My Browser Builds (Part 1)
DanR20 replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
There is some occasional audio choppiness that I'm getting with the built-in decoder. I chalked it up to the typically horrible Road Runner connection but if it's the codec it's still far better than plugin-container, which I have always found to be far worse and unreliable. There's a huge playback difference between the two decoders with some other sites besides youtube. This one for example: https://globalnews.ca/ The prime time plugin is unbelievably choppy and unusable while the built-in decoder renders smoothly. It probably comes down to each person's system configuration and the processing power of their computer. -

For Moebius to get Primetime working, in addition to the prefs that have to be added in along with the gmp-eme-adobe folder there's a couple of obscure prefs that have to be changed back. Apparently even when copying over the profile from UXP to Moebius they're automatically given new values: media.gmp.decoder.aac media.gmp.decoder.h264 Change these from 0 to 2. Primetime instructions: https://msfn.org/board/topic/175591-enable-mp4-h264-aac-html5-video-in-firefox-on-windows-xp-without-flash/ Fortunately for me the built-in decoder works fine and is much preferable to using the buggy plugin-container.exe but it's an extra option to have just in case. -

Thanks to Roy for restoring container tabs in UXP, it saves me the trouble of opening another browser but on a side note their temporary removal did get me to try out the moebius version and now I've got two nice running browsers to play around with. --:) -

Currently running Roy's moebius build from last Saturday and all four of my webextensions are disabled, with no option to enable. Is there a setting in about:config I'm missing? This supports the container tabs extension so it would make a good backup when I need it. Edit: ok reinstalled them and now they're back, so that's good news. I'm actually using this version on W2k at the moment and it handles nicely. -

@Ruan, my understanding, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong is that Serpent/moebius is based on a newer version of firefox, 55 or 56 while uxp is 52esr. I can't use moebius since they ripped out webextensions. Roy restored that feature in uxp and it works good so I'm staying with it. -

@Mathwiz, 60esr is nice in some ways but its limitations that you mentioned keep me from using it as the primary browser. Found this today regarding the Multi-Account Containers addon: "Unfortunately due to how ESR works we couldn't continue it's development to work there as we have been adding many APIs. The extension will work in 53 and the next 59 ESR. (We have an outstanding bug to fix the version number minimum, sorry about that)." https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/reviews/920351/ Those who ripped container tabs out of basilisk must have known this and why they referenced MultiFox, even though it's buggy and not ready for prime time. Unfortunately, there is no perfect browser since everyone has their own ideas of how it should it work. Thankfully, Roy is restoring some of these lost features but I understand that can't go on forever as there's only so much work one person can take on. -

Wish they would stop arbitrarily removing useful features but if you can restore this one without a lot of extra work that would be great. If not there's always 52 or 60esr but for me it's mainly the convenience of having it in the browser you're using most of the time. -

That's a matter of opinion and I'll grant you 60esr isn't bad, I just installed infocatcher's Private Tab addon on it and it works great. But does it get things done in comparison to the older legacy versions: no because so many other useful legacy addons are non-functional. -

They're useful if you want to sign into different accounts at the same site at the same time, or to prevent possible tracking. I only recently started making use of them myself and hate to see them removed so unceremoniously but like you said, many probably don't even know the feature exists. -

That's a very nice addon by Infocatcher, thanks VL for telling me about it. It's not quite the same as container tabs, it's basically a private window in a tab instead but it's so much nicer and convenient than opening it up in a window. Lots of options too; I like being able to easily toggle between a regular tab and a private one. Definitely a keeper. Container tabs have a different function in the way they keep cookies and history separated between the tabs. Maybe Roy can bring that back too the way he did webextensions? Don't want to push our luck on this but I wish the main guys would stop removing useful features, you'd think they were Mozilla or something. -

All one has to do is look at Quantum to know how true that statement is. It's one of the main reasons for using forks like basilisk in the first place. -

