  1. submix8c stated;

    " This indicates that Win98SE is ok with ANY of the "versions"...

    http://community.lin...ws-98/td-p/4659 "

    Actually, the webpage you cited above contains this text;

    " Tech Support ... said that v2 and v4 "should" work with 98SE, but v1 will not. "

    therefore the webpage you cited does not in fact indicate support for your

    statement.

    (It may well be that any version of the Linksys WUSB54G will work in Win98SE,

    but other webpages I viewed previously (including the one you cited), taken in

    total, simply didn't give a clear enough indication as to whether all versions of the

    Linksys WUSB54G work in Win98SE - hence I choose to make no statement.)

    You are correct that the Linksys WUSB54G requires specific drivers for each

    specific version of the Linksys WUSB54G.

    You are sadly more correct than you know to give warning of payment required

    to download from website http://www.modem-help.co.uk/

    (Briefly, that website's business model is to possibly require payment, not to

    download drivers, but rather for the bandwidth used to download drivers.)

    Unfortunately, a listing on that website of OS drivers for a device should never

    be considered or cited as evidence that such OS drivers work, or even exist!

    (As an example, we are aware from here;

    http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/158119-intel-prowireless-2200-driver-for-windows98/

    regarding Win98 drivers for the Intel Pro 2200bg, as PROBLEMCHYLD put it,

    "no matter how far you go back, there was never a driver for Win98."

    Despite this, modem-help's owner continues listing alleged drivers for Win98

    for the 2200bg on that website, without any reasonable basis for his belief that

    they 'might' work, as discussed here;

    http://forums.modem-help.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=11411&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

    on modem-help's forums.)

    Therefore, regarding modem-help.co.uk , 'Caveat Emptor'.

  2. Your suggestion has merit - I'm sure you can understand I didn't want to

    suggest a specific obscure MSFN webpage, as, well, then it may well be

    accessed by a large number of Guests regularly, so it's not obscure any

    more... and might be regularly found in the server cache...

    (My last paragraph you quoted was more my afterthought, as I thought if

    you are going to occaisionally test the time it takes to serve a MSFN

    webpage, might as well try and make it a worst more difficult case test -

    retrieving and serving the webpage (data) more likely from the server disk,

    rather than most likely from the server cache.)

    Anyway, any obscure thread, from way backtime topic 1;

    http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/1-nvidia-1461-optimized-for-winxp/#entry1

    up to present times, anywhere in there would do...

    Cheers

  3. As a quick reply, you should be giving more info, like if it is

    a V4, V2 or V1 Linksys WUSB54G.

    Near as can tell, drivers for Win98SE were available in the past +

    apparently the 'Linksys Monitor' software is included inside the Linksys

    drivers for later OSes, presumably same applies for 'Linksys Monitor'

    software for Win98SE (using Win98SE drivers).

    At http://support.linksys.com/en-us/support/adapters/WUSB54G/download

    are FAQ for later OSes, but which should give you ideas for faultchecking

    in 98SE.

    Other documentation may be available, i.e. this document;

    http://www.docstoc.com/docs/43520118/How-to-Install-and-Configure-Linksys-WUSB54G-Version-1

    mentions;

    "How To Configure Wireless MAC Filtering

    ...To check adapter MAC addresses otherwise, you can;

    Look on the Box.

    In Windows 2000 or XP use ipconfig/all.

    In Windows 98[sE] or ME use winipcfg. "

    (Sry for being so none-specific, have to leave computer now.)

  4. It may be useful to use a website such as, e.g.;

    http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/

    to get a handle on whether the Board server is serving pages

    faster or slower, by comparing the download times for (all the elements

    of) your chosen MSFN webpage, at different times, to that websites

    server, instead of only testing download times to your computer (and

    only through your ISP's server).

