  1. thanks guys! yea, id set the torrent directories. i think the application data may be what im looking for. im busy reformatting, right now. actually, off topic, but i used a usb stick to restore my drivers upon fresh install of windows, and i got a warning bubble saying that the usb slot i was using was using too much power. i pulled it out, and when i reinsterted the stick........nothing happened. the stick didnt work. nothing is recognized. did the usb slot i was using burn out> or did windows shut it down? whats up?
  2. Some months ago, i posted here about a small issue i was having with Utorrent. On my Windows XP Pro. PC, i have two partitions. The C: drive is about 10gb, and the remaining 200 and something GB makes up the D: drive. basically, i bought Deep Freeze, and i keep my C: partition, where windows is installed, completely frozen, while leaving the D: drive thawed. while its not for everybody, it works great for me. the best protection ever, as far as im concerned. the only catch is that some programs, like utorrent, dont work well with this. you have to make sure that there are no files in relationsion to any program you need to make changes to ont eh frozen drive. a long time ago i posted about this and i received excellent replies directing me to move the files from the "Common Files" folder on my C: drive to my thawed D: drive. which worked great! however, this was with uTorrent v1.4. I recently upgraded my uTorrent to v1.6. and suddenly, it doesnt work anymore. i went to the common files folder, and nothing wabout uTorrent was there. i did searches on my C: drive for "uTorrent", and still nothing. anybody have any ideas? everytime i add a torrent to uTorrent, it disappears by the time i reboot my pc.
  3. i keeping hearing about two things: VMWare and nLite. im still working on figuring out what the heck nLite is, but VMWare i havent been able to find much. i mean, ive found that its a virtual machine. like running a virtual windows on your PC. but do you have to actually install windows on it? can you install other OS's? is this so you can test out software? why not jsut use DeepFreeze? i realize that this is about as n00b as it gets, but i cant help it. if this stuff makes my life easier, especially since i do a lot of reformatting (autopatcher is my RELIGION), then i dont want to miss out.
  4. yea, thatd be nice eh? i love WDS as well, but that icon is a bummer. do you know of any software that can manage those tray icons? theres some icons that you cant even make auto-hide, and id liek them to do at leats that, if not completely disappear.
  5. i see! well then...i think i might switch to DK.
  6. I fully understand what Zxian is saying, but im not sure hes right. sort of. ha! "Zxian says: i.e. it realizes that you're probably going to be accessing shell32.dll and explorer.exe in a relatively short time period (i.e. one file, then the other) so it'll put those two together. PerfectDisk only arranges files based on last access (except for those listed in the layout.ini file), it wouldn't necessarily lead to those two files being placed "close" to each other" theoretically it may be true that shell32.dll and explorer.exe may not be placed close together, because association isnt how PD directly works, but the reality is that those two files will be placed close together. Smartplacement may sort files in the order of most recently accessed, but if two files are accessed virtually at the same time, wouldnt they be placed together? leaving gaps like you do on a bookshelf so you can add new books without moving them all over sounds good, but i think its faster to go with PD, because associated files would still be placed together. if im to understand this properly, anyway. i mean....yea, PD basically lumps all the files accessed, say....within the last week, and puts them altogether, but its doesnt just put them together randomly. It would only make sense that shell32.dll and explorer.exe would be close together. am i completely wrong? most of this im jsut getting from what ive been reading here, about how each functions. and it seems like perfectdisk is more efficient.
  7. I have to say that this is one of the best threads ive ever read here at MSFN. HDD's are close to my heart, and i greatly fear their loss. which is why i want to go with whichever will reduce the workload on my HDD. Im not worried about speed. is there a significance between the health of a HDD that is defragged by either PD or DK? one more quick question, is PD8 significanctly better in performance than PD7? if a thread over this topic exists, feel free to direct me to it.
  8. see the thing is, its not just my usb stick. its everything! any part of my pc that requires USB. it all functions great. my APC battery backup. my ATI RemoteWonder for my all-in-wonder video card. just..windows explorer cant find it? its the damndest thing. and until now i enevr realized how badly i needed USB.
