  1. I bet he uses linux on a Apple GMac 5 lol -D-
  2. Well to monitor temperatures i use the following programs Everest Home Edition SpeedFan 4.24 and Motherboard Monitor 5.3.7.0 for us to determine an average on your temperatures we would need to know what processor you use, what motherboard, and what graphics card you are using, but download one of the above programs, and tell us the info we need, and we can help you determine a "Safe" temperature range -D-
  3. Alienware the best?! have you seen the price tags on those machines? they are literally marked up 400%, you configure a system from alienware, it costs 7k (well the system i want cost's 7k canadian currency, without S&H), and for that price you could probably build 2 of the exact same thing and still have enough left for a half decent midrange system. your mainly paying for the 20minutes they spend testing your system to make sure it's rock solid and the overhyped case it comes in, you could test your system in about a day and if something is wrong RMA the faulty piece, alienware requires you to send the whole system out IIRC. (whoops didnt see that you also put in a word for building your own, heh )
  4. Gotta be built on your own definately,. companies like Dell, HP and all the other major computer manufacturers sometimes markup machines up to 200% of the same price it would cost you to build it yourself. plus many major manufacturers don't give you "exactally" what you want or need. -D-
  5. This seems to be a bit of a hit or miss problem on OEM discs used to nlite, I managed to get myself a retail copy of WinXP PRO and nlite'd it lastnight and the only problem I have is the setup hangs after the first reboot at the "Please Wait" screen, but back to the topic at hand. Before I got a Retail version of windows xp I was using an OEM cd and having the same problems, but some of my buddy's to whom i recommended nlite, tweaked they're disc with it using an OEM XP cd and they had no problems at all so it has to be something within the OEM cd giving troubles, I remember it was stated in one post awhile back that the OEM cd's use slightly different .inf files and nlite uses those to adjust your disc accordingly but when it does some things will not match up as they should causing the problems it seems that many of us have. i have found some temporary fixes but they do not fix everything, use ACDzip to replace the files into your driver.cab file that are missing before making the iso and it will fix some problems (credit goes to user "Power350" for pointing out that ACDzip can add the files ) but don't forget this is only a temporary fix, even after replacing the files into the driver.cab file you might come across more things not working correctly. -D-
  6. If you plan on using Nlite to tweak then yes there are some differences but those differences are luck of the draw, I myself would say to always try to get Retail as OEM have quite a few hidden problems in them when you use nlite, mainly files missing from the DRIVER.CAB file but then again it is still luck of the draw, many people on this board and quite a few of my friends that i recommended nlite to, use OEM cd's to nlite and a small number of those people using OEM cd's including myself have a whole hoarde of problems when tweaking an install. if your just going to purchase it for an install and no major tweaking then OEM would be best as it is usually cheaper,... just my .02cents ~D~
  7. Well I "could" suggest some fixes,... if you "didn't" block out everything in your process manager except for explorer.exe, make sure when you've got troubles with cpu usage that people can see "ALL" the running processes in a screenshot,.. post a screenshot that shows all the processes instead and I should be able to help ~D~
  8. Are you running Folding@Home, SETI or any other of the likings? I noticed that sometimes when I am running Folding@Home it likes to make any fullscreen game minimize to the desktop, but when i pause or quit folding temporarily until I'm done playing it doesn't crash to the desktop, but this is a once in a blue moon thing, it doesn't do this to me very often, But if you are runnning anything of the likes maybe try my solution -D-
  9. My suggestion is roll back your driver's to 4.12's or else try Omega's Drivers for your card cause you shouldn't have problems with doom 3, i play it fine using Cat's 5.3 on my main pc,.. which is a big drop down from your pc's specs along with me using a very crippled version of your card. you shouldn't be lagging at all with those spec's, also scan for spyware with ad-aware SE and spybot, but get back to us after you roll back the driver's and or switch to omega's drivers and do a scan for spyware. then we can get onto other possible solutions such as a reformat and checking memory and cpu for errors D
  10. the prefetch folder is found at "C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch" without quotations, C being wherever you installed windows.
