If you have MSBATCH.INF file in the folder you are installing Windows 98 from you could make following changes to it: Modify the [install] section to include the following line: UpdateInis=Edit.Files And these lines at the end of MSBATCH.INF: [Edit.Files] %10%\system.ini,386Enh,,"MaxPhysPage=40000" %10%\system.ini,vcache,,"MaxFileCache=524288" This should get you past Windows 98 installation without having to boot to DOS to edit System.ini or without having to remove RAM modules to get past the "Not enough memory" error. You could also put some other stuff under the [Edit.Files] section... some examples: %10%\system.ini,386Enh,,"PagingDrive=C:" %10%\system.ini,386Enh,,"PagingFile=C:\PAGEFILE.SYS" %10%\system.ini,386Enh,,"MinPagingFileSize=1048576" %10%\system.ini,386Enh,,"MaxPagingFileSize=1048576" Forces Windows 98 to create a fixed 1Gt swapfile called PAGEFILE.SYS at the root of C-drive... might be useful when dualbooting with Windows 2000 or XP. %10%\system.ini,386Enh,,"ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" Forces Windows 98 to use up all physical RAM before switching to the slower swap file. %30%\msdos.sys,Options,,"Logo=0" Gets rid of the Windows 98 boot logo.

Case Three seems to make sense if you absolutely have to use completely unmodified Windows 98 install CD... however making a slightly modified install CD isn't too complicated and gives much nicer end result as you don't have to do anything you wouldn’t normally do during windows installation. Here is a rough step-by-step guide: 1) Copy the contents of your Windows 98 install CD to a folder in your HDD. (Let's use D:\98CD\ as an example.) 2) Extract the contents of BHDD31.ZIP to D:\98CD\Win98. (Extracting !read.me, _bighdd.inf, _install.bat and xxFiles.txt isn't necessary.) 3) Extract the boot sector from the original install CD using IsoBuster or UltraISO. 4) Burn the contents of D:\98CD\ to CD or CD-R with your favorite CD burning program. (Don't forget to make your CD bootable with the boot sector you just extracted!) 5) Partition and format the HDD with The Ranish Partition Manager. 6) Install Windows 98 from CD like you would normally do. 7) Get back to Win 9x and enjoy it! I installed Windows 98 on a computer that has 300GB HDD with a modified install CD-R earlier today and updated versions of ADVPACK.DLL, CVTAPLOG.EXE, DEFRAG.EXE, DSKMAINT.DLL, ESDI_506.PDR, FDISK.EXE, FORMAT.COM, SCANDISK.EXE, SCANDSKW.EXE, W95INF16.DLL and W95INF32.DLL were installed automatically during Windows installation and I didn't have to reboot to DOS prompt in middle of Windows installation.

Why would you go through all that when you can just put the extracted ESDI_506.PDR file to the folder where you are going to install Windows 98 from? I just did this and the updated ESDI_506.PDR file was copied to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS during normal Windows install without any unnecessary reboots or DOS diskettes...

Well, I tried ntdll.dll from XP SP2 and got blue screen of death on windows boot-up... any other ideas?

Instead of making another topic about trying to get certain games working on Windows 2000 I'm just going to use this one for my question... When trying to play Bionic Commando:Rearmed I'll get one of following errors: The procedure entry point RtlActivateActivationContextUnsafeFast could not be located in the dynamic link library ntdll.dll. or The procedure entry point CsrGetProcessId could not be located in the dynamic link library ntdll.dll. None of the "dll wrappers" seem to have anything to do with ntdll.dll and I haven't found any workaround yet... any ideas?

Well, it's easy to get most "XP only" software working on Windows 2000 by putting the .dlls and other files to the programs own folder like fdv said but newer games are usually impossible to get working on Windows 2000... Here is an example: I think this error message would say "The procedure entry point AddVectoredExceptionHandler could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL" in english. This game uses a kernel function that only exist in XP, 2003 and Vista: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms679274.aspx Personaly I like to use Windows 2000 as my OS but things like this forces me to use XP or server 2003 (at least for gaming)... I'd love to see a KernelEx project for Windows 2000... Windows 2000 with server 2003 kernel would be the best Windows OS ever!

I changed the TimeZone= parameter from "Finland" to "Mountain" and the Date/Time Properties Dialog box didn't show up... THANKS! My install is now completely unattended except for it asking for monitor.inf when booting to the desktop for the first time but this can be avoided by having your monitor turned off at this stage. Now I need to think of a way to install to install programs during OS-install... unfortunately I'm not very familiar with .inf files: Can someone show me an example of calling a .bat or .inf file from .inf file?

Importing this registry entry during installation seems to get rid of the logon screen when booting to the desktop for the first time: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net] "AutoLogon"=hex:00 About the Date and Time Properties Dialog Box: I tried OptionalComponents and NoPrompt2Boot with 0s and 1s... I didn't see any difference at all. Do these parameters actually do anything? I have already made a perfectly working unattended install DVD for Windows 2000/XP/2003 and I'm now trying to make one for 9x OSses. 1. Is it possible to it make so that when you boot your computer using CD/DVD made with cdshell/cdimage it wouldn't load that blue picture that says cdshell and would go directly to "press enter to boot from CD"? That picture load very slowly on some computers... 2. Is there any way that you can prevent having all filenames and folder IN ALL CAPS? Obiously not a problem but kind of annoying when browsing the CD/DVD after install...

