  3. Thats a good point. I think that key was dumped from a completely fresh install of xp+sp1 - so it should be ok to use, ......maybe

  5. I was under the impresion xp setup could not be started under msdos. As far as i can rememeber winnt.exe and winnt32.exe will not start under dos. To install to an empty HD you need to boot from the xp cd with a copy of winnt.sif on your floppy. However this does not explain the presence of the switch "MsDosInitiated" so i may be wrong.
  6. Thanks Klaassh. Does it switch to the PAE supported version if you go above 4GB ? (not that most of us have to worry about thet )
  7. There is another issue to this. If you are using a cpu with HyperThreading, setup builds a different kernel than the default one. If you replace it using this method and you have a HyperThreading cpu your computer will not start on the reboot after the guirunonce section has customized the boot process. Please note that this is only a working theory based on the following. I have a unattended cd that uses this exact method to replace the kernel and have used it 100's of times. When I built my first PC with a HyperThreading cpu it refused to start after the above method had been done. After spending a few minutes checking I found the ntoskrnl to be different than the one I had modified. I did a few compares with "blind Compare" to confirm this and then removed the offending command from the boot.ini and it booted up fine. If anyone can offer any more info on this I would be grateful
  8. Im with Alanoll on this one. The gui is real easy to use and the bonus is cdimage makes smaller images when you have more then 1 copy of the same file on your disk. Best tool around for making images.
  9. This is something i am going to try as i like the idea, But i have one question for you. When is the HAL created? If it is in the stage that creates the two folders then this process is only good for the pc it is created on. If it is after that then all is well and it can be used for all pc's. Can anyone give any details on the HAL and when it it created as this is something i don't know much about.
  10. Hi all. The first working beta is here for you to try, I have tested it quite allot but there may still be some bugs hanging around. This program is designed to run after the desktop has started and will allow you to install all your favourite programs and registry tweaks via a .INF file or a .CMD file. It is fully customizable and even detects your install cd and 2nd cd if you have one via semaphore files. At the moment only the .inf method is implemented but adding the .cmd method will not take that long. The screen design and size is not yet final and any feedback on that is welcome. The config.ini file is commented to explain how things work. You can download it Here
  11. No it dosn't cmdlines.txt is executed after the 13 min section is done, well before the login routines.
  12. Webmedic hasn't posted in 12 days, im not sure if he has left us or is away on holliday.
  13. The only problem i can see with that is the HAL, Is it not created/set during the txt setup stage. If so then unless you are installing to the same exact harware (in which case u may as well use a full ghost image) you could run into problems. But you could use this method to copy all the files over to the hard disk and then start the install from the HD.
  14. Guys/Girls? I need a few small programs that install silently and don't mind being installed over and over again for testing purposes... Any suggestions ?
  15. With the fixes that ms havent said they update older releases, is there an issue with the earlier release making changes to the registy or other config files that would not be made if we just used the file in the later fix. just thinking alowed.
  16. I don't yet know if it will work using a computer with a bios that allows booting from a usb device, but i would think so. However the first problem i see you having with your floppy drive is the usb drivers, when you start windows from a floppy the setup is not going to be able to read the usb drive as there arent any drivers loaded. maybe they can be added at the f6 part of the install if you have them that is. let us know as this is one of my next projects, only i want to use a usb pendrive for the media.
  17. The config file is evolving all the time, but overall it will remain the same. The problem is - If you want to be able to set the name of your program If you want and you want to set the command line to install the program As well as the option to reboot after the program And which of the 3 defaults it falls into. Then for each program, you are going to need those 6 options. Then you must think about submenus, if you want a group heading like "Adobe" to group all those products together then you must name that heading. But if you just want to group a bunch of addons under photoshop then you just need a submenu option. I have thought about this and the way i figure it is, anyone who is capable of creating an unnatended setup cd should also have the ability to understand the layout of the config file. Latest Beta - Here At the moment it now looks like this. 18. On Your Hard disk you should have your unnatended project folder called "XPCD" or something like that. In that folder should be your "I386" and "$OEM$" folders amongst others. In the "I386" folder should be a file called bootfix.bin, if that file is missing then your cd will not show the "press any key to boot from the cd" message.
  19. Is the file bootfix.bin still present in your build folder, if not you should replace it.
  20. Thanks for the visual basic tips, i may use them if i decide to redo it using vb. Its a perlapp. what can i say
  21. You know, all the time i was answering this and examining your posts that is the key i was thinking we were talking about, even when i typed in the other key i thought it was this one.........DOH Anyway, glad you got it sorted.
  22. Here is the first beta of a program I am cobbling together. It's designed to be run after your install has finished and the desktop has started "properly". Its similar to a program written by Nephilim called "xpes" (I got the idea from his program) so credits to him for the idea. Although it is similar to "xpes" it goes much further and allows total customization of the programs, registry edits and menu options. It will create an inf or cmd file installation script that should install all your apps tweaks and other stuff completely unattended. It's currently only processing the menu and defaults and is in its early stages. IF anyone has any ideas, suggestions, comments or anything else then please shout up. I don't even have a name for it yet so ill take suggestions on that as well You can download it here
  23. The Guide above uses an earlier version of cdshell.
