  1. I use a modified script that a fellow from France posted a while ago. It allows remapping of any drive but you can extract the optical drive handling out of it and modify to suit. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=18087
  2. With svcpack.inf at T-13 of UA install. [setupHotfixesToRun] KB873339.exe /Q /O /N /Z KB885222.exe /Q /O /N /Z ... more updates... KB912919.exe /Q /O /N /Z KB913446.exe /Q /O /N /Z QChain.exe
  3. I thought as much, thanks for the confirmation, Takeshi. I was hoping to find a way to prevent them from being left behind but brute force works too.
  4. Every time that I use my UA installation I find several directories similar to the two below, at random partitions. They seem to be caused by the SVCPack updates. I cannot delete these directories, the files are locked by the system, and they are becoming a pain to look at. I like to find a way to remove them without using brute force, or even prevent them from being created in the first place. Does anyone have an idea as to why they appear or can nudge me in the right direction to prevent them from appearing when I reinstall? E:\0a3a0735a1d330754d6447\update\cstupd1394sidspeed.dll E:\0b64587d0c7e413814b4f622\update\updspapi.dll I get nothing like that when I update from the Microsoft site, by the way.
  5. Got the Deluxe version of this board two days ago and I've had no issues with it so far. I haven't finished putting it through its paces yet, but so far I'm pleased with what I got.
  6. Today's applications were written for XP. As you pointed out, Vista has increased demands for resources so in my mind, and although it will run those applications, it won't do a better job than XP does. Tomorrow's applications are another thing. Written for Vista, they will undoubtedly have demands that XP cannot meet. Since I am not going to spend a couple of thousand of dollars upgrading my apps to Vista any time soon, I plan to use XP for my main OS for another couple of years or until I aquire software that demands Vista. Vista will be a plaything like Linux is to me now, just the means to learn and experiment. Your mileage may vary.
  7. I use the following in the winnt.sif: [unattended] ProgramFilesDir=\Programs CommonProgramFilesDir=\Programs\Common [GuiUnattended] ProfilesDir="%SystemDrive%\Settings" I haven't actually changed the drive but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to.
  8. 1680 x 1050 on 20" LCD as well as a 15.4" laptop.
  9. I don't believe that this is correct. I have YES for vmware installs and NO for for the final CD burn. I forgot to change it ti NO once (before I automated the whole thing with a batch) and I ended up destroying my first drive's partitions.
  10. Definately recommend it. Bought the very same with lifetime warranty. With that kind of warranty, who cares if it's O/C'd?
  11. I don't know of a list per se, but here's a couple paths that I use: %AllUsersProfile% = %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\All Users %UserProfile% = %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\%UserName% The deeper paths can be extrapolated for the above.
  12. After creating my unattended image I like to have the option to burn it automatically from batch file. I have many Google hits but hard to choose from. Does anyone have direct experience or favourite program that they would recommend? Must be able to accept command-line input and be free. Thanks in advance for any assistance.
  13. Sounds like Shindo_Hikaru knows what he's talking about. I'm clueless about coax cabling myself, but I do know that when I spliced a piece of ordinary coax cable for extra length, the satellite signal quality degraded. The tech that I called replaced it and all's well now.
  14. Well, we can blame Microsoft, the Masons, Global warming and whatever else suits your fancy as to why the world isn't running the way that it should. Companies like AIG won't write software for Linux, and that's because of MS' lies? Well, they won't write for Mac either. Why should they? They write for the mainstream. If and when Linux becomes mainstream, customers will demand such. What do you expect? A company to write software for a platform that is as good as dead for them just to spite Microsoft? Business doesn't run that way, nothing happens unless there is a benefit. I have broken my own rules as well as the forum's carrying out this conversation which serves no purpose, so I'll leave you with this: Go ahead and be a crusader looking under your bed every night for spies if it fulfills your life, but you'll only likely to find a few dust bunnies. 6
  15. Because Linux won't run business applications. The world runs on business applications, not games and not on Linux desktop distros. When you can run software like the insurance-related AIG or LifeGuide on Linux, maybe business owners will listen to you. Until then, stick with the conspiracy theories. Vista is a bit of a disappointment to me, too. But until I see the final product I'm not going to dish it. If I don't like it, I won't buy it. You're allowed to do that, you know. But I bet that regardless of whatever it may end up being, within two years of release it will be the mainstream OS. You can stay with Linux or keep up with the demands of the industry. (Not dishing Linux, I have a dedicated box with it, but I'm under no illusion as to which OS is more useful in putting food on the table. Linux is a hobby.)
