You must be comparing with the older runtime version. The December package is identical to the original redistributable release, except that "directx redist.txt" is no longer part of it. However, I no longer have the installer of the original -- only the extracted content -- so it's possible that the newer version was made at a lower compression rate than the original. d3dxof.dll d3dxof.xpg

I don't like Firefox (for several reasons) and have been using Opera as my main web browser for quite a while now, but the main article in this thread is doing a disfavor to anyone. I support free choice, competition and discussions, but there's no need to provide incomplete, misleading and sometimes even false information to achieve your goal. As noted before, MSIE doesn't support XHTML 1.1 at all when properly coded (and then it's not even mentioned how it reacts to XHTML files with the .xhtml extension or with the optional <?xml?> tag in the code). As a web designer adhering to the W3C standards, this is no news to me. The author of the article has changed the description in his standards support section but he still doesn't seem to understand the figures in the browser support table of his source: "Ironically Internet Explorer supports changes to the XHTML 1.1 standard better than Firefox, 39% to 24%, even without fully supporting XHTML yet." He fails to mention that this is normal because there's much less to be corrected in the standards support of Firefox and Opera, which is actually a PLUS for Firefox and Opera. And the added note in the Spyware section is simply ridiculous. I also clean people's computers from spyware and adware, and I can safely conclude that having Windows XP with SP2, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, LavaSoft AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy and SpywareBlaster don't help much in stopping spyware from getting installed on the computer. Most of the time, these people don't even do anything until their system is completely unusable at which point I always advise them to let me reinstall the system (cleaning with Ewido, S&D, AdAware, MS Anti-Spyware, Kaspersky Anti-Virus and several removal tools if applicable is possible but the system will never regain the speed and smoothness it had before). Also, as noted before in another article, the list of bugs on Position Is Everything isn't valid anymore (the link to that list has been removed by now). I know this because I've been going through most of the sections on that site quite a while ago while contributing to the "Opera Omnibus" pages. And before anyone comes up with the same type of article for Opera with links to the Opera Omnibus: the remaining two bugs are fixed in Opera 9 Preview 1. Discussions based on actual, non-distorted facts --> OK. Spreading false or inaccurate information --> no way.

How are you trying to import them? .PST files are for Outlook so be sure to pick "Microsoft Outlook" from the list of programs in the Outlook Express Import window.

What do you mean by "support"? For playback/decoding or creation/encoding purposes? Playback is the most important thing. Being able to edit "codecked" videos with an editing application (I use Studio 9) would come in handy but it's not really a requirement.I first used QT & Real Alternative. Then I added 3ivX to play back MPEG4 files but found it to be dog slow at opening MPEG4 files and dog slow at closing them again. I don't know how they did it, but nothing beats the startup/closing speed of MPEG4 files with the KLite Mega codec pack. I used QT Alt, Real Alt & KLite Mega for a while but got fed up having two Media Player Classics so I ditched the standalone QT/Real Alts. For what it's worth, I got rid of the remaining "skipping issues" but it still needs further testing. I disabled AC3Filter completely, disabled MP3 Fraunhofer and disabled AC3 ffcHandler. I'm gonna try to narrow it down.

I didn't know this either until yesterday. I accidentally found this page: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;269238 Check the note below the first table. Don't take that note too literally, though. It says that WinHTTP5.dll is used for NT-based operating systems instead, but the page is old and Windows HTTP Services 5.0 has been discontinued per this page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/?url=/li..._start_page.asp (So stick with msxmlcab.exe )

Mainly for QT Alternative, Real Alternative, DivX, Ogg and MPEG4/M4V/M4A support.

[Attachment removed] Funny... Am I really the only one? I deleted the HFNETCHK program files, installed it again in a different location and ran the tool on both the installations of Windows I got. WUC3.TXT = partition 1 (Win2K SP4; not HFSLIPped) WUD1.TXT = partition 2 (Win2K SP4; HFSLIPped)

K... Thanks. By the way... I'm probably nitpicking but msxml4a.dll is for Win9x; it doesn't need to be copied into SOURCESS.

The registry is infested with it. The only difference from MSXML4 I could see is that the subkeys "HELP" aren't pointing anywhere (the ones for MSXML4 point to the system32 directory). An unrelated question... If I use the HFEXPERT\CODECS method for MSXML4 and replace msxml4.dll (4.20.9818.0) with the version from the KB887606 hotfix (4.20.9828.0), do I still need the two CAT files that come with the hotfix or would that only be necessary in the event Microsoft ever add MSXML4 onto the Windows Update site?

And that with just the info provided by Bugs Bunny. Now that's what I call a developer... -
I've observed several problems with the K-Lite Mega codec package. Some of these occur in the smaller packages as well but I need the big one. 1) Media Player Classic cannot play quite a few of the MPEG files that I've got. The video is not rendered, the audio sounds like garbage (you hear the real audio but it's mixed with loud "tchick tchuck" and propeller sounds), and the total time indicator shows a much larger value as if Media Player Classic really thinks it's playing an audio file. Also, the total time indicator constantly changes (40:57, 40:48, 40:53, etc.). I have compared codecs, bit rates and resolutions, but there's nothing consistent to be found there. 2) The beginning of MP3 files always sounds like garbage when played back under a Power User account. It's as if the first second is played back really fast. No problems in admin accounts. I haven't tried account types lower than "Power User". 3) MPEG video files, MP3 audio files and M4A audio files (probably other types too, but not WAV) often "skip a second or two" when played back under a Power User account. This can happen as often as every 2 seconds. Everything is fine in an account with administrative privileges. Workarounds... * Set DirectShow Audio Filters > AC3 to "AC3Filter 0.70b". This fixes problem #2, the garbage noise at the beginning of MP3 files in Power User accounts. * Untick the main ffdshow entry (ie, nuke ffdshow). This fixes problems #3; everything is played back fluently now on a Power User account. * There's no real fix for problem #1 other than not associating Media Player Classic with MPEG files. I want to use Windows Media Player 6.4 for MPEG, AVI and WMV files anyway so it's not that much of an issue. Edit: When removing ffdshow, the "skipping" can still occur but only very rarely and only on really big files. I'm still testing how this can be remedied.

