  1. Dave-H - thanks for good double-check list! Yes, Belarc Advisor now shows that I have all. It still amazes me that, each month, we need to install both the IE8 update and (in my case with Office 2003) the Office Compatibility updates to make WU-MU calm down and stop annoying the CPU. What's the danged connection anyway? And if WU-MU/yellow shield get so hot and bothered when they're missing, then why don't WU-MU/yellow shield just SAY SO and pull the updates out of MS so we don't have to go looking for them all over town? Is this any way to run an airline?
  2. den - thanks - installed these last three, and looks like they worked! I had missed that part of bersaglio's list and also your quote box just above didn't show on my other browser at work. Well, this month was something! Thanks! See you next month!
  3. SD73 - no - I am the last one to ask. You are only second-to-last. Den - the three "Missing Updates" I cite above are all dated 1/4/2018 in the MS Update Catalog. Should I install them? And did I miss them being listed earlier in these recent pages? Thanks. And I promise not to tell SD73, so he can graduate to "last one to ask".
  4. dencorso and SD73: I have Office Professional 2003 with the Compatibility Pack. Just ran Belarc and I see these: From "Missing Updates": Q4011201 Unrated Microsoft security advisory (KB4011201) Q4011605 Important Microsoft security update (KB4011605) Q4011607 Critical Microsoft security update (KB4011607) From the huge "Installed" list: Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system KB2526308[SP] on 10/28/2011 (details...) KB2596904 on 5/10/2017 (details...) KB2825645 on 8/17/2015 (details...) KB2984938 on 5/11/2016 (details...) KB3085549 on 12/12/2015 (details...) KB3213641 on 9/12/2017 (details...) 5. Well, I installed the final one for me, KB4056615, which was a bit worrisome from heinoganda's posts. (I did not download it directly from https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=posready. When I rebooted yet again, the yellow shield indicated it was downloaded and ready to install. Go figure.) Good news is that NTKRNLPA.EXE and NTOSKRNL.EXE have now upgraded to version 5.1.2600.7392 (with modification date 12/5/2017). Also: ATMFD.DLL is now version 5.1.2.253 (modified date 12/13/17) NTFS.SYS is also version 5.1.2600.7392 (with modification date 12/5/2017). Bad news is that a svchost, exe continues to use 50% of the CPU (with "Memory Usage" of 228,516 K ). (In the Task Manager processes list, I also see wuauclt.exe with zero use of the CPU but with 199,292 K of Memory Usage. My experience used to be that wuauclt.exe would eventually disappear after a few minutes when it wasn't update time. Is it a clue to the svchost issue?) So, half of my XP frontal cortex has gotten fall-down drunk. What to do?
  6. Update - In my REAL XP machine (with duct tape and dust): This morning, I installed successfully: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4052978) - after first UNinstalling it 2018-01 Security Only Update for .NET Framework 2.0 on WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4054178) 2018-01 Security Only Update for .NET Framework 3.0 on WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4055229) 2018-01 Security Only Update for .NET Framework 4 on WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4054173) I have now ALSO installed KB4056941 (but not KB4056615) and rebooted. However: NTKRNLPA.EXE and NTOSKRNL.EXE are still the prior version 5.1.2600.7259. Was KB4056941 (by itself) supposed to update them? I want to try KB4056615 next, and I said Yes to downloading it in the yellow shield, but nothing is happening, man. The yellow shield download progress has been stuck at 0% for hours. I am also running MU in both Firefox (IE tab) and IE itself to see if it will show up there, but the green progress bar "Checking for the latest updates for your computer ..." has been going for hours without showing any results. It's the worst it's been in a long time. (FYI - yes, I have the magic regedit key.) Meanwhile, a svchost.exe continues to run 50% of my CPU non-stop. This started a few days ago at about the same time the yellow shield first popped up with KB4056615 and KB4056941. Suggestions (besides "Knock it off for the day and go out for a beer," which would be an excellent suggestion) ? Thanks.
