  1. ive given TONS of information. the specific dialog box in filezilla was just about the only vague thing about my post, and thats because i assumed people knew filezilla. my mistake. i mentioned, SEVERAL TIMES, that i was trying to at least set up my ftp to be read locally. and i mentioned other pcs on my network. so whether i have dynamic or static MEANS NOTHING when it comes to lan, and 'network' spells out R-O-U-T-E-R very, very clearly. and the handholding? im NOT the handholding type. i jsut want to get started. i jsut want to set up a basic LAN ftp. you could have explained it to me in HALF the amount of words you used above. absolutely. but you didnt. you did what everyone else does, and redirected me to another guide i dont understand. any moderators out there, feel free to delete this thread. im starting over.
  2. no. thank you though.
  3. i just.............. isnt there anyway to use an internet browser to access my files? i'll do anything. ANYTHING. please.
  4. just an update. i put my servers ip in when it wants to connect, jsut to see what would happen, and the port i chose during setup. just toi see what would happen. naturally, NOTHING DID. it wants a password too, but i dont know what the f*** its talking about. ive spent way too many hours on this. i think im going to give up, and ask for an external harddrive for christmas. i cant even look at my computer anymore without wanting to throw up.
  5. well, i took your advice, deciding on filezilla, and i lost a little more hair. i installed the server. and as SOON as i run it, it wants me to CONNECT to a server. WTF is it talking about? i want to CREATE one, not connect to one! i dont want a client. i want a server. wtf is going on... i go to file, and my only options are 'connect to server', 'disconnect', or 'quit'. online, all the googling i did has people telling me to go to 'options', and change this, or that. but it isnt there! its all greyed out! im f***ed! guys. please what the hell? everywhere i go online says this takes five minutes. this is supposed to be the easiest thing in the world, and im just trying not to cry. can someone please tell me how to CREATE a server? please? just a hint?
  6. i have my old post http://www.msfn.org/board/opening-world-t125235.html. i dont know if that helps with a few details believe it or not, i think you went over my head here. my understanding with VPn is that you need some sort of client installed on the remote pc to access the server? third party software isnt an option for me. IE is available everywhere, so that was my goal. i am a little concerned about security though... you said install the ftp server app, but doesnt server 2008 have that built in? thats what i was trying to use anyway... and ive never been able to make it work locally. its driving me crazy. i go through the whole ftp wizard. am i messing something up? for my ip i put my servers internal ip (192.168....). and port 21. just to make it work locally. as i said i keep getting 425's. my understanding regarding 425's is that its usually a permissions issue? or a firewall issue. but since im using server 2008's built in ftp thing, i wasnt expecting any problems with its firewall. and i have my home directory fully shared, as far as i know. maybe i did it wrong. i havent even tried getting to the virtual directories yet. so thats where im at. i dont even really know how to test it. i went to internet explorer on my server, and put in the ip. 192.168.1.102. nothing happened. so i tried adding the port. 192.168.1.102:21. and still nothing. then i tried the same thing from my other pc on the lan. nothing. so thats where im at. i think you were giving me too much credit with half of your response there! i cant even get it to work locally.
  7. i asked for help on setting up a home server. i waited patiently. i provided information. ive spent every night since that day googling. and reading. and going crazy. i know you guys think people usually ask stupid questions because they havent bothered to work it out on their own. and thats usually true. but SOMETIMES, people are just too STUPID and need HELP. PLEASE. for the LOVE OF GOD. its 1AM, FIFTEEN days later, and i STILL cant set up a basic FTP server. why? because my windows is faulty? because im an id***? i dont know. i have no idea. so here i am using what little sanity i have left to beg for some kindness. ftp server? anyone? i added the role. i set it up. i put my ip addresss and port into filezilla, and...NOTHING. i get a 425. over and over and over and over and over again. what i wanted was my own domain, that asked for a password then linked over SSL to my home ftp server. now i dont even care. that was WAY to ambitious. now i just want the ftp server. any mother teresa's out there with 2 or 3 minutes to spare?
