Editions do not. Visit M$ and see the Piracy FAQs. http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/basics/activation/mpafaq.asp Activation Policies How many installations can be made with one product license? Has this changed with the introduction of Product Activation? The End-User License Agreement (EULA) for many Microsoft application software products contains the following sentence: "The primary user of the computer on which the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is installed may make a second copy for his or her exclusive use on a portable computer." If your EULA contains this sentence, then, subject to the conditions mentioned, you may make a second copy of the software. Note that you must be the primary user of the computer on which the software is installed. The primary user is the individual who uses the computer most of the time it is in use. Only that individual is entitled to use the second copy. Furthermore, the software must be installed on the local hard disk of your computer; you are not entitled to make and use a second copy on your portable computer if you run the primary copy of the software from a network server. Finally, only one secondary copy may be made; you may install this copy on more than one portable computer. Please note that many Microsoft products are copy protected and it will not be technically possible to make a second copy of the disk. If you are a Licensee of software that includes copy protection technology, please call the Product Support Services number provided for that specific product to learn whether or not unencrypted disks can be obtained. Does Microsoft Product Activation allow customers to install products on a laptop as well as on a PC? Consumers should refer to the terms of the product’s End User License Agreement. In some cases, the Microsoft EULA allows customers who are the primary user of Microsoft applications such as Office and Word to install one additional copy on their laptop computer for their exclusive use. This does not apply to product licenses acquired with the purchase of a PC. These OEM licenses are single-use licenses that cannot be transferred to another PC. MSNwar - The Fat Man
  20. Actually, Gateway distributes a "custom" MS OEM CD with all of its computers. Dell, Compaq, and Packard Bell also do the same. The four manufacturers create a seperate partition on your hard drive (at the outter edge of the hard drive platter) that is read during setup of a new Windows OS. A user usually cannot change/upgrade the Windows OS when a new edition is released, even a retail edition. The purpose is to keep inexperienced users from mucking up the OS. This does not apply to "all" models - just select models. You have three choices: One. Wait for the CD from Gateway, recommended. Two. Examine the CD, and look for a win98 folder. Within the folder is oemsetup.exe or setup.exe. (This is not the same as the setup.exe in the root of the CD). Run oemsetup.exe or setup.exe from the win98 folder to perform a clean install. This 'will not' remove the partition I mentioned in paragraph one. However, your system will have a clean installation of your version of Windows. Be advised that this method will not always install any hardware and software drivers and at times will not install any nice software that came with the PC. For that you have to navigate the directories of the CD and run each installation seperately. This method may (or) may not allow you to install WinXP! That depends on how clever Gateway was when they created the CD. Three. This will always work but takes a lot-of-work on your part. And you don't have to wait for a CD from Gateway. This is a two step process not for the faint of heart. Step One. If you have a CD Writer you can burn a copy of your OEM CD. The trick is to substitute the setup.exe found in the root with setup.exe from the win98 folder. There have been instances where a call to the sys.ini aborts the installation at some point. Again, depends on how Gateway created the file structure of the original. In this case a 0 Fill of the hard drive must be accomplished to remove the partition I discussed earlier. Thats step Two. Step Two. Obtain a 0 Fill utility from the hard drive manufacturer and select 0 Fill, delete all partitions, recreate new partitions and new master boot records. Now you have a clean hard drive. Important that you follow 0 Fill instructins to the letter or you will end up with a very unuseable hard drive!!! Then use the OEM Copy and install your OS. Then install XP. Method three is tricky and can again leave your hard drive unuseable. I have a moto. If you want to run with the the big dogs you have to get off the porch. MSNwar - The Fat Man
  21. AaronXP Thanks for the link, the hard work, and the help. That really is a lot of work you did. I saved it and edited it for tomorrow sometime. Mind if I post it on my site in the near future? Thanks again. MSNwar - The Fat Man msnwar@msnwar.com www.msnwar.com

  24. Be sure to switch off Universal Plug'n'Play as well. The patch don't really cover it all. Other words...it don't fully work! Check it out at http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=2111&category=main. Your best defense is to encrypt folders that contain confidential information like credit card numbers, passwords, etc. The best method is to keep confidential data on external media like zip disks, CD-R, etc. Ah, I'm tired of writing.
