  1. Starting with a fresk W2K Pro CD, I copied it to my HD, downloaded SP4, nLite 1.2.1, and the alternate .NET Framework Lite. I installed nLite and the .NET Framework Lite, started nLite, and pointed it to the folder that I had copied the W2K to. I elected to slipstream SP4, integrate drivers, remove components, and select patches and tweaks. Since this installation was destined for a machine with no CD, DVD, or floppy drive, I skipped the ISO creation step. When nLite finished, I copied the newly slimmed install over to a USB memory key, and then over to the Tablet PC, which is running Win98SE on a FAT32 drive. I booted the Tablet, brought up the Win98 pre-boot menu, picked "Command prompt only", and loaded Smartdrv. I then changed over to the W2K\I386 directory and started the setup with the WINNT command. While still in the text mode portion of setup, the following error screen appeared: Setup was unable to create the following directory on the target drive: C:\$WIN_NT$.~LS\I386\i386\NLDRV\001 Check the target drive and make sure no files exist with names that coincide with the target directory. Also check cabling to the drive. Setup cannot continue. Press ENTER to exit. No files or folders anywhere near that name existed on the drive prior to initiating setup. It has run fine with Win98SE, so I doubt that cabling is an issue. I am forced to consider that nLite is causing a problem. Perhaps I removed or added something that I should not have? To assist, I have attached my LAST SESSION.INI file. Any help would be appreciated! LAST_SESSION.INI
  2. I have a W2K CD with SP4 slipstreamed. While still running Win98, I imaged the CD to an ISO file, then used UltraISO to add a couple new folders containing drivers and base software. After I confirmed that the image was still bootable and that it didn't contain any obvious errors, I burned it to a CD and attempted to do a clean install. While still in the first part of text mode setup, I get a message that says: Please insert the disk labeled Service Pack 4 CD into Drive A: Press ENTER when ready I've never seen a clean install give this error, and I also have no A: drive in this laptop. Help!
  3. I got a copy of 98lite, and will be using it to set up a 98micro install on my main system and an ancient laptop (AMD 366Mhz, 192 Megs RAM, ~4GB HD, dialup modem). The older laptop is going to a friend who is not very technically inclined. 1) What are my options for a free, easy to use, lightweight firewall? 2) How about handling POP3 email and a dayplanner? Same criteria. I'm experimenting with a 98lited install with VirtualPC before I put it on either machine. Virtual PC is good, but is limited by what hardware it does and does not emulate, so it's hard to verify dialup connectivity. 3) Under the 98micro configuration, what must I keep to keep dialup functionality intact? Broadband? 4) For speed, reduced HD clutter, etc, how can I set up a RAM disk for temp files, browser cache, history, etc? Obviously any favorites would need to be saved to the HD as normal. 5) Once I get the systems configured perfectly, exactly how can I image the systems to a bootable "Restore CD"? Older laptop has no CD writer - Image must be transferred to my main system to be burned. Assuming that I load the USB drive drivers, can I transfer the image to my main system with a 2GB USB drive? Thanks!
  4. I realize that Win98 modifications aren't this boards forte', but I need some advice. I currently have a system running nothing but XP, which I'm getting ready to blow away in favor of a dual-boot between Win98 and Ubuntu Linux. I plan to use 98 to play all my games that won't run under Linux, mainly older Windows games. I also want to have the ability to open up FireFox and surf forums in case my Linux install should barf all over itself due to my tinkering. I'd also like the 98 install to have the ability to read/write Linux partitions, if possible. That could come in handy for troubleshooting. Now we all know how unstable 98 is on its own, but Id like to mitigate that - I'm currently searching for a secondhand copy of 98lite Professional, to gut 98 of all its bloat and feature creep. After that, I'll need to secure 98 so that it doesn't get taken down by viruses, worms, or ad/malware. Since MS just EOL'ed 98 today, in theory I should be able to download all of the patches for it, but since I'll be stripping it down, either by hand (advice welcome on that) or with 98lite, I'll want to be selective in what patches I do and do not install. For example, since 98 will not have IE loaded, I'll want to skip those patches. Or am I wrong about that? I already plan to load AVG Anti-Virus, ZoneAlarm (both Free Editions), Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, and a shareware app that kills 99% of ads. (I beta'ed the app, so the regged version os free to me, and a lost of nasty stuff gets brought in via ads - Long Live Ad Muncher!) Also, FireFox will be replacing IE. I'll also be loading the latest 98 drivers for my hardware along with DirectX to keep the games happy. Lastly, I have a copy of PartitionMagic that can handle most Linux partitions, so that I can adjust space between OS'es as I need to, which I can install. Should I use that, or is there a better Linux alternative? Thanks!
