well, im not sure if i completely understand. i want to set up a nettop with XBMC. only i want to use it to access a server over the internet. how can i do this?
-
i just wanted your collective advice. what would YOU do? so, my home pc has about 4 TB's of media. im a big video editor and what have you, and i have LOTS of media, and music. no, my girlfriend lives across the city. I just moved back home with my parents. im trying to find a way for both me, my parents, and my girlfriend to access this data, and stream it. right now i have XBMC on an original xbox, and my parents have a Playstation3. both access my Windows7 Home Premium running pc via Windows SMB. very simple sharing. nothing fancy. i use Orb to access this stuff from abroad. NOW. i need my girlfriend to be able to stream all my video and music on her TV. id love to set her up with something like XBMC, but how can she access my server? i was told that this would be extremely difficult without a static IP, but i dont see why something like ORB or DynDNS couldnt help me. also, i was thinking of having this all done from a separate box. i could build a home server of sorts. id like to be able to control who can see what from a panel on my Windows 7 PC. would i need full fledged server software for that? server2008? i can figure that part out though. i just dont know how to get it to her. EDIT: Hamachi? EDIT AGAIN: alright, ive found this: http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2009/10/build...e-on-the-cheap/ he just takes a small nettop and installs XBMC on it. sound sgreat. but what i want is to run hamachi on it, so i can stream. unfortunately it looks like his installation replaces Windows. so..i couldnt run hamachi without windows...right? im in over my ehad here.

well! thanks for the response. the one part i didnt completely follow was your point that katamri might not work well on the Wii platform. i mean...are you KIDDING ME? katamari is like, MADE for the wii! i dont know, thats my opinion. the fact that it isnt out means i may be wrong here. you do have a point about playability though. i'll be honest, a lot fo the games ive always wnated to try are for other systems, like final fantasy, starocean, etc. but i jsut dont have the time to take my gaming that seriously anymore. im way more likely to play team fortress 2 ove rfallout 3, and katamari or wii sports over final fantasy. we'll just have to see then eh?
-
i have no newer game systems. id love to buy a Wii, but i always maintained that whatever i bought, NEEDED to have Katamari support. now, to me, Wii was MADE for katamari! but, i havent found anything, BUT, check this out: http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/games/...ul+Katamari.htm http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5774973 ive got a good deal on a Wii lined up, but i cant take i9t until i know for sure...IS katamari coming to Wii? anyone know?

deep freeze alternative for 64-bit?
breadandbubbles replied to breadandbubbles's topic in Software Hangout
no. i doesnt support the whole drive. partition or not. i made it very clear that i was partitioning. really though, i think they assumed that. i mean who in their right mind would really need to freeze 1.5tb's of data? im screwed, right? -
Basic partition question
breadandbubbles replied to breadandbubbles's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
i should say im sporting the Antec Skeleton (dont make fun, i really love the thing, and my blue orb II cooler works AWESOME with my 955 Black, thank you very much.) having more than two hard drives can be a problem. if i really wanted secure storage id get a Drobo or something (i cant afford it). i have to be aware of certain risks. i just want to minimize them, ya know? -
im used to running deep freeze on my pc, but i recently setup a new computer with two 1.5tb hard drives. deep freeze is currently incompatible with my drive. they say the maximum is 2tb, but i contacted their support and it was explained to me that many 1.5tb hard drives are also incompatible. unfortunately, im also running vista 64-bit, which wont work with steadystate, sandboxie, and many other apps. does anyone have any ideas? i should say that my build is in the Antec Skeleton, so i cant add another smaller, compatible drive.
-
im fairly new to this, but i currently have two 1.5tb hdd's. one of them has a 50gb partition for windows, and is otherwise about 90% full. the other is about half full. i want to put a 100gb partition on the second drive, to boot windows from, and eliminate the first poartition on the other drive. ive heard though, that partitioning a hard drive when its already got lots of files can be bad. obviously i want the new boot partition to be near the centre of the disc for quicker access to the page file, etc. are there risks here? is there anything i need to know in regards to optimizing my disk access for booting? i do have acronis' disk director quite at my disposal.

