  1. gape's service pack only provides critical updates for IE 5.01, and not 5.5. Microsoft still continue to support IE 5.5 on windows me systems. well, windows me is the only system u can still continue to download 5.5 for, however i would say the patches for it would still work on win95 and 98. I would b more trusting in opera than in firefox as wel. i agree that wmp and dx aint as important and could be made to optional features or wateva, but i for one believe IE6 should be mandatory.
  2. may i ask why? (so harsh to mozilla) i dnt trust open source browsers. i prefer to trust a prgram that is coded behind closed doors, than ones that are opened to the public. especially wen it comes to internet banking. going a few pages back; eventually ms will stop supplying updates to ie 5.01 for security patches (if they already havnt), but continue to update ie6. so wouldnt it make more sense to include IE6sp1 in the SP as it would secure the latest security vulnerabilities to windows 98 thru IE?
  3. but i do want IE. no windows system in my house will ever run a mozilla based browser as its default.
  4. well u could always get a conversion done so you can run ur car on petrol so it can run leaded or unleaded....with gas and petrol, ure car can run on TWO fuels!
  5. my friend had/has a wireless logitech keyboard n mouse...he dusnt use em anymore, i wonder y... wireless networking and all that is something i wouldnt run in the suburbs. even if encrypted. mite have a smartass neighbor who hacks in n downloads stuff with ur bandwidth. i mainly only use the multimedia keys for volume control. but i use a lot of keyboard shortcuts as well. im not gonna spend double the amount for some ms multimedia crap that cant even do a simple function like ALT+F4.
  6. mine is a Compaq LTE 5300...133mhz, 80mb or RAM (9yrs old now). i use it more than my main machine cos i laze in bed a lot. this thing got me thru yr12, even tho once it wouldnt turn on wen i needed to do my work, so i had to pull it apart during my free period during 3rd period so i could get it to work during 4th period. Then i got a lecture from my teacher about backing up my work...this guy knows nothing about computers and doesnt realise a harddrive is a seperate componant.
  7. Oh, is that so huh? My computer comes bundled with IE like every other wndows machine. I wana keep it there, rather than installing other 3rd party crap. those who say "o, but IE is only dominating the market cos its the default browser in the OS and ppl dont know any better" better get their heads checked. The internet is a marketing device, of course they are gonna see ads for alternative browsers. heck, some people will be given alternatives upon installation of their internet on their system via their internet startup cd from their ISP... The day that one of these open source browsers comes the default in windows, is the day i turn to budism... for a dialup user, it doesnt really matter what the size of a file is, it can be done. personally, the largest files ive downloaded have been 700mb on dialup.
  8. exactly, ms can get screwed as far as their multimedia keyboard goes....its too big and ugly. a few months ago i bought a new keyboard for my main machine for $12 which is branded 'starkey' and has volume control, internet buttons...etc. dus the job n even comes with one of those wrist things...thats dirt cheap for a keyboard ova here. one thing i will neva buy is a wireless keyboard or mouse...i cant b bothad splurgin on batteries or hangin my mouse in a cradle every time im dun with it...
  9. erpdude8: i believe the 9x kernel will live on and people will further find ways to make it live. look at BeOS? If their were more people developing drivers, this system would be kick-a** for sure.
  10. i thought the SP only LIMITS win98 to reading 512mb of ram?..u no, through msconfig?
  11. i have tried this method from the above link, and in the experience i had with doing that, caused the keyboard to lock up....which is only a generic $10AUD keyboard...
  12. WMP9 is slow as on old machines. but i reccommend u install WMP9, and then enable 6.4 as the default player. Especially if you are watching a few streaming vids in internet explorer. A lot of sites complain about a WMP9 not being installed even if you have the VCM9 Codec installed. (I use this method on my 133mhz laptop, and 150mhz and 233mhz desktops) I remember using IE6 Beta and the first official release of it on Windows ME and 98SE. It was an unbelievable nightmare. I believe IE6 SP1 runs a lot better and more reliant since then. As for the speed difference in load times, i dont think there is that much difference between 5.5 and 6.0. All systems mentioned run DirectX 9.0c, not a problem. i agree that modern office versions are full of crap u'll never use. i have contemplated going back from 2002 to 2000. but i wouldnt go as far as to 97. 2000 is still highly compatible with 2002 and 2003.