    (Note, it may also be a better testing methodology to test by inputting

    the URL of a 'not often served' MSFN webpage, rather than say,

    ' www.msfn.org ', which would be served so continuously by the Board

    server that you would expect that webpage to be continuously present

    in it's server cache.)

  5. A representative of a Finnish security vendor has pulled out of speaking at next year's RSA Conference following allegations that RSA worked with the US' National Security Agency (NSA) to weaken security standards.

    In an open letter to the chiefs of RSA and parent company EMC, F-Secure's chief research officer Mikko Hyppenon confirmed he is cancelling his talk at the popular San Francisco event, which will take place at the end of February 2014.

    At issue is a Reuters article from last week alleging that RSA accepted a random number generator from the NSA and set it as the default option in one of its products, in exchange for $10m.

    Although RSA yesterday responded with a blog on the topic, Hyppenon claimed its rebuttal lacked an overt denial on the central allegation in the story, something other onlookers - including independent security consultant Graham Cluley - have also noted.

    "As my reaction to this, I'm cancelling my talk at the RSA Conference USA 2014 in San Francisco in February 2014," wrote Hyppenon, who has spoken no fewer than eight times at either RSA Conference USA, RSA Conference Europe or RSA Conference Japan.

    "Aptly enough, the talk I won't be delivering at RSA 2014 was titled ‘Governments as Malware Authors'."

    Also refer to speculative listing regarding EFI for that MacBookPro model 2,1 , i.e.;

  7. Even if your adopted naming convention has the H x W as part of the file

    name, it may be worth preceding that with a 'p' for portrait, a say 'c' for

    landscape and a say 'e' for either... any screen with Whistlers' mother

    rocking on her back will look fairly strange, but a carpet of daisy's is

    unremarkable in pretty much any orientation you view them...

  8. "find me tcp/ip traffic compression tweak?"

    If sentence is read as "find me tcp/ip traffic compression tweak?" then, the

    'compression of traffic' that is transferred via TCP/IP (such as http) can be

    activated - such a thing exists. It's not usable if the webserver (you are

    downloading a webpage from) disallows it. Apparently as at 2013, most

    browsers & webservers are 'http compression' capable.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_compression

    This website checks if your favorite webserver has compression enabled;

  9. Prozactive;

    Without full information it is difficult to nut problems out. Therefore, I can

    only further suggest as a somewhat quick(er) & dirty test, the following:

    Save as described in post #129, the webpage whose link is given.

    Then open in a text editor the file INDEX.CSS (located now of course in;

    Facebook on W98 -SOLVED- - Windows 9x _ ME - MSFN Forum_files )

    Then search for '980' (there's only one instance), and

    Substitute '600' in its place, and

    Save the changed INDEX.CSS file.

    Temporairily disable internet access and clear browsing History, and

    See if, in Opera, viewed offline, your saved file;

    Facebook on W98 -SOLVED- - Windows 9x _ ME - MSFN Forum.htm

    has a change in the horizontal scroll bar for the viewable text content.

    Cheers

  10. @Prozactive, if an earlier version of IPBoard allowed you to view forum content on your small LCD

    display with word wrapping, can't you try similar to what tomasz86 is suggesting, by retrieving a forum

    webpage you saved earlier, then also downloading that same webpage now to a different directory,

    then (offline) try substituting the earlier saved CSS and JS files into the newer different directory

    version of the webpage, to ascertain if any particular earlier CSS or JS file enables the word wrap of

    the newer webpage content?

    [Hopefully you saved the earlier version as FILE - SAVE PAGE AS - WEB PAGE COMPLETE (and

    previously having saved the earlier webpage using 'show both parts' i.e.; ' .htm & _files ' parts)]

    If above wasn't successful, then you could try exactly what tomasz86 suggested, as simply outlined

    by poster Joseph_sw in this thread;

    http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/158862-facebook-on-w98-solved/#entry1017383

    It may be helpful to other users viewing this thread later, if you could state what device / OS ver /

    resolution in pixels you are using...