actually, i cant. im going to look into those options though. i really appreciate this.

unfortunately, we dont have Access here. i know many people run into these sorts of problems using Excel for what Access was designed for. so.......it cant be done? i didnt think so....

basically ive got an excel speardsheet going. very basic stuff, basically a column of names and a few columns of numbers related to those names. I have one sheet for every day of the week. BASICALLY, i have it so that each cell in column A of each sheet corresponds to the same cell in column A in the first sheet, called Template. so, Template has: A Jane Doe John Smith The Dude and then sheet 4, for example looks like: A__________________B____________C Jane Doe____________8____________9 John Smith__________11___________33 The Dude___________12___________55 of course, sheet 4's column A just copies itself from Templates column A. if i SORT Templates column A differently, i, naturally, get this: A The Dude John Smith Jane Doe BUT THEN, sheet 4 would look like this A____________________B____________C The Dude_____________8_____________9 John Smith____________11___________33 Jane Doe_____________12____________55 so now, Jane Doe, which before had '8' in column B has '12' in column B. the rows dont stay together! of course. so, obviously theres a better way to do this. i cant find the answer ANYWHERE. any help?

i was honestly jsut going to cut some holes in the side, and add some fans, but im looking at around 40 - 50 dollars for some big quiet fans and the pieces. youd recommend a better case? its fairly tight in there but i keep it organized. i'll look into these cases though.

ive got a small, crappy little acer desktop. its microatx. actually, its the Aspire 5100, if that helps at all. ive got AMD's Phenom 9500 in there, along with 4gb of ram, Saphires ATI HD4830 512mb, a hard drive and 2 dic drives. its all powered by a fairly cheap cooler master 500 watt PSU, and Vista home premium. theres a small fan at the back, id imagine, 8cm. and another one at the front (which i cant see cause of all the fancy decorational stuff, but id imagine its also 8cm). then of course theres the stock PSU and CPU fans. the removable panel has a few venting holes in it. NOW, why i need help. I just ut that new card in. Saphire did a good job, i think, of cooling her down. big fan, nice and quiet. id like to do a little, mild overclocking. i dont know much about it, but my understanding is juicing it up a tiny bit isnt so hard. i'd like to get a little more out of my HD4830, in any case. thing is, my case gets HOT. i mean it not a problem right now, but if i left her on all night last night, having jsut installed my new graphics card, and this morning the fans were going NUTS. very loud. im totally at a loss as to what to do. ineed to keep it cool. i really, really dont have a lot of money right now, but this cant continue. a friend actually recommended cutting a hole at the top, and putting a fan in, cause heat rises. whaddya think? thats harder to do than it sounds, but would it even be worth it?