  9. just google the "shared computer toolkit" to find it? its on the microsoft website. i use the toolkit at home, and its great, but its definately not what you need. the toolkit only puts ristrictions on the user, it does not protect the computer. you can control every aspect of the user experience, but spyware will still stick, and viruses will still happen. Deep Freeze is the way to go. ive never been on a classroom computer wityhout it having been installed on it. Im on campus right now, and this computer has deep freeze. deep freeze literally freezes the state of the computer, so you can make the computer EXACTLY the way you'd like it, and then you simply freeze it. when users log on, they can do pretty much everything they want, unless you restrict it using the toolkit. but that parts up to you. once the computer restarts, its exactly the way it was, and thats how it will remain except for the people who know the administrative password (you). its not free, but its not too bad. for educational purposes, its probably around 10 - 15 bucks (american) per PC. personally, id apply the toolkit first, without being too restrictive, since anything they do will go away with reboot, and then freeze it. for Faronic's Deep Freeze, click here: http://www.faronics.com/index.asp for Microsofts Shared Computer Toolkit, click here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sharedaccess/default.mspx hope this helps!
  10. you know, this is interesting, because i can say with absolute certainty that everytime this has happened i had either Alcohol or Daemon installed. i dont know, maybe thats whats messing up my letters. anyway, this logical disk manager. how do i access it? in the meantime ill try this device manager suggestion.
  11. I use USB a lot. a LOT. i have usb jumpdrives for school. my cell phone connects to my pc via usb. my internal memory card reader is usb. and yet...i cant use any of them. they just...dont show up in My Computer. the really weird thing is that if i plug in my jumpdrive, or my phone, i get all those bubbles popping up about "safely remove hardware" and "installing new hardware" or whatever. everything does what its suppose dto. it jsut...doesnt show up. and its not detected by any software. the software that came with my phone, or memory card reader sya its not there. this has happenbed many times. every time i reformat my PC, its there. theyre all there. then one day i notice theyre not! sometimes it takes months, sometimes weeks. i dont understand! ive tried googling around, since reformatting everytime i want to read my memory stick is getting old, and ive seen people with similar problems. but there are no answers anywhere. oh! im running XP Pro on an intel pc, btw. anyone have any suggestions?
  12. Alright, so im setting up a nice defense systerm for my computer. but i cant finish the last step! i want a good process guard. Some of you may be familiar with those such as Winpatrol, Prevx(a much better one than winpatrol, just for the record). Ghost Security has Appdefend and Regdefend. I Know Kaspersky has some sort of process guard built into the Internet Secuirty Suite. So? Do you have a favourite? Im really hoping for some good feedback here, so anything at all would be great!
  13. I was reading PCWorld magazine a few months ago and I came across a short blip about this wonderful, magical, beautiful site that lets users post errors codes from the BOS's they get, and such not, asking for help. People reply with their own experiences and solutions. Its sort of like a databse forum type thing. does anyone know about this?! i cant find it anywhere! any helkp would be greatly appreciated.
  14. hahahaha i KNEW someone would bring up the clapper. sorry folks, thats just not cool enough. and wqhile i was suere this existed.....since the 70'S!!!!? no way man. youve got to be kidding me. im excited about this. thanks for your help!
  15. I got home from work today to find my room dark and messy, and without an overhead light, and tired from work, having a hard time reaching the lamp switch. At which point I thought of something BRILLIANT. And something I desperately hope exists. What if you could buy a sort of….well, I call them “power bars”. You know those things that plug into a wall power socket, and has several sockets? You have a computer. Of course you do. Well, anyway, picture for a moment, a power bar with three outlets. Labelled ‘a’’b’ and ‘c’. now imagine this power bar also has a USB or firewire type thing, that connects to your computer. NOW imagine it comes with software, which, when installed, gives you an interface to control to outlets on the power bar, with a click of the button from the interface, you can turn outlet ‘a’ on. So, if you plug a lamp in to it, you can turn the lamp on and off form your pc. NOW imagine you have voice recognition software. I don’t know if you can download it, or from torrents, or buy a really good one. But lets say the voice recognition software could work with the powerbar software. So you could walk into the room and say “Computer, lights on”, a phrase you will have programmed into the voice recognition software to turn on outlet “a”. And the lamp goes on! Now use your imagination! With a simple motor mechanism found in virtually…everything! You could hook it up to your door. “computer, close door” Or even more imaginative…”computer, OPEN door.” Well!? What do you think? Does it exist? If it doesn’t im going to do everything in my power to make it happen. I WANT this. Please reply if you know of something like this. Ill pay anything!