  11. as for ar_seven_am (EDIT:ar_seven_am apparently never understood the next line is quoting him - but,hey why prolong the thread.)
    "actually the "\w+" is only match for alphanumeric character (a-z, A-Z, 0-9), but

    not underscore or other simbolic (sic) character "
    if you could be so kind next time to state at the start exactly which regular

    expression engine (regex) you are using, or custom RE engine you are using,

    or minimally that the engine you are using is not ECMAScript compliant, that

    would help prevent time being wasted...
    as CharacterClassEscape 'w' has since oh, year 2000, been True for the 63

    characters cited [ A-Za-z0-9_ ] in all ECMAScript compliant expression engines

    - buy yourself a cheap copy of ECMA-262, 3rd Edition, Section 15.10.2.12

    and 2.6 if you have any doubts...

  12. Post #117, Kel, granted;
    @xper hasn't posted anything elseabout thatresults, I think specifically,
    for this post '#87,#92,#117' problem, the last link I gave in post #92
    seems a likely candidate for where the problem lays... only xper's
    authoritative investigations will unearth the problem cause.
    ...as a general comment, if it is not occuring already (and I note for testing,

    it is apparently not happening at other IP.Boards also), is needed a testing

    account by Admin that is a 'Member' level account to test with, as testing with

    Admin level may simply not expose some of the problems we run across...

    Post #116, Mitchsc, no apologies necessary, for;
    "email notifications of topic replies" having regard to scanning through all

    seen previously where revelant, for testing purposes TRY;
    (In your prefered topic);(or here);http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/158377-test/

    Clicking 'Follow Me',
    ticking 'Receive Notification' and selecting 'Only When Not On-Line' and
    ensure there are no ticks for 'Follow Anonymously' and
    clicking "Follow This Topic' in that box.
    Then go to webpage 'Notification options';
    http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?app=core&module=usercp&tab=core&area=notifications
    and tick 'Notification method to use for replies to followed topics' both
    PM and email
    and above that;
    tick 'Auto follow topics I reply to. Notification frequency' select 'OffLine'
    and ensure there are no ticks for;
    'Notify me when someone quotes my posts (and I'm not already following)' and
    at that page bottom click 'Save Changes'.
    NOW go to webpage 'Content I follow';
    http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=followed
    Click 'Toggle Edit Options" and you should see under your prefered topic;
    'Notify only when I am offline'. (If you do see that, simply leave that page).
    Then go back to your prefered topic, reply to some post, and then
    sign-out. (Check per methods discussed previously you ARE signed-out),
    and view your prefered topic offline, refreshing the wepage occaisionally.
    When someone Posts in it, you should eventually get an email (and a PM should
    also be generated).
    BUT here's where unknown waters are entered - for say, Daily Digests, they are
    set to run[generate-if-required] (by Admin) as a service at a set interval by
    IPB software, (if I understand methodology correctly) say every 20 minutes to
    an half hr (reasonable right?), that service to check if any Daily Digest(s) need

    to be generated for member(s), - but xper will have to inform

    us if 'immediate notifications' are actually immediate or run as a timed
    service, likewise regarding 'offline notifications'. YOU WOULD THINK that whatever
    the method or setting is, it reasonably can't be more than an hour (if as a
    service) - so if you [offline]have seen a post occur, and you wait maximally an hour

    + a minute for a service to action + a minute for an email to be launched on its way,
    heck, wait an hr and a half, if the service is functioning there must be found;
    an email in your email inbox, and
    when you sign-in,
    a PM in your {is it My Conversations?} - [all things functioning correctly].
    Notes; Quotes are turned off in above to prevent posts citing quotes
    interferring with the testing results, and like reason for certain other settings,

    and we are doing with offline selected to ensure we can watch and see if the

    Board operates as we expect for email & PM.

    If not, well xper will check from there-on.