Win2K lookalike shell replacement for Win2K & WinXP?
Tomcat76 replied to Tomcat76's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Thanks for the reply. I don't use Active Desktop, but the icons are really important; they have to be the ones from Win2K/ME. ROS Explorer... Looking at the screenshot, it's clear why it's still "a work in progress". It looks promising but it's not usable at this stage. If you must know: - missing "Start" button - no (visible) "My Computer" equivalent - uses its own icons - text in menus is misaligned with respect to the icons (too high) - there's extra space at the top of each Start Menu's submenu, containing a small button in the top right corner -
I've been searching around on the Internet to see what shell replacements are being offered. So far, though, I've only found fancy/gimmicky stuff with lots of bloat. I'd like to know if there's something "formal" that looks exactly like the shell that exist on Windows 2000 (including Desktop, toolbars and icons), and can be used on both Windows 2000 and Windows XP. "My Computer" must still exist as I don't like to use "Windows Explorer" or anything that looks like it. About the only improvements over the default Windows 2000 capabilities I'd consider is the clock enhancements (seconds, week number, etc.) that TClockEx offers, and an easier way of adding/removing the default Desktop icons (like on WinXP).

MS Base Smart Card HF / User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
Tomcat76 replied to Bugs Bunny's topic in HFSLIP
User Profile Hive Cleanup Service is now OK for Win2K if you're willing to put up with it being installed right after the first logon. This is taken care of by the silent installer so just place "UPHC_2K.exe" in HFSVPK. -

Bugs Bunny: Switchless installers go in HFSVPK... -
For a while now, I've been including msxml6.dll and msxml6r.dll in HFEXPERT\CODECS but how do I verify whether that properly installs MSXML6? Is there an online test page?

No offense to you, Oleg, but I personally don't like this "mini Flash" nor the CAB install. On quite a few machines, I've witnessed how Flash that was installed through the basic installer got UNINSTALLED when simply CLEARING IE'S CACHE. It's a PITA to install it again every time when the cache is cleared, so I will only use the full installer.

MS Base Smart Card HF / User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
Tomcat76 replied to Bugs Bunny's topic in HFSLIP
Hmm... It doesn't seem to work on Win2K. I wonder if it's because of something that's "unavailable" during setup of Windows 2000, or because I have too many updates in HFSVPK. It worked several times on WinXP, but then I didn't include all the extra programs I added the last two days so it can be either thing. -
The silent installer I made out of it is 891.5kb... @salating: If you're familiar with creating silent installers, then get the offline version of Flash 8 and use these switches/parameters to install it: /qb-! ALLUSERS=1 The tool I'm using to create silent installers is updated to support Flash 8 and to create the silent installer automatically.
-
Adobe Acrobat 7 works on Win2K. I got it to work with Flash 8. Give me another while to test again because I'm not sure whether I used the "public" offline installer or the "licensed" offline installer. As usual, you can get the public version of the full installer here: http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledg..._19166#download Wait till the page has jumped into position for the section "How do I download Macromedia Flash Player?". Then click the link for "Flash Player for Internet Explorer" below the subsection "Windows". This will redirect to the actual file, install_flash_player_active_x.msi (1.57MB).
-
I've found something that could help with the installation of Flash 8. I'll be back.
-
Please do a search on the forums; this has been covered a million times. You can use the silent installer by RyanVM and place it in HFSVPK: http://ryanvm.msfn.org/. I've been trying to do this too but it never worked. From the log file:Error 2103: Could not resolve path for shell folder 26

MS Base Smart Card HF / User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
Tomcat76 replied to Bugs Bunny's topic in HFSLIP
@Bugs Bunny: If you're still interested, download the MultiCompiler program again. I'm testing the Base Smart Card update in the latest version. @TommyP: It looks like we're talking next to each other... LOL I know quartz.dll is not in the Base Smart Card package (as I said before). Two facts: 1) HFNETCHK only complains about having the wrong version of quartz.dll if I include the Base Smart Card update into HFSLIP 2) When the Base Smart Card update is included in HFSLIP with a source of Windows 2000, HFSLIP embeds the INF intended for Windows XP It should be obvious what's going wrong. HFSLIP applies the Windows XP version of the Base Smart Card update into a Windows 2000 source. The Base Smart Card update, apparantly relying on the existance of quartz.dll, finds a different version of quartz.dll than expected: the XP version of the Base Smart Card update, integrated by HFSLIP, searches for the XP version of quartz.dll, but if only finds the Windows 2000 version. HFNETCHK merely passes on the error reported by the Base Smart Card update.
