Yea, but I should also notice that Windows 7 Compatibility was pretty useless. Generally software explicitely meant for client systems does not work on servers in compatibility mode either.
-
Bypassing metro that way in Windows Server 2012 (and perhaps in 8 too) has a small issue - you loose access to "Change PC settings", with boot to desktop enabled this setting is gone: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'd prefer Ex7forW8 to get rid of metro.
-
And I also noticed that Server 2012 doesn't include Windows 8 compatibility mode, unlike Server 2008 R2 that does offer Windows 7 compatibility option.

uncheck all 3 checkboxes: Yup, don't want the hot corners - simply uncheck all and they won't bother you anymore. Very simple and doesn't require reboot.

Beta 2 is currently in close testing and is not yet available to the public at large, please stay tuned for updates in the first page of this thread.
-
The developer may officially provide such option in the final version. It is actually possible now, but you are not supposed to do so. Please mind it's still beta with the time bomb so not a good idea to apply it globally for all users.

So far so good, all options working. I want Metro tile (hot corner near the start button) active, as another option for ModernUI tab. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Never does for me. --------------------------- Works perfectly for me, 0 through 10 whatever I choose.. StartIsBack shows the exact desired number of frequently used programs as you set in the menu properties, I guess unless the MFU list gets limited by too many pinned shortcuts in your menu (so the menu gets too tall and can't hold them all)? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- For what? Just open up the menu properties and uncheck all hot corners; after doing that, there's no way to get to chatms unless you accidentally hit Win-C. --------------------------------------------- If the istructions are strictly followed there are no anomalities as you describe. And no need to reboot, all it takes is to re-log in. How to install: 1. Copy StartIsBack extracted folder to C:\ 2. Click INSTALL_64.reg or INSTALL_32.reg, according to your bitness 3. Logg off 4. Log in How to uninstall: 1. Go to to C:\StartIsBack 2. Click UNINSTALL.reg, both x86 and x64 users 3. Logg off 4. Log in 5. Delete C:\StartIsBack folder -------------------------------------------- The Admin tools appears as a LINK in the right menu column and/or as a folder on all programs list, as you set it in the menu properties (where you want this item to appear).

Ah I see.

That means exactly what it says: rename "Start" to "Apps" to keep only Metro apps there = 1) to substitute word "Start" as you see it on top left in your Metro screen with word "Apps", so that 2) your Metro screen is clean of program shortcuts clutter with only Metro type apps there such as weather, finance, news, cut the rope game, etc. @Tihiy, correct?

I hope moderators will be able to fix this. I think i would prefer Alt+Win (Win+Alt) as it makes most sense and easy to reach. If possible to implement this, I would ask to make user defined keys, one to "Invoke Start Menu" and one to "Launch Metro Screen". Of the options listed, I guess I could use them all. I was going to cast my vote to "Ctr+Clic". Strange it gives me this error,

I haven't spotted any glitches or inconviniencies, all is working very well. Now you needn't hold down shift while right-clicking to pin or unpin an item. I am also using virtual desktops and the start button is displayed fine in each virtual space. So it's cool going. ------------------------------------- I realize it may not be possible to implement these suggestions but anyway what comes desired to me: 1. I'd like a context menu pop-up when I right click ''All Programs" with these lines - ''Open'' and ''Open for all users''. 2. If possible to implement, I'd take another hot corner option to enable the Metro tile at the bottom left desktop corner. 3. It could be a good idea to set up user defined keys for a)start menu and b)metro screen. I just have a little pation for hotkeys. 4. If there is an option to change the start button, there should be one to "Hide start button". Why not? Great! Glad you got it worked out. If you ever figure out a specific culprit, I hope you share. No doubt I will, I'm currently setting up my new account and still trying to figure out that issue. It could be something misconfigured in my gpedit.msc, not sure.

Alrighty, after a long rain dance with lots of verbal incantations, I found out the problem was entirely down to my windows account. I just created new user account and their my menu stays open just fine. I'm also running a couple of 3rd parties alongside without any impact on startisback, which is now working well.

Okey doke, quite a few posts added, don'know how to post mine, gonna be huge below: @Тихому, Most likely you haven't installed it right. Anyway uninstall with reg file, Win+R should be working. And i hope you didn't left Start8/Classic Shell installed. Let's take a lookTry downloading DebugView from sysinternals and post debug log (dbgview running when you open start menu and it closes itself) here or PM. Also try invoking Start menu with Ctrl-Esc. Would you please instruct me how do I proceed with Debug View downloaded from sysinternals, I'm getting this: 00000001 0.00000000 [3520] popup = 0000000000000000 00000002 1.69646263 [3520] popup = 0000000000000000 00000003 4.73416519 [3520] popup = 0000000000000000 00000004 8.26265621 [3520] popup = 0000000000000000 00000005 124.57493591 [3520] popup = 0000000000000000 00000006 124.57753754 [3520] wrapped resolver 00000007 129.21714783 [3520] popup = 0000000000000000 00000008 145.44047546 [3520] popup = 0000000000000000 00000009 147.79969788 [3520] popup = 0000000000000000 00000010 150.09727478 [3520] popup = 0000000000000000 And by the way, just to make sure: I installed it by only clicking 'INSTALL_X64', without touching the X86 reg file, right? @ISOHaven, I doubt if Server 2012 is the problem, unless it is only in combination with something else. Server 2012 runs fine with both his solutions. I've tested new installs, new installs that have been running for a month now and installs that were upgraded from R2 that are a few years old now. No issues. Ok, I wonder are you in the built-in user account or not? Could this be due to the fact I'm not using the built-in account (which is admin type though)? @maxtorix, Wow, it's the nicest 8 I've seen so far? how did you get that awsome blur?! Thanks. @itoy, your instll path is wrong copy the “Startisback” to C:\ I too recommend 'Startisback' on C, mine is on C. However, you can change the path if you edit this line in the reg file @="C:\\StartIsBack\\StartIsBack64.dll". But mind there has to be 2 slashes \\ or it won't work. Just copy as is on C. ------------------------- Thank You for all your replies Folks, much appreciated.

