  1. Mathwiz and someguy25 - On my XP Machine, on my Internet Explorer 8, when I go to Qualys to check whether its TLS 1.2 is working, I can't get to the page. That's at https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/viewMyClient.html. My Internet Options - Advanced shows that TLS 1.2 (and only TLS 1.2) is checked. So, what am I doing wrong? There were some posts here how to enable TLS 1.2 on IE8 on XP - please point me to them again. Thanks.
  2. dencorso writes above, "... my main, day-to-day OS is XP SP3, and I'll cling to it until it becomes nearly impossible to use ,,,," Ah, noble thoughts, but just now SugarSync became impossible to use on XP. It forced an update that throws a kernel error. For details, see < THIS LINK >. (And the fact that den-heino-bersa already gave us TLS 1.2 did not help,) Fortunately, I have free SpiderOak with 5GB capacity through Giveaway of the Day, and I put a copy of the spreadsheet into a folder that's backing up there, but I'm not a big fan of SpiderOak, and the SugarSync was actually my wife's account, so she won't be able to follow along easily any more on the particular spreadsheet I was working on. It's just as well that THE END IS APPROACHING. It's 7 for me VERY VERY SOON. Sorry, gang.
  3. Mcinwwl - I doubt that MS will make it easy for tourists to use someone else's paid updates for XP POS (if MS is even going to provide any in the first place). I wonder whether MS let the POS hack work so far to see what would happen to us - this forum might have been a Petri dish all along. And even if some unknown registry hack would work after April, those of us who are not heinoganda need this board to avoid the traps along the way, such as last month's bad KB4487085. I humbly beseech dencorso, bersaglio, heinoganda and other savants here to lead us into 7 POS in 2020 - that would be very helpful to yours truly!
  4. Mcinwwl - I agree with SD73. Only two more updates left, right folks?
  5. Only in XP Mode on my Win 7 machine, the update KB4486463 doesn't take. After running it 32 times, it continues to appear in the yellow shield on the next reboot. Not important because this is only in the XP Mode, not my real machine, but annoying, you know?
  6. heinoganda - your steps with SSL 3.0 on and off just worked for me. But that's NUTTY, man!
  7. Dear guinea pigs friends – Now that KB4487085 has disappeared from the list, are all the other updates OK, including Office 2003 and 2007 Compatibility? Has anyone actually run them without problems? By the way, most of the Askwoody website is devoted to bad updates from MS (although only for later OSs). MS has gotten quite bad about testing them. Many thanks.
  8. roytam - I remain confident that dencorso, heinoganda, bersaglio and Dave-H will keep Win 7 going for at least 12½ years. I still have a flip phone.
  9. Whoa! For those who can still read me, which of the updates should I avoid? I have plain old XP with Office 2003. And I'd like to survive through April before moving to ... 7.
  10. Hey - I have a weekend free - what better to do than to check this mighty thread? I just manually ran Microsoft Update on my XP machine, and it shows me an OPTIONAL update - should I run it? It says: Update for WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4459091) I'm sure the wise leaders here have already discussed it, but I'm always sitting in the back of the classroom reading science fiction. Thanks.
  11. The walls are closing in - the room is getting smaller and smaller - soon we'll be squashed down to a singularity. THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING OPERATING SYSTEM. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AI57rfCqWFw
  12. About my post above at >here< , the settings for my NIC would not change in Device Manager - the changes would not stick. So I changed the "Reduce power" settings in the Registry at this key : [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318}\0001] However, I'm still getting the same Warnings in Event Viewer. Odd, but not fatal - I'm connected as soon as I use the machine.
  13. Jack Finley - Maybe you nailed it. I just rechecked properties for my NIC, and, in Power Management, two "Reduce link speed" settings were ON. I just UNchecked them. I always UNcheck the "Reduce link speed" boxes - I want my PC's NIC going full speed all the time. Maybe IProSetMonitor updated the driver and these settings went into a "reduce speed" default? ALSO, in Event Viewer - System, I have groupings of "Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0023AE71AAF4. The following error occurred: The semaphore timeout period has expired. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server." Thoughts? Anyway, thanks for suggestion. We'll see, Zoom zoom!
  14. heinoganda - "buffered 5 or 8 ports" means managed? Or still unmanaged, which of course is cheaper? At some point I shall buy an inexpensive unmanaged switch because we need a few more wired connections. But isn't that just an extension of the router, like adding network sockets to the router? I thought switches were NOT sub-networks. (I bought my first and only switch six months ago for $17 to fix an issue with one device in my wife's small office. Her ObiHai device for GoogleVoice telephone stopped working behind her old small router, and with the new switch connected to all of the landlord's network, the router and now the ObiHai, I was able to move the ObiHai directly into the landlord's network, and it started working again. That's when I learned that a switch is not a router and does not create a sub-network. I describe it as adding ethernet sockets directly to whatever network it's connected to, like an extension cord with five sockets.) Thanks again.
  15. Happy Holidays to all again ... and now I have a free day to ask this question: My XP machine seems to disconnect from home network connection and then reconnect a few times a day (and night). I do not see this while I am using the machine, but I get messages in the tray that now I am connected to the internet. (I leave my machine on all the time and reboot maybe once every ten days.) I don't see the same issue on my Win 7 machine (same network). Maybe this started when I got FIOS 1Gbps and Verizon's Quantum G1100 router in April. (Is it too fast for my old XP+duct tape machine?) How can I trace the issue? Is there a small-footprint monitoring program that might help? Thanks.
  16. someguy25 - suggest the following: From here in this forum thread, go backwards until you find Bersaglio's list of links of manual downloads of this month's updates. Manually download and install only the link for the update to Internet Explorer 8. Reboot and then see if you're OK. If still not OK, manually download and install only the link(s) for update(s) to Office 2007 Compatibility Pack. Reboot again. Then wait for yellow shield, which should update you nicely without your CPU running at 50% or 100% (or you could manually install ALL of Bersaglio's links).
  17. Looks like I'm not the only nut case here. Happy Holidays!
  18. You have Escargots in Lithuania? I love them in France, but maybe they're better in Lithuania?
  19. I have just now UNchecked TLS 1.0, leaving 1.1 and 1.2 CHECKED, and rebooted. Well, here I am (on Firefox), and my Outlook Express emails seem to work. So OK. Unless, of course, while TLS 1.0 was checked, everything I did was secretly intercepted by Russia, and the last 4½ years have been communications with FAKE heinoganda, dencorso and others and the next sentence will destroy the internet, So I'd better not wri
  20. My yellow shield list shows only one version of KB4467689 ready to install, not two. And KB4467689 is NOT already installed, per MU update history and Belarc. Should I do anything before letting the yellow shield run? Thanks.
  21. Heinoganda's post prompted me to look. In my Internet Options, I have DISabled SSL 2.0 and 3.0, but TLS 1.0, 1.1 and 1,2 are all ENabled. Is that still OK for XP? Is it OK for Win 7? Thanks.
  22. Mcinwwl - October 12, 2021 - three years from yesterday, And considering that it's only four years since I started doing the XP POS updates (thanks to this thread), those three years will pass fast enough. I am NOT looking forward to Win 10, neither at home nor at work. Does anyone know how many people are actually (still) updating XP with the POS hack?
  23. I wonder whether MS might not extend Win 7 a bit. Just this month, there were two meltdowns from updates to Win 10. I don't see how businesses (especially mom-and-pop businesses) can trust Win 10 yet. But it will be another year before the world realizes that Win 7 is going away, so maybe the complaining won't start soon enough..
