  1. Some minor glitches - maybe because my XP has become something of an involuntary hybrid - like my old Erector Sets with gears and pulleys bolted on in all sorts of places that didn't work very well: AFTER running heinoganda's Cert_Updater twice in the recent few days, but BEFORE running any of this week's updates , I see the following on my important duct-taped XP machine: This morning, I rebooted and I see these Errors in Event Viewer - Application: FYI - the last two above re Ci I have had for a long time and have ignored. But what about that Profile stuff? I rebooted because I had ordered a sfc /scanonce, and after the reboot and completion of the sfc /scanonce, Event Viewer shows me the following Errors: followed immediately by: I know that oleaut32.dll was discussed at length in the posts here after February 6, which I did not understand. So I don't know what these Errors mean. Maybe I should replace oleaut32.dll with the editorial page from today's NY Times or a piece of toast? Some incoming emails in my Outlook Express 6 are giving me blank placeholders for graphics and some web sites are giving me some errors that feel like my updated certificates are not right. Or maybe the web sources have old certificates that are now rejected by my PC because I ran Cert_Updater? Separately, in XP Mode on my Win 7 machine (which is my test pit), I ran all this week's updates and the .reg for TLS 1.2 in IE and then ordered a sfc / scanonce and rebooted, and I got the same Event Viewer errors above for oleaut32.dll but in this case the sfc / scanonce progress bar also threw an error message about bad files and asked me to insert the original XP disk (which would take me years to find and I don't even know that XP Mode would "see" the DVD player anyway). Before I run this week's updates on my important duct-taped XP machine (and before I run the TLS 1.2 .reg), what do you think - other than I deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for denuclearizing my bedroom? Thanks.
  2. If I run new update for IE8 KB4230450 that appeared today in the MS Update Catalog, does it include the special update KB4316682 for adding TLS 1.2 that Harkaz is referring to a few posts above at < THIS LINK > ? If your answer is "Yes," should I still also run the registry changes at Harkaz's post? Thanks.
  3. By the way, at the start of the "Properties" of the paypal email, I see this (and I have [deleted] some stuff which might be me): There's a lot more but would be too tiring to sanitize all of it. Anything interesting in what I pasted above?
  4. Mathwiz - many thanks for your concern. You are certainly right, and I did not click anything in the email. I closed the email, made my own way to paypal.com and started poking around. I'll look again tonight from my Win 10 machine because on my XP machine occasionally an icon pops up of Stalin and Mao sipping tea together.
  5. Just confirming an earlier set of posts (now lost?) that sometimes one should run heinoganda's Cert_Updater twice. Only once and I had some certificate issues. Twice seems to do the trick! Danke Danke.
  6. Thanks, Dclem. You may well be right. On FF, I have NoScript, AdBlock Plus, Cookie Monster and BetterPrivacy, most of which are no longer available on later versions of FF for Win 7+. But I don't do my banking on XP anyway. EDIT - On my XP machine in FF, I logged on to Paypal and was able to see all the details of my account fine. Didn't try to do anything. So maybe it's all a nothing. We'll see.
  7. Bersaglio - great idea! Just pretend to be FF 62! But why stop there? Why not say I'm FF 87 so I don't have to do this again? Heck - is there a registry setting to make everyone think my XP machine is really Win 10 version 2376? In which case, why not just throw the XP out the window and use my Win 10? There must be an answer to this question, or we wouldn't be here any more. But since it was posted here in April, we've all forgotten what it was.
  8. Got an email from PayPal that I need to update my browser. On the PayPal website, it says: I use Firefox everywhere, and, on my XP machine, it's ESR version 52.8.1 (32-bit). If I use it to go to PayPal's indicated "sandbox site", Firefox gives me the error page for unsafe page. So my XP's Firefox is unable to read whatever flavor of security PayPal is now using. Do you think the new MS update for TLS 1.2 will help? Or is that irrelevant to the issue? (And how come a smarty-pants "we know more than you" forum like MSFN lost all its posts between February 6 and yesterday? Forgot to back up? Or, in the spirit of XP forever, did someone just print them to a pdf?)
