Problem with TXTSETUP.SIF...SOS..
Alanoll replied to mssaad66's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I don't completely understand what you're trying to do. Just add some files to txtsetup.sif so that Windows copies them like any other setup fiel correct? If that is the case....then ok. Try removing the files your added (add a ; at the beginning of the line) and see if the image works (incase you did other things) then add in one at a time. P.S. I'm not entirely sure where the error is occuring. If it's when setup is FULLY completed, then it's one of your programs you're installing. Perhaps a regtweak or something. But it if it's just after the filecopy stage, then try the above. -
looks like perhaps a wrong file version? are you using the proper file? SP1 file for SP1 and SP2 file for SP2. Also, IF the file in the registry DOES NOT EXIST you will get the error as well. As for the _ or not, if the file is compressed originally, then it should have it at the end as well. In I386 it SHOULD have the _ on it, but it you copy it over in say the $OEM$ folder, then it should NOT be compressed.

problem with unattended boot screen kernel
Alanoll replied to ihaveabu's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
u could have said that earlier. thanks a lot! will test it now! well.....technically, it has been said before. In the Cosmetics thread. Perhaps not those exact steps, but the basic principle is the same. Though I find if people read alittle and not get it handed to them step by step, they are capable of continuing on to other advanced things. lol. Lesson learned. -
if you want to install everything just use /S and everything gets installed. as for taking a snapshot, get Wise Install Studio or InstallShield Adminstudio, and take a snapshot. lol. Both will do it, and then create an MSI from the changes.

problem with unattended boot screen kernel
Alanoll replied to ihaveabu's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Alright step by step..... 1. Grab ntoskrnl.ex_ and ntkrnlmp.ex_ from your I386 diretory. Copy them to another folder. Open a command prompt to that folder and type expand ntoskrnl.ex_ OEMkrnl.exe expand ntkrnlmp.ex_ Dualkrnl.exe 2. Edit the kernel files the way you want. 3. Create the CMD file with the script it in. Save that in $OEM$\$$\ and call it bootscreen.cmd (full path would be %XPCD%\$OEM$\$$\bootscreen.cmd with %XPCD% being the path to your XP setup folder. At the same time, copy your two kernel files to this location as well. 4. In your winnt.sif file, add this.... [GuiRunOnce] %systemroot%\bootscreen.cmd 5. Recreate image and test. And before you think something hasn't worked yet (the bootscreen hasn't changed). Once the desktop loads, try restarting and see if it appears then. If not, copy the boot.ini file here. -
problem with unattended boot screen kernel
Alanoll replied to ihaveabu's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
yes, there are. According to txtsetup.sif, setup copies them from I386, not the cab files. So yes, they are there. but they're not called ntoskrnl.exe , but rather ntoskrnl.ex_ and you have to expand them. And for the record, they are there from the GOLD XP, updated with SP1 and SP2. If you extract the SP2 exe network install file, you'll find a ntoskrnl.ex_ in it's I386 directory that is copied over to your XP source during integration that would be the when (the cmdlines.txt file) but I could have sworn I suggested you change it to GUIRunOnce. -
if you just want one for yourself, then no. not really. It's a simple snapshot.... but my MSI is intended for EVERYONE which means it has to include EVERYTHING and the whole point of the MSI is to allow us to select the components

get the ones that are in I386. use those. when are you running the the batch file? what does your boot.ini say? -
problem with unattended boot screen kernel
Alanoll replied to ihaveabu's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
those ARE my configs If it's not booting, your kernel is messed up. Wrong version, or your modifying it wrong. As for the two entries, perhaps you should understand what the script does before using it. It creates a copy of the original entry, with the name "Windows XP professional" and appends /kernel= to the entry. What happens when it boots? error message? -

Change in plans....perhaps..... Instead of fixing this issue, should I update the MSI to 5.05 and fix the issue at the same time, or maintain two MSI's? Your call, but I must point out, your decision may not really happen It all depends on time.....

problem with unattended boot screen kernel
Alanoll replied to ihaveabu's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I should point out that the name REALLY doesn't matter, and anyone who truly looks at the code would realize this. change /kernel=OEMkrnl.exe to /kernel=WHATEVERYOUWANT.EXE and it will still work. All that matters is that you have the single kernel name in the right spot and the same for the dual kernel. Also, I forget if I mentioned it, but this adds in a failsafe so that you don't have to wait the whole install process over again, just to see if your apps work. Just change the timeout line to a different value then 0, and you should get the "boot select screen" during startup. -
problem with unattended boot screen kernel
Alanoll replied to ihaveabu's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
But you STILL have to use the proper version of the kernel And for the record, I suggest you run the batch from GUIRunOnce, and not cmdlines.txt. But that just might be personal preference. I like to see Windows start up before changing core system files -
I'd like to remind people this forum is also for discussion What is up with people's fascination to replace system files? Main files of interest, ntoskrnl.exe and logonui.exe why replace them? why not use a renamed file and then change the paths to the new files? ntoskrnl.exe you can change by using /kernel in boot.ini and logonui.exe you can tell Windows to use a different one simply by adding a registry key. so why do you do it? the main problem with the kernels as of late, is simply people download one from themexp.org and expact it to work, and don't realize that different version conflicts are bound to happen.

Giving Your Windows Cosmetic Surgery
Alanoll replied to b0r3d's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
why are you asking if something works? the method in this thread works. Combine with my batch code, and it selects which kernel to use. SO edit both (making sure they're the right versions) No need to replace files in CABs or overwrite the original kernel (for updating issues) -
problem with unattended boot screen kernel
Alanoll replied to ihaveabu's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
what is it with people and changing the original kernel and then overwriting it. Second, simply editing ntkrnlmp.exe and then putting it in $OEM$\$$\System32 (without renaming) won't work, as windows uses ntoskrnl.exe. the MP kernel is renamed to ntoskrnl.exe during install. Second, the ntfs.sys error is due to version conflicts with the kernel and files. Use the right kernel. You could do what I do, look in the customize thread for the code I had, and have both kernels. VMware does NOT emulate the hyperthreading processor. -
have you tried to see what happens if you remove the deletes? you said it's perhaps the favorites.....if so, find out which it is hanging up on and remove it and see if it fixes it.
-
and for all the others, do what wraith did from a current windows installation, open up a command prompt and type SET. That will show all of them for GUIRunOnce executions

Giving Your Windows Cosmetic Surgery
Alanoll replied to b0r3d's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Why do I see a double post? I should point out, as in your other thread, the kernel really does matter. If you have a hyperthread processor, you must use the hyperthread kernel (it's ntoskrnl.exe in your normal install). There is a guide here (check threads of interest) on how to edit the kernel, but if there isn't, just do a simple search at themexp.org (the How to make section) or search at google. -
oh goodlord.....that's just asking for trouble wait till people try to do things with the program it's not meant to, and then complain the program doesn't work. Just wait, it will happen. I wonder how much UI stuff you're going to add..... I'm personally interested in a good kernel editor....but that might be getting technical....

you know that has been annoying me for quite sometime.....I shall look as well. Let the race begin.... Hmm, I never thought that people would actually try to use the main install program to install the others. I always thought people used the individual folders and setup programs for each component.