    LATER EDIT: From the timestamps I am seeing on the received 'Offline Notifications'

    emails, evidently they are generated 'immediately' (of at least within a matter of

    seconds). Good to know.

  13. mitchsc said;

    "I'm really only interested it email notifications of topic replies."

    Although you haven't, in any of your previous posts, mentioned Digests, I did enquire of you on

    the 11th Nov about what updates you were selecting... absent a reply to that PM, I proceeded as

    if it were a Digest issue (per communication from another member).

    I have to leave shortly, so I'm going to dodge answering yr question for the time being... I'll add

    an EDIT to post #113, however, so you have something else to take into account...

  14. [more a grimace than a grin]...mitchsc, that's why I suggested to you for your testing;

    "...it has to be a topic that is certain to have several posts in it within a couple of days"

    The 'New Contents' listings have topics e.g.;

    t_unread.png Aero Glass for Win8.1 RTM Beta 4

    that are running hot ATM... remember you don't have to post in it, you are interested in

    whether (other persons' posts as a) (Daily) Digest are being promulgated to your email.

    As I related to somebody else recently, perhaps it might be useful to also carry out a

    confirmatory check during their testing, along the lines of;

    ..."So if you have checked all above,

    Then in;

    http://www.msfn.org/...a=notifications

    no tick for Auto follow topics I reply to. Notification frequency

    and
    make sure there are ticks in;

    Notification method to use for replies to followed topics both Msg and Email

    Notification method to use for followed topics daily/weekly digests Msg and Email

    Notification method to use for followed forums daily/weekly digests Msg and Email

    Notify me when someone quotes my posts (and I'm not already following) both Msg and Email

    Notify me when I receive a new personal conversation both Msg and Email
    Notify me of replies to my personal conversations both Msg and Email
    Don't forget to click Save Changes at that webpages bottom."

    "Then go to;"...[your selected topic webpage]...

    "At that topic top, click Follow This Topic and

    Select Notification Type Daily and

    no tick for Follow Anonymously then

    click Save Settings in that box."...

    ..."Then go to;

    http://www.msfn.org/...tentType=topics

    Look for and confirm"...[your selected topic]..."is there, and then at list top,

    click Toggle Edit Options and confirm 'Send a Daily Digest' is seen under that topic.

    (No need to tick a topic box and click Update Selected unless wrong notification is shown.)

    (You could also confirm other topics/forums you have daily/weekly digests set in, are shown to

    have the applicable daily or weekly under their topic/forum name.)

    (If nothing happens when you click Toggle Edit Options {except maybe a slight screen scroll} you

    probably have some kind of AdBlocker/Script Stopper interferring)" with your click

    ..."and you should get a Daily Digest,

    if you stay offline from MSFN for a period we'll figure out"...[~Day+]

    Further down the testing track, If no (Daily) Digest is in your email inbox, xper will probably check

    if a Digest was generated and sent to your email address, & check the IPB Email Error Log.

    Cheers

    EDIT; I've noticed with the FF24 browser I use that about half the time I sign-out, the sign-out

    doesn't work, and a few times I can't get it to work at all. Usually I religiously untick the 'Remember

    Me' box before signing -in - but who can be 100% certain they have never left it unticked, (from

    its default of 'ticked').

    As a further definate check that you are signed-out (when you are trying to stay out for more than

    24 hrs so a Daily Digest should be generated on unread posts), after signing-out in your normally

    used browser, you could view the msfn Forums webpage in a browser you usually NEVER use

    (for me, IE8), so there's no chance that browser has 'Remembered You', and view the members

    who are currently online. [Hello!, and there I was, the Board still had me signed-in!]

  16. Drugwash said;

    "Sorry, I've read this but never been a batch guy"

    Likewise, myself. In fact, I don't have a W98 computer ATM to test on - so I've been trying

    out these commmands/BAT's in XP, in cmd.exe windows. Therefore, such is useful only as

    guide for investigating what might work, the expectation being that PROBLEMCHYLD will

    try & see what actually works in the W98 environment.

