  1. Dave-H Many thanks for taking your time to send this information. I'll put it to good use. Sopchoppy
  2. Dave-H Thanks for the reply. I have resolved the problem by borrowing a Linksys internet card and installing it on a temporary basis then downloading the required files over satellite. Microsoft will still scan the Windows 98 SE operating system and download and install the required security updates. That being said, I would appreciate any information that you can provide on getting auto-patcher to run. I can visualize that it would be a real time saver if I have to go through this again for any reason. Thanks very much for your response. I always appreciate help of any kind and many times I am albe to pass on what I learn to others. Thanks again
  3. I'm reinstalling Windows 98SE (clean install) and I've downloaded a lot of 98 updates from this site but I'm having difficulties installing them. I receive an error message indicating that the downloaded files are linked to ntdll.dll:NTShutdown System. I have installed ntdll.dll in the System, System32 and System32/Driver areas but evidently this is not the answer. Apparently, the installer is tied to XP and does not work on Win98. I also suspect this is the reason that AutoPatcher refuses to work. Is there any fix around this, or do I have to try to download all of the updates on the Win98 box. The issue with the Win98 box is that it has no network card and only connects by phone modem. I can surmise that it will take a long, long time to download all of the updates by telephone. If anyone can offer any assistance I would appreciate it.
  4. thydreamwalker - thanks for the response. I will check out IE6-SP1 and the connections. Sopchoppy
  5. Thank you for the quick responses. The elderly lady who I am attempting to get up and running has had Windows 95 and just primarily uses the e-mail segment of windows and internet explorer. I'm not too familiar with Linux, so consequently I can't really offer her any assistance in that area. I have run Linux from a CD and it would probably be something tht I would enjoy once I had the time to learn the OS. I will continue to offer her support. I'm installing Vista and Zone Alarm (both free versions) along with some Adware blocking software. I can't load her up with too much as she gets easily confused and overwhelmed. I appreciate your feedback and your quick responses.
  6. have just installed a new windows 98 SE operating system on a computer. I have attempted to run Auto Patcher but I continue to get the following error message followed by a freeze up and then the BSOD which means that I have to manually shut down the computer. The error message is as follows: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be terminated. Quit all programs, and then restart your computer. If the program consistently encounters problems, chick the START button, then select HELP, TROUBLESHOOTING AND "if you have trouble running MS DOS programs. It then tells you to right click on the program go to properties/advanced and check the prevent MS DOS recognition box aand attempt to run the program. If the same situation occurs, then go through the same process and UNCHECK the box. I have gone through both of those scenarios and I still get the error message. Can you help? I am running the Dec. 2007 Auto Patcher program. Thanks
  7. RetroOS - thanks for the reply. Yes, when I attempt to execute START_ME I get the error message. I will follow your advice and post my question on the site that you recommended. Thanks for the help. Sopchoppy

  9. I am preparing a computer for a retiree who is on a fixed low income. I have installed Windows 98 SE on the computer and I was wondering if there is a list of recommended required security updates available. This person will be using a dial-up modem so I'd like to get the updates installed before handing the computer off to her. Thanks for any help you can provide. John