  8. so i have a relatively old pc running 1gb ram, 3.2ghz prescott intel, 1.4 tb of storage, and Windows Server 2008 basically, i want to acess my files on the server from anywhere with an internet connection, using a web browser. in a prefect world, id like to type in https://www.breadandbubbles.com. it asks me for a password, i give it, and a folder tree appears representing all the files on the my server, available for me to transfer to my current laptop a thousand miles away. a fancy GUI would be nice. but a simple folder tree would be wonderful in itself. is ftp my answer? thing is, i know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about networking. im not looking for a hand-out here. no step by steps. that would be great, but ideally im just looking for some leads from you guys. anyone know of any tips? any well written howtos? websites that can help? anyone who can get my started? id REALLY appreciate it. i just cant seem to google my way out of this one. oh! and i was hoping to set up a website one day. im not sure if that matters. update: I just created a free account at dyndns.com, hoping for some insight there. found some great guides on VNC, which i hadnt considered but am now very excited about. otherwise, still baffled side question though: VNC, and online servers, etc. do they create strong security risks? i know theres always SOME risk with the internet, but should i be concerned? even if i dont give out my domain to anyone?

  10. i have a few hard drives in my Vista 32-Bit Home Premium PC, and four more in a home server. basically im looking for a good HDD monitor, tio monitor SMART status and maybe even temperature, for all the hard drives in question. i liked O&O's solution, DriveLED, but it doesnt network. any suggestions? im also curious about whetehr people have any faith in SMART or not. i realize its not compeltely accurate, and even the term itself is not standardized across the industry, so dont bother giving me that stuff. im jsut curious about your personal experiences. and is hard drive heat that much of an issue? networking HDD monitors fior vista? anyone? oh! and my server is actually currently down. i havent decided between XP Pro, Ubuntu server edition, and Windows Server 2008, or 2003 (i ahve copies of all of them except 2008, but i can get ti for a decent price if i have to), so..whatever works.
  11. i reformatted Windows 2000 Pro on ym moms pc, and installed the appropriate drivers fro her Dlink DFE-538TX Ethernet card. and kept getting code 10's. i messed around, installed lots of variations and versions of the drivers, all to no avail. code 10, code 10, code 10. so i put in another lan card. some crappy thing made by 'Netcore"? driver wizard insists that i never installed the card. card cant be found. i tried severl PCI slots. still problems. whats going on here? the dlink card worked before. do i need to update Windows 2000? right from the disc i dont even think it has SP 1. its an old release. but without the internet i cant update it. is that even relevent? i used this exact saem driver the exact same way 6 months ago. worked then. any ideas?
  12. im at my wits end here. i jsut got a new computer running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1, and i threw Windows Server Enterprise 2008 on my old pc. when i boot up windows server 2008, and log on, theres sposed to be some 'initial configuration' wizard?, but it crashes immediately. im jsut trying to run a few hard drives off of this server with music and video, that i can access from any computer on my network. i heard theres a way to make it so you can access your server from any internet based computer through a 'Remote Access VPN'? id LOVE to do that, but im not TOO worried about it right now. i jsut want to access the server from my home computers. i tried installingsomething from microsoft. something called 'remote server 2008 administration tools for vsta sp1'. i ran it on my Vista pc, and it did some update thing, and then...nothing. i guess i was hoping for some sort of GUI that would let me change the 'roles' of my server allowing me to set up a 'remote access vpn' so basically, without any of the wizards on ym server working, or at least, not accessible, i have to do everything the hard way. i dont mind using command line type stuff, but i just....i dont know. im not that smart. i like gui's. can anyone get me started here? ive spent hours looking for guides, but they all refer to these wizards and initial configurations. am i screwed...?
  13. sysprep? NIC?
