  1. I have tried this myself two days ago. It works, but I prefer the XP boot files which I'm using now. I have an AMD X2 4200+, and Windows 2000 is set up as "ACPI Multiprocessor PC". This causes the system to boot a little slower, and sometimes I still get the white loading bar on the black background. In my experience, if I get the white loading bar, it stays longer when using the 2K3 boot files; the rest of the boot up process is a little bit slower as well.
  2. Hey TommyP... Very nice idea, but... I just noticed a bad thing... I have two installations of Windows 2000 running side by side. The one on the first partition is an installation of Win2K with SP4 slipstreamed; IE6, DX9, .NET and the hotfixes were installed manually. The other partition holds an HFSLIPped installation (Win2K SP4 + IE6SP1 + DX9 + all hotfixes + Reader 7.0.5 + JRE 1.5.0_5 + .NET). On both installations, I have manually installed the mega codec pack using the default settings; I've only changed some file associations at the end of the installation process (.avi, .MPEG and .wma were not associated with Media Player Classic). Now... In the Administrator account, everything is fine. However, in the Power User account, playback of .mp3 files (WAV files seem fine and I haven't tried other formats yet) is degraded when playing with WMP 6.4 (haven't tried other players yet). Every 10 seconds or so, the audio "skips forward" by about two to three seconds. Uninstalling the mega codec pack fixes the above problem on both installations. As far as I can remember, this doesn't happen with the light codec pack, which was installed up until a few days ago (I now use a different hard drive containing two fresh installations of Windows). I'm now going to test this light version again to verify my words. If everything is still fine after that, I'd like to propose to make this "codec slipstreaming" accept the following: - light codec pack - Quicktime Alternative - Real Alternative (I don't know about Real Alternative, but the Quicktime Alternative has more recent QT codecs than those contained in the mega pack.) The second suggestion is a possibility to install Media Player Classic while keeping WMP 6.4 (mplayer2.exe) intact.
  3. Hey there... been a while... B) I was wondering if HFSLIP removes a file called "mscoree.dll". What is it a part of?
  4. Well... I've never experienced this problem before and I've been using IE6 on Win2K ever since I can remember... I'm not using your files. I'm not using IE for my day-to-day browsing but I'm a web designer so I need IE too. I design to standards so only IE6 is of use to me. I have to have it.
  5. I'm using an HFSLIPPED version of Win2K Pro English as my main system now, and am experiencing the following three problems which I've never had before (with a slipstreamed Win2K Pro SP4, manually updated)... 1) In both the Administrator account and the Power User account, when I go to "Save for web" in Photoshop 7, I get the window with the title bar but there's nothing displayed in the window (all gray). Only after a couple of seconds does the content of the Save for web window show. When closing that window later on, every item in it is removed one by one and then (after about 5 seconds) the window closes. 2) In the Power User account, I have my desktop in a different place on a different hard drive. Whenever I want to save a document and click the Desktop icon in the Places Bar, it takes two seconds before the Save As dialog switches to the Desktop folder. Other folders (places) are fine. 3) I'm trying out Skype for the first time. I've installed two different versions so far (the latest and one I got from a friend). In the Administrator account, when I scroll up or down that scrollable area, both versions of Skype freeze and use 100% of the CPU resources.
  6. Flash Player 7 full for IE (flashplayer7_winax.exe) Wait till the browser scrolled down to the section "How do I download Macromedia Flash Player?", then click on "Flash Player for Internet Explorer".
  7. No... The SP4 version only...
  8. I just made a CD for Win2K Pro Dutch and the problem is still there. The file in use is version 5.0.3900.7009, which is the one from the Update Rollup. I'll put the SP4 version of webvw.dll in to see if that fixes it.
  9. Not sure I understand this correctly, but I should've been clearer (and done some more testing). This is what I know:Win2K Pro English without WMP9 --> no need for Q828026 Win2K Pro French with WMP9 --> Q828026 needed Win2K Pro Dutch with WMP9 --> Q828026 needed If WMP9 is really involved in this, then why are MS saying that the fix applies to all versions of WMP starting with 6.4? And if it really applies to WMP 6.4 too, then why am I not offered this hotfix for "Win2K Pro English without WMP9"? That's why I thought it was related to the language version of Windows...
  10. I've figured it out... I think. I've been using version 5.6.0.6626 of scripten.exe, so I've downloaded it again from the link on the instructions page. That got me version 5.6.0.8825. Will see if this works out better... Edit: It does...
  11. Thanks, jpascal. I missed that line in Pene's post. I may have created an ISO image off the wrong SOURCESS folder. I started suspecting something when none of the registry tweaks had been executed, and "zPOST.exe" (which holds the registry tweaks) was nowhere to be found on the CD nor in the ISO. It's there in the SOURCESS folder, though. Now that we're talking about "English versions of updates", I could maybe tell you that the French and Dutch versions require this additional update: Q828026. I'm only mentioning this in case it's caused by an error in your script. That's strange. I didn't put anything in the FIX folder for neither version of Windows 2000 I tested with, yet Windows Update only complained about a missing Rollup for the English version...