crappy computer -> handle 9600?
breadandbubbles replied to breadandbubbles's topic in Hardware Hangout
WELL, you cant imagine how much ive appreciated this. youve really painted a picture for me. Ive got the hd4830 now. Went with the Saphire, and your right its the best. HUGE fan, nice and quiet. Went without a hitch, and threw in a new cooler master 500 watt. pretty cheap, at 40 bucks, but it seems to work great! Everythings wotrking fine. my only thing though: my case is HOT now!!! I know this is off topic, but my little microatx case is have a hard time with this. i have a rear fan. 8cm. a small front fan thats kind of hidden, though probably 8cm as well. then the cpu fan and psu fan. theres also some vent holes in the side of the case. SO, anyone have any ideas? a friend told me that since heat rises, i should cut a hole in the top and put a fan in there. should i take this to another thread? this has turned into a mildly technical thread about power that ive found quite helpful, but maybe this heat thing is too off topic? -
crappy computer -> handle 9600?
breadandbubbles replied to breadandbubbles's topic in Hardware Hangout
MAN, that is some excellent information. I really appreciate this. im sorry to be taking shortcuts and asking for handouts here, but you guys have really augmented the stuff i knew from googling. thank you so much. i found that exact card for a great price right near me. i'll ask for a power supply too. i just ask for one that can deliver '18A on your 12v line' and theyll know what i mean? -
crappy computer -> handle 9600?
breadandbubbles replied to breadandbubbles's topic in Hardware Hangout
sorry about that! its the Aspire 5100 desktop. i think its got a 320 power supply. I actually have no idea how to replace the power supply. Ive built computers, installed motherboards and cpu's, etc. but the power supply i use is always included in the case. is it a particularly difficult procedure? should I be concerned about compatibility. maybe I should google this a bit. other than the power supply, am i good to go for the 9600? does it matter if its GS, GT, GTO, etc? new confirmed working link here -
SO, i have a crappy Acer PC. My main problem is I dont have enough information on the specs of the mobo, or even what to looks for, but Id like to play CRYSIS. My PC's details are here: I wasnt planning on this. im not so stupid as to think I can simply tune this into a dream machine, but id like to try my best. Someone mentioned to me that even by upgrading my power supply my pc wont be able to handle the nvidia 9600. For the same price i can get either the 9600, or ATI's 4670. Based on what I've read,. 9600 wins hands down, but can my PC support it? im almost positive it can support the 4670, but if i can put the 9600 in there, id like to do so. any help?

i see. well, i downloaded the trial from microsofts website, so, no cd's. am i screwed?

so i tried installing the trial of perfectdisk 10 server edition on my server 2008 installation, and it says i need to use windows connector and share the program. what the heck? ive never even HEARD of windows connector. so i start googling and im seeing all kinds of posts, people saying their having trouble using it, and a couple of 'power packs' for it, and all this great stuff. but NOWHERE to download it from. i started to think it was included in ym server 2008 install, but i cant find it ANYWHERE. im starting to get really emotional here. i must be missing something. where can i find this connector stuff?
-
WELL, sorry guys, i didnt know i could use Synctoy to pair cross-platform network folders. gave it a shot and it worked like a charm! i have to say, i have really bad luck with Microsoft, but theres a few things they did right, and Synctoy seems to be one of em!

im out of my element here. I have two HDD's in my server, and for the sake of data protection, i wanted to make everything in my 'Pictures' folder automaticlly copy itself into the Pictures folder on my second HDD. I was also hoping that if i deleted a picture from one folder, it'll delete from both folders. anyone know how? or can direct me? cant seem to google my outta this one.

so i set up an apache server to serve up several folders on my pc. video, music, installs, etc. basically, if you type my ip into internet explorer, along with the folder you want, youll get the index. ex: http://***my-ip-here***/video/ youll get prompted for a password, after which youll get my index of videos. SO. what do i do next. basically what i want is a domain i type in, which would then prompt me for a password. afterward is a simple screen with four links: pictures video music other instead of ending my domain with '/video/' or '/music/' all the time. i was wondering if you guys had an ideas about this. i have a dynamic ip. i was going to buy the domain 'breadandbubbles.net', or whatever, and use dyndns.com to link it to my apache server, but now i want a link page. so i basically need to build an extremely simple website, right? can i build a website using frontpage or something, and host the file via apache, and have dyndns link to that instead? or...something? i dont know what to do at all. i have no experience with this kind of thing any suggestions?

i have three hdd's on my pc that i want to serve. D:, E:, and F:. I set D: as my root. so as soon as i access my server via internet explorer, and put in the password, i see the immediate contents of D:. what id like to know is, how do i show links to my E: and F: directories as well? i dont care about permissions or anything fancy. ive spent the last two days screwing around with the 'mod_alias' page on the apache website, and i have NO IDEA what im doing. if i can jsut add those directories, i'll finally be finished, and i cna move onto my life. please, can anyone tell me the code to add to the configuration file? please? is that asking too much? im trying to sound arrogant here. i know im basically asking for handholding, but if you could do this for me, i'll never bother you for anything again. ever. i promise!