Was hoping that MultiFox would be a good alternative but it's got obvious bugs. One is that noscript breaks when opening a new profile in a new window, at least with google voice. I'll keep playing around with it but it's not as straightforward as container tabs. The other option is private windows, that is until that gets cleaned up too. I'm afraid if they keep doing that there will be nothing left of the browser and no reason to use it. -

DanR20 replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Thanks, I missed that in the changelog. Curious, what exactly were they "cleaning up"? Container tabs worked good and were useful. It wouldn't be a problem if the addon could replace them but it isn't functional and I tried all their versions. So I guess for container tabs I'll have to use 52esr. -

DanR20 replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Is anyone missing new container tabs from the File menu? Up until the latest uxp build they were there and I've been using them right along but now the option is gone. The "privacy.userContext.enabled" and "privacy.userContext.ui.enabled' prefs are set to true and they're working in 52esr so I'm guessing it's something specific to Basilisk. I tried installing the Multi-Account Containers addon but all it gives me is a thin line down below the toolbar button and nothing else. -

Same problem for me on eBay; it's especially bad when trying to scroll on certain parts of the page, it can sometimes stick for 30 seconds or more before resuming. Many sites today are script-intensive and it appears overwhelming at times, even for the most up to date browsers. -

Just tested the av1 demo in UXP for XP and it played, yay. The I tried it with a freshly downloaded 67.0 nightly and got an error message that the browser doesn't support av1 playback, please upgrade to 67.0 This is with media.av1.enabled and media.mediasource.webm.enabled" both set to true as with UXP. What a waste of time it is with the "new" Mozilla firefox, think I'll just stick to these older versions, they work better. -

So would this mean you could carry on with the weekly UXP updates? -
My Browser Builds (Part 1)
DanR20 replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Wouldn't it be just a matter of changing the name? That seems to be one of the complaints. There would be no more weekly updates, we'd have to wait until the official release for any bug fixes etc. to be applied by the sound of it. Hopefully just bumps in the road rather than killing what are obviously better builds than their releases. That's probably what's eating at them. -

Moonchild takes the position that legacy addons no longer need to be updated since they will always work in their browsers. That may be true for the most part but not for all of them. Newer addons that are interactive with the site, such as Enhancer for YouTube are constantly being updated for the simple fact that google is forever changing things. Legacy addons that used to do that are now either broken to some extent or completely useless since the developers have abandoned them. And at some point Raymond Hill will end development of legacy uBO, it's just a matter of time. That's why there's a need for webextension support whether most of us like it or not. -

All extensions working well for me on Win 7 and XP in the latest build. Thanks again to Roy for reverting the unnecessary changes. As I said earlier in the thread these versions of basilisk are what Firefox 52.9 should have been. -

DanR20 replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
@Sampei.Nihira, and Mozilla said the opposite: they had to remove legacy because of security. I would imagine they both have issues but I've yet to hear many stories of where firefox has been compromised from addons, legacy or we. If it were a widespread problem then the argument can be made for changes otherwise it becomes unnecessary disruptions. @Mathwiz, I agree, legacy is dead in terms of development, their use comes in the ability to keep installing the old ones in browsers like basilisk but all of the energy today is with we and it's going to stay that way. -
My Browser Builds (Part 1)
DanR20 replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Why are they so determined to take that out? Why not just let it be and not maintain it? Don't see how that would affect performance but thanks for keeping it in, at this point we need both because legacy addons are no longer in development. -
My Browser Builds (Part 1)
DanR20 replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
That's good news though since Roy kept it in after it was removed from the nightly. I guess he can tell us himself what the future of webextensions is for UXP but like everyone else has said hopefully the code can be maintained for it. -
My Browser Builds (Part 1)
DanR20 replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Wasn't webextension support removed several weeks ago and Roy decided to keep it in the UXP builds? Hope so because there are no working alternatives for the ones I have. They're all youtube-based that set video resolution and other options so it's probably possible to use scripts but these addons work well and are convenient. -