Apparently it was a bad burn... I just made the DVD again with cdimage/cdshell combo yesterday and it worked perfectly allthough it was made in exact same way...

Question about Easyboot: Is there a way to change the "root of CD/DVD" directory from C:\EasyBoot\disk1 to something else?

I hate to create a new topic but since I cannot get CDShell to work on real world computers due to mysterious "boot error" that I describe here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=109750 Are there some good alternatives to CDShell? Following features are needed: - "Optimized iso" to save space and to be able to put more stuff in - Similar editable menu for OSses that needs you to press some button to show, so after starting an installation process it goes past the menu without user interaction so it is completely unattended after choosing partition and file system instead of just showing the menu... Following are preferable but not necassary: - Relatively easy to use - FREE All suggestions are welcome!

Well I made my AIO-DVD and everything worked perfectly when I tested it in VMware... but when I burned it on DVD and tried to use it in real computer this is the result: Error booting from CD/DVD drive. Press any key to reboot... (at bottom of screen) [(grey squares)..............] 808002F9 This error appears before the CDSHELL picture so all my perfectly working installs of various OSses are useless because you never can even start the installation process... Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas how to get around this? I have gotten this error on two diffirent computers so it's probably not related to DVD drive other hardware... both computers had CD/DVD drive as first boot device in bios if it matters. Any kind of help is welcome... thanks in advance!

I haven't found the server 2003 runonceex example yet but if I run this command: rundll32.exe iernonce.dll,RunOnceExProcess RunOnceEx is executed before the restart and problem should be solved? I'm "using" the IE that comes with it IE6SP1... I /integrated all hotfixes available... I'm pretty sure that "setting personal settings for internet explorer thingy" is there even if don't do anything to setup disc... Oh yeah using R2 SP2 if it matters...

When I try to use RunOnceEx method with server2003 it seems that it is skipped completely because there is this "setting personal settings for internet explorer" thingy that also runs when you are getting to desktop for first time, exactly at same time when RunOnceEx is supposed to run... Is this some "server" feature that can be disabled from winnt.sif or do I need to kickstart it or RunOnceEx earlier somehow, I remember doing something like that when installing IE6SP1 on Windows 2000 from SVCPACK... Using Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition and I'm going to use it at workstation. I don't use automatic tools like HFSLIP or nLite... any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I haven't noticed "Directories" removing anything else than useless DOCS, SUPPORT and VALUEADD directories on root of CD like it is supposed to... I tried exactly same .iso that hangs up in VMware in Microsoft Virtual PC and it didn't hang at all... maybe this is hang-up is related to VMware and not nLite? I don't have a extra real computer to try how it works in real world but it might work anyway... Older version of nLite worked for me anyway and I failed to reproduce the error couple of times on even newest version when trying to do it on purpose althought I eventually managed to do it again... This error seems to be extremely rare and it seem somewhat random like "extrabigmehdi" said and it is somewhat hard reproduce even on purpose... so it might not be worth it to waste lot energy to investigate it anyway... It is unlikely that I can invite you over to see VMware install to fail anyway... I _COULD_ upload the .iso somewhere if you are intrested but that would be kind of illegal... Personally I'm not going to waste any more time with this very rare and random error as I allready got around it unless you think it might be useful others...

@nuhi I'm actually having hard time to reproduce this error reliably now but I did two attemps: Firts I installed newest version of nLite Test 1: - Copied all files directly from XP install CD that has SP1 /integrated on it and used nLite on them (ONLY removed Outlook Express and Movie Maker) - Tested under VMware and it did not hang up at 9 min mark! Test 2: same as #1 except: - Since I had untouched XP SP1 setup files on my harddrive (diffirent folder than on test 1) I copied them to a new folder and run nLite on it and ONLY removed Outlook Express and Movie Maker and this time "directories" - Tested under VMware and it did hang up at 9 min mark! This was unnecassary since nLite has it own bootable CD maker but when I first encountered this error I didn't remember this function existed... after all it had been ages since I used nLite. - I never loaded "last session" on any of my tests - I have my BITS service on manual and it has not been started - Read-only attribute was greyed out on both test folders It seems that nLite version may not be cause of this problem...

Thanks for reply but this line: MP10Setup.exe /Q:A /C: "setup_wm.exe /Q /R:N /P:#e /DisallowSystemRestore /SetWMPAsDefault" didn't work... didn't get any messages but it did not install either... WMP is still version 8.00.00.4487...

I know this has been asked millions of times before but how do I install WMP silently? I have searched and tried most switches and methods I have found but result is one of these: I get the system restore message... OR: I get no installion errors or other messages but it is not installed either! Example: using this line on SVCPACK.INF: MP10Setup.exe /Q:A /C:"setup_wm.exe /DisallowSystemRestore /Q /R:N" They say this line SHOULD work but nothing happens for me... This is only thing wrong with my unattended installs for windows 2000 and XP and I have wasted two days testing varios switches and methods without any success... If it matters I'm using finnish version of both WMPs and windows OSes... Do NOT tell me to: -Use WMP11 as it does not work XP SP1 -Use XP SP2 -Use some silent installer that is made from english version of WMP for english version of windows Thanks in advance!
