For some reason, a lot of these packs will not download for me. I don't know if it's because I'm using a customized HOSTS file or what. However, some of them WILL download. ???

This method works! Thanks! Using Windows XP with SP2 - Corp. Edition. Procedure: 1. I copied the contents of the entire CD to a directory named G:\XPCD . 2. I used NLite to remove the IDE drivers from G:\XPCD . 3. I integrated BTS's driverpacks, as well as the user created TV packs and my own packs, included MassStorage, using Method 1 to G:\XPCD . 4. Using Notepad, I edited TXTSETUP.SIF & DOSNET.INF . I deleted all references to 'NVRAID' and 'NVATABUS' that BTS's driverpacks had inserted. This also included deleting the HWID (Hard Ware IDs) references. 5. Using the instructions outlined on the first post of this thread, I copied filed FROM the 'Legacy' folder to the 'Sata' folder. In addition, I copied the contents of the 'SmBus' folder to the 'Sata' folder. Version number : v6.70 . 6. Using NLite, I 'added' drivers. All I did was point NLite to the 'Sata' folder that contained the files from both the 'Legacy' and the 'SmBus' folders. 6a. If you re-check the DOSNET.INF & TXTSETUP.INF files with Notepad, then you'll see how and what NLite interjects in order to make the nForce 4 drivers work. (Example, you'll see : d1,nvraid.sys ....as well as... d9,nvraid.sys and what not ...) 7. After all of this, I added RyanVM's updatepack as well as several other updatepacks using RyanVm's integrator. (I'm not sure if this was in the right order, but it does in fact work.) Thanks again. I can now boot my father in law's NF4 computer with only this CD.

Reducing the source makes sense if say, you're installing Windows XP or 2000 on a customized Carputer or something like that. In the regard, however, it makes much more sense to modify an xbox with a mod chip, put XBMC as the dashboard and go from there. Regular xboxs are like $150, an upgraded HD will run around $100 depending on size, the modchip is like $65. With a few LCD screens, you can make something that'll really pimp your ride. And you'll be able to watch .mkv, .avi, .qt, or whatever. You can always upgrade the HD on an xbox. I knew a friend in high school that put a PC in his Blazer (early to mid 1990s) just so he could interface his sound card to his stereo system so he can play Mp3s. Now, there are factory CD players that play Mp3s from the CD itself. To me it makes more sense to have a stable system, regardless of size or speed. A fast system is nice, but it has to be fast for a purpose. What is the purpose of a fast system ? 90% of the people will respond : "To game." I understand that. But even there, there are fanactics that want every last .005 FPS they can get. Me ? I want the most stable, and within stability, the fastest system I can get in order to FRAG people. Upgrading drivers is the quickest way to gain performance and stability. But the drivers depend on the OS to function. I think people translate a faster OS into more FPS. I want my OS to be quick, responsive, protected and uptodate -- this is the cornerstone upon which all else depends (well, except for the hardware). That's why I use HFSLIP, RyanVM's stuff, and BTS's driverpacks. I want to be able to have one CD or one DVD that has all the hotfixes and drivers already on it to help those that I know who are in no way computer savvy.

I know there is a huge hotfix package available on 'another' site. Is it against MSFN policy for users to make available their collection of 'private' hotfixes ? Would it be better if people uploaded their contributions to rapidshare or megaupload ? If people really take a liking to my suggestion, and if it is not against any MSFN policies, I would recommend that people describe the KB#'s inside their uploads ( to minimize redundant downloads ) within their replies to this topic. As I undertand things, Hfslip is THE way to go for hotfix installation. This is why I'm creating this thread within the hfslip sub-forum. On MSFN, there is a thread for the well-known, and publically available from Microsoft, hotfixes. (a very good thing.) What I am suggesting is the creation of a thread ( or a topic as the Admin sees fit ) for those hotfixes that you have to call Microsoft in order to obtain. Personally, I would like to see such a thing. But if the moderators or admin oppose such an idea, then hey ... in the end it was only a suggestion. I will begin breaking down the hotfixes released by that 'other' site into smaller sized chunks. I know that Ryanvm and other members of Ryanvm's forums have collected a bunch of hotfixes. It'd be great if they got in on this. For this reason, it'd be awesome if either hfslip itself, or another program that someone could write (which hfslip would in turn call), would use the latest version of duplicate filenames and/or hotfixes. STEP FOUR. Download and prepare the hotfixes to be slipstreamed. Save all of the following to the HF folder, which can take Type 1 and Type 2 Hotfixes. Do not rename the files. (However, it is ok to put a prefix to the filename in case you want to segregate some hotfixes.) If you don't see a hotfix listed here but you know about it, don't worry, just go and get it!! Without getting overly complex about it, if a hotfix was issued after August 2005, you should download it, because it will be useful. HFSLIP is smart software... it will slipstream only the latest binaries into your source.

