My Browser Builds (Part 3)
NotHereToPlayGames replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
I sometimes really just can't help but laugh at some of the conspiracies that run rampant in these hallways. You don't trust Chinese software, I get it. You don't trust Russian software, I get it. But how about a little perspective here! The UNITED STATES is number 2 on the list of top hacking countries worldwide! China is #1, USA is #2, Turkey is #3, Russia is #4, Taiwan is #5, Brazil is #6, Romania is #7. That ordering was true in a 2012 article and remained the same order in a 2019 article - I'll leave the Google/Bing/Duck searches for your own free time. And, um, roytam1 is Chinese - I'll ask this, where do you think top Chinese Hackers got their start? Maybe by doing projects like roytam1? What will roytam1 be doing 30yrs from now? No offense to roytam1, I/we really do love your work! But come on, does MSFN really have to be so chock full of anti-this, anti-that at every turn of the corner? But I digress... -
Right you are, I thought there were a few api files but upon double-checking, you are correct, there are none. I use the "portable loader", maybe that's 'sandboxing' everything and not letting my 360Chrome fetch OS runtimes? (which I'm okay with, TBH, as I prefer as much of my software to be "self-contained" as possible)
-
No, that screencap is from my XP x64 machine (my primary rig). But I have the same runtimes (x86 only, of course) on my XP x86 machines. From what I can see, "installed" runtimes have NO EFFECT on 360Chrome. In fact, I get the same benchmark figures from my XP x86, my XP x64, my Win 7 Enterprise (32bit), my Win10 LTSB (32bit), and even from my XP x86 VMs with NO RUNTIMES installed at all. So my 360Chrome is using ONLY the api files within its own subfolders and isn't grabbing any from the OS.
-
I'm confused. Adding additional api-ms files killed your 360Chrome's performance, correct? So this demonstrates that 360Chrome found those api-ms files and loaded them, correct? So you removed the api-ms files and 360Chrome's performace returned back to normal. Then you installed the latest runtime and that killed 360Chrome's perfmance again, correct? I'm confused because I have the MS Visual C++ runtimes installed and IF my 360Chrome performed as poorly as Mini Browser then I assure you, I would NOT be using it. My 360Chrome really is extremely comparable to Mypal 27.9.4 or it would not have dethroned it as my default. And it gains me several dozens of websites that I simply could not visit using Mypal 27.9.4. Or even the newer New Moon v27's, New Moon v28's, and BNavigator, for that matter. Yes, we have to jump through a few hoops to get to a full English version and to prevent telemetry, but WELL WORTH IT in my view.
-
@CRK At the BARE MINIMUM, please do the above step. This will prevent the Russian pages you keep seeing. I also suggest the HOSTS file updates as a BARE MINIMUM in the post above the post copied above (see Page 1 of this thread). If you have a real interest in using 360Chrome, these procedures are not that difficult, even for a "new dog" to learn
-
For 360Chrome, I personally don't recommend anything newer than version 13 build 2206 for the "repack". Anything newer is "broken" as far as being used as an ENGLISH browser. I would suggest this thread also -- https://msfn.org/board/topic/182370-extreme-explorer-360-a-how-to-guide-converting-remaining-chinese-to-english/ 360Chrome v13 build 2206 has never crashed for me since upgrading Stylus to v1.5.17, I would get constant crashes during style edits on earlier versions of Stylus. I don't use uBlock Origin, I prefer uMatrix (development ended in late 2020 but it has matured to the point of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it").

Not really XP per se but sharing in case others may also benefit. My wireless network has always had a download speed of only 8-13 Mbps on the living room computer. But it has also always stayed in that range even when the living room Roku is streaming HD at 4-5 Mbps (bedroom Roku streams at 33 Mbps but it's six feet away from wireless router). Those living room speeds have always "been enough" so I never really worried too much about it. Until a new customer requested Webex meetings on a regular basis and the living room download speed had choppy audio unless the video was disabled for non-share meeting attendees. Here's my stumble-upon -- a program called Vistumbler - https://www.vistumbler.net/ (only tested on Win10 laptop and did not try the GPS and Google Earth features). And a few Google search articles regarding a Roku "feature" called 'interference mitigation' (enabled by default). Basically, against my knowledge and with no regard for "my" preference, the Roku 'by default' was using a "technology" to DEGRADE traffic on my other devices so that it could steal bandwidth for improved signal to itself! So very very very NOT COOL !!!... This "feature" was forcing my router to use Channel 2 (wireless should always use Channel 1, 6, or 11 for best performance). At any rate, after a long day of research and antenna signal strength testing and disabling Roku "features", my living room is now at a 19-23 Mbps download range (even saw 26 Mbps a couple times). The Roku's didn't change, one is still at 4-5 and the other is still at 33 - the "feature" did NOTHING to improve it's OWN speed, only to DEGRADE my other devices. We now return you to your regular channel (1, 6, or 11).

