  1. Once sharing in enabled you should come up in network neighborhood. I'm assuming this is a "workgroup" intranet and not a "domain" controlled environment.
  2. Have you tried re-installing, or installing SP2? Wouldn't hurt trying a repair in network connections just to see if your IP's not scrambled.
  3. IE History clears itself out after 30 days. Haven't really investigated configuring this. I get users who use their histories as their link page. Then one day they're all gone. I tell them about the settings and advise them to use bookmarks instead history.
  4. The more information--the better! What kind of hardware you using, what kind of operating system you using, how are you transfering your data, is there an alternate method of transfering possible, have you made any substantial changes to your hardware of software before this started happeing...
  5. Might want to right click on my computer and check to see if remote connection is enabled also wouldn't hurt to check your sharing and security settings.
  6. Has it always done this or is this a relatively new occurance? Could be some processes running in the back ground. What operating system are you using? First I'd run a crapware sweeping/cleaning utility (Adaware SE, Spybot S&D...). Then if you're using XP, type "msconfig" in the run box. This will give you an indication of what processes are currently installed and running. You'll also have the ability to de-select any applicatioins that are have installed without your permission.
  7. Hmmmm, something's not jiving there. Only thing I can think of that would cause this is if the manufacturer of your laptop used a different XP operating system then what the code is keyed for. This happens if you use a OEM XP cd-key with a volume license license installation disk. Microsoft should straighten this out for you. Call again hopefully you'll get someone who is more than helpful. Give them all the laptop info (S/N , model type...). This really sounds like they were using a different OS then what the key is for. If this was pre-activated by manufacturer with the key on the case then you're re-installation should have been a snap.
  8. In Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP you can lock down the position of the Desktop icons using a couple of files from the MS Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit [5 KB, free, unsupported]. Place Layout.dll in %windir%\System (Win95/98/ME) or %systemroot%\System32 (WinNT/2000/XP) and then double-click on Layout.reg. From now on, whenever you right-click on the "Recycle Bin" or "My Computer" icons, you can see a new option: "Save [or Restore] Desktop Icon Layout". There are several 3rd party tools that also do this, but these files are free and only 14 KB in size." http://www.nthelp.com/proggy/layout.zip

    Conflicts?

Huh, the picture is becoming a little more complete. So you installed service pack 2 and then you noticed a bunch of your devices (drivers) are knocked out--namely your network adapter? Try removing your network adapter in device manager and then restarting your PC. The driver is already in your system folder and if it was working before the service pack was installed, it's most likely the correct driver. When new hardware is found after re-boot, let windows find driver and see if that resolves your nic issue. Once you get your connection back, then try getting back on Microsoft Updates and do a custom update. See if Microsoft update can fix the bugs it created.

    Conflicts?

First I'd check microsoft updates, instead of express, select custom and see if Microsoft finds any hardware updates. Install these and see if they remedy your device Attention icons. If that doesn't work, I'd go online, find the latest driver for that device, remove the existing one, re-install or update that device.

    Restrict Users

Go into user accounts in Control Panel as administrator. Set up a user account for each user you want to limit. Select "restricted user" in their user properties. Give them passwords to get to desktop. To deny multiple users on one PC, go into c:\programfiles\internet explorer, right click on the IE executable file, go to properties, security (tab), add the users you want to deny to the "groups or users" area and click all the "deny" check boxes. This way only the users you specify will be disabled from using Internet Explorer, all users not denied will still have access.
  12. ...and why would you want to do this? More info would be so helpful!
  13. Right click on your tool bar at bottom of desktop, select "toolbars," check language bar.
  14. Try putting in your XP disc and do a search for *.msi files. Make sure system folders, subfolders and hidden folders are selected as well. MSI is a microsoft installer file and is usually housed in a system disk however I did find one once in my c:\windows\system32 folder.
  15. Do you have a connection regardless? If not try creating a new connection and see if that corrects your icon/connection issue.
  16. Hi, Give this a shot: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/s...february17.mspx
  17. When did this start happening and how? Have you swept your system for crudware (spy, ad, mal, dataminers) and run anti-virus. This looks like it might be the work of a nasty critter on your machine?
  18. Greetings all, I'm an administrator on a Windows Server 2000 professional network. Our users have restricted access using group policies. We recently re-installed XP on a PC and renamed it. This PC used to host a shared printer. Now restricted users that were once sharing that printer still have the old icon in there printer folder referencing the old PC name. When trying to delete it in their login it says "access denied" (of course) and when logging on as administrator it's not present. Any ideas how to delete this phantom? Edit: Please follow the rules! Topic title changed.
  19. Hi, We're about ready to throw one of our servers out the window. This problem started happening back in November. When a connection is attempted using PC Anywhere and we try and allow connection, a dialog box comes up indicating "do you want to stop current session?" When we say "yes" the program says "cannot stop current session." When we attempt going to the help section in the program it freezes up and we have to close the window to get back into it. When we go into task manager we can see the process running but we're unable to end it. Because of this running process we are unable to remove the program or re-install it. We're pretty sure this is a Symantec PC Anywhere 9.2 problem and not related to Windows Server 2000 Advanced. There were no major hardware or software changes to our servers when this problem first occurred. I'd appreciate any assistance anyone can offer. -Frustrated Techie
  20. What's the webpage? Is is something pertaining to microsoft or is it just a nasty pop-up? Interesting your getting a pop-up out of Outlook
  21. Try removing the cpu and powering up. You should get a POST beep. If it doesn't beep it's probably a board issue. If you get beep, reinstall CPU and if the same thing happens I'd guess it's either your multiplier, mhz settings, or CPU is bad on not compatible with your board. Find out what the exact jumper settings are for that CPU and set manually on board.
  22. Hi, I'd get your OS disk, boot to cd, try and repair your existing OS.
  23. Check to see if you have advanced controls under "options" in your volume control panel. There's a view option you can check to have it included on your volume control panel. Once on your panel, uncheck mute box and adjust your levels. For some reason the windows doesn't have it in default view and it mutes it as well.
  24. Hi, The device is a Standard TVM 450” agile modulator. It only has coaxial in and out. This dealy bob allows you to assign a signal to a specified channel. We want to pump a autorun powerpoint presentation to a channel on a TV using coaxial cable in the employee breakroom. I just found out that we don't need any sound. So I could connect a converter to coaxial out of the PC video card either using RCA video or S-Video.
  25. Greetings all, I'm trying to figure out the best (economical & effecient) way to send a computer video/sound signal to a television using the coaxial input on the TV. The connection needs to be coaxial input on TV because we are using a TVM agile modulator so we can specify media from PC to a specific TV channel. Getting video only I don't think is much of a problem, It gets tricky trying to add sound though. We could live without the sound. I was thinking if we went video only, getting a video card for PC with a rca (composite) video output and then using a rca to coaxial adapter plug. Sound alright? Any ideas? Thanks