If Hotfix X-v1, X-v2, X-v3 are present will X-v3 prevail ? In other words ... If hotfix 123 is later replaced by hotfix 456, will hfslip overwrite the contents extracted from 123 with the newer contents from 456 ? In other words again ... Is this statement true, "Those who wish to put every post-windows-xp-sp2 hotfix on the internet inside their HF folder, without examining each and every hotfix for the lastest version number CAN do so because hfslip will always use, in the end, the latest version number of each file within a hotfix. An example : If you have the Cumulative Windows Internet Explorer Hotfix from February 2005 inside the HF folder along with the newer Cumulative Windows Internet Explorer hotfix from August 2005, then hfslip will extract both versions of the same hotfix, but will ultimately use the latest one."

Whoops. Ok, ok, ok. What I'll do is rename them with the structure of WINDOWSXP-KBXXXXX.EXE Sometimes, It'll even be WINDOWSXP-KBXXXXX-V2.EXE or even WINDOWSXP-KBXXXX-V5-X86.EXE. P.S. On a side note, I came across some hotfixes that some guy extracted and re-packaged using 7-zip (I suppose because there is suppost to be a special way of installing them with special switches?) I know they aren't standard hotfixes, since they've been tampered with, but do you think HFSLIP can handle these "special exceptions?" If you want to keep HFSLIP "pure," then I'll understand. Just lettin' you know what I've seen. It's really no big deal if you don't decide to implement this, but it does give more options with those special switch circumstances. I really don't know enough about all of this to be even making a request, so if you reply with just a then I'll understand.

Just for the heck of it, I did it. Procedure: Started with Sp2. Integrating all of BTS's Driverpacks, method 3, then integrated that hulking hotfix pack, along with the codecs I posted earlier using hfslip. after it was done, i xpsized the entire thing (patched i386 files). got somekind of error on first boot with medctrro.exe ... dunno what that is. prolly driverpack related. That's because I had to download several codec packs in order to find individual files, in particular DirectVobSub.cpl . That paricular file was found inside of a codec pack that a msfn member created. It can be found in this thread here ( http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=14614 ) . On a side note, I found some of the codecs in question inside my Xbox Media Center folder. After copying the greater majority of codecs from the K-Lite Mega Codec pack v1.38, I saw that DirectVoBSub.cpl was inside Unattended Codec-Pack v1.7 . So I copy 'n pasted the contents of the Unattended Codec Pack v1.7 folder to my HFEXPERT \ CODECS folder . When I was asked to overwrite a file, I would check the date and file size of whatever filename popped up. When I saw that the Unattended Codec Pack v1.7 files were newer than those I found on my machine, I overwrote them so that only the newest files would be present. But since I copied and pasted the entire contents of the Unattended Codec-Pack v1.7, I also copied those particular codecs inside the HFEXPERT \ CODECS folder that TommyP didn't mention. Messy ? Yes. But I figure that people would just delete the unwanted codecs.

Is it possible to integrate a .CAB file downloaded from RyanVm's site ? I'm not talking about using HFSLIP to integrate his update packs -- that would be just plain silly. If you take a look here, http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=7 , you'll see what I'm talking about. For a particular example, what about Kels Uber Addons Pack v2.3 ? It comes as a .CAB file. The question : If I were to put Kels_uber_addons_pack_v2.3C.cab inside the HFCABS folder, would HFSLIP integrate it - or should I just stick with that integrator that Siginet made ? The point is that I want one program HFS to handle it all - if possible. Thanks!

You guys are awesome. Thanks for the responses! On a sidenote, I don't see what the big deal is. People have been using RyanVm's update pack for a long time now -- without much grumbling. What would happen if M$ issued a similar warning about RyanVm's update packs ? Like I said before, the main reason that I'm looking at that huge hotfix pack is because RyanVm is going to discontinue support for machine-specific hotfixes. However, RyanVm is not against the idea of some other person taking over the collection and the maintaining of the machine-specific hotfixes... it's just that HE himself is no longer going to do it. Another reason for using hfslip is so that people do not have to wait for other people, such as RyanVm, to release updatepacks. It's far easier to slipstream hotfixes on-the-fly as hotfixes are released rather than wait. However, the disadvantage that micro$oft and others are pointing out are that there is NO pre-testing on how the hotfixes will interact with one another. However, if you read *cough*theh0tfix's*cough* forums, you'll get a general idea -- BUT since hotfixes are machine specific, there is no guarantee what will work for one person will in fact work for another -- since the machines that the hotfixes are being installed on are indeed very different. Yet, it seems that even micro$oft itself cannot fully test how CRITICAL hotfixes will impact every single system in existence. A prime example is here : http://msfn.org/comments.php?shownews=14828 . This is why I take advice from micro$oft with a grain of salt. If THEY can't get it right, and THEY are the ones making the hotfixes, then who are THEY to advise ME ?
