  1. How did you get the ISS file? UniExtract? (had to get the latest "inno unpacker" from sourceforge to get it to work.) So, to be clear, these ar NOT InstallShield ISS Files, they are INNO Setup ISS files - two different types of packagers and NOT interchangeable! You'd best to get the UniExtract and latest Inno Unpacker, run it against the EXE files you downloaded and look at what's extracted. You'll have to use the Inno Setup to "alter" anything, test in a Virtual Machine, then actually used (after testing). Quit thinking InstallShield - NOT THE SAME!!! (go read the dang Inno Website help and download it - FREE!!!) edit - and the Avro has several versions of that module (depending on the version of Office installed). I suspect this has more to do with the MS-Office wanting to do the Update, and not the Avro (I see no registry entry for that). edit2 - found it in the ISS - Name: "updatecheck"; Description: "Automatically check for update every week (anonymous)"; GroupDescription: "Other options"; MinVersion: 0.0,5.0; Bottom line, download Inno Setup, the UniExtract+UpdatedUnpacker, READ READ READ, change what you want, then REBUILD the Installer (using Inno Setup).
  2. Seriously, do a little searching before starting a new topic. Short answer - YES! Long Answer - No, not ALL of them since some of them are NOT HotFixes (e.g. IE8). Personally, I've used (or am using and testing) nLite and this without the IE8 update and it appears to be good (only IE8 shows up). Other lists and "Add-Ons" exist and are scattered throughout MSFN (with associated links). Sub-forum with lists... Legwork is on you then you ask for help, not the other way around...
  3. Somewhere on the Tower (the "box") should be a label (usually on the back) telling the Specific Model and usually there's something on the tower on the front (e.g. Gateway+E3200, a "generic" model number). We require the Model Number to obtain specific information (the documentation). Just the CPU doesn't help - it's the MoBo/BIOS info we need (based on Model ID from the tag on back). ? Did you try F2 at all? This indicates that (generally speaking) Gateway uses either F1 or F2 (press/tap repeatedly immediately after power-on). And I repeat - WHEN you turn it on, not AFTER the Logo appears and floats by - too late! This by chance? "Gateway ATXSTF OXN Select K7-950"...
  4. In addition, (safe bet) in BIOS set "Enable Legacy USB"; also (at least on my Logitech) you have to Sync the Mouse/Keyboard with the Receiver (buttons - read the documentation). Being Wireless should be irrelevant (just hardware) - your problem is more of the USB-side (or the Sync issue). Strangely, plugging in BOTH USB and PS/2 (PLUS USB Legacy) sometimes allows Windows to pick them up - shut down remove PS/2 then turn back on. (Depends on the MoBo's BIOS) edit - the receiver by itself won't be "found" - the KeyBoard/Mouse has to be "on" and "synced" for them to be recognized.
  5. Not tried this (just a thought), have you considered MKISOFS (free - create ISO from a single folder and all contents) and IMGBURN (also free - not sure if command line)? AFAIK, there is no Command Line facility/product to do "all of the magical things at once". Some kind of "prep work" has to be done first. Look at any GUI for the "features" (including "on the fly" options) - why would they (any commercial vendor) bother to insert all of these (probably a lengthy command line) into a command version? Even the Windows facility requires "drag-and-drop" before "burn compilation"... A CMD script to "collect to folder"-> "create iso"->"burn iso"->"delete work files/folders" seems necessary in your case. MS Burn an ISO - one might be led to believe that if it works for Vista, it may work for Win7...
  6. OK, explains the rationale behind the "upgrade" question. Herbalist is relatively correct on most (all?) points (I read it quickly). One advantage that comes to mind (2K vs 98) is the disabling of unwanted/unneeded services (unlike 98 - doable but in the Registry). A lite but mean A-V is also needed as well as a lite but mean Firewall (I might also suggest, in addition to above, the last FREE Outpost Firewall -works on either OS - search for it on MSFN and you'll find some helpful tips as well). Odd that you can only get 28K - Could you tell us what kind of Modem is in that box? Maybe it's an ancient USR/3COM that just don't hack it (cheap one-time purchase of a v90/92 modem). I have several 28.8/33.6's just lying around (yuck) and two REAL ISA-slot v90(56k) Modems. Wish I could help ya out, but we're not allowed (against the rules). Don't bother with eBay or CraigsList since they are cheap even at Best Buy. Start->Control Panel->System->Device Manager (under Modems) (forgot... if it's a REAL modem, sometimes a 33.6 can be "upgraded" to 56. also, the right drivers? "softmodems" usually have ability to "soft-upgrade".)
