  1. I agree on both accounts The activation story sounded strange at best, but I did see it in print. No doubt, there is some user error going on too. As to the one error message about "memory hierarchy". I'd appreciate any light you could shed on that. I woudn't think it'd be the machine memory, as UT2004 can crank for hours without a glitch. Thanks.
  2. I just got the final OEM version from Newegg...it does not come with a preinstall cd as pictured, and unlike two mainstream software reviewers claim, it does in fact have to be activated. I loaded it onto a machine--already setup for 64bit-- that worked fine with 32 bit. It was a vanilla install--no extra flavors--no custom winnt.sif file--nothing but straight install...I got a ton of error messages , "Machine check errors", and "memory hierarchy" error messages (remember, the machine was fine with 32bit) Clicking the error message links you a MS database, where you're greeted with "no information available for that error message". Kind of hard to get software vendors excited about supporting x64, when MS itself is, shall we say, somewhat lacking.
  3. I could be mistaken being somewhat new to some of this stuff myself, but the one thing I saw missing from your winnt.sif file was a line right above Data " ;SetupMgrTag " (only without qoutations marks). It's just a thought.
  4. 3dvelocity.com has a good list of programs that will or won't work with 64 bit, plus there a list or two here in the forum. Let the search engine be your guide.
  5. That's a good list. After looking it over, I decided not to get x64 right now, as some of the main programs I use are red listed--like Alcohol 120...I contacted the company, and they said they "were working on 64 bit drivers, but had no idea when they'd be available"...You'd think some of these software folks would have already been prepared, knowing 64 bit was just around the corner.
  6. I see "Install" in one place, and "install" in another...it's the small stuff that'll give you a headache. Got to double check the spelling, caps, etc. in your R.O.E.--it's super easy to overlook a minor detail.
  7. Yep, sounds like you might have got burned, and will have to end up getting a legit disk anyway......as to the message you're getting. Is it "NTLDR is Missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del? If so,I found 2 causes (speaking for myself, mind you!)...Trying to reload on top of an incomplete installation, and, in a Raid-0 setup, the bios wanted to switch over to the non-system drive upon reboot...relocating the Sata connection took care of that situation, and reformatting the drive to clean up any previous installation files took care of it in another. (I prefer Killdisk to clean up the disk, then choose the quick format option when installing XP). Unplug any extra drives, start with a fresh format, and see what happens--good luck.
  8. It irritates me to look for something, ask about it, then find it while looking for something else. There are software entries in HKCU and HKU called StarSynergy that has the info.
  9. Never had a problem or got error messages with 1.9.2.1705 (using the /qn switch)...But I do have a problem with version 1.9.5.2802. It's online activated-- Here we go again.... Anyone know where that little bit of info is hidden? ( It installs with the same switch, only the "username" in the reg. uses your email address instead of just your name)--looks like it utilizes hash #'s like XP's activation, so perhaps there's a file like wpa.dbl stashed somewhere. I got tired of looking-- maybe someone already knows??
  10. I didn't have any luck installing and activating Ghostsurf through the use of Installrite. Acronis TI8 on the other hand, backed up and restored the activation info (I loaded the backup image onto a fresh format to try it). It seems if Acronis can find and save Ghostsurf's activation, then hopefully someone here should be able to get it figured out too.
  11. After seeing one of the neatest little freeware gems missing from this list, I thought I'd add it. It's been out there for a few years, and is also one of the best "use it everyday" freeware pg's I've had. Folderbox1.2 by BAxBEx
  12. I used Dantz Retrospect to back everything up--it didn't work for Ghostsurf though. I thought about trying Acronis TI8, but it may be the same thing, and I hate to use up activations. I used Installrite on a couple programs where the reg. info was nowhere to be found--loaded the program, added the registration info, then made the .exe. They worked well. I may try that with Ghostsurf--load it with Installrite, activate it, then make the .exe--unless someone has already "been there--done that".
  13. I used /VERYSILENT which worked fine. I do however, have two critical questions--where is the registration info hidden at, and even more important, where is the activation code buried at? I looked through the registry until I was seeing double. Can it be re-activated without going to Tenebril?
  14. OK. finally got it. I think it was not having all the files from the extracted .exe put in the same place...to Totoymola--you asked what version I was using, and I replied "the latest"--sorry about that... what I SHOULD have said was 4.1.100.1332.
  15. That's the exact one I used, except I changed the name to TM.msi. I get different messages depending on how I use switches. Sometimes, it'll say it can't find the file on C:. I do get one small popup window that shows "required switches" and "optional switches" like /qn, etc. They showed something like "/package/i/whatever.msi" in the "required" section?? Didn't look like any switches I've seen before, but I probably looked at it wrong. I'll get it figured out eventually, as I don't want to have to click "next".
  16. Thanks for the replies. I'm using the latest version of Pccillin, and yes, I tried that switch too. I renamed everything to eliminate spaces also. The main .exe was extracted, which left me with both an .msi and setup.exe--I tried the .msi stored in the Installer folder too. Regardless of which setup file or switches used, I get the ever popular "next" / "cancel" window. . I noticed that the end of the switch is different in a couple places in the forum--some end with "noreboot", while others have "REBOOT=supress"?--(and some of those have suppress with 2 p's) Which is best?, or does it matter? The rest of my programs load like they're supposed to--except for Pccillin...figures. Thanks again. (running XP pro/sp2)
  17. By way of a batch file,I can get Pccillin to install using either the .msi or .exe. For some reason though, I can't get it to install without getting the "click next" window. I've tried every combo of switches from \qn on up. What minor detail am I overlooking, as it's not unattended if I have to mess with it. Thanks.
  18. Something's not quite right, but Im not sure just what. I DL'ed the latest driverpacks from B.T.S. I extracted them, ran the batch files, put them in %OEM% > 1$ > Drivers > into the root. Setup shows them being loaded in the beginning, but they're not actually being installed--merely loaded into C:\Drivers, which I see after Windows is done installing. (I think RunOnceEx is in the wrong place too, as setup says it can't find it--odd, as one program did in fact load!?). Any guidance will be appreciated (and yes, I've been ransacking the forums for info). Here's the winnt.sif--(The drivers path--I'm not sure about the actual path to the L or M folders). I've seen different winnt.sif examples, but things aren't always listed in the same order--kind of throws one off a bit. It's got to be something insanely simple though. 19. I got the same message on a few different apps. It was my first shot at adding some programs. In my case, it turned out the pathways in my install folder were off. I got that error loading directx9--the cmd.script said "directx9", except the actual folder said "directx". I had left the 9 off, thereby breaking the path-- and it took a couple double takes to see my error...wouldn't be so bad, if I hadn't done the same thing on a few other folders too. I too would like to find more detailed directions on switches and how to apply them--there's a ton of good info here, except it usually leaves me with even more questions. (I'd like to find a guide that's a true step by step walkthrough, but haven't ran across it yet).