Right click > New > Crete shortcut --- what do I paste in here to make a shortcut that would launch Metro?

Upgraded to betaone, thanks for those cool improvement in 'advanced' tab. I'm not having the trouble of the menu closing on it's own. I hovered in one place (over start menu button, over other areas of start menu) for ten seconds without it doing that. Do you have any third-party mouse driver or mouse-related software? No, of the drivers I only have catalyst and realtek, that's it. I also made sure to shut down any third-party tools which in my pc is only classic shell and its service and reboot. Same annoyance again and only with startisback for some weird reason: - the start menu closes on its own after I stop moving mouse for 1 second; - if I open the start menu and quickly hit and hold 'shift' or 'control', the menu stays open for as long as I need it; - tried everything that came to my mind as well as advanced and modern UI options in the config menu, and no luck still. I haven't spotted any bugs except for that awful one. ::sad I must mention my windows is server 2012, but I've seen other folks with startisback on their servers fine. Or could server 2012 be the problem?

Why does the menu close on its own after you stop mouse for a second, what if you need more time to choose a program? That way it screws up the whole idea of a Start Menu. Other than that it works perfectly well. I don't mind error pop ups on first run of configtool.exe, error "can't obtain data..." show up only once or twice so no biggy. Can I suggest to update the first post when StartIsBack gets updated?
-
Thanks for your reply, @xpclient. Still it would be great if clicking on 'All Programs' would expand to the entire start menu area instead of cascading, optionally, like this, all handy in one pane and witb lots of space, very elegant: Cascades are great, but adding variety is always a big plus. As for why not choosing other projects like Start8, I very much like the speed and the stability of classic shell, it's really handy. I'm using it in 8 with a hotkey to invoke and without a start button at all. If I end its process in device manager, it doesn't stop working unlike others' menus that fail. Classic Shell pops-up instantly and even offers me sounds, as well as tons of customizations - unlike other start projects. Good, fast and customizable search, bugs free, so why should I switch to Start8? Oh, and not the least, classic shell is free.

Thanks for the bug report! Did you notify the author? Maybe he will fix it. Has anybody else experienced this issue? --JorgeA I did, I reported the bug and suggested a few options, but the author wouldn't reply. If your Windows 8 is on drive other than C, you'll see what I mean, Wentutu can't see other drives.

===> http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/microsoft/how-to-install-windows-media-center-in-windows-8-pro-rtm.asp ------------------------------------------------------------------------ What I truly hate is the lack of shadows on my running windows, it makes their borders less visible and thus rather inconvinient. Even Windows XP style was better. Using both 7 & 8.
-
I like Classic Shell very much and I use it a lot in my both Windows 7 and 8. I'm dissapointed to hear that there won't be non-cascading all programs and search, why not? True that cascading menus was distinguishing factor in Classic Shell - but it was before Windows 8 RTM. Now it's a good idea to bring back the functionality of non-cascading start menu. Why, because it's more compact and handy and saves desk space which is quite useful sometimes. Both search results as well as all programs list could take both panes of the start menu, left and right, this way it would give user enough space (almost as much as cascades do), and thus it would be different from the original 7 start menu. Why do I prefer Classic Shell overall, because it's very stable, fast, and does the job.

Wentutu Start Menu has a serious bug with 'All Programs' list if your Windows 8 root drive is other than C. My Windows 7 is on drive C, my Windows 8 is on drive D; I've installed Wentutu on Win8 and it shows me 'All Programs' from my Windows 7. And I don't like Wentutu menu start button.

My deep impression Windows 8 is not without merits but it was built primarily for tablets with tablets in mind. Weird indeed they took so much additional effort to close many features that did fit desktop well. Why not leaving the start menu and fully functional aero, maybe off by default but with an option to turn them on? I wouldn't stop using metro anyway, there are cool things for desktop users too so why fear it won't be used? As if they wanted windows 8 to be less popular among desktop users, or as if they did so to later reintroduce those features in Windows 9 in a couple of years so users truly appreciate it. On the other hand, why giving so much attention to Metro? I'm sure that touch screens will never be as widespread as desktops, because there is no way touch screen interface can be faster or more convenient than a good mouse and a keyboard. Bit by bit they should upgrade aero dwm fixing bugs and adding more customizations such as separate colors for borders/task bar/start menu. Microsoft dwm should be getting improvements with each new windows version, but unfortunately it was actually downgraded in Windows 8.

Eset Smart Security has never betrayed me, instantly catches viruses, blocks harmful pages, and it's easy on resources. No blue screens. One drawback it's commercial soft. Of the freeware I use in my virtual machines is Comodo Internet Security, it's good but takes time to play with its settings to lower user interaction to a minimum. No blue screens either. One drawback is it doesn't update AV defs as often as for example Eset does.

I thank @Tihiy for the excellent work, impressive, and just as many I'm looking forward to a more mature version without the time bomb and bugs free. My constructive wishes: 1. The Start Menu should not disable any metro features, or should only disable them optionally. I personally want to be able to use metro sometimes with all its shortcuts and its search function available. 2. Option to choose the Start Orbit function, as well as hotkeys Win, Ctr-Esc, so they launch either Start Menu or the Metro Screen. 3. Full featured installer/uninstaller and configuration tool. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It would be splendid to get Flip3D back as well, perhaps your next project? Thanks again for making Windows 8 better.