  7. HP/CPQ doesn't pull the krap Dell does. An Acer Netbook has the WinRE and the full set of WIM/SWM (2 partitions only). Dell stinks (an opinion)! "Altered" power supplies? Seriously? ("Dude, you're gettin' a H#LL")Make the Recover CD's/DVD's (bet it works the same as Acer, eMachine, etc.) for insurance. Also bet you'll see the WIM/SWM sets on them... Also, this implies that the FULL SET is on the Recover Partition. Otherwise (sometimes JUST the Drivers/Apps), you MUST have gotten the Recovery (OS-part) DVD when shipped.
  8. Well, I'll be! Didn't I indicate that the packages are already packaged Inno and the link I provided was to use the switches indicated with the already packaged and downloaded EXE files. There is no point in attempting to duplicate ("create a package") what the downloaded package(s) already does. Just add the appropriate switches (as indicated in the link I gave before). I did not suggest using the Inno Setup to create an ISS (or anything else) , I suggested using the Switches! What's the problem? Why "create a package" just to Silent Install something already pre-packaged? Please explain why! (p.s. I downloaded both of these, no good to me, just to investigate for the solution) Direct quote (from the link I gave) - (all related to SourceForge)
  9. "Autostreamer"??? A 'stripped-down" nLite! nLite does the EXACT SAME THING! And then some (if you like), adding nothing special at all (if only slipstream the Service Pack); just as if you did it "by hand". And in reference to that single poster, did they start with a "clean" or "stripped down" CD (yes, they do exist). Slipping SP2 may very well have "filled in" some "stripped out" items. Do what you want and test in a Virtual Machine; you'll find that the best info, advice, and tools are right here on MSFN. edit - Yes, I have slipstreamed a "FULL" RTM ("SP0") directly with SP3, compared to a "FULL" pre-Integrated SP3 and they are nearly identical. After further checking, you'll find that the differences are due to... Slipstream/Integration (uncompressed files, components "missed" during removal, etc.). Been there, done that, and can state conclusively they are, for all intents and purposes, identical. (and can also tell you specifically what the difference is between each release)
  10. I've found "redirectors" in the LSP before. You could search for "LSPFix", download it, run it (DON'T let it fix anything yet!), and list what's in the windows. (FWIW) - P.S. Some antivirii think it's a virus/trojan because it alters the registry, so temporarily disconnect from the iternet (unplug) and temporarily disable AntiVirus.
  11. Did you try what I suggested? Uninstall Driver, set Compatibility on Setup, then run it? (BTW, I already downloaded the RAR - it has none, the original one from original link is wrong, this DriverGuide one is the one I have). (lots of items removed in the following fro brevity) ; MasterNT5.inf -- H215DT5.inf ; Version: 5.03.13 ; Capabilities: Data Fax Voice Speakerphone ; Controller: HSFHWBS2 ; Daa Type: STANDARD ; Codec: 20410 ; Hardware type: D100 [Version] Class = Modem ClassGUID = {4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Provider = %Author% CatalogFile = H215DT5.cat DriverVer=05/15/2002, 5.03.13.00 [ControlFlags] ExcludeFromSelect= PCI\VEN_141A&DEV_2015&SUBSYS_2015141A [Manufacturer] %Mfg% = HSF_MODEM [HSF_MODEM] %HSFModem% = ModemX, PCI\VEN_141A&DEV_2015&SUBSYS_2015141A [Strings] CompanyName = "Generic" ProductName = "Sevel SoftK56 Modem" Author = "CXT" Mfg = "Generic" HSFModem = "Sevel SoftK56 Data Fax Voice Speakerphone" OEM_STRING = "Sevel SoftK56 Data Fax Voice Speakerphone" GMI_Value = "CXT" ;Manufacture Identification GMM_Value = "SoftK56 Data Fax Voice Speakerphone" ;Manufacturer Model GMR_Value = "5.03.13" ;Manufacturer Revision FMI_Value = "CXT" ;Fax Manufacture Identification FMM_Value = "Sevel SoftK56 Data Fax Voice Speakerphone" ;Fax Manufacture Model FMR_Value = "5.03.13" ;Fax Manufacture Revision UIPATH = "CNXT_MODEM_PCI_VEN_141A&DEV_2015&SUBSYS_2015141A"Don't know if this would work, but you could add the remainder (missing part) of the HWID to the string and maybe attempt an "Update Driver" (keep the original ZIP file just in case). ...and when you say "nothing works", do you mean the Manager lists it the same? edit - ARGGGHHH! 32-bit drivers on 64-bit OS!!! Yank it out, find the Chip/ChipSet Identifiers (right on the chip/chips) and post them. You may be out of luck (it also has, if that's your photo of the modem, Mic-In/HeadPhone-Out) making it work. Worth a shot searching against the ChipID though - may actually find one to work.
