  1. agnitum outpost is not as pesky as zone alarm and does more.
  2. I dont rememebr saying naything about boot logo's specificly. I think I ment more that I would like to use the method gosh was refering to. But there is also a little app I use now that lets me change boot logos and login screens and it is free. I rather like it. It's something you use after you setup windows though and not as part of the install as gosh was suggesting.
  3. hm i have not tried the multiboot stuff yet. I'm waiting for a larger hard drive to show up (120gig sata maxtor for use on my si raid controler) at any rate I've only got a 10 gig in my system now that I'm running windows on another 10 gig that I'm doing this stuff on and it is prety much full with the virtual drive for virtual pc and all tha xp files and what not. When the new drive gets in I'll take a look at this stuff but for now I dont ahve the space. Well I could install vmware under linux and do that then the only windows I would have would be virtual. Hm not a bad idea. I may try it. At any rate I'll be able to help out on this thread in a few days.
  4. yes no kidding this is after a fresh clena install. I'm just testng little things now on my unatended install. The majority of it works but all of a sudden i was getting this and for the life of me I cant figure out were it's comming from. but the fix above fixes it so who realy cares.
  5. thanks that thing needs to be in the swiss army knife of windows fixes someplace. It is way to valiable as Ihad a system that would revert to that all the time even when I did nothing to turn it on.
  6. not really you aren't missing anything at all and you may want to look at this. http://unattended.sourceforge.net/ I think you will be pleasantly suprised.
  7. well there may be an unatended.txt in the i386 also make sure that is not there either. Other than that I would amke sure you get a new set of install files for your i386 off a known working and booting cd. Also one more thing I switched to useing nero a long time ago because of well problems. You may want to go that way also. something is just not right with some of those other tools and things dont work as expected.
  8. did you guys use barts multiboot for this or? something else. I think I need to start looking into this as for some reason my automated install no longer gives me the option to recover an existing windows instelation when you get to the hard drive part. So I'm thinking of having a plain vanilla instal on the dvd so if I need to recover and already existing install then I can do that too.
  9. thanks. So I can use that instead of turning of fast user switching? man what a pesky little setting that is.
  10. lol I'm not sure exactly waht you are asking but on my installs I have completely removed access to ie and have mozilla set as the default. it's quite a nice setup. and as soon as thunderbird and fiebird are ready for primetime I will use those instead. In my case there simply is no hint of ie anyplace. It is ther but wiht no buttons to click and with mozilla as the default it really does not matter.
  11. what files did you edit exactly?
  12. well here is a little trick i use to install them and the nforce audio controle panel. ECHO. ECHO Installing ATI Control Panel for Catalyst 3.6 ECHO Please wait... IF EXIST "%systemroot%\system32\ati2evxx.exe" start /wait %systemdrive%\drivers\ATI_cat3_7\cpanel\Setup.exe -s -f1"%systemdrive%\drivers\ATI_cat3_7\cpanel\setup.iss" ECHO. ECHO Installing Nforce Audio Controle Panel ECHO Please wait... IF EXIST "%systemroot%\system32\nvaudio.nvu" start /wait "RunDll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %systemdrive%\\drivers\\nforce\\nvautils.inf,DefaultInstall" ECHO. EXIT --EDIT-- and from my experiance if you use oempnpdriverpath the video card controle panel will install itself. so it is jsut the sound card part that needs the extra shove. doh this was my comment I did not mean to add it to yours. --EDIT--
  13. there is a major problem with adding hotfixes in the svcpack.inf. I know it's the proper way but after working with a microsft employee for a few weeks on this some other guys in another department told him that they were not really made for it and it will break things that is why I no longer work o nthe hotfix scripts I was doing and also why I just use cmdlines.txt to install everything now. There is nothing wrong with svcpackinf for the other things but cmdlines.txt is easier to use and since the hotfixes are broken I find no need to use svcpack.inf. You will find the last roll up is probably a direct result of the work we were doing when we found out how broke the hotfixes are. I hope this info helps you all as we found some major problems with it. I did however get some other goodies that work very well but the hotfixes will never slopstream and apply right and they cause other issues. For instance I hope you all are running a lejit copy of windows beacuse if you aren't in about 6 months to a year you are going to hate life. Well you will hate it if you love windows. This is going to be so bad. If you love windows you will go buy a copy but you will loose all your data on your hard drive. If you are borderline now you will go get linux.