  12. Don't know if this is relevant, but the TEMP folder didn't get deleted after the slipstreaming.
  13. 050821-- Win2K Pro English + SP4 + IE6 + DX9 + hotfixes + LegitCheck... Windows Update claims I need the following critical updates: - MS02-009 - MS03-008 (KB814078) - KB891861 (this is expected since I didn't apply the fix; I didn't have to do this for non-English versions of 2K so I thought you stopped fixing the SCSI problems) MBSA 2.0 confirms the above. Windows Update further offers "Visual Basic Scripting support" in the Recommended section, claiming that I need it to use Windows Update.....
  14. I figured that, but, according to your guidelines, this problem should be fixed later on in the setup process. The second try right after the reboot and the third at the end of installation failed, though. I think the installation program "lost" the CD; it didn't even spin. I should've tested that by adding all the languages in but I forgot, and now I'm running out of time. I need to get this computer workable again because my clients are getting impatient (web design)...
  15. Win2K + DX9 + IE6 from DOS is "questionable". Setup continues, but mpeg2data.ax "cannot be found" -- not even after the reboot. I think this is because these bootdisks assign a fixed drive letter to the optical drives whereas Windows setup uses the next drive letter available. During the initial DOS portion of setup, the drive I'm installing from is "R:" but after the reboot (non-DOS) it's drive "E:". During the last portion of setup, I'm told via an error dialog that mpeg2data.ax could not be found in WINNT\blahblah. After that, another error message showed... Title: Windows - Driver Entry Point Not Found Description: The \SystemRoot\system32\drivers\MSKSSRV.sys device driver could not locate the entry point KsCacheMedium in driver ks.sys. Using HFSLIP, I've had the latter error dialog twice before (today and about a week ago), although it then happened right after installing the drivers for my SoundBlaster Live 5.1 card. Note that I never had this error before I started using HFSLIP, and that it only happened with an HFSLIPped Windows 2000 Pro English; the Dutch and French versions seemed to be clean. I've never mentioned this before because I haven't been able to figure out the cause.
  16. That "left section" is part of the reason I find 2000 to be the prettiest OS ever made... XP Classic doesn't even come near it... Win2K + IE6 = working fine from DOS.
  17. HFSLIP 50821 with Win2K Pro English and DX9 from DOS (past fixing the problem with "banana.ani")... * couldn't copy "mpeg2data.ax" * after reboot, the following message displayed (sentence structure from a 5-year-old left untouched): "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"
  18. @ FDV: I'll bite... @ TommyP: I'll give it a try because I like the project, but I won't be using it for real. Think about it... If a hotfix is not important (KB894320), then why bother updating the Windows CD at all?
  19. *** EDITED *** I've compared the registry for Outlook Express entries on the 2K Dutch and 2K French installations, and made a reg file with fixes. This made Windows Update happy (and me too ) Edit #2: less registry fixes are required. oe_2kfr_fix.txt
  20. It comes with the job. I live in Flanders, which isn't that large and is pretty close to the French-speaking part of Belgium (where I delivered computers before) and Germany (where I got some relatives and friends). I have Win2K Pro in English, Dutch and French; the whole 2K Server line (3) in English; and Windows XP Pro in English, Dutch, German and French. You just gotta have it -- if not to sell, then to troubleshoot (you need to know what you're doing when repairing a computer or a network setup). You know... it's entirely up to you but I'd still have my reservations about using a fully slipped non-English system. As I said before, I really believe it's not a problem with the file itself so it's normal I wonder "what else could be broken". I've been having errors on the Microsoft KB and/or Technet pages as well, sometimes requiring me to click away up to 20 or more error dialogs just to see a page.I don't know if this is coincidence or not, but the Update Rollup contains this file and you are also excluding two files from the same package. On the instructions page, you say that Windows Update is supposed to complain about a missing Update Rollup installation but I don't get that at all; ie, it's properly installed according to WU. Maybe something went wrong there... I share your opinion. I normally use WMP 6.4 and Media Player Classic. This is just for testing...
  21. Windows 2000 Pro French, hotfixes applied afterwards to overcome the problem with "Microsoft Windows Network"... WU claims I need Outlook Express 6 -- the full deal, not an update. Verifying the program by going to Help > About shows that I do have OE6 installed...
  22. I can confirm that the FRENCH version of Windows 2000 Pro has the same problem with "Microsoft Windows Network" when all hotfixes are slipped with HFSLIP. Screenshot on demand...
  23. @TommyP Thanks for the reply. About webvw.dll... I've tried the three versions I have, and the "broken" installation (partition 2) will only accept the original SP4 version. The installation that works (partition 1) has no problems with either of the three versions. I could be wrong, but to me this means that the file is OK but some of the components (on the broken installation) that are calling it are messed up... About WMP9... That's exactly what I had -- at least the "DisplayName" part as that's the thing I wanted to change. It works when I do this manually when Windows is completely installed, but it doesn't work during the setup. I used to have the registry changes for Adobe Reader execute right after Adobe Reader was installed, and the registry changes for the hotfixes right after the hotfixes were installed. All of these were ignored, so I decided to move all registry tweaks into one .REG file and wrap it in "zPOST.exe". As a result, the registry tweaks for Adobe Reader and the hotfixes finally get through, but not the one for WMP9. It's as if WMP9 is being installed after "zPOST.exe"... About MDAC... Thanks for the tip. I'll try that.
  24. Where can I edit the name with which Windows Media Player 9 is represented in Add/Remove Programs? I have a registry file inside "zPOST.exe". All registry tweaks are executed properly except the one for WMP9...
