Sounds exactly my problem. I really tried enjoy using win10 as main os but kept having issues constantly. I do not want os force updates tom. I do not want worry every system update breaking apps or drivers. I got few laptops that are unable run win10 properly anymore due drivers. Also win10 is mess on changing settings. On windows 7 I had control panel (basic settings) and Group policy editor (advanced windows/app settings). Win10 got two control panel and need change between them and whole UI feels like touch screen, it got ads. I downgraded windows 7 and never looked back again

I have desired run windows 7 as long as can which is quite long considering even windows 95 is somewhat usable today with some tweaking despite being over 25 years old. I use firefox esr version since will likely recieve updates longer than rapid release. I got linux mint on dualboot with it. Nothing wrong on using windows 7 or older. You do not need always get "the latest and greatest" os. And windows 7 is useful still atleast on me. I got windows 10 on non networked vm for some purposes so no need dualboot or restore image

For security side of things most sayings about viruses will flood win7 system are FUD. I am not saying it is risk free but viruses wont just attack since todays security is made on network level. Back in XP days ADSL/ISDN/Dialup operators gave every computer public IP address. That increased risk of attack by lot and I have gotten lot of worms. Nowadays you many times wont even get one public IP (behind operator level NAT many times) and generally you are behind router firewall and NAT. You just need good network firewall between your local area network and internet. Most modern routers got sufficent ones and something like openwrt or pfsense will improve it a lot. Also disable router remote management, disable UPNP, disable VPS for wifi and change wifi and admin panel passwords and you are good to go. I also got pihole that got constantly updating blacklist of malicious domains.

And for browser security I use firefox with ublock origin and noscript. Noscript saved me many times from attacks. If want harden on os level I would use Comodo antivirus HIPS feature or OSarmor (only if you know or want learn how setup process rules). Also keep backup of important files on external hdd. Then most important part of security is use of common sense. No av or update will protect from end user mistakes always.

All that being said, if you want keep windows 7 go ahead and keep it. You are one of many users and atleast on MSFN you will get help if get issues with it. Windows 7 will have long life on power users who are not afraid to tweak their OS.

I actually use pfSense myself, but stopped using Pihole recently after it was acting up a little with my ads (probably could of just tweaked the list).

They may have had corrected issue on newer processors. I have only played with windows 7 up to AMD Ryzen 2xxx series and Intel Coffee lake cpu only which both had same issue so cannot say for sure

Unrelated, but one thing I have which really isn't Windows 7 or 10's fault, its the fault of my decision making. I want to like Windows 10, I really do and I have tried to in the last 5/6 years of using it as my main OS. (Moved to it 2 days after the RTM release). I've used every version of the OS from 1507 to the latest insiders and honestly when i'm not caring, it works fine. But when I started caring (around late 2018) I started hating it more and more as the releases go by and it got to a point where I just wiped Windows 10 from my PC and installed 7 (back in January). 10 has a few features I really like, such as better multi-monitor support (taskbars) and generally a more optimized DWM, plus I prefer fluent over aero (I like the higher amount of blur, but aero is fine too). Windows 7 100% works fine on my PC, but I also know that Windows 10 is the latest, gets updates, and has a larger user base.

Oddly, the things that make me choose an OS is the amount of market-share. I used 1903 from release to September of last year, until I upgraded because I realized that most Windows 10 computers were running 2004. A weird issue that I have where I want to use whatever most people use. Same with trying Linux.

The reason I didn't care about Windows 10 from 2015-2018 was because I just used my PC. I will give it that, it is very unnoticeable when you just want to sit down and get some work done. I never had it interrupt me or anything. I mainly just used it to play games until I started getting more and more into technology where I realized how poorly designed it was.

Computing nowadays has less and less advanced users. The advanced OSes now is Windows 7 and Linux. Windows 10 is clearly not designed to be an OS for the advanced tech-savvy users. After realizing this, I wished I stayed with 7 instead of updating to 10 in 2015. I've also been locked into the Windows 10 ecosystem too.

The only reason I use Windows 7 now and like it is because I grew up with it. The best times in my life (early - mid 2010s) was spent with Windows 7. The memories I have with Windows 10 are entirely sour starting in 2018. Before then, I had good times with 1703 and older. That is just a mental image. There is actual reasoning with how Windows 7 is still better, 12 years later. It oddly still supports all apps, is still fast, and can still run on computers made 12 years later. It's a more unified and simple OS with less back and forth. I will not say consistent; every version of Windows is inconsistent. 10 is fairly consistent for its release time, but also has a fair bit of dated functions. I usually pick an OS for "if it works and do I like it".

The times where I didn't repeatedly think about what I was running was nice, really, really nice. September to December 2020 I stopped caring and the relief was nice, until I got right back into failing at decision making what I should use, because its a battle of nostalgia vs what ACTUALLY is useful.

Windows 10 as I said earlier, works for the majority of people. The majority of users don't care or notice anything weird. One of my teachers is still running 1709 and doesn't notice.

