Let me add a bit of positive impressions back in. Something REALLY cool I found out by accident. I have a Windows 8 PC here, that when I plugged it into the corporate network, it automatically found and installed the network printer. It was totally transparent. The only reason I knew it was added was because I found it in Device Manager. As a test, I sent along a Test Page and it printed just fine. That really takes the pain out of installing printers!

The wireless devices are something else, something to do with a firewall inside the router that isolates the physical from wireless connections. Actually.... doing DNS would be a pain.... I just had an idea... Why not add an entry for the name and IP into your HOSTS file? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_%28file%29 Maybe that will be enough to work.

In a network without a local DNS server in place, typically you should be able to resolve local hostnames as long as NetBIOS over TCP/IP and/or Network Discovery (Windows Vista+) is enabled. BUT, the hardware you want to connect to needs to support this type of identification. Looking at NAS FAQ, it seems they want you to use some "File Browser" to connect to the device. http://www.synology.com/support/tutorials_show.php?lang=enu&q_id=486 Or Synology Assistant... In fact, all of their tutorials show using the IP address rather than the device name. So I'm not sure how you can get it to broadcast its device name, I mean other than using a DNS server... which would be silly for just 1 device.

I presume you mean canNOT see it or ping it by name. We probably need more information about your setup. This is a home or business network? Do you have your own DNS server or are you using your ISP? What is the make and model of your router and NAS?

If you do this, you'll have to do it when the OS is offline (aka boot to some other media). These files can't be moved while in use. BUT note that if this is done incorrectly, you could end up blowing up your Windows install... so maybe make a backup before continuing on with this. My question is WHY would you want to do this at all?

Which version of Windows? Try putting your folder someplace other than Program Files, since on more recent OSes, that is a protected location.

There is some arm length of requirements for Windows 8 to be on a touch screen PC. So I'd imagine that this review may not be 100% accurate of an actual final product that a company may end up selling. I say this because: I can't find the touch screen specs, so I can't compare with the requirements of the OS for touch. While the "un-named" Windows 8 (non-Pro) edition has... um... no name... It seems to be also known as Windows 8 Core. I do prefer that suffix rather than not having one! Anyways, I'm not familiar with these OSSKUs you found. Where can they be found? OH... notice you read posted this: Those apps run on web-technologies, rather than being limited to the architecture support of the OS. The IE and Office parts don't count since those are custom builds for ARM CPU code.

Well so far, the only board I've seen this on has UEFI 2.3.1 firmware. I still can find no "general use" BIOS modification tool that lets me put a picture in there. And by "general use" I mean either some generic tool, or even a BIOS specific (AMI, Award, Phoenix, Insyde, etc) manipulation tool. Also I forgot to mention that the Intel ITK5 used to modify the DH77EB BIOS is unable to open BIOS files without the extra ACPI tables. I tested this by attempting to open an Intel BIOS from May of this year. For this Intel one, I am thinking that either the BIOS splash screen is now kept in the BGRT, or it puts it in the old and the new place. I didn't get a chance to compare it with a previous version yet to see if that is true. BUT I will say that old BIOS types that do not have the BGRT and do have the ability to add a custom splash screen will NOT be picked up by Windows 8. Otherwise, no one would have seen the blue Window or the Beta fish when booting Windows 8. And this BIO file for this Intel board can be updated using either the built-in F7 method, or by using their DOS (or Windows) tool. There was a new version of IFLASH/2 that came out with the 77 board series. If you try to use the older DOS IFLASH/2 it gives you some error about it not being an Intel board.

I think the general idea can be made simpler. Can it only break/malfunction on Windows 8? If yes it's a Windows 8 Store App. Can it break/malfunction on all versions of Windows? If yes, it's a Windows 8 Modern App.

I use a third party app. Here is 64bit app to change resolution (does not work in WinPE 4) And for 32bit, look for a program called Setres.exe.