  13. if you have office 97, then u are only licenced for 97, not 2000 pro. using 2000 would be considered using pirated software. i am unsure y u would put installing ur drivers before IE6, thats kinda stupid? the joys of 16colors on a 640x480 desktop... below is my method: 1. Install Win98 2. Install all updated drivers 3. Install DirectX 9.0c 4. Install Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (Don't forget to delete the backup files after) 5. Install Windows Media Player 9 and WMP8 Codecs 6. Windows Update 7. Install Anti-Virus (AVG Free Edition 7.0) * If using Gape's service pack, i install it after step 2
  14. i am athiest and have no need for this religious crap, but you should tolerate others beliefs. personally i dnt giv a **** if some1 is religious as long as they dnt force it onto me.
  15. i thought windows 98 can only recognise 512mb of ram?
  16. it could just as well be. on one of my systems running this SP, i get constant disconnections. not sure if it was happening before the implementation of the service pack on that system as i did not use that modem often. it is a connexant based Puretek Internal 56k modem. perhaps gape could advise u on how to re-install DUN without windows grabbing files from the sp1.cab. i would say to temporarily rename that file and try. but do so at ur own risk. this would then restore the original DUN version. and soldier1st, are you saying not many ppl USE floppy drives, or not many computers come standard with floppy drives in canada?
  17. ur joking rite? i am yet to see a desktop computer in australian retail shops being sold without floppy drives. floppy disks are listed on skool booklists for students to use to back their work up on. as for that error on your POST screen, i believe that has nothing to do with the service pack. go into your systems CMOS and change the floppy drive type to 1.44mb 3 1/2". this varies on systems. are you using an external modem? double check both ur modem settings, and ur connection settings. i realise without the service pack everything works fine. but the service pack has obiously upset something so its worthwhile checking. it mite pay to update ur modem drivers. try to steer clear of microsoft and generic connexant drivers and retrieve the drivers from your modem vendor's website. im tipping this has something to do with an update to the COM ports?
  18. Just seems to me like its a hidden feature.
  19. good luck cloning an NT platform. *KERNEL PANIC*
  20. this is not just a matter of software tweaks to get it running stable. ME is picky with its hardware. i would say forget using ISA hardware with it, even if you do use a third party driver.
  21. great idea. perhaps with WMP 8 codecs included as well, and WMP9 (preferable the extracted version from winxp sp2??). server space for this could become reasonably big for a single update, but perhaps some DIY instructions? (ive read the WMP for sp2 tutorial) there may not be as many users of ME as there are for 98se, but i still believe it would be worth creating one for ME as there are people who do still use it. hey, my systems with 98 would be running it if it would run stable on their hardware...
  22. is write support even possible? not everyone has a licence for 98lite, and not everyone would pay $25 or whateva to delete files, lol. ive never heard of "super scandisk wrapper", idea so i dont get what your saying. if your saying to use the dos scandisk to do a scan of disks outside of windows by default, im all for the idea. its a lot faster and dusnt require you to disable resident programs whilst scanning so you avoid the "contents changed...restarting scandisk" message. and i dont believe i was flaming you. these additional viewers should be made an optional componant rather than included in the mainstream install. i, as well as many others use office packages which open the content of these files. just in writing that, an idea sprung into my head...not sure if its possible. but an installation system where you can have a BASE service pack and you can download the OPTIONAL componants seperately as wanted and put the OPTIONAL componants into the same folder as the BASE service pack where the setup will detect the OPTIONAL componants and install them also?
  23. i didnt say ur post was messy, i sed ur IDEA sounded messy. ever seen an internet explorer browser opened and ppl hav like 2 or 3 additional toolbars in conjunction with a rearranged IE toolbar? its SCARY ok! ive lost count of the computers in the past i have fixed where ive had to use internet explorer and the browser looks unfriendly and uninviting. this is kinda how ur idea comes accross to me. im an advanced user n i hav no prob finding my way in IE, but not everyone has that ability..believe it or not. personally i am serial SHIFT holderer when i click links on webpages so mulitple windows dusnt botha me. i hate to be steered away from a site i want to keep open so i open a new IE window (plz dnt start on firefox and tabs i beg of u..). afterall windows is a multitasking operating system. but wen it comes to using win95 it s***s me. everyone has their own likes n dislikes. so if u find ur idea to b useful then use it. dont let us flame u for it. but sorry i cannot agree to liking it. a simple idea that would be great to include would be to delete the MSN 5 Setup program on the dekstop as well as from program files and Online Services if found on the system after installation. seriously, its 2004 does anyone seriously need these?
  24. here! here! This mite b stupid to ask but is a recently new discovery to me. but how many ppl know of windows 98's capability of viewing image files as thumbnails in folders? i hav recently discovered this was possible by checking "thumbnail view" in the folder's properties, and then opening the folder and clicking "view as thumnails" or whateva.
  25. wouldnt this be something that can b done using the quicklauch bar?
