98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Hello Xstyle,Just because you had a bad experience with 98SE2ME, that doesn't make it unstable or bad. I know a few other thousand people who had a positive experience, and some of them still use 98SE2ME files on their computers [i am among them, I've been using 98SE2ME files for ~ 7 years now, with no problems]. But, I [nor any of my friends] don't have DSL [RASPPPoE], so I can't test that environment. Maybe you can. Please see READ1ST.TXT [the "KNOWN BUGS + FIXES" section]: BTW: If you are using the current 98SE2ME release, options 1 + 2 do not install nor modify EXPLORER.EXE in any way. Only option 3 installs EXPLORER.EXE from WinME CABs. And READ1ST.TXT: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/read1st.php states clearly in 2 places, that: If that is the case, please uninstall option 3 [from backups] as instructed in READ1ST.TXT: to get back Win98 SE explorer.exe .HTH -

98SE2ME option 3 can be automated [install completely unattended, but you need to have (preferably) the WinME CABs in the same directory where the 98SE2ME scripts are located] if you add these lines to your custom MSBATCH.INF file [this is a fragment from READ1ST.TXT, the "FAQ" section]:http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/read1st.php HTH -

Gape, Welcome back. I have tested SP 3.01 alpha. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to test your final version of SP 3.01. Could you please post [or email me, whatever is more convenient for you] the Q312586 [KBDSP.KBD] + Q329128 [VIP.386 4.10.2228] hotfixes, so I can post them here: http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#98SE P.S.: I took a look at the TIMEZONE.INF you're using in SP 3.01. It has the "old style" names, without "Standard Time" after each Time Zone name [XP/2003 do have the "Standard Time" in all Time Zone names = M$ changed this ~ 2-3 years ago in all M$ OSes]. Please take a look at the Q933360 fix [newest, contains all M$ fixes up to date], it has the "new style" INF [from XP/2003]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/Q933360.EXE Also, adding these registry values, as listed in your TIMEZONE.INF: forces the user to reset manually the time zone name correspondent to one's real time zone [especially outside USA], and then select the "DST" box [if appropriate for one's local TZ] = annoying, because the time zone in this INF applies only to USA users. All other users must do this manually.Reg values above should not be modified, they are changed properly by: (1) running the TIMEZONE.EXE tool with proper switches [see below] or (2) when the user resets the TZ values manually, using Control Panel -> Date/Time Properties CPL. Q933360.EXE uses TIMEZONE.EXE command line tool [from M$ Win98 Resource kit]: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/technet/...ig/TIMEZONE.EXE respectively [see Q933360.INF]: TIMEZONE.EXE 02-0-2-03 02-0-1-11 to properly reset the Time Zone and the DST automatically, without user intervention or need for a reboot, independent of user geographical location or TZ. M$ uses a similar tool [TZCHANGE.EXE] to do this in XP/2003/Vista, the "official" way. Appreciate your time. Many thanks.

Maximus-Decim Native USB Drivers
MDGx replied to maximus-decim's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
You don't have to install 98SE2ME:http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46349 for USB to work, but it is recommended to install it [options 1, 2 or 5], to get more INF files for more USB devices and newer USB system files. Unfortunately, if you don't have a WinME CD-ROM or setup CABs, you can't install 98SE2ME. This fragment is from 98SE2ME READ1ST.TXT [the "EXTREMELY IMPORTANT" section]: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/read1st.php HTH -
Hi, Thanks for your feedback. To my knowledge 98SE2ME doesn't "break" the graphics/VGA. I've never heard of such error. On the other hand, 98SE2ME was not designed for/tested on laptops, because I don't have any. And so far, all users who installed 98SE2ME on portables, never complained about video errors. To restore your original files with 98SE2ME installed [needed in C:\9!M] - from READ1ST.TXT: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/read1st.php If methods above do not work [you can't restore your OS to the previous state], try to boot in Safe Mode:http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm#MEN and restore from there. P.S.: From now on, please post all your questions/comments about 98SE2ME in the dedicated forum: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46349 HTH

