  1. There aren't any real technical reasons. Remember, Small Business Server runs everything on the same box. The main reason for it is performance and security. There are some security settings you want to apply to your domain controllers that could break Exchange Server, and vice versa.
  2. Agreed. SP2 is rock solid.
  3. Did you try changing the batteries?
  4. There are some things that don't work right when using a regular connection, but do with a console connection. Printing to PDF with PrimoPDF is one example.
  5. If you don't want to purchase MCE I recommend checking out HTPC News for some good 3rd party solutions. Some of them are even free. http://www.htpcnews.com/ You'll still need the requisite hardware such as a TV Tuner Card though.
  6. Since he's running a P4 520 he probably has a PCIe based system, which won't have a setting for the AGP Aperture size. IMO, the AGP Apeture size setting doesn't make that much of a difference in performance anyway. The bottom line is that his settings are probably turned up too high for the X800 to get decent frame rates at anything higher than 1024x768. If he doesn't want to turn any of the graphics settings down but still wants higher resolutions while maintaining the same frame rate he has now at 1024x768 then he has no option but to get a faster video card. A faster CPU will help some, but not as much as the video card (since he already has a decent CPU).
  7. If it supports a P4 3.0C then it supports Hyperthreading.
  8. That's not entirely true. There are some appliciations (Windows Media Player comes to mind) that make use of some DirectX features. Yes, you should install the latest version. It'll give you the latest security and performance updates for DirectX.
  9. For starters...it's now on by default now. You also don't have to turn it off anymore just to do a screenshot.
  10. And until this is done you won't see any clients in the WSUS interface. The clients register with WSUS the first time they connect to it for updates. Group Policy is definitely the easiest way to configure the clients.
  11. Set the gateway on Dell NIC2 to itself (192.168.2.1). I'm trying to figure out exactly why you have two NICs in that server for internet access when you already have a different NAT server setup...?
  12. Sure thing.
  13. They've been updated. Among other things, they're using the newer motors so they're quieter. Even their SATA drives are native now (before they were PATA with on onboard SATA converter). Their 320GB drive is pretty cheap now as well ($130 direct from WD for bare drive).
  14. My recommendation is for a Western Digital 250GB drive. You can find 'em fairly cheap (Best Buy has them on sale in the US this week...PATA version for $90USD and SATA version for $100USD). Just make sure your motherboard has support for hard drives larger than 137GB (48-bit LBA support). This can usually be added through a BIOS update (so make sure you have the latest BIOS).
  15. Exactly. Basically we need to know the utilization. We don't want to give recommendations that would be underpowered in two years. Overpowered is OK as long as it's within your budget. Which brings me to my next point...how much is your budget? As for splitting it up...it's just good security to have your web server kind of isolated from everything else, especially if it's going to be a public web server.
  16. Do you have the gateway IP configured? What is the IP address of the router?
  17. Old school favorite....PowerStrip.
  18. That's easy.... Open WinRAR and navigate to the files that you want to archive. Select the files and/or directories. Right click on the selection and choose Add files to archive. When the wizard pops up go to the Advanced tab. There's a Set password... button. Click it and set your password. Now set any other options you want (Compression method, etc). Click OK and your archive will be created with a password.
  19. According to all the documents I found (including the Crucial Memory Advisor), that's the memory you need.
  20. The Digital Media Pro is the new version of the old Multimedia keyboard. They put the arrows/insert/home/delete all back where they're supposed to be on the Digital Media Pro as well. And the Function Lock isn't annoying anymore.
  21. I found your memory pretty cheap... http://www.satech.com/compaq-memory-compaq...-cd-memory.html I also managed to find some base information about the system...something that finally told me it was indeed Pentium Pro based: http://www.dealtime.co.uk/xPF-Compaq_Deskp..._CDS_247572_032 Definitely grab yourself a Pentium II Overdrive chip if you can find one. That should bump the system to 333MHz without any overclocking at all. Unfortunately you'll probably have an easier time finding another Pentium Pro chip because the PII Overdrive chips were pretty rare to begin with, much less trying to find one all these years later. http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/DP081098.HTM
  22. What does it being an OEM CD have to do with slipstreaming SP2?
  23. It's quite possible he's in a domain environment where his systems people haven't enabled RDP. In such a case he wouldn't know the Administrator password (and the account would probably be renamed anyway). I'd chop my users' hands off if I found them trying to hack my settings. You'd better believe it'd get 'em fired in a heartbeat. Having said that, I'll provide no more assistance in this matter because he's probably doing something he isn't supposed to be...
  24. MMX has been around for years (since late '96/early '97). I got this quick little quote from Intel's site: Are you sure this is a Pentium Pro based system? Can you give me all the model number info? I want to see if I can find information about it before you purchase anything. From what you just posted, I don't think this is a Pentium Pro based system.
  25. Yeah...this thread should be moved there... I'll go ahead and answer one of your questions for you though. You need to delete the svcpack directory under i386 as well as delete the svcpack.inf file in the i386 directory. Once you do that you should be able to integrate SP2 and then all post-SP2 hotfixes. Once the thread is moved someone more knowledgeable in RIS setups can probably answer the other question.
