It looks lie your user desktop. So I would try to replace it from and admin account by going in and moving all of the files out then deleting the folder then remaking it. Then you could logon and copy some of the files back and recheck them. See what happens after you put each in.

I have a system like this. I should warn you Asus doesn't have the best drivers for 64 bit yet. I had to scrap my windows 64 bit test and go back to old 32 bit. Things might change by May hopefully.
Go back into safe mode and use msconfig to deselect all startup items. Also while in safe mode run a scan disk. You might also be able to use system restore.
If you have ntfs on your windows xp home hp do you show your options for permisisopns. The check box for simple file permissions is not there. Is there anythign that can be done? This must be pretty rare beacuse, ntfs is usally not used at home with home.
If it's not a virus or spyaware try a hard ie repair then redo the updates. I see ypu have sp2. Did you do that u[date your self. If yes pull it out do a reapair then put it back in.
What happens when you use ie? Firefox might have some tweaks for you. When you talk about slow. Do you think it's slow to launch each site or slow to load all page? Have you done a ping or trace route?