  7. Niko and SD73 - When I test-installed KB4056615 and KB4056941 in XP Mode on my Win 7 machine, I got the following results for the two files mentioned by SD73 directly above - matching Dave-H's experience: NTKRNLPA.EXE version 5.1.2600.7392 (matches Dave H's "5.1.2600.7259 to 5.1.2600.7392") NTOSKRNL.EXE version 5.1.2600.7392 (matches Dave H's "5.1.2600.7259 to 5.1.2600.7392") I assume that 5.1.2600.7392 is the correct, newly updated version number, but please say if you think not. (My full post on this a few days ago is http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171814-posready-2009-updates-ported-to-windows-xp-sp3-enu/?do=findComment&comment=1149192 )
  8. Heinoganda, wyxchari and all - First, Avast has micro-updated to 17.9.3761.278 (from 17.9.3761.0). I was able to copy successfully the test file suggested by Heinoganda. So, unless there is still a danger, I shall install the NON-meltdown+spectre updates: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4052978) - actually, I already installed this * 2018-01 Security Only Update for .NET Framework 4 on WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4054173) 2018-01 Security Only Update for .NET Framework 2.0 on WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4054178) 2018-01 Security Only Update for .NET Framework 3.0 on WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4055229) NOT INSTALLING YET (because still dangerous per Heinoganda): KB4056615 and KB4056941 - but see next Nothing to install for the Office 2003 Second, - about the Meltdown+Spectre patches KB4056615 and KB4056941: do I even need them? My XP machine has Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 3.00GHz - Conroe 65nm Technology. That is NOT on the list provided two above by Wyxchari: https://www.techarp.com/guides/complete-list-cpus-meltdown-spectre/ . Also, I protect my XP machine with black duct tape and (in the back) an extra layer of dust. So, should I just hide these two updates? But my CPU apparently does NOT have FSB. FSB is not mentioned anywhere in Speccy or CPU-Z, and SIW says "FSB - Not available". Wyxchari - what do you think? Third, since the yellow shield appeared a few days ago asking me to install the two dangerous KB4056615 and KB4056941 (which I have NOT installed), my CPU has been running at 50% non-stop. A single svchost.exe has been doing this, and I don't know why. Even * installing Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4052978) and rebooting has NOT helped. However, I installed that * Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4052978) while I still had the bad Avast 17.9.3761.0. Maybe the bad Avast prevented a good installation. So maybe I should now UNinstall this KB4052978 and REinstall it. How do I UNinstall KB4052978? And, specifically, how do I UNinstall it so that the machine will let me REinstall it? Thanks, all. Special thanks to Heinoganda for patience!
  9. Thanks to experts here, it all makes sense. Subject to anyone pulling me back from edge of cliff, on my XP with Office 2003 and (for the moment) trouble-causing Avast, I shall be installing only: First, manually: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4052978) Then, using the shield or MU: 2018-01 Security Only Update for .NET Framework 4 on WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4054173) 2018-01 Security Only Update for .NET Framework 2.0 on WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4054178) 2018-01 Security Only Update for .NET Framework 3.0 on WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4055229) NOT INSTALLING YET (due to Avast file-copy problems clarified by heinoganda): KB4056615 and KB4056941 Nothing to install for the Office 2003 But ... I wouldn't MIND if everyone else went FIRST and let me know if it's ... safe. HEY - does the Avast annoyance interfere with the good updates (my first four above)? Heinoganda - what do you think?
