that's the first thing I do on my fresh Windows install.
it's not just the shutdown its also the start up. Its sitting there for almost 10sec doing absolutely nothing during boot. Not to much it takes about 3min to get into safe mode

thx for clarification. never thought about it that way.

will this application tell me also about driver and application delays?

disabled the task manager and still only 50% CPU is used when searching thru the registry. Could it be that the regedit application is not smp ready?

I know bootvis is no longer public but I don't want to use it for the
optimization system, I want the boot time details. Because my shutdown now takes more than half a minute and bootup around 1 min. So I wanna see which app/driver is the problem. Does anyone know where I
can find a piece of software, if there is no bootvis for x64?

just did some searches in regedit and I found out that Win XP 64 isn't even multithreaded since it only used 50% of the CPU.
Why is this so?

Today I was playing with some settings for the visually impaired and after I set everything back the way it was (normal fonts, blue windows theme, normal icons). But Office 2003 programs (Outlook, Word, Excel) are still all grey and not blue as they were.
How do I fix this so that Office 2003 programs don't use the clasic theme?
ps. on this machine there is no uxtheme patches or any other non microsoft stuff. the themes installed are the default ones which came with windows (silver, olive green, blue).
solved:
had to disable high contrast in accesibility option.

hey no problem. haven't tried this yet because I am afraid of lossing stuff

but won't that only save the original scheme? and not the modified one?

In Windows XP SP2 I am using the classic Windows 2000 theme. And I have colored it under DISPLAY PROPERTIES -> APPERANCE -> ADVANCED section.
Now I am interested how could I save these color profile?

I got a Win2k3 enterprise server at my home. And since I do alot of OS installation to various computers I was thinking if it was possible to set up a network install. So that I would mount an OS image in Win2k3 and a client machine supporting PXE boot would just boot of that image containing an OS and install from network.
Keep in mind that I would be installing LINUX aswell as Windows OSs.

Hello!
Thus far I have been using a pirated version of Win2003 SP2 enterprise edition. So now finally our school admin has set up MSDNAA so I am now able to receive a student free of charge license for almost all of Microsofts products.
But when I tried to change the serial number in Win2k3 with the one I got through MSDN Academic Alliance, Windows 2003 said the serial is invalid. This is the guide I used for changing serials:
http://www.petri.co.il/change_the_serial_in_windows_xp.htm
I also called at MS support center and they said that this is impossible. But an in-place upgrade would change the serial. Unfortunately she couldn't be more specific about it because that would require a paid support and then she would redirect my phone call to england where they are experts. But she did say that I should check on web for this.
Is the in-place upgrade the same thing as a repair install and would thus erase all my drivers and such?

There a certain programs that I would prefer them to be in system tray instead of taking up valuable space in my taskbar.
So I've searched around for such tools and there's so many of them.
Which one do you suggest that is lightweight and does a good job?
Heard 4tray is good:

I'm not too sure, but can't you just make a static ip address for your xp machine, giving the dns address of your server running dns, then add host records in dns for all the machines on your network.
Sorry my answer is so brief, I'm in a hurry.
I could try. But how do I do that?

I added a laptop, JONSON, to my LAN and pinged it from WinXP machine and also accessed its shared drives. And then launched
'ipconfig displaydns'
and there was no mention of such computer.
But when I pinged and accessed the same computer on W2k3 server 'ipconfig displaydns' just said:
jonson----------------------------------------
Name does not exist.
what else can I do?
0 -
so if you resolve a name on your win2k3 server and type ipconfig /displaydns you see the pcs listed that you have resolved?
no I do not.
this is what I did on the W2k3 box:
ipconfig /flushdns
then I accessed '\\acer-travelmate' and click on some of his folders and also pinged it by its dns name which gave me the IP '88.200.110.xxx'
then I did
ipconfig /displaydns
and this is the output:

it does not work. Could my DNS server be setup wrong?
I have entries under the CACHE in the DNS Configuration screen. But those entries are for web pages only.

hmm, if you can connect to them by IP not name then that would suggest that the 2 routes we put in are working.
this has been working prior to adding those routes. I jmentioned this in my original post. That is way I put the name of the thread 'Can't resolve DNS'.
Can your w2k3 box resolve the other pc's hostnames?yes
if so then i think that the DNS server that it has should also be the DNS server that the xp box has.I am using DNS server service on W2k3 box. So my DNS for client machine is 192.168.0.1 (servers IP).
I did try manually adding DNS servers to XP box but it doesn't help.

I don't know what 88.200.110.128 is. And if I ping it it says the destination is invalid.
And also when I deleted it from the ROUTE table there was no ill efects.
Restarted the server and this is the basic ROUTE TABLE

sorry for not replying sooner had midterms.
Any way your route add table worked somewhat.
On the client machine I can now see some of the computers but I can't connect to them nor can I ping them because it says the host is unavailable. But I can ping them or connect to them on the server itself.
So we are on a good road just something is still missing.
My W2k3 server is connected to the RJ45 socket located in my room.
here's the new 'route print'

bootVis for x64
in Windows XP 64 Bit Edition
Posted
Trance
that is exactly why I would need a bootvis because there can be a milion reasons. I also went into MSCONFIG in disabled all non microsoft services and startup items and nothing helped. In device manager all is ok.
pa. about the bootvis. It works on X32 just not on X64
