Related, there is a free trial of Windows XP Embedded which is also small (designed to be booted from a flash card). It can be downloaded from Micro$oft site.

No other processes should be running when doing a rootkit scan. The only things that seem suspicious are the multiple .tmp files in the temp directory. Boot to a command prompt and delete those, if they still exist. Otherwise everything is fine.

This will definitely work, many schools and other public computers use this system.

Give it a different OS version from API? Redirect domain to 0.0.0.0 via HOSTS?

Use the BIOS int 13 disk services. There are several that can be used, but this one comes to mind: Loop through from drive 80 onwards, this essentially scans for valid drives. Once a drive is found, it can be determined to be removable or fixed with another function. The byte at 0040:0075 is also "number of fixed disk drives", according to the IBM PC AT Technical Reference Manual. Another alternative is to check for drives via hardware I/O through the ports starting at 1F0 (primary IDE controller) and 170 (secondary IDE controller)

I don't think that can be done. You need an account with their company to use their services.

You should also chkdsk it once in a while, lost clusters can take up quite a bit of free space. I just clear out the dllcache and prefetch once in a while.

Just ignore... your IP address is logged on every website you visit anyway. If you're really that scared, use a proxy or a chain of proxies. Torrents and eMule are still considered "safe"... although it does depend on where you live.

It certainly would be.

Expect this to also be detected as a virus soon...

Something that big deserves to be torrented instead of put on a server, unless your connection is decently fast uploading and you can serve it from your own machine. -

Beware of startups originating in win.ini and system.ini I have seen this before, a trojan is loaded from a line in system.ini or win.ini and is called rundII (notice the I instead of L) which then proceeds to load explorer, "wrapping" around it.

I see... I didn't know this since I don't use directly connected dial-up modem.

differences between Windows XP OEM and Retail version
LLXX replied to ladude626's topic in Windows XP
There is only one line in setupp.ini that controls what product key it accepts.Of course, you will need the correct product key. -
Any "Emulate SATA as ATA" option?

Search by filesize... files that big aren't easy to hide...