  12. Ditto - Gateway can be any of a small handful. The "magic key" has to be pressed when you first turn it on. Gateways are usually DEL or F1 (AFAICR). Also, with the documentation, there may be a jumper you can temporarily change to Clear CMOS (reset the BIOS to Defaults). Sometimes when you first power-on you can quickly repeatedly tap the basic set until one "hits" (ESC F1 F2 F10 F11 DEL). Once in, you can usually find a setting that will make it show it to you. Having originally had WinME (from the factory?) on it it has to be a circa 2000/2001 (pre-XP).edit - maybe the term "Boot" confused you - Two separate Boots involved - First is BIOS (when power on or CTL+ALT+DEL when in e.g. DOS) - Second is OS Boot (based on BIOS Boot Sequence).
  13. FYI, you can ZIP/Compress (7-Zip, WinRAR, WinZip, or XP built-in) and upload that (it's the .EXT of .MMP that was rejected). Besides, it's preferable since it reduces the size of the "upload"....And I see another member is helping (see above post). Odd consumption... A hidden "service"? You could maybe try MalWareBytes and/or SpyBot. Something is running that shouldn't be (malware - has to be). The "blocked sites" is the clue...
  14. Well, that's just ridiculous! After comparing all of the available "downloads" set up by different members, yours appears to be correct. After nLite, the only thing showing was IE8, the Optionals, and a couple of Drivers. Phishing? Malware Distribution? Spam? Seriously??? Every single file (except the "Add-Ons") comes directly from the Microsoft website and the Add-Ons are built directly from Microsoft components and have been repeatedly posted here and on other sites. So ! (HAHAHA! MS Software is Malware!!!!)
  15. That's already known and been discussed. There's no need to download (and burn to CD) anything. The OP already has what they need without additional software (as dencorso suggested and I outlined in the procedure).
  16. OK, did a check - This one is the same one I have and this one appears to be newer. However, after downloading the "complete package" from Apache (the previous post link) it appears the second is for Win 98(?) and the 2K/XP folder inside is empty (prev. post indicated the single package was incorrect). Go to the first link (this post above), hover mouse over "download", fill in the "captcha". A "downloader" will be downloaded - save it in a folder (e.g. "Apache"). Run it (nothing installs), decline installing any krapware, it will download the file to where you point it to. Click the "X" upper-right to klobber the "sign up/participate". Unzip the contents, right-click the "HXFSetup.exe", click "Properties", and make it "XP-Compatibility mode", "Apply", and run it. HTH (as I said, it worked for my Cuz, but that was a different device). Also, for kicks, "uninstall" the "unknown device" before running the installer (may/may-not help).
  17. RATS! I happen to have an Apache with the CD-ROM. All I found was (your exact modem) in H215DT5.INF (all the others, including the one in other post are for 9X/ME/NT/2K) for XP - in folder A56SP-RS (Conexant Chipset). It might be possible (using the Setup program) to "force" the install by using the XP-Mode. I've done that with Integrated Sound on my cousin's Vista PC and it worked. Wanna give it a go? I could upload (if I'm allowed - check with moderator/supervisor first) - 2.75mb (unzipped)... edit - Is this it? Driver/manual, etc here (XP is the highest supported, tho). (edit again) _ NOPE - Driver is NOT the same as mine. Hang loose, storm brewing shutting down PC - will get back w/you...
  18. Huh! If it were me I'd run CCleaner and let it delete the standard things, reboot, then run a Full Scan on every partition just for insurance. Hope you have all the necessary patches (including the unofficial ones) installed. (--of course you aren't me, but hey, opinions are like...) FWIW, sometimes Surface Scan finds things but then when you use the manufacturer's utility to "fully destructive check the disk" (which resets to Factory, clearing to zeros the MBR and all) then install all over again then Surface scan finds... NADA! (wierd!) Done that before (BTW, usually the ManuScan if finding a bad sector just reassigns the track to "elsewhere", a set of sectors reserved for just that purpose IF any are available.... AFAIK.) Glad your back up (was looking scary for a while, following the topic events...).
  19. Both have been created with INNO Setup. More information here. Scroll down to the INNO section to find the associated Silent switches..