  9. I KNEW when I ran heinoganda's Cert_updater something weird would happen. And guess what! MSFN lost all its brain cells between Feb 6 and now. Didn't I tell you!?
  10. Thomas and Dave-H - With your help, I successfully copied new version 162 into the folder from my recent installation of 152. And "About" says 162! But my life has not changed one iota. Thanks.
  11. Thomas - to get the .gz file, I went to http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/es/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.html?printOnly=1 but it continuously says I'm unauthorized to download. This is after I temporarily permitted all cookies and scripts on the page, etc. What am I doing wrong? SHould I get the .gz file elsewhere? (Meantime, I re-installed earlier version 152.) Thanks.
  12. Thomas S - Many thanks. I'll try later this week. But I am curious - what if I had no Java? What would that do to my life?
  13. Cannot install latest Java - jre-8u161-windows-i586.exe. The installation just stops after a few seconds. I uninstalled the prior version and even tried safe mode, but no luck. And I did the uninstall and tried this full offline download because the normal java update also hadn't been working. So no java anymore? And what will that do anyway?
  14. Delusions? Just because I think my XP machine is a toaster oven? OK - maybe some absent-mindedness. Well, if I get another BSOD, I'll try the uninstall. But why stop there? Why not go back to SP2?
  15. Den and Mcinwwl - You two are just jealous! EDIT - MSE is no longer being updated? MS has advised, "Definition updates (antimvirus/antispryware ) for Microsoft Security Essentials (v.4.4.304.0) on Windows XP will no longer be provided automatically as of July 14, 2015." See ☺ LINK ☻ Unless, of course, you are getting updates from an alternate universe, In which case, please SHARE.
  16. Got a second BSOD this month on my XP - while nothing was happening. (Maybe my machine is just getting bored?) Here's a link to a zip with all the info: <LINK> The immediate culprit seems to be an Avast AV Free driver aswStmXP.sys, which is version 17.9.3754.0, last modified December 21, 2017, 1:06:34 PM. However, with all the recent updates and reg key change instigated by the AV companies for Meltdown and Spectre (what about Smersh and Thrush?) , I wonder whether there isn't a conflict with our recent POS updates. Thoughts? EDITED TO INSERT LINK ABOVE
  17. Bersaglio - thanks. No wonder my XP machine started spewing steam like a humidifier. (Honey, unplug that and hand me a towel.)
  18. Is it next month already? https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=posready
  19. SD73 - I just remembered I have a WD "MyBook" external hard drive plugged into a USB port on the rear of my XP Machine. It is also formatted NTSF. I just successfully copied the same pdf from the XP C:\ drive onto a folder in that WD "MyBook" external hard drive, and it opened in Adobe Reader from that folder. Is this any different from a USB stick? Isn't the WD "MyBook" external hard drive just a very fat and overweight and ugly-looking USB stick? (There's so much dust on that thing it's amazing it still works. Probably hates me. Best to leave it alone.)
  20. SD73 and Den - I just successfully copied a pdf from a folder on the XP to a folder on the Win 7 64-bit. I did that using My Network Places on the XP, and the copying and pasting were done at the XP keyboard. The hard drives of the XP and the Win 7 Pro 64-bit are both NTFS. Do you think this means that I don't have an issue with the KB? Am I free at last? Will this month of January FINALLY COME TO AN END??
  21. SD73 - Thanks. You gave me an idea: I plugged two in and just going to Properties showed that they were formatted FAT32. (Won't reformat them because they have some files I want.) I have other USB sticks and will try this later. However, earlier today, on the XP machine, using My Network, I copied a file from a nearby Win 7 64-bit machine and pasted it into the XP machine, successfully. But that's not the same, is it?
  22. SD73 - dumb tourist question - how can I tell whether a USB stick is formatted NTFS? And not stripes, houndstooth or (heaven forbid) plaid?
  23. Hmmm. I installed KB4056615 without apparent problem, but I did not first make a copy of my NTFS. But I seem to be lucky like Dave-H ... so far. How should I check?
  24. ►► Hahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Don't forget to ... COUNT YOUR CHANGE !!
  25. den - OK, but I need to get you a pilot's hat.