  16. DigeratiPrime i cot not have said it better myself the way microsoft run there business i am thinking buying OSX Tiger next time to. in the first place Microsoft has never made anything self accept ads for there expensive products they buy everything from other companys. Microsoft look like a outsourceing gangster cartel that is protected by a Judicial System with a criminal national security policy in full action. the ugly truth is that microsoft is not a private company but US goverment front that only have one interest spying on every person that has a pc and force them to use windows. by the way the internet was created by the NSA and Microsoft together with only one purposes in mind spying one every person on the planet that has a pc . If this post is getting me banned from your forum so be it is time someone tells the truth about Microsoft and it`s Gangster boss mr Al Capone Jr aka Sire William Gates III. http://www.msboycott.com Come on, tell us what you really* think! Not an impossible scenario, but a little (a lot?) far-fetched. I'm certain that if such collusion was in the works you wouldn't know about it anyway.
  17. I think, as the topic implies, that the point is to show beginners how to create a driver pack based on their own system drivers. Nice idea, in fact.
  18. A while ago I found this thread. The objective of the script is different, but in it you'll find references to what you're asking. The script works well and it's well documented, you'll just have to dedicate some time to it to discover how it works. I used parts of it to identify built-in removable drives (mem slots) and remove them because they were interfering with my unattended installation. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=18087
  19. Yes he did! Unless he can verify that video signal is* present by hooking up another monitor, I'd say that the mobo is suspect. If another monitor works, then check the actual plug on the monitor that doesn't. it could be a connectivity issue. Good luck.
  20. I'm fairly certain that F6 at least is hard-coded. I was trying to remove the option myself a few months ago, and I looked everywhere for an answer to no avail.
  21. I like to use this on my programs disk. As such, I would need it to be able to read its .ini file from the same directory the executable resides in, so that I can take it anywhere. Is this possible?
  22. Strange thing, I can't get it to launch. I get Runtime error 53, file not found. The dialog box name is 'prjPIE'. Is this the filename it's looking for?
  23. Not to sound cynical or anything, but when it comes to reviews and rankings one must take everything with a grain of salt. Make that a few grains of salt, considering the contributions and gifts that exchange hands. The only thing I respect when it comes to that, is other users' opinions. That's with any industry by the way. Even if the review is free of manipulation, one must consider the test conditions. All a review can claim, is that under *these* particular conditions, brand A scored this, and brand B scored that. More conditions and the test becomes even more dependent on those conditions. I went through all this BS when I was researching laptops a few weeks ago. More than half the time, consumer comments were at odds with reviews. The bottom line is, real-life opinions and comments are far more valuable than "official" product reviews. For me, anyway.
  24. I second that! Nice topic! Good thing I'm clairvoyant. You're missing the bootfix.bin file in your i386 folder. Put that in, in the UA install disk, and you'll get the 'Press Key' prompt.
  25. Too many comments to reply to individually, I will try to address them indirectly. I have been a member of this community for a year now, and I have made about 60 posts. 40 of them in the last month. Until now, I was busy learning some of the things that other people volunteer. I hadn't even been ready to ask meaningful questions. Yet, there were time that I wanted to, but refrained from doing so wondering whether the answer might be hidden somewhere and someone took an issue with my failure of finding it. This isn't just me. I have seen this over and over in these forums. I want to make this clear. I appreciate the fact that other people donate their time and knowledge in any technical forum and they aren't obligated to help anyone. However, when just starting out and are bombarded by different concepts, one needs direction more than answers, preferably from members of the same community. You advanced users think that techniques learned over the years can be learned overnight. When you have a good grasp of many technical issues, you can make connections and come up with your own answers. Someone new to all this can't, and when they dare ask the question, they are all lazy. Then, there are those who post answers to amaze others with their knowledge. The fact that the answers may be beyond someone's understanding is of no importance. Then, when the person needing help asks for clarification, again they are accused of lazyness. It's a catch-22 situation. **** if you do and damned if you don't. I guess it boils down to the reason why people post. It is to help others, or to flaunt their knowledge? An answer that doesn't help the person asking the question is useless, no matter how "smart" it is or what is the poster's motive behind it. Yes, you can suggest alternatives to a poster's question, but what good is AutoIT or WPI when the person has no grasp of RunOnceEx? What good is RunOnceEx when the person doesn't know command line syntax? I am not suggesting that you should take someone by the hand and mentor him, but you can at least tell them that to get to C, one must go through B first and what they must learn to accomplish it. Yes, there are those who ARE habitually lazy and want their hands held. I've seen them too. But it's a peculiar thing. When someone does ask a redundant question, I see a bunch of replies putting them down and at he same time posting links to the articles themselves. They hand them the question anyway but want exact their toll on them. It's like, "Here's the answer, but I resent giving it to you so I'll take a strip of your hide in exchange." In essence, you, yourselves condition them to act they way they do instead of ignoring them completely to discourage their behaviour. A habitually lazy person doesn't think twice about posting, knowing that the answer will come up anyway, and they'll just ignore the flak that comes with it. Alright, this is turning into a rant and I'll stop. I just want to say that not everyone asking a question is lazy, even if it's a redundant question. After all, isn't this a community? Hey, I am not trying to change the world, in fact I don't expect any of this to be taken seriously. No one likes to be on the defensive. Just like the newcomers get defensive and clamp up when they are called lazy, so do the advanced users act accordingly when someone critisizes their own behaviour.