    Anyway, onwards...

    "First batch above will not launch fullscreen"... (meaning the CHM will not be fullscreen),

    Yes, as noted. Further testing shows CHM in fullscreen can be achieved by usage of START .

    (In XP, this has the perhaps undesired result of an additional instance of the Command

    window (cmd.exe here) - we'll come back to that...)

    "and will also not wait for the .chm to close before launching the executable"

    actually, I found that until the CHM was closed, (by clicking on its X as PROBLEMCHYLD

    specified), MAIN.EXE would not open - MAIN.EXE immediately opening after that action.

    {I was actually using calc.exe as a testing stand-in for whatever the actual MAIN.EXE is.}

    I guess this can be explained because it's a XP CMD.EXE Window, & execution (of calc.exe hh.exe,

    a '32-bit GUI app' ) is occuring via a Script, ref; http://www.computerhope.com/starthlp.htm

    When executing an application that is a 32-bit GUI application, CMD.EXE does not wait for the application

    to terminate before returning to the command prompt. This new behavior does NOT occur if executing

    within a command script.

    When PROBLEMCHYLD tests in a Command.com Window on a W98 computer a different

    behaviour may occur, as you believe. At present, I believe he could try (for);

    1. "extract a .CHM, then launch the .chm file full screen. After that, close the .chm when users click

    the X and launch the main .EXE file."

    C:\CHM.BAT

    and text inside file CHM.BAT;

    C:\extract C:\some.cab some.chm C:\DESTPATH

    START /d C:\DESTPATH /MAX /WAIT some.chm

    CALL C:\MAINPATH\MAIN.EXE

    note; .chm file with batch changes above now is fullscreen!

    depending on what kind of exe that MAIN.EXE actually is, it may/may not open maximized,

    so he may end up needing to use START for MAIN.EXE, instead of CALL. It may be that

    for every START the enduser will see another Command Window (at best, minimized to the

    taskbar), which would be distracting... and may invite tampering.

    If MAIN.EXE was the finish of his required actions then above needs e.g. EXIT, and also

    instances of @ECHO occuring throughout (to "Make sure no text is displayed in the console

    window to make it close automatically at the end of the batch file" ref;),

    http://www.robvanderwoude.com/exit.php

    If he found too many Command Windows were visible to the enduser, some could be

    successively ended when unneeded (by TASKKILL for instance.)

    Cheers

  17. Ref above post#98;

    Mmmm, two won't die 'loading' overlays - I notice (when FF add-on AdBlockPlus is disabled) that usually there

    are two advertisement block inlays in MSFN webpages, having sometimes overly animated content.

    tomasz86, do you have any adblocking going on in 'Opera Mobile Classic' browser?; - if not, perhaps scan this;

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2270990

    Of course, the URL's from which the advertisements are being served may change occaisionally, therefore

    be prepared to 'view the source' HTML of any particular (MSFN) webpage to see what (new) advertisement URL's

    have been placed within that particular webpage...

  18. NO-one so far ? (must be sleep time for wise owls) Lead off...

    assumptions;

    source and destination paths, source CABs, filenames, are known.

    the chm file is not a chm_ file and the chm file ends with a .chm extension.

    version of extract to be used is that avail in win98 cd not that on W95cd & not wextract.exe .

    (sfc.exe or cscript.exe not considered).

    YOU WISH THE DOS WINDOW TO close ? (well, minimize DOS Window anyway).

    1. "extract a .CHM, then launch the .chm file full screen. After that, close the .chm when users click

    the X and launch the main .EXE file."

    START /MIN CHM.BAT

    and text inside file CHM.BAT;

    C:\extract C:\some.cab some.chm C:\DESTPATH
    C:\DESTPATH\some.chm
    C:\MAINPATH\MAIN.EXE

    note; .chm file above is not fullscreen.