  11. i too am running xp on a pIII 500 with 256 of ram a 40Gig partitioned 4 times and a 8Mb Matrox AGP card and it runs great, i used a nlited XP and tweaked it using black viper's page. got it running 18 processes and using only 67.8Mb of ram, but you may want to put at least two partitions on your drive one for your OS and one dedicated to just a swap file. here is how i am running mine (Partition 1 -5200Mb= C:\Win98SE, Partition 2 -5200Mb= D:\WinXP, Partition3 -2500Mb=E:\SWAP, Partition 4 27xxxMB= F:\Stuff) i decided to run dual boot to mess around with it and i can say the system runs great, i play qauke III on it all the time when i'm not on my Main PC and i've seen XP that isnt nlited run flawlessly on a Pentium 233 with 320Mb of ram, only problem was it was a long slow process actually getting into your logon fully loaded up and ready to go, but after that it worked great, but it (XP) runs awesome on anything faster then a 233 with (my minimum requirement-->) 256 of Ram but you can run it on 128 since it says so itself, but my suggestion is definatly nlite it and viper it. ~D~
  12. True, but the arguement about p2p programs is it takes the MPAA or w/e the people that rally against the usage a little longer to find the source and it costs them more money since there are multiple sources with p2p if they nip the source at the bud with less of they're (tax payer's) money spent they are happy, a http or ftp is run by a single server usually and much easier to track where the upload came from in the begining, and also by slowing the connection you'll recieve to the server it gives your ISP time needed to track such activities and keep logs of your ip and the sources' ip to report to proper authorities if needed, certain ISP's are even being pushed into sending e-mails they're users warning them if they notice suspiscious activities and or downloads, and HTTPS secure servers would be even better because users are usually required to log on which requires the server to place a cookie in the purpotrator's (<---spelling??) machine which further allows preventive action to be taken if the evidence is brought to court. basically they want to shut all p2p programs down to save(themselves) money in the long run for many reasons, i think they figure that if it is legal then it shouldnt be distributed with p2p programs, but my first post in this thread states that there are a few good reasons to keep p2p programs,.. lol i know i've probably made myself sound like a hyprocrite but that isnt true i myself still use p2p programs but i only pull stuff with them that i can get legally off the net with no strings . now this is my own assumption here but i have to slightly lean towards it,.. 38% of the people that used p2p programs when they first came out and at least 50% of people that used kazaa or morpheus did not use them for legal material that didnt have a EULA i mean back in '99 before i learned about all this and found out how damaging it is to the music/movie and application econmy to download something you didnt purchase i broadend my horizons with music and lots of it but also if you think about it isnt that same econmy damaged by the very internet radio some of us listen to with winamp or what not? and the fact that there are certain busineses that rent out games,..what person is going to buy a game they rented enough times to beat and then found out they didnt like the ending or whatever even though depending on the cost of renting and the ammount of times rented it might be cheaper to buy it but i mean if you heard (for example) Complicated by Avril Lavigne (dont bash me, its the first thing i could think of) over and over on the radio, be it internet or not and you got sick of the song,...would you go out and buy the cd? i think not. or played too much of GTAIII i for one heard too much of 50Cent's song Candy Shop on my local radio station here that i don't even want to bother buying the cd just cause i liked the song at the time, and i played GTA III so much that it has lost it's interest and am wishing i had just rented it enough times to beat it instead of purchasing it.. hmm i've apparently rambled on too long so i'll cut this short, no matter what the MPAA/RIAA and software company's do the econmy is already damaged by many other factors. Whew! long post ~D~
  13. p2p applications are great for picking up live linux distro's, quite a few of the older dos based games that were released to abandonia are completly free and no EULA anymore so those can be picked up on p2p, also who said non illicit pictures infringe on copyrights? (dunno if i'm catchin the right drift from your post ) there are still plenty of people on dialup that can not stay connected long enough to pull a 600Mb linux distro off the net without losing it half or a quarter way through, in fact when i was still on dialup i used a p2p program to get my knoppix cd since i couldnt stay connected longer then 1 hour at a time before i dropped, and for office use p2p programs work great to save bandwidth and distribute tommorows speech to everyone (that one would only apply on a ISP that charged insane rates for going over bandwidth limits) dunno if my post contains what your looking for though. ~D~