Meanwhile, even using 1903 and knowing market-share about it makes me want to go to 2004 or higher. Windows 7 same way, I like using it but knowing market-share completely demolishes my motivation to use it.

In another case, I could just be overthinking this over just a simple computer OS. Microsoft made it harder than it needs to be. I care about my privacy for apps on my computer. As far as web browsing, I could care less. I just don't want MS looking through my files and stuff like that. I think I have restored my Windows 10 and 7 image of my PC (all apps installed) probably 2 times a day in the last 3 months because I can't choose. They both have strong pros and cons, and in a situation like this where I don't want to dual boot, It's a hard decision to make.

  3. Looks like one software I am moving away from. They announced today that they will be restricting free users to an unlimited amount of only one type of device (Like phones, iPad, chrome extension) and you have to choose one and can't be in two at once. I moved to Bitwarden (open source and free) and it works a lot better and has no stupid restrictions. Bad decision by lastpass for the consumers, but they get more money so.

You might want disable some of power management options like pci power saving or you may experience blackscreening. I turned off all power saving could and problem went away

Oddly enough, back when this was happening it was mainly caused by my old CPU. I got the 9700K and it was actually not drawing as much power idle as the 8400.

If you are using versions of Windows 10 before the official colored title bar fix, you could try this: https://winaero.com/get-colored-title-bars-in-windows-10/

Well that situation didn't last long. Seemed like my AMD drivers did not work well, the driver kept crashing every time I ran any type of 3D application. AMD drivers are pretty unstable sometimes, and I was lucky to even get it to function at all on the RTM build. After that disaster, I did finally realize that Windows 10 isn't as bad as it was when it came out in 2015. I eventually just threw a fresh copy of 7 on my PC and gonna go with it. Any problems, it is what it is. I already fixed my multi-monitor issue and now the only thing stopping me from certain things is programs not working, which also that doesn't exist because all my programs work.

I can see how some people use 10 nowadays, but personally I just really don't like 10 lately. When the UI refresh comes out, ill try it again.

Yes, this is quite true. ^_^

Indeed, it can also be made into a rather fun learning experience if you learn and slowly digest that information within a safe environment such as a virtual machine. So, if you ever somehow broke something you could simply roll back to the previous snapshot and start from where you left off.

Powerful, but steep learning curve that I will eventually one day tackle.

Funny thing about that is I used Linux for a fair bit back in 2013. Our PC had failing RAM and my Dad decided to install Ubuntu on it. My first experience with Linux and I really didn't mind it, until I started using Windows after that up until now. I had it on an old laptop at the time, and remember messing around with Windows Vista VMs as well. Last time I ever used Linux for a week or so was in early 2015.

So basically I can see that most Linux users like to get stuff done on their computer and love how it "just works" on Linux. They even get to know and learn how their computer works too, like all the /dev things, services and others. Windows used to be about that preXP but afterwards it just got dumber and dumber over time, until we were met with 10, which im sure that someone happily uses, but people like us who aren't willing to fully switch to Linux (or just can't) who avoid Windows 10 as hard as possible. I've been trying to escape Windows 10 for the past year now and its been a struggle.

I guess I'll give my opinion on this.

The OS that I think is the most fun to use would be Windows 2000. The UI was a result of many well-done studies by Microsoft in the 90s, and provides an interface that's efficient and intuitive. The control panel is very organized with config dialogs that are simple, but not dumbed down. However, the OS is old and not very usable as a daily driver due to lack of hardware and software support. There are a handful of improvements I've seen since 2000 then like the taskbar grouping in XP, the searchable Start menu in Vista, and the Aero Snap feature in 7, but most of the changes were unnecessary cruft just to make it look shiny and different or to catch onto design fads.

Linux by far provides the most functionality of any OS I've used. Want to make a ramdisk, create and edit disk images, completely change the look of your desktop, and take total control over what your computer does? Linux can do that with no problem. However, being such a hodgepodge of software from various developers, the user experience and consistency between applications in Linux is not great. Many programs can do a lot, but require reading pages and pages of documentation to understand how to use them and figure out what all the command-line switches and configuration files do.

I'm personally a Linux user now, but finding one's balance between user experience and functionality can be difficult.

I would definitely use Linux if I could, but I just don't want to have to mess with it. I'd just rather install it and go along with all my apps working.

  9. Solved the issue! I forced my 60hz one to 75hz using the nvidia panel AND the amd panel on the other card and it fixed all my issues. Everything is smooth and games don't lag anymore even with aero on. Chrome isn't laggy anymore same with Discord.

BUY ALL YOUR MONITORS BEING THE SAME MODEL + REFRESH RATE

Guess I'll just have to try regular 7

A consideration though is my GPU drivers. AMD drivers suck badly for every OS except for the open source ones on Linux and macOS. I have an older 1050 Ti that I will try out and see how that goes. I've been meaning to sell my current AMD card anyway.