One more tweak, ladies and gents... 1. Win9x OSes [Windows 95, 98 + ME]: Notice the & symbol, it adds a key shortcut "combo" to the right-click "File List..." option, which means from now on you can alternatively press Shift + L to create FileList.txt instead of left-clicking your mouse on the "File List..." selection.Your choice. Just don't put the & thingy in front of F , because that shortcut is already taken by the "Find" function. L is not taken by any other right-click option unless you have added your own. 2. Same REG file for WinNTx [Windows NT4, 2000, XP + 2003]: Have fun.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
These 2 have no function in Windows, they are used only by MS Office/Word, as far as I'm aware.I have deleted them from day 1, way back when I first installed Win98 FE, and never needed them, but that's me, I don't use any MS Office components. To my knowledge, both Win98 SE + ME install older ["generic", compared to Office which installs the "branded", more advanced] versions of these 2 files, so users without Office/Word can use Wordpad or/and Word Viewer to read DOC files. BTW, Wordpad can actually create primitive DOC + RTF files. These 2 take active part in reading from/writing to RTF files: RICHED20.DLL USP10.DLL and should be installed on all Windows computers. I'll test them to see if they work ok. HTH -
98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Thanks for your feedback.No reason, just never crossed my mind those files could make any difference. Sounds like CutePDF installs the Post Script driver for compatible printers [?], that's why it needs those 2 files, and obviously you do have such a printer. I'll do some tests, and eventually add them to 98SE2ME one of these days. Thanks. -
98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Sounds like your HD was in the middle of crashing [bad sectors ?], that's why the 98SE2ME "customized" autoexec.bat didn't get deleted after reboot [as it was meant to], and replaced with the original one (if any).The error messages involving "C:\9!M not found" were due to the fact that you have uninstalled 98SE2ME from C:\9!M [probably after you finished installing 98SE2ME]. All batch files that install 98SE2ME options depend on the files from the C:\9!M folder to work properly. And like you said, if those files were not found, no harm was done to your system. Sorry to hear about your troubles, and I hope that after you get your HD back [or a new one], you will be able to test 98SE2ME again, without problems this time. HTH -
If any1 cares to do this on NTx OSes [NT4/2000/XP/2003], here is the REG code: CMD.EXE path doesn't need to be specified, it is included in the system path:%systemroot%\system32\cmd.exe Do not try to use command.com, it doesn't work. Save the above as a REG file in Notepad [as ASCII text, *not* as Unicode], then run it, and answer yes/ok to all prompts. Then open Windows Explorer, and have fun, right-clicking that is... HTH

Depends on your web site provider (host), which OS they're using on their hosting server. If they use Windows (2000/2003), you're stuck with IIS, and respectively ASP. If they use *nix, you're stuck with PHP, but you have the advantage you can also use [most all providers offer these for free] MySQL, Cronjobs, Zend, phpNuke, Mambo, Joomla, phpBB, etc..... That is unless they have both systems available, there are ports for ASP into *nix/BSD OSes, and similarly, PHP can be ported to Windows. HTML is simple, just open Notepad and type away. PHP [like Perl/CGI or Javascript] is more complex, requires a learning curve. HTH [Hope This Helps]

Just figured out... The way it is, this allows to create text list only if one right-clicks on a directory, but it doesn't work on the root dir of the drive. So one needs to add this reg file to make it work on the root [right-click the drive letter]: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Drive\shell\File List] @="File List" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Drive\shell\File List\command] @="C:\\COMMAND.COM /C DIR \"%1\" /A-D/O:GEN/B/S/-P/V > FILELIST.TXT" Please notice that my copy of command.com is located in C:\ root. This is because certain older DOS programs/games may need to find it there. I've also added C:\ root to the PATH [in my config.sys] to make things easier. Edit: command.com path doesn't need to be specified if this file is in a directory listed on the path [eventually included in autoexec.bat or config.sys], in my case C:\ root. Usually, command.com is located in %windir% , most of the time C:\WINDOWS . There is ususally another copy of command.com in the c:\windows\command folder. I also suggest to copy it to C:\ root, if using any DOS based games/programs. HTH

If by DOS tools you meant tools you can use from within a DOS box inside Windows [not native MS-DOS outside Windows], this is what you need [free GPL]: http://lbrisar.htmlplanet.com/e_cmd32.html#getver I use GETVER.EXE in 98SE2ME, just use it from the C:\9!M directory after you have installed 98SE2ME.EXE [do not need to install any options, press N at the first screen during install]: http://www.mdgx.com/4 HTH -
Two solutions here: 1. If you do have another drive with some free space: move C:\Program Files and %windir%\Start Menu folders + all their subfolders + files to that other drive. Open Windows Explorer -> right-click on C:\Program Files -> select Cut -> right-click on the other drive letter -> select Paste. Do the same with %windir%\Start Menu . You can also move, resize or even delete: - the swap file - Internet Explorer (IE) Temporary Internet Files (TIF), Cookies, History etc temp folders. - %TEMP% + %TMP% variables [usually customized by SET commands in config.sys/autoexec.bat], respectively the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP folder [default]. Must also point to the new locations into your registry by using TweakUI -> My Computer tab -> Special Folders list -> pick the ones you want and move them to any other valid location(s): http://download.microsoft.com/download/win...-US/Tweakui.exe To move TIF: right-click on your IE icon -> select Properties -> Settings button -> Move folder button -> move it to any other valid location. To move all IE temp folders, you can use Cache-Cloak [free, made by the 98lite folks]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/CACHCLOK.ZIP 2. If you don't have any other drives to move stuff around: use 98lite + Cache-Cloak to remove completely the swap file, IE temp + %TEMP% folders [or do it by hand by editing system.ini + the registry (saved by Regedit as text file with REG extension)], and then use a RAM drive DOS tool [add it to your config.sys/autoexec.bat as TSR] to move them to a RAM drive ["fake" hard disk]. RAM drive tool [free]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/RAMDRIVE.EXE RAM drive guide: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip12.htm#CACHRAM Also, you can delete the entire %windir%\HELP directory, some unneeded fonts [but not the system fonts, like Arial, Times, Courier, Wingding, Marlett, Serif, VGA, Fixedsys, System] from %windir%\FONTS , more than half of the INF files from %windir%\INF , some of the SYS drivers from %windir%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS [especially if you don't use Firewire, USB devices], all BMP + AVI files from %windir% , etc... You could also uninstall Internet Explorer: - MSKB: How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=263470 - MSKB: How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 6: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=293907 - LitePC: IEradicator: http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html Delete unnecessary files guide: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip5.htm#TEMPFILES Remove unneeded/bloat/useless Windows components from Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Setup tab -> uncheck different boxes you wish -> may need to reboot, depending on which ones you remove. These are only a few pointers, to show you that you don't need a pre-packaged mini-98/whatever (floppy) setup, but you should know that you can remove selectively a lot of Win98 components. HTH