  10. The last two or three pages here are so advanced, I'm embarrassed to post the following. Anyway, just FYI and mostly to heinoganda and Dave H: On my Dell Optiplex 7010 MT with Intel Core i5 3470 @ 3.20GHz and Win 7 Pro 64-bit, I started XP Mode, updated its Avast to the bad 17.9.3761.0, updated its Malwarebytes, installed some missing Microsoft Updates BEFORE the dangerous KB4056615 and KB4056941, rebooted, and then ran the dangerous KB4056615 and KB4056941 and rebooted. Well, XP Mode reboots well - no BSOD so far. Also, my XP Mode HAS the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat with name cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc and value 0. (But I checked for that key only after installing the dangerous KB4056615 and KB4056941.) HOWEVER, to run Heinoganda's copy-file test, I just downloaded the MalwareBytes setup file "mb3-setup-SEMFD.100SEM-3.1.2.1733-1.0.139-1.0.2060.exe" and copied it to another folder on the XP Mode C:\ drive. Again, the copying process DOES NOT COMPLETE, and I cannot delete that MalwareBytes setup file from either the source folder or the target folder because it is "in use". So the bad Avast version is still bad. Caveat - my XP Mode does not have any version of Office and I have never set up its Outlook Express. So this is not the same as running the dangerous KB4056615 and KB4056941 on my real XP Machine, which I am NOT doing for now. EDIT - after all of the above - in the XP Mode - I see the following versions of these files: ATMFD.DLL version 5.1.2.253 (matches Dave H's "5.1 Build 252 to 5.1 Build 253") NTKRNLPA.EXE version 5.1.2600.7392 (matches Dave H's "5.1.2600.7259 to 5.1.2600.7392") NTOSKRNL.EXE version 5.1.2600.7392 (matches Dave H's "5.1.2600.7259 to 5.1.2600.7392") NTKRPAMP.EXE version 5.1.2600.7392 (matches Dave H's "5.1.2600.7259 to 5.1.2600.7392") HOWEVER, this updated one appears ONLY in C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386 and C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\7958aec60a800160443c5e556682587b\sp3qfe Everywhere else it appears, it is a preceding version. NTKRNLMP.EXE version 5.1.2600.7392 (matches Dave H's "5.1.2600.7259 to 5.1.2600.7392") HOWEVER, this updated one appears ONLY in the same two folders above as NTKRPAMP.EXE - same story NTFS.SYS version 5.1.2600.7392 (matches Dave H's "5.1.2600.5512 to 5.1.2600.7392 (the former was from 2008!)" ► What do you all think about NTKRPAMP.EXE and NTKRNLMP.EXE. Shouldn't the new versions appear somewhere more interesting, like Windows\System32 ?
  11. Heinoganda - Jetzt verstehe ich ... The copying DOES NOT FINISH. Also, I cannot delete the COPY. Wow! So I shall WAIT before installing KB4056615 and KB4056941. And what does this mean anyway? (Thank you for this warning. But this is ... sehr eigenartig.)
  12. Heinoganda - I just successfully downloaded mb3-setup-SEMFD.100SEM-3.1.2.1733-1.0.139-1.0.2060.exe Just for fun I ran an Avast scan of that file, and the scan completed successfully (clean). So, it might be OK to run KB4056615 and KB4056941 ? Thanks.
  13. Heinoganda - my XP machine has Malwarebytes (Free) since President Carter, and it works for manual scans. Should I download it again?
  14. Heinoganda - You are correct that I have Avast Free on my XP machine (Dell Optiplex 755 desktop), and Avast is now Program version: 17.9.2322 (build 17.9.3761.0). I updated Avast and I'm already fully updated with the above. I have the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat with DWORD 0x0000000) (0) My CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 3.00GHz. The yellow shield is prompting me to install KB4056615 and KB4056941. so ----- DO it or DON'T do it? (Why does that remind me of a high school girlfriend?) Thanks.
  15. Running MS Update just now on my XP machine, I got these two: Well, this time I SHALL be a cowardly lion. Anyway, it's too cold in NYC to run any updates. If anyone is brave (and warm) enough to run these two, please let us know. EDIT - Also, has anyone tried the Firefox update to 52.5.3 ESR? All OK? I'm still co-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-ld. Thanks.
  16. I suppose this is off-topic. Maybe everything I know is off-topic. I watch GIveAwayOfTheDay, and this one might actually be useful. But will it work on XP? https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/spideroak-one-7-0-free-5gb-of-cloud-storage-lifetime-plan/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+giveawayoftheday%2Ffeed+(Giveaway+of+the+Day) Does anyone care to try?
  17. Happy New Year! Thank God for Alka-Seltzer! First Q for the New Year: In the last few days, I created a spreadsheet on a Win 7 machine in Excel 2013 or 2016 (don't remember) and emailed it, But when I re-open the email from my Outlook Express on my XP machine and try to open the spreadsheet attachment in Office 2003, the little window "File conversion in progress ..." never ends; if I hit cancel, I get "Microsoft Office Excel is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action"; then Excel gets stuck; and if I go to Task Manager to End Process for EXCEL.EXE, that works but the process excelcnv.exe continues and cannot be killed. I have to reboot my XP to get rid of it. Great start to the New Year! Is there any connection to the updates we've been installing for the Compatibility Pack? Suggestions? Thanks.
