  1. Not sure what youre trying to accomplish by extracting acpi.sys from the cab file, but the message suggest the driver isnt being loaded because it doesnt detect that ACPI is supported. You updated the BIOS, but did you check to see if there was a BIOS setting to specifically enable ACPI? What are your full system specs?
  2. I think I remember seeing some drives that have a "master - one drive only" and "master - slave present" jumper settings. What is the make and model of your older hard drive?
  3. Your other computers cant access the connection because the computer you do have the modem plugged into isnt acting as a router. You could still do it with the USB modem, but all it does is needlessly complicate things for you, and its a waste of a perfectly good broadband router which you already have. Take the USB modem back and exchange it for one with an ethernet interface if possible. If you want to seamlessly share the connection amongst all the computers you have hooked to the router, then the ethernet version is what you want (just plug into the WAN port on the router).
  4. From what Ive read the UT versions are able to overclock higher than the Infinity versions. The UT version is also advertises Japanese capacitors, which are regarded as the best AFAIK.
  5. Can I get a link? Ive always wanted to be able to save to jpg and png from mspaint.
  6. Cable select might be better in a situation where drives are constantly being moved around. Other than that, I cant see how one would be any better than the other. If you still want more info you could read this short article.
  7. Take a look at this and scroll down to the 3rd pic. You might have to take the CD drives out of the case to get a good look at them.
  8. Sounds like you need to check the jumper settings on the CD drives. If you want to have two IDE devices on one channel you have two options: 1. jumper one device to "master" and one to "slave" 2. jumper both to "cable select"
  9. Your CPU temp is fine. If you want to reduce noise levels you first have to find out where the noise is coming from. Likely its one of your case fans or the fan on the CPU heatsink. You might need to turn down their rotational speed to reduce noise if you have that ability. If you cant reduce the speed of the fans, then you might want to look at some silent after-market fans. You need to boot into DOS before you can run maxblast, but I wouldnt worry about it anyway since the windows installation will let you partition and format the disk. Hookup your DVD drive then go into BIOS and set it (the DVD drive) as the first boot device, and make sure your maxtor hard drive comes after the DVD drive. At this point you should be able to boot from a windows CD and start the install. Nice specs BTW
  10. They sound interesing but according to that link the largest available is only 60mm.
  11. If you go and spend $100 on a new motherboard for no other reason than to enable AGP 8x, you are going to be very dissapointed. On my 9600xt enabling AGP 8x increases my FPS by less than 1 (CS Source @1024x768). I just leave it at 4x for sake of stability.
  12. Putting a UPS between the computer and the wall outlet will not help the situation you are describing. You have to reduce the amount of power you are drawing from the circuit, and putting a UPS in will not lower the power draw. It should let the computer stay running while you go reset the breaker, but that is about all it will accomplish. LCD monitors do not use a significant amount of power either (probably 40-75 Watts when in use). You need to find something that uses several hundred watts or more, and move it to another circuit. What amperage are youre fuses/breakers? Standard 15 Amp?
  13. If your blowing a fuse or tripping a breaker in the building's electrical box, that means you are trying to draw too much power from the circuit. Disconnecting the CD and DVD drives isnt going to help you either, because the amount of power those particular components require isnt all that significant when compared with the rest of the system as a whole. You need to go after much bigger fish. What other devices are plugged into the same electrical outlet or nearby outlets (be as specific as possible)? By the sounds of it you have to move some loads onto another circuit, and simply changing to a nearby outlet does not gaurantee that it will be on a different circuit.
  14. The SATA or SATA I interface transfers data ~150MB/s and SATA II at ~300MB/s. Dont let this spec fool you though, because it is just the interface. There is no hard drive yet available that can choke a SATA I interface, so on the drives themselves SATA I/II doesnt really matter yet. If you are getting a new motherboard, I would strongly recommend you get one with SATA II so you can upgrade to faster drives down the road.
  15. If you dont have any USB devices hooked up to the computers, you could simply disable USB in BIOS.
  16. I REALLY (cant emphasize the "really" part enough) dont think 2x80mm fans are going to move enough air through the case, unless maybe you are using something goofy like the vantec tornado. Considering that, the temps youre getting seem about right. Now that you moved to watercooling for the CPU, what is the model # of the TT system you picked up? Where is the radiator exhausting the hot air to?
  17. As long as the new board supports the p4 630 CPU, yes. What is the make and model of the motherboard you want to use?
  18. Could you try to explain what happens when you try to install 98se now?
  19. Yes, but no. The response times the manufacturers are advertising only represent grey to grey. Changing to two completely different colours takes a lot longer.
  20. 9x doesnt need SATA drivers during install like 2K and XP do. What happened when you tried to install 98se? Post full system specs if you are still having problems.
  21. I would normally agree about not adding things like this, BUT I think most would agree that the ability to read NTFS from 9x deserves to be one of the few exceptions to the rule. I think it should be added as another optional component of the service pack installer.
  22. Yes, nero can burn bootable CDs. Ive done it many times myself using floppy emulation.
  23. If you have to buy a new motherboard and CPU dont bother sticking with socket A.
  24. He is talking about s754...there are no venice core A64s. The palermo core (sempron) AFAIK is basically the s754 equivalent of the venice, and should run cooler and OC a lot better than the old newcastle core A64s. What motherboard is it? If your motherboard is made for overclocking and you plan on taking advantage of it, I would go for the sempron. But, if you are just going to be running the CPU at stock speed the A64 is going to be a bit faster because of the 200MHz core speed advantage and double the L2 cache.
  25. Maybe check the BIOS to see if power management settings might be set a little too aggressive?