Are you saying the slowdown occurs only if some application is on the slow monitor, but not otherwise? That'd be strange, because AFAIK, DWM refreshes at the speed of the slowest monitor, so the slow monitor always bogs all the others down.

With nothing on this monitor, windows moving is fine. With something on it, the thing on it is extremely laggy and other windows are laggy as well.

In my case, I usually have a browser on my 60hz 1080p browser maximized all the time, sometimes also playing a video

While this is the case, I don't notice anything being laggy, other than Gecko being Gecko. I notice some things have really fluid animations on the 144hz monitor with the other monitors connected, and one of those things is a Chromium wrapper

I do the same thing and whenever that is the case with aero ON, games, Discord, and the browser will lag badly. With aero off however (Basic or Classic) Discord, Games and the browser runs perfect and snappy.

What if you turn off the extra monitor(s) using an app like ClickMonitorDDC instead of disabling? Usually I use this cmd line to turn off my secondary display via software-only:

    ClickMonitorDDC_7_0.exe <name of monitor listed in ClickMonitorDDC app> x

The same command turns it on again. Does that improve your gaming performance?

Just tried this program and regardless of that it is a really nice program, all my monitor support DDC including the one from 2010.

Not something I know anything about from personal experience but plenty of information out there suggesting explanations for this problem.

The most obvious one is you're exceeding your GPUs performance capacity. But the explanation that seems to fit the information provided is that mixing monitors with different refresh rates can cause lag. So that 60Hz 900p ACER (the bad one?) may be the cause and if you had three identical ones there would be no problem.

However without that third identical one to to test the theory you can't prove it.

My GPU is pretty powerful (eql RTX 2070) so I am not sure this would be the cause. I think 7 Aero keeps refreshing on the 60hz monitor. With Vsync on in Minecraft, I can notice that without anything on the monitor, I get 75FPS. With something on the monitor, I get 60FPS.

On 2/8/2021 at 9:00 AM, UCyborg said:

Windows 7's DWM simply doesn't handle mixed refresh rates properly. If you want all 3 monitors active at once, all of them must run at the same refresh rate.

I may be able to use the AMD radeon software to force the monitor to run at 75hz, ive done it before.

    I have a 1440p 144hz monitor, a 1440p 60hz monitor, and a 1080p 60hz monitor.

    How is this working fine?

    6 minutes ago, UCyborg said:

On my end, if I put the second screen to 75 Hz while keeping the first at 59 Hz, things are fine on the first screen, but anything placed on the second one is laggy. If only second screen is active, it's fine, likewise if both are at 59/60 Hz, everything is smooth regardless of which screen a particular application occupies.

In my case, anything that gets put on the second monitor that is the lowest refresh rate, it slows down all the other monitors, which also for some reason causes web browsers and electron apps to become extremely laggy. With Basic, this problem doesn't exist.

  13. I play games on Windows 7. I notice that sometimes the games lag and I found the cause.

With all 3 of my monitors enabled, the game lags.

With the two good ones enabled, the game doesn't lag.

With one monitor, the game runs great.

With one good and one bad one, the game lags.

    My monitor setup is:

    LEFT = Acer P205H (60hz 900p)
    MIDDLE = Acer SB220Q (75hz 1080p)
    RIGHT = Acer SB220Q (75hz 1080p)

Is there a way to fix this other than disabling the monitor when playing games? Disabling DWM (using basic) fixes it as well.

I'm also not able to like Windows 10! I'm also mading experiments with Windows XP. I once tried to make a Windows 10 VM (inside Windows XP X86 and VMware Player 6) with 1,5gb of ram in order to avoid restarting my pc and booting Windows 8.1 when I need to run a "modern" application. Windows 10 (version 20H2) was installed successfully, but when I installed my Screen Reader (NVDA) it became too slow so I wasn't able to use the VM when I restarted it. I plan to make again that experiment, but using Windows 10 LTSB 2016.

Ive used 10 for the past 5 years and have been really pushing to switch 100% to Windows 7, but its gonna be a struggle.

  15. 4 hours ago, Sergiaws said:

A thing that could be done if you need to use Windows 10 is install Windows 10 LTSB/LTSC. It's lighter than the normal Windows 10, but as I discovered, it has a problem. If you suddenly shutdown the system, you break it accidentally and you try to repair it with the disk, the reparation options don't work, and you can't upgrade it. So in that case you need to do a clean installation. So create an image of your System. That happened once with my Windows 10 installation.

want to like Windows 10, but with where it is I just can't.

  16. Whenever I record / share screen using a screen capture app with aero enabled, Windows 7 caps the FPS to 30. I am wondering if I can patch DWM to not have this limitation as the limitation does not exist in Basic + Classic theme. Is this a thing that can be done?

  17. 1 hour ago, Tripredacus said:

I've actually seen this myself. When this happens, you can find in event viewer that Steam.exe vetoes the Shutdown request! I just make sure to exit Steam before shutting down.

I could possibly go into Task Scheduler and have a task in there that terminates steam forcefully, and hope that it runs before the shutdown request of apps.
