    You have to compare the file "wuaueng.dll" in folder system32 with the patched one from archive Restore_WU_XP.7z. The version number of unpatched and patched file are the same. So it can't be used for comparing. Therefore try a binary comparison! You have to be sure that the patched version of archive Restore_WU_XP.7z has been copied definitely to these folders. Or do it manually!

    Check if the correct patched version of "wuaueng.dll" exists in both folder system32 and system32\dllcache. In a lot of cases SFC (System File Protection) replaces the patched version by an original one. And what about config.ini of ProxyHTTPSProxyMII? Did you use my provided file?

    Hi, I will gladly help you to solve your problem. At first you can post your Windows Update log located in Windows system folder. Which guide did you follow? Is it this one "Complete guide for restoring Microsoft Update in IE"? Most of people here had this error code 0x80072F78 because one or more steps of my guide were missing or not performed properly.

    Logically I would do that in this way. First all SP3 updates, then POSReady reg file and finally all POSReady updates.

    AFAIK if ProxHTTPSProxyMII 1.3a (20150527) does not work in Win 2000, then unfortunately no chance. The only way is to install Win 2000 in a VM and let ProxHTTPSProxyMII run in your host system.

    Ok, congrats! You did it! As I wrote above, following the mentioned guide leads to a successful access to MU.

    Maybe you did all steps but did you verify each one deeply? Presumably your Windows Update Client hasn't been installed properly. Install it again. Then install patch and check if the correct patched version of "wuaueng.dll" exists in both folder system32 and system32\dllcache. In a lot of cases SFC replaces the patched version by an original one. Check if all registry entries have been added and so on. One thing I can say definitely: my guide is working and has been tested successfully. All people here who said "I did all steps" missed one or didn't verify carefully if all has been done correctly. Some posts above you can read such comments. Checking all is the first you should do.

    Some times ago I made an iso image containing all updates of Office 2007 and 2010 by using WSUS Offline Update from www.wsusoffline.net. So I do not have to download all updates via MU if I want to install one of them.

    All these problems with Microsoft Office, especially endless searches of Microsoft Update, incompatible updates and so on, made me stop installing Microsoft Office packages on Windows XP a long time ago. I use Softmaker Office 2016 Portable with all available features. It's totally sufficient for me. If I had to use Microsoft Office in Windows XP, I would install Office 2007. Older software is often a better choice in an old operating system.

    @heinoganda's cacert_Updater.exe contains three files: CERTUPD.bat (batch file containing several commands), HTTPDL.exe (downloader) and URLLINK (file containing download-link of cacert.pem). After examination I found out that the downloader HTTPDL.exe doesn't do its job anymore i.e. the downloader couldn't connect to the server targeted in download-link of URLLINK. Therefore I have updated HTTPDL.exe to new version which is working properly again in Windows XP. Is that detailed enough? Anyway, thanks for your interest!

    Hi to all and especially to @mina7601, As I posted above and confirmed by @mina7601, the cacert Updater of @heinoganda's ProxHTTPSProxy packages doesn't work anymore. Applying the file cacert_Updater.exe leads to the message "Roots Certificates could not be updated!". I have analyzed this problem and could fix the file cacert_Updater.exe. Now it works in the way as it should be.     Thanks for your quick reply! In this case bad news are good news for me. I already thought something was wrong with my system. On the other hand I would have been a little surprised too. Usually my system works like a charme. But as advertised I will try to fix that if I can, and I do hope so.

    Can any of you confirm that @heinoganda's cacert_Updater.exe in his ProxHTTPSProxy packages doesn't work anymore? Yesterday I tried to update cacert.pem and I got the message "Roots Certificates could not be updated!". I'm interested to know if I'm the only one having this problem or if it's the same for you. And if so, then I would be inclined to fix the problem.

    Of course, a lot. My recommendation is the freeware XMedia Recode for Windows XP SP3. This is the last release for Windows XP: https://www.xmedia-recode.de/en/download_xp.php More recent versions are not XP-compatible. Another option is WinX DVD Ripper Platinum. Here is a giveaway link: https://www.winxdvd.com/giveaway/dvd-ripper-holiday-giveaway.htm. Additionally you can use AnyDVD if you have problems while converting, but you have to use Google for getting a link, and it's commercial software. Hope it'll be what you are looking for.

    If your error code is still 0x80072f78, you have missed a step in my linked guide. Check if all has been performed properly, or better, do all step once again by verifying each step! The error code you have posted above has nothing to do with HTTPSProxy. Presumably one or more steps are missing or haven't been performed successfully.

    This configuration looks fine. I can see in your screenshot a WU update notification shield. Is access to MU web site now working for you?

    Comments can generally only be understood as they were written. In your case without any reference, therefore my answer is absolutely logical. Unfortunately, we are not clairvoyant!

    These urls you have to use for accessing MU: http://fe2.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en or http://fe2.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?g_sconsumersite=1. The url www.update.microsoft.com has to be listed under Trusted Zone with security level to high.

    What is "open proxy"? Please be a little more specific! If all is done completely, it'll work in Windows XP in any case. Did you really do any step of this guide?