  16. I did know that poor DVDs influence burning, but Maxell is a good brand. very reasonable. surely iot can handle 16X? if it says it? i often burn at slower speeds than the maximum, but there are times when i need those minutes. theres no way to get them? you talked about letting Nero or your dvd burner scan for the best speed?
  17. I have an internal Benq dual layer, lightscribe supporting 16X DVD burner, as well as Windows XP Pro. i recently used up my 8X spindle, and figured for the same price, why not go with 16X instead? but Nero wont let me burn ny faster han 8X! 16X simply doesnt show up in the small drop down menu when you choose the burning speed. what do i do! id love to burn twice as fast! i went to the BenQ website and they dont mention anything about updates. what do i do!
  18. alright, i really want a sidebar to be available to me all the time in Windows. i run windows xp Pro. i dont know about vistas, but what i want is Opera style, in that its sort of..minimized, just a bar with an arrow, and when you click it a bar pops out. can i get anything like that for windows?
  19. oh! well, just go to nero.com, search "lightscribe", and click the first result.
  20. i recently came across an old laptop. a Toshiba Satellite Pro 430. it has no HDD or battery. and no network jack! ill just ASSUME it has no wireless network built in, since i doubt it was even invented at the time. so! it has some weird slot things, and jacks ive never seen before. i was hoping to make it useable again. what i want to know is: 1) what kind of hard drive do i need to put into it? 2) how do i put a network jack into it? i dont have a wireless router, only a normal router that uses netowkr cables. i was also wondering about the possibility of a memory extension? is that possible?
  21. man, as soon as i saw the title to this post, i KNEw you were going to ask this. i had the exact same problem! its easy to fix. just click the link below! on the page there is a list titled "LightScribe technology requires three elements:". just click the link to the "host software" in the fourth point, download, and install! im pretty sure it works for Nero 6 and 7. anyway, to USE lightscribe, once you have that installed, simply go to Nero's "Cover Designer". you can design a Disc Label there, and somewhere along the way youll be able to choose Lightscribe. i cant really recall off the top of my head, but post here agin if you need any further help.
  22. hmm... so, i have two user accounts on my PC (windows xp pro.) now since im a windows media player user, i keep my media library within the program. PROBLEM is that other users can see my media library when they open Windows Media Player from THEIR account. when they try to play the songs it doesnt work though. it just goes red with the exlaimation mark and wont play. but it does show up. so when they use the media librayr to hold their songs, it can get confusing to know which songs are whose. so how do i fix this? the thing is, i mean, this may affect other applications as well. i havent tested it yet, but i was thinking that my settings, or favourite articles saved in Encarta, or even my saved sites in FlashFXP with saved passwords will all be seen from the other account. is there a simple way to solve this problem? particularly the windows media player problem.
  23. reinstalling drivers? no way. i mean, i tried it. using windows to automatically install the drivers. my memory card reader came with a CD, but when i try t use it it smply says "usb device not found" or something like that. besides, what would drivers have to do with the fact that NONE of my devices show up in My Computer? i guess it just seems like a weird coincidence. i also tried using the Add Hardware wizard. i hate this thing. it ALWAYS says "device is working properly" even if it isnt. or the device jsut wont show up n the wizard. **** useless. anyway...the wizard said it was working fine. i dont know man! my mouse is a USB mouse. i know the devices are woring. theyre just..not showing up. oh! and i tried putting my data stick in a back USB slot, one of the ones integrate dinto the motherboard. nothing happened. i had thought this would be a simple solvable problem. i mean...it seems like something that would have happened before. but now im getting somewhat scared.... does anyone have any suggestions?
