Faulty Hard Drive
breadandbubbles replied to breadandbubbles's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
ive HEARD that he was crap. i read a whole thing about it. actually, while i was using the software, it seemed crappy. hard to explain. just....felt like garbage. just had that feeling, ya know? thats why i started looking into it in the first place. jsut had a bad feeling. but so many people swore by it...ah well. anyways, its definately Maxtor. i'll use those tools though, to get more info. -
alright so i had some stuff coming in from utorrent and i got this cyclic redundancy check error thing with a file.... turns out its really likely that my hard drives not doing so good. SMART says ive got 87% health, but windows chkdsk got stuck at 3%, and SO did Spinrite V6, at the same spot. ive gotten everything i needed off the hard drive (except the faulty file). now i dont know what to do. i mean...is the hard drive garbage? spinrite cant fix anything. i was wondering if there was a way to get my hard drive to work around the bad sectors. but then im wondering if the bad sectors could spread? ive looked everywhere for answers, but i think im missing a key word here. sometimes all your searching goes out the window without that one key word. if i could get some fll help here, that would be GREATLY appreciated, but i understand that this topic is ALL OVER the internet. if i could get some help, advice, maybe a little past experiences from you folks, or just a good start, well...thank you in advance.

a third party shell? is that the easiest way? are there no ways to simply remove those functions from the context menu? its been some time but im almost CERTAIN microsoft's shared computer toolkit had something like that.

Looking For A Freeware Firewall
breadandbubbles replied to 3aces's topic in Networks and the Internet
agreed, zonealarm is AWFUL. ive been recently looking into a good firewall myself, and one that keeps popping up is "Jetico". firewallleaktester.com actually gave it an award for best firewall, as have numerous others. i highly recommend looking jetico up, but to be fair, while ive heard EXCELLENT reviews of commodo, i have yet to use it myself. good luck to you! -
im TRULY ashamed of myself. i remember reading about how much nero 7 sucks and isnt worth the upgrade. yet i didnt even THINK of going back. such a simple solution. i love it. hmmmm....but are those the only differences though? i mean....besides aesthetically, of course. i dont care about aesthetics. but practically, are there any major differences in performance? recoding capablities? dvd authoring? that kind of thing?
-
to be honest, i lvoe nero. it does what i need. what i DONT love is that #%@# INDEXING. sorry. caps. i didnt mean to shout. but seriosuly. what were they THINKING. indexing that cant be disabled? the ultimate bloat. does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative media suite that doesnt involve the phrase "roxio"??? please? please? .... please?

FAT formatting in XP
breadandbubbles replied to breadandbubbles's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
so youd suggest using clusters of 32? it asked me if i wnated to use 64 "(y/n)". i chose yes, but if i said no, would it have gone with 32 instead? i guess it would be better to go that way? -
FAT formatting in XP

alright, i chose clusters of 64. it mentions compatibility issues, but thats all. if it works with my device, i have nothing to worry about? -
FAT formatting in XP

wow. both those replies were really helpful. i REALLY appreciate it. Crahak, that was AWESOME, and i understand so much more, but theres still some things im missing here. i feel stupid not understanding, but are you saying putting 4GB to use with the FAT system is risky? i thought it was just loss of performance? like speed or maximum capacity or something like that? -
I have a 4GB MiniSD card. when i insert it into ym PC, it tells me its formatted to FAT32. by right clicking and choosing "Format", i hoped to be able to format it differentally, but FAT32 is the only opton. I need to format it to FAT. the card came formatted that way, but i had to format it differentally for a little while. no w i cant get it back. im a little upset. the card was pretty expensive. someone told me that windows doesnt like formatting things to FAT after 2gb? they suggested i run teh command "l: /fs:fat" (I: being my card reader) that didnt work at all. "not recognized as an internal or external command" etc. so, anyone have any suggestions?

im willing to try it. i ahve deep freeze, as i said, so if i could try ti with my PC frozen that would be great. im assuming id have to reboot though? how would i go about doing this? where do i put this command? you dont have to tell me step by step, but im kind of a noob and a point in any direction (opefully the right direction) would be great. well, i guess a FURTHER point, since you already did sort of point. i dont even know what im syaing anymore..

i KNEW that would happen. i guess what im asking is: is Nero Lite the only solution to the nero indexing service?
-
i dont want to use Nero lite. its a great idea, but i would just rather stick with my bloated nero. at least, i WOULD like to, but this indexing! i disabled nero scout, but proccesses like "monitor" and "index" under nero are still running! i posted this in the windows xp section, because i figured the answer did not lie in the software itself, but in Windows. are there some registry entries i can delete to get rid of these processes? **** NMGbmonitor.....

yea, i currently keep all my programs installed on the unfrozen drive, but the application data still stays in the frozen C: drive. i dont wnat to give up this whole project jsut for that reason. i think it can be done. but as it is now i cant change any of my settings in Microsoft Office, or in Opera, etc. its very upsetting. no ideas?

Hi all. im ahving a very strange problem. i want to enable hibernation support in Windows, so that my PC's battery backup can hibernate my pc in the event of a power outage. unfortunately, when i follow control panel -> power options -> hibernate tab, and then check the "enable hibernation" checkbox, and then try to apply it, i get a message titled "power policy manage unable to reserve hibernate file", telling me that "a device attached to the system is not functioning." i am forced to click "OK", and the box unchecks itself. i tried searching the forums, but the only thing i found regarded nLite. somoone posted a similar situation. well. they pretty much sjut said that it didnt work. and another user posted a solution. i was wondering what they meant, or if it was even relevant for me, as i dont use nLite. does anyone know what i can do? thanks in advance for any help.

I keep my C: drive frozen, so for the sake of making my life a little easier, i was wondering if there was a way to simply move the Applications Data folder to another partition.

New menu program for application installs on xp cds
breadandbubbles replied to #rootworm's topic in Software Hangout
i dot gte how to run it. though, thats probably just because im a basic user, and know nothing of programming. -
I have my PC partitioned. a small C: drive, and a very large D: drive. the only thing on the C: drive is Windows Pro. sp2. I keep the C: drive frozen, so spyware or viruses or any changes at all wont take effect. I make changes to the D: drive only. I want to use Windows Desktop Search, but it wont let me choose where to install it. So i have to install it to the C: drive. which would be alright... except the indexing doesnt work. itll index all day, but if i restart the computer, it starts all over. Is there any way to fix this? does anyone know of a good desktop search that will let me choose where to install? i want to use WDS, but if i ahve to use another, i will.

Static IP's cost money?
breadandbubbles replied to breadandbubbles's topic in Networks and the Internet
thnx guys! -
Alright. id first like to thank you for your time in reading this. i need help so bad, and i cant tell you how much i appreciate this. I want to port forward, and i think theres a big step im missing, which im surprised isnt covered by port-forward.com. forwarding specific ports is easy enough, but it says yuou need a static ip address. this is where my confusion kicks in. i realize that your ISP provides you with an ip, and your router provides you with anbother ip. i also realize that the one from the router needs to eb static in order to port forward to it. but what about DNS servers? i followed the instructions, and everything was fine, but when i used ipconfig in the command box, my dns server things were th same as my ip? this didnt work when i inputted the information into the internet protocol properties box. my internet didnt work anymore portforward.com said i could call my ISP about getting a DNS server, because they "answer these questions all the time". then i fidn out getting my DNS number would require a static ip. which requires BIG MONEY so....does everyone who has.........basically, jsut...properly configured internet, and a portforwarded router pay big money every month? or can i do this with a dynamic IP that doesnt cost as much? is there something i dont understand?