  14. the first time i ever reformatted my PC using my Windows XP Pro disc, i couldnt activate over the internet. i had to call them. nd ive had to call them every time since. one customer service rep said that its possible someone got a hold of my key, or something, through illegal methods? im not exactly sure... i asked him a few questions (because i REALLY hate calling them. it takes forever), but he didnt know the answers. he offered to put me through to another department, and i declined, not caring THAT much. but now...after thinking about it..i DO care. i just dont understand it. i thought Windows knew what your computer was like, but as i thought about it, i realized...how? can they recognize you through your IP? or your mac? ive heard of mac spoofers. is that all it takes? if so...cant they do anything about it? it cant be as simple as installing a router and running a mac spoofer, can it? thats not fair to the rest of us. can someone enlighten me on this? how do other people around the world using my serial key avoid detection? microsofts abig company. if they find someones IP, cant they contact their internet provider, like i heard they do with tracking child porn weirdos?
  15. thank you my friends, for the strong words of encouragement. they give me hope. i'll re set upo my account and see if i can find it this time.
  16. If this post seems too long, please just read the shortened version of my situation at the bottom. im eager for any assistance you might be able to offer. i am running a windows Xp Pro machine, with a partitioned hard drive. i made C: the smallest part of the partition at 20gb. the remaining 200 or so fall under D:. long ago i decided to apply deep freeze to my computer, which a lot of people think of as stupid, but with freuent visiting reletives (7 younger siblings included), housemates, and friends, it works for me. actually, the MAIN reason i did it is iTunes, at first. friends with ipods could install itunes, take any of my 30,000 songs, and with one reboot, itunes is gone. the important part to note here is that my D: drive is NOT frozen. and its also the home of a vast majority of my installed programs. also 'My Documents', 'Favourites', 'Desktop'...everything is on D:. but ive been running into a few rare exception when it doesnt work. Microsoft Student gives me a few problems, but nothing i cant work around with ease. im not really an email person, but after learning about 'imap' instead of pop3, i thought id give my Outlook 2007 a try. everything set up fine, and it works great, but i know that if i reboot, itll all go away. now, with the way Outlook works, everything you do in your account is saved to a "Personal Folder File". My Question is This: How do i make my account, and thus my personal folder file, in Outlook 2007 (or 2003) work of off the D: drive, not the C: drive, so that all my emails and ...well...everything in Outlook wont go away when i reboot my DeepFrozen machine? i have found a few settings that lead me to belive im CLOSE to the answer, but it never works. is it even possible? i feel like it SHOULD be, considering possible business situations like this...though with Microsoft Exchange, maybe not... anyway, does anyone know how to do it? even in Outlook 2003? please?!
  17. i am a huge fan of DVDFAB platinum. heres a screenshot, so you can quickly see eveything it can do. its capable of every feature ive ever seen regarding DVD's, or most video files for that matter. the downside is...its 50 bucks american. but if your going to pay 30 anyway...i dunno. whats another 20 bucks for software you KNOW you'll love? well....Software that I'LL know you'll love.
  18. alright, those are good suggestions, and i'll surely give them a shot. i dont know if you noticed though, that i disabled all encryption on the nwtowrk. i figured there was something about the WPA 2 that wasnt working, so i took off all encryption, not even WEP. and it STILL didnt detect the network. so now i dont know WHAT to do. do you think its her security software. unfortunately, she has norton internet security.
  19. my friend and his mom moved across the city last week. my friend has a new laptop himself, sporting windows vista. i dont know which version. his mom, though, has a desktop pc running windows xp, and it has a usb wireless device she keeps plugged in at all times. i went over to set up her PC for her. for various reasons they needed to get a new wireless router. they got a brand new Linksys WRT54G (one of my faves). they didnt wnat file sharing or anything, so i juse hooked up the router to their cable modem, set up a WPA 2 encryption, and away we go. my friends laptop picked it up fine. great connection all over the house. but for some frusterating reason that desktop pc cant even see the network. says there no network in range when i use the standard windows wireless connection window. i tried changing the encryption to WPA, then taking it off entirely. she really needs her computer for her job (she works from home), and i have no idea what to do. she packed up her pc, unpacked it, and now the wireless doesnt work. im getting indications that the usb wireless stick DOES work, because theres that wireless icon in the tray. and it worked the day before. she didnt install/uninstall anything. tommorrow im going to bring a Dlink 624 over, and another newer dlink i have. the 1310, i think? just to see if theres some incompatibilities with the usb device and the linksys router. i'll also try throwing the stcik onto my friends laptop, to see if the device works from there (which i really dont wnat to do. especillay since his laptop is vista, and i HATE dealing with vista..) i just wanted to know if there were any suggestions. i have no idea what to do here. ive never seen this before, and i cant seem to phrase my googling right because im not finding any leads.