  14. hm well it's a little different for me. I dont have any of the user problems you do. as all my registry tweeks are done very early on and apply to the default user profile which every user on the system is made from it works very well htat way but still the stupid fast user switching stuff is a pain. and in case after diableing fast user switching when I log off I only get the option to log off. Fast user switching is definatly not there and the screen saver also does not drop me back to the login screen for fast user switching so this worked great for me. One other thing if I ever need it and add other users I can just turn it back on.
  15. well ofr the most part they use barts eltorito multi boot setups.
  16. no I'm having no password issues. I have only one user and for some stupid reason when the screen saver comes on after you wake it up from the screen saver you are back tothe login window. All I have to do from there is click on the user so it's not really password protected. I would prefer to not have to do this though. It would be nice to jsut go back ot the desktop after the user stops the screensaver.
  17. no I didn't say that windows has it's place. but you forget I get to see the really slimmy part all the time. It's completely different if you have the machines locked down so the users cant do anything with them. I get to see all the home user stuff and the things they do. After all this is said like I said for me windows has it's place I dont use linux for everything. In the cases I mentioned it is a cost saving thing. that is very important to my customers and of course stibility or usability with linux is not an issue at all. I do have more windows installs then linux though. For myself I prefer linux yes but then i have been using it for years. Almost as long as windows.
  18. yea the stupid thing is I haven't added anything to the install that should do this but my install is doing this now and I dont like it. Thanks by the way.
  19. abybody know of a reg tweak to get rid of that stupid thing were if the screen saver turns on it doesn't log you off but shows you a login type apge and you have to click on your user again. I would prefer if the screensaver just came on. this may be nice if the system is multi user but mine is not.
  20. ah well that explains it I have done a guide on how to use 2 cd's but I also now use a dvd. I'm anly about 1/3 of hte dvd now so I have allot of extra room yet.
  21. Yes I currently have via, nforce, nvidia video, ati video, raid, and a few others in there and it works with all the motherboards I test with here. The only ones I have not added are intell because I dont really sell or use intell boards. It would be jsut as easy to add them though. When you do add them make shure you add them in the proper order in your pnpoemdriverpath you should have motherboard drivers first, then raid, then video, then anything else you want to add.
  22. hm interesting I have some links for do auto installs using linux as the install host. If i ever do that kind of thing I will most likely do it that way. I have tinkered wiht the idea a few times. The nice thing about hte linux solution is it works well and is free. I can save my local companies lots of money doing these kinds of things. I have one server for an office running windows doing file print and websharing/firewall services. Windows does not directly have anything comparable and if I did purchase jsut the windows server 2003 for them it would have been at least $1000 for the amount of clinets they have. and they still would have had to pay another $1500 or so for the server itself. By using linux on the server I was able to cut out at least $1000 worth of fat and that does not include the other software that would have been needed to do the connection sharing properly. The object is to find a good mix and let linux do most the server chores and use windows for the clients if need be. I have to admit though there is another company I work for that uses server 2000. It's just to buggy though I would not atempt to do any of the server stuff I do with anything less that server 2003 but I have not had the opertunity yet and since linux fills the spot for 99% of the things I have not found a reason to get it and try it out.
  23. Right I saw that. Hm I must have disabled the cursors in winnt.sif because I dont have them.
  24. well I'm a network admin on a smaller scale. I support local small business with network and system support but I also support allot of home users. I own a small computer store and for me as it is is for you is to make a pleasant system. To this end I do use a custom theme but it is an xp theme and not the classic one. It just looks much nicer. I also do a few things like adding my computer, network palces and my documents to the desktop. The way I see it I want this thing to be as comfortable for them as possible. I still get allot of users complaining about the looks of xp or this or that little thing so I want it to be pain free for them. To this end I disable allot of the security realted issues in xp but leave a few things like autoupdate turned on. This way it is much safer for the regular home user to work with. Hope that helps some.
  25. one more thing were did you get the 3d white cursors?