  18. wyxchari - what is "network unit"? Please send me link. (Do you mean mapped drive, so that the entire hard drive of one computer has a mapped drive letter in the other?) Destro - thanks for comment!
  19. In my excellent home network (Workgroup), I have this XP machine on which I am now typing (Dell Optiplex 755), a Dell Optiplex 7010 dual-booting Win 7 Pro 64-bit and Win 10 Pro 64-bit, my wife's iMac and MacBook Pro, my Blackberry, my wife's two iPhones and two iPads, my Kindle, our HP AIO Printer, our DSL modem-router (the "treffpunkt"), my toothbrush and a paper cup with a string through the bottom. Now, when the XP and the Win 10 Pro are both on, they do NOT see each other in Network. Folders designated as "Shared" (yes, with the correct Security settings) don't work in Network, They used to, but an update to the Win 10 stopped that. Lots of folks are complaining about this, not just I. (Shared folders work fine between the XP and the Win 7 and even between the XP and the iMac, but not between the XP and the Win 10.) In the Win 10, if I re-enable SMBv1, it all works again - Shared folders are again visible between the XP and the 10. But SMBv1 is some type of security no-no these days, so ideally we should be able to fix the problem with SMBv1 staying OFF in Win 10. I checked, and the Win 10 does have SMBv2 enabled (and probably SMBv3 because they go together like peanut butter and jelly). So - even though the fault is in the Win 10 and not yet fixed by MS, is there anything I can do in XP that will get the Shares sharing again? Is there an SMBv2/3 for XP? I also tried pouring coffee into that cup, but it dripped all over the dog. Any other suggestions? Thanks.
  20. Mathwiz - you are correct about the Firefox https and mixit's grey boxes. Going to unsecure on FF per your suggestion lets me see what mixit had added. And I also run https everywhere. Thanks. For some reason, here on msfn.org, the page selection and last page buttons are working again. So it will be a good day today!
  21. I also see KB4049068 in the yellow shield. What is it? A 50% CyberMonday discount to upgrade to Vista?
  22. Ok OK - I'm so over-secured that the only thing still working is a manual typewriter and carbon paper. But for my OTHER machines -- "On my wife's important SOHO machine (Win 7 64-bit), we are still using Office 2003. Should any of the recent updates for Office or Compatibility be run manually on her machine?"
  23. mixit - thanks for info. Q - on the thread for XP POS, there are recent links for updating the 2007 Compatibility Pack for Office 2003 on our XP machines. Should I also run those on my wife's Win 7 64-bit machine on which we still have Office 2003 with the Compatibility Pack?
  24. den and mixit - thanks for your patience, After fussing a bit with my Firefox, I am able to see Mixit's insert link only after both (a) importing the certificate for msfn.org and (b) clicking on the lock icon in the address bar, seeing that this page is partially not secure, clicking on the > and hitting "Disable for now". Unfortunately, that last option (the button for "Disable for now") is not available on every page. On this XP machine, I have Firefix ESR 52.5.0 (32-bit). Running FF with Add-ons Disabled didn't help. Only the steps above helped. The normal icons for moving to other pages still don't work unless I right-click and hit Open in New Tab. Why so tough?
  25. Everyone - three things - 1) mixit - your posts show only a grey box where you present useful info. (Just recently at http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171814-posready-2009-updates-ported-to-windows-xp-sp3-enu/?do=findComment&comment=1147450). What should I do to see what you posted? 2) On my wife's important SOHO machine (Win 7 64-bit), we are still using Office 2003. Should any of the recent updates for Office or Compatibility be run manually on her machine? 3) On this my favorite forum, the buttons for INSERT URL (the chain link icon) and >> (go to Last Page) don't work. Also, the buttons for any page (such as "122") don't work. Might 1) and 3) be the result of my having so much security on my Firefox browser that I now need to use a password to go to the loo? (NoScript, Disconnect, BetterPrivacy, AdBlockPlus (actually turned off for this site), CookieMonster, HTTPS Everywhere ...) Thanks.