  20. i made a dvd a few yeears ago of a fishing trip. i used Nerovision to turn a few avi. files into a dvd. now the original files are lost, and all i have is the dvd. i wanted to send jsut one chapter, or episode, i guess? is there a way i can extract each of the episodes or chapters you see in the menu into its own avi. file. theyre not copy protected or anything, i dont know if that matters. ive googled all around, and installed a few safe trials of "dvd to avi." software things, but i dont think theyre doing what id like. maybe im not using them right? anyone have a favourite? so far i have dvdfab, and magic converter.
  21. wow. thats a GREAT idea. unfortunately, i dont have access to his PC right now. i'll give that a shot the next time i can. in the meantime, i jsut threw Opera at him. he doesnt like new things, but Opera is amazing, and the interface is very similar. he doesnt have any spyware protection either, so im hoping Opera'l help a bit. he loved that speedial thing. and flash player installed jsut fine in opera. man...im really bad with the 'jsut''s!
  22. i know its only been a couple of hours, but i really need help with this. does anyone know anything about activex controls in vista?
  23. alright, a friend of mine recently purchased a laptop, sporting Windows Vista Home premium. he has the latest Internet Explorer. for some reason, i CANNOT get flash player to install. i go to the website, and everything goes as normal in the adobe download centre, i finally click install, and im moved to a new page instead of that yellow activx bar appearing at the top, asking for my permission to install the control, i get a yellow bar saying that the control has been blocked. theres an option "more information", which leads to a dead end. the status bar at the bottom jsut says 'error on page" my friend is also unable to do any online banking. he logs onto his banking service, and nothing happens. jsut..."error on page" ive spent days googling around. i ended up doing that activex test at pcpitstop? it didnt work. i didnt get the red 'x', just a blank square. the website states: "If you see a blank space, ActiveX is probably working properly, but not scripting." so i tried looking around for scripting solutions, but i have no idea what that means. following a number of instructions, i spent a lot of time in Internet Explorer's security settings, in the 'custom settings' window, enabling and disabling things. nothing made any difference. it was interesting, he does have adobe flash player in his add/remove. i uninstalled it and tried installing it again, to no effect. i dont know where to turn. can someone give me a lead?
  24. what the heck!!? why is this even an argument? in the past, symantec has been more of a virus than anythign else. i thought this was common knowledge! for one thing it uses HUGE system resources. that is an ABSOLUTE FACT. to make it worse for symantec, ESET is INSANELY more effective. amongst the best in the industry. Its heuristics are unbeatable. eset either matches or beats symantec in every way when it comes to detection. so you have eset, that uses virtually no system resources AND catches more. then of course there was the discovery that Norton 2005 actually ran as a rootkit, behind the scenes, the only antivirus to do so, so you didnt actually know what the hell it was doing (and why it uses so much resources). it was practically a virus. even after uninstalling, you needed special tools to completely remove it. i dont know. im not an expert. im really not. if youre concerned about virus detection: ESET. footprint: Eset. the rest of it...whatever. most of the problems ive had with peoples PC's in the past has been because of symantec. either because it completely failed to stop anything, or (even more often) it was the virus itself.
  25. WOW. SEATOOLS IS AMAZING. it worked like a charm. you guys are right, spinrite IS crap. or, at least, it is only capable of fixing a very specific problem that i, at least, dont seem to have. its certainly not a miracle solution. BUT MY FILES ARE NOW READABLE. no more cyclic redundancy for me! thanks guys.