Nice, thanks for the working command.Actually, if this is used on directories with huge number of files, the SORT.EXE utility cannot properly sort all files, and will display an error message at the begining of the filelist.txt file, something like: The solution is to use the DIR /O:GEN (example) file sorting feature instead.Here are all valid DIR command line parameters + switches: Works great for me. So this is the command I'm using: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\File List] @="File List" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\File List\command] @="C:\\COMMAND.COM /C DIR \"%1\" /A-D/O:GEN/B/S/-P/V > FILELIST.TXT" I've added the /V switch, just in case I get any errors, I'd like to see them listed in the text file. A big no-no: do not place the /C switch without space right aftert command.com , nor: DIR/A-D/etc.... Must be at least 1 space between command.com and its switch(es) and between DIR and its switch(es): DIR /A-D/etc... HTH

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Actually most of those files are older versions, except for:RICHED20.DLL USP10.DLL which are newer. I have not properly tested them yet. I'll let you know if/when I do. I don't see the usefulness of HLP95EN.DLL , unless using MS Office, this file doesn't do anything in Windows, any release. Most of those fonts are also older, as far as I can tell. And some of those fonts cannot even be used with 9x OSes, they are Unicode [NTx OS] specific. HTH -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
MDGx replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Could you possibly expand on this? EDIT: While i'm asking questions, pardon my ignorance, but any info on what the following update fixes? Unofficial Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE KRNL386.EXE 4.10.1999 Fix - oh, is it "This Fix may correct Kernel errors after installing Cursor + Icon Handling Fix" ... is that all it does? EDIT2: --- regarding your announcement of the Flash 9.0.74 32-bit Web Player release .... did you mean 9.0.47? --- that's what looks like is installed 1. I've just updated VS6SP6U.EXE :- new method of install for MSVCRT.DLL ["borrowed" from KB838751.EXE = http://www.mdgx.com/files/KB838751.EXE ] = renamed twice, otherwise does not install properly. - added COMCT232.OCX 6.0.80.22 = this is a very old file, not part of VS6 SP6, but part of ol' VS4, I guess [?]. Please try it [2.11 MB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/VS6SP6U.EXE 2. All these files [actually newer versions]: asycfilt.dll comcat.dll oleaut32.dll olepro32.dll stdole2.tlb are installed by OLEUP.EXE [512 KB]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/OLEUP.EXE except for comcat.dll, which is installed by 98SE2ME, because the newest version is on the WinME setup CD-ROM. But I have not tested this comcat.dll with Win95 or NT4. 3. Extract VS6SP6U.INF from VS6SP6U.EXE, and open the INF in Notepad. MV6.DLL [MSVCRT.DLL renamed] + ATL32S.DLL [ATL.DLL renamed] must be listed as such in the SED code, and in the INF sections that rename/copy them, which are necesary for proper install. If you would try to install those files the usual way, just by running an iexpress installer or running an INF to copy them to %windir%\system , you would get errors, and Windows would lock up after reboot, because those files canNOT be replaced the "normal" way. That's why I came up with this workaround, which was actually suggested by erpdude8 a while back, he "dissected" an INF from an old installer, I guess. 4. KRNL386.EXE 4.10.1999 = the anonymous author who sent this fix a while back, said that this patched file may fix some kernel issues, and that it is mostly useful if also installing the .ANI Cursor + Icon fixes. Here: http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#ENC Windows Media Video 9 Advanced Profile (WMV9AP) Update Beta for Windows 2000/XP/2003 includes SMPTE VC-1 standard + Advanced Profiles support (WMCMD.VBS): WMV9AP [899 KB]: http://www-pc.uni-regensburg.de/systemsw/W...dia/wvc1dmo.exe To install wvc1dmo.exe : 1. Create C:\TEMP (if not already present) (example): MD C:\TEMP 2. Run: WVC1DMO.EXE /C /Q /T:C:\TEMP to extract the files into C:\TEMP . 3. Open Windows Explorer -> right-click on WVC1DMO.INF -> select Install. This will copy the 2 DLLs to %windir%\system [%windir% = usually C:\WINDOWS]: WVC1DMOD.DLL WVC1DMOE.DLL and will also properly regsvr32 them into the registry. 4. Done. HTH

I have no idea why this happens on your computer, never happened on anybody else's as far as I'm aware.Could you please post here the autoexec.bat code and the exact messages [file names, if any] you see upon every boot? If I could see it, maybe I can try to fix it. Thanks in advance.