  20. Just checked with an Unattended - F10 is ok, Repair Option is gone. So, appears that the advice given in previous post is correct. Here is confirmation. Bottom line, do everything that's needed except the Unattended part to retain the Repair option (unattended is usually for a New install like an OEM performs). (aarghhh! wiped my test bed in Virtual PC double-checking this - it's fine, tho 'cause planned on redoing it ennyhoo...)
  21. It appears that both of you are correct. The REM's at the end should precede the WGET lines (just descriptives). The lines with ECHO (comments lines) also have some errors that makes the BAT think they are variables, etc. Interestingly enough, the "chase" sequence isn't being carried out and within the downloaded files (the ones that do download) have the actual location of the given file (they are all the download "confirmation" screens with the embedded "click here if failure" addresses). Not sure why it isn't working (the "chase"). Guess they must have thought this was more convenient than manually adding the true filename paths? BTW, thx for the investigation and "corrected" BAT file. It supplies some info that I need. (why are we downloading SP3 by default??? what if SP3 is already integrated?)
  22. Ponch could be correct on either point. Have you tried Tripedacus' suggestion? Usually, there's an option you can select to "Activate by Phone" instead of "Activate by Internet" If not... As you state this is a Retail Full/Upgrade CD (not OEM), so allen2's comments don't apply. So... Disconnecting LAN/Connecting Directly has nothing to do with the problem. If it can't be done via Tripedacus' recommendation - Have you changed the Boot sequence in the BIOS (F2/ESC/F10/F11/DEL key or whatever the MoBo uses)? It's probably set to boot HDD first so you'll never boot from CD or Floppy. BTW, there's a set of Boot Disks (4 of them) available at MS for a particular CD's Service Pack level. And begs the question - is this an RTM CD, i.e. No Service Pack integrated? If so and a Service Pack had been installed on the running XP, you'll have to integrate (preferably SP3) into the CD's contents before a Repair/Over-the-top Re-Install. Note that this is not a Boot to CD then select "Repair" - you must tell it Install then tell it to install to the original/failing installation. Finally, if the CD is an Upgrade CD then it's not Bootable and you'll have to have a prior Windows to install it (e.g. 95, 98, ME, 2kPro). BTW, "butchery" at the HW level was not suggested as it can't be done (not an option - has to be done at the BIOS-Boot+OS level). (sorry about the repeated/quoted text, guys - just making my comments quite clear.) edit - and on a final note (ref. Ponch) without a valid for that CD Key, you're toast! You'll have to extract the key from the "buggered" system via special CD-Bootable tools and pray it's not a blacklisted.
  23. Has this already been nLited? (note - the original RTM version had a bug in the Recovery console as well - don't remember the exact KB Hotfix but had to do with the Admin Password not being accepted - not generally distributed except to OEM's) edit - just an addendum - The KB/Q that I mentioned is Q308402 and may be irrelevant if booting from an untouched (not nLited/altered) CD. The Boot Disk sets (RTM, SP1, SP2 available for download) have the corrected files (unsure about the RTM set).
  24. You haven't specifically stated that you don't have a Physical Floppy Drive. However, after simple test, here is the procedure to use with an OEM-Bootable Win98SE CD. 1 - Boot to CD and select "Boot to CD-ROM" 2 - enter "FDISK" at the prompt 3 - choose Create Primary Partition 4 - When asked to "Use All and Set Active" choose "NO" 5 - Create first partition (will be the C-drive) the size you want 6 - Press ESC and select "Set Active Partition" - pick the new (only) partition 7 - Create second partition (an Extended) * note - will lead to created a Logical Drive and will take remainder of the HDD 8 - ESC completely out of FDISK and Reboot to "Boot to CD-ROM" 9 - enter "CD E:\WIN98" then enter "E:" (without quotes) 10 - Format both partitions 11 - enter "SETUP" (without quotes) - You are now installing 98SE on the Active (C-drive) Partition Done! (may have skipped a couple of specifics, eg ESC to get to a particular Menu, on the FDISK part - was in a hurry...) Don't forget to allow Boot to HDD on next reboot (it finishes up the Windows install HDD). At step 11, you can optionally create ("MD") a Directory (call it WinInst or whatever) and copy the Contents of the CD's Win98 Folder to it, then Change Directory to it (as in step 9) and run Setup from there to prevent Windows from asking for the CD whenever you Add/Remove Windows Components. HTH (and hope this is right - again, in a hurry) edit - Forgot - not sure, but you might have to set the Sata to IDE mode in the BIOS.