I assume you are asking about x86 SP2 (I ran it in x64 SP2 just fine), I personally don't run (nor need) x86 SP2 so have no way of testing. But I have a strong hunch that yes, you need x86 SP3. I also personally avoid POS updates and stick with EOL. POS updates broke several of my applications and it wasn't worth the time to track down which updates were the root cause. I didn't do any extensive testing, but enought to show that I plan to stick with 360Chrome v13 build 2206 at least for now. I disable webgl in my browsers for default browsing but benchmark with webgl enabled - MiniBrowser crashed while 360Chrome did not. And I "demand" a full-time STATUS BAR which is rare these days, I know, but I'm keeping that full-time STATUS BAR forever, if possible, no d@mn popup "bubble".

credit to @user57 in the "Windows XP Media Center Edition" subforum <snip> working Chromium v87 for windows xp download links: http://www.filedropper.com/minibrowsersetup1071 https://www.file-upload.net/download-14566263/MiniBrowserSetup_1071.exe.html https://easyupload.io/e3fdad https://transferxl.com/08M79dPPgqG1M https://file.io/wFhiH69x9vge https://filebin.net/jqbzrykgxjv8hl2r </snip> I've tried in XP and it seems to work quite well. You don't need to "install" it. And I use the "360Loader" from 360Chrome to run it as a "portable". Extract the "MiniBrowserSetup_1071.exe" installer file using 7-Zip. You then only need the "bin" folder. Copy the 360Chrome folder over to a new location. It should contain only "360Loader.exe", "360Loader.ini", and a folder called "Chrome". Copy the "bin" folder into the "Chrome" subfolder. Edit the "360Loader.ini" file - here is what I am using - <start> [Setup] AppName=MiniBrowser [FileToRun] PathToExe=.\Chrome\Bin\$AppName$.exe Parameters=--user-data-dir="%Profile%" --disable-logging --no-default-browser-check --disable-component-update --disable-background-networking --allow-outdated-plugins --cipher-suite-blacklist=0xe013 --disable-webgl [Environment] Profile=.\Chrome\User Data Registry=%Profile%\Registry [Functions] DirCreate=%Profile%|%Registry% [WriteToReg=%Registry%\$AppName$.reg] MainKey=HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MiniChrome [RunBefore] RegEdit=%Registry%\$AppName$.reg [RunAfter] [Options] DeleteTemp=true ShowSplash=false WriteLog=false ShowTrayTip=false </end> You can now launch this new browser as a portable viia the "360Loader.exe" and not affect your other browsers.

Here's one to disable the worst invention known to man as far as I'm concerned (ie, blurry migraine-inducing anti-aliased sub-pixel font rendering) -- https://userscripts-mirror.org/scripts/show/179933 I personally disable them via a Stylus User Style when uMatrix or NoScript doesn't suffice by themselves by blocking useless fonts, but it's nice to know that there's a User Script for the task as well. Not really an XP issue but I use the same browser profile on my 7's and 10's.

My Browser Builds (Part 3)
NotHereToPlayGames replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Your question reveals that you have a small learning-curve ahead. But since you already know that you can "inspect element and modify", the learning curve should be small. "Inspect element and modify" would work - but you would have to "inspect element and modify" EVERY time that you visit Google Drive. You will need to install an add-on in your NM27. The add-on is called "Stylem" and can be obtained from here -- https://addons.palemoon.org/addon/stylem/ You then create a User Style for Google Drive using the CSS that @RainyShadow provided. -
I don't under normal circumstances. I work from home and I have a new customer that runs me through a VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) and runs a Flash-Locked version of IE11. It's a lot of graphics and there's a lot of "lag" unless I drop down to 16-bit graphics. Much appreciated for your assistance.

VRAM was already max'd out. The superuser article did the trick! Much appreciated!

My Host is XP x64 with 5 monitors. My Guest is Win 7 x86 with 2 monitors (VirtualBox allows you one monitor per Host monitor). But when I drop my Guests down to 16-bit, my primary can be windowed at near-full resolution (I keep a column of Host OS desktop icons visible), so Guest Display #1 is at 1835 x 975. But my Guest Display #2 maxes out at 1174 x 975.
-
We must have both been typing at the same time. I'm trying to get VirtualBox to autmatically run two screens in 16-bit color but trying to keep a resolution of 1835 x 975 on both of the Guest OS screens.
-
Hmm, disregard. Doesn't look like that will get me where I need to be anyway. Here's what I was hoping and maybe somebody can still offer a suggestion or two. When I open VirtualBox (v4.3.28) on a two-monitor computer, if I open in Compatibility Mode and run in 256 colors, Guest Display #1 will be in 256 colors but Guest Display #2 will be in 32-bit. If I set my host displays to 16-bit, Guest Display #1 and Guest Display #2 are still in 32-bit. I can manually set Guest Display #1 and Guest Display #2 to 16-bit, but only Display #1 can have a resolution greater than X x Y (forgot the actual resolution). Display #2 is limited to roughly only half the width of the actual monitor.

Latest Version of Software Running on XP
NotHereToPlayGames replied to pointertovoid's topic in Windows XP
I did try an extention from the Chrome Web Store by the same name in 360Chrome and it did not work. I will try sometime this week in a Mozilla-based browser and see if that works. -
Does anybody know of a way in Win XP to run a program in Compatibility Mode but as 16-bit instead of 8-bit (256 colors)?

Doesn't find a CSS selector for the memorized password dropdown (must be browser-level), but useful tool to keep around, thanks, adding it to the arsenal. -

I have a general BNavigator question regarding my Stylem User Style sheets. When a username or password is memorized, BNavigator drops down a select-box below the input field. With no "inspect" utiltiy in BNavigator, how do I find the attributes for this select-box (ie, so I can change the font for example)? Or is this "browser-level" and beyond Stylem? -

@kartel Regarding Google Drive - it also does not work in Firefox ESR 52.9.0 and nor does it work in Firefox Quantum ESR 68.12.0. It does work in Firefox Browser ESR 78.10.0 and in Firefox Browser 88.0. -

No luck here in old or new versions of NM27, NM28, BNavigator, and MyPal 27.9.4. I don't know how to "prove" that it is Chrome-Only, but I can only perform your cited task in a Chrome-based browser. Sorry, I tried to help you out. "it is what it is"...
