Word 2007 files take forever to open in Vista (was: Will an SSD help?)
BlouBul replied to JorgeA's topic in Microsoft Office
Hi dencorso, Thanks for the reply. I just googled the /n, it means no new default doc, I cant find anything on the /e (although it seemed to work for someone before). If the /n doesn't work, maybe he can try /e (or both), although the DDE-myth might have been busted already for his system. If that doesn't work, maybe we should rename this thread to something more suitable (like Word 2007 files take forever to open in Vista) and move it to a thread where we might get a couple of cents from the other continents as well. Maybe the real software gurus won't read a thread regarding SSD in the hardware department. What do you think? Got to go now, my wife expects me to work in the garden today and I'm not allowed near my computer, but I'll try to make plan... -

Thanks dencorso for the correction. I just copy the command from post 8 in the link JorgeA supplied. What is the difference between the /n and /e? -

Word 2007 files take forever to open in Vista (was: Will an SSD help?)
BlouBul replied to JorgeA's topic in Microsoft Office
Hi JorgA, The question was just to see if the network cable affects the opening times. So for a test, disconnect your network cable, open the file, see if it makes a difference. Then you can reconnect the cable and post a reply . Just to confirm the dismissal of DDE, Is there a difference in the opening times between when you doubleclick to open the document from outside Word and when you open the document through Word with file-open? Did you also try opening Word through that command that disable DDE? -
Seagate 7200.10 HDDs, How-to fix BSY state too!
BlouBul replied to scanman1's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I think the drive just needed to cool down , but you are welcome to try... There are also some more info here: http://stx.lithium.c...0-10/td-p/53921 I still do not think you got the BSY problem from what you described in your previous post. -
Word 2007 files take forever to open in Vista (was: Will an SSD help?)
BlouBul replied to JorgeA's topic in Microsoft Office
Not sure if it is technically correct to count all the two cents in different currencies together (dencorso might complain it is not scientific enough ), but if everyone agrees to give two 1c coins (rather than 1 off 2c coin), we can count the 1 cent coins together ) We can later decide what we gonna call it once we reach 100 cents Hopefully the problem will be solved before then. Anyway, looks like we need more than the current 10 cents, so here is another 2x1c ZAR: If the file doesn't open faster through Word's File-Open command and we can dismiss the DDE theory by also running Word without DDE from the commandline as per post#62 (just change Excel.exe to WinWord.exe), I found some more possible things to check: 1. Is your network cable connected? http://forums.techar...port/889081.htm 2. Do you have any compatibility packs installed? http://www.eggheadca...-documents.aspx -
The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs
BlouBul replied to Gradius2's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
The method is designed for 7200.11. We got one (very unconfirmed!!!) report of someone fixing a 7200.10, but details is a bit dodgy. See http://www.msfn.org/...-bsy-state-too/ and let us know if you can figure something out. Maybe the drive was just too hot and needed to cool down. Although the symptoms you describe, doesn't sound like either BSY or 0LBA. It is either bricked or not. That sounds like some mechanical failure and not a firmware issue. A bit of advice: backup your important data as soon as it is detected again. -

BlouBul replied to JorgeA's topic in Microsoft Office
Sorry no luck with the googling for now. Did you try the direct command in my previous post?, otherwise we'll have to wait for one of the software gurus to come up with a fix. I'm gonna get some sleep now, See you tomorrow. Good luck. -

BlouBul replied to JorgeA's topic in Microsoft Office
Got the same problem in Win 7, just tried . Maybe try the shortcut as suggested in post 8 from the run command: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /e "%1" (with the quotation marks around the %1, but not around the path. I will google some more in the mean time. -

BlouBul replied to JorgeA's topic in Microsoft Office
That still tells me (absolutely confirmed), it is not the CPU, but "Something Else" in the Vista/Office 2007/Norton combination. Did you look at the link in my previous post. Maybe disabling DDE will help. -

I agree with your logic, BUT, (as you have also hinted in your last post), don't you think there are too many variables to conclude anything other than if the pentium is not a lot slower than the Vista machine, it is something other than the processor? Won't it be more usefull if he tries to open the document on a friends computer with similar (or slightly less) specifications? That woud be a more comparable result. Lets also wait for his laptop results. My gut feel (which might be worth less than my 0.02 ZAR) is that a 15 MB file should open in less than 30 sec on his system. Do you know anything about DDE slowing opening of office files down? I found this post while googling for an answer http://howtotroubles...ow-to-open.html. -

BlouBul replied to JorgeA's topic in Microsoft Office
I agree partly with you. It is just the question of what will be actually gained by such a thorough investigation. If we see the old computer is on average 10 sec, 20 sec, or 60 sec faster (or slower), it will not tell us anything. Just the fact that it is comparable at all (and especially better!!) than the new machine tells me something else is wrong. I do not want to waste JorgeA's time with tests that will not really tell us anything on how to solve the problem. Agree about Vista and Office 2007 being resource hogs, but it should stil be a lot faster than the old pentium. Just my 0.02 ZAR. -

Still to be beaten by a Pentium 233 with a lot less Ram tells me it is not the processor. He can repeat it once or twice (I don't think 7 times is really neccessary and he did it already a couple of times on his new machine. It is not a scientific benchmarking survey, it is just to try and identify the problem (or in this case what is not the problem) Just to put it in perspective: The new machine is 15% slower on its best time and 27% slower on average than the 10+ year old machine (although the average for the pentium is taken over only one try as mentioned). -

BlouBul replied to JorgeA's topic in Microsoft Office
BlouBul, I loaded the big Word file on my little Pentium-233 notebook. The time on the stopwatch when the file finished loading was 2:21. --JorgeA WOW!!! That is a huge improvement. So changing the processor should not help. There must be someting else interfering. I will give it some more thought . (In the mean time, use the P-233, as that is the fastest ) Did you try it on your laptop yet? (even though it has Norton, maybe it is something else) -

Shortcut for Run is Windowskey +R It will need the /a at the end, as CoffeeFiend suggested to run without Add-ons, without it, it will be the same as starting it normally -
Word 2007 files take forever to open in Vista (was: Will an SSD help?)
BlouBul replied to JorgeA's topic in Microsoft Office
Shouldn't it be better to reboot in safe mode to ensure nothing else tries to scan the file as it is being opened? Or is it only the add-ins that will scan it? I agree that the drive contents shouldn't get damaged (said so in my post). Just mentioned it as a sideline as JorgeA was very worried about his pc, but I agree, that is not really relevant in this case -

Other brands like LG and Sony do not need such a cable . If you really are stuck and can't find a converter, (and willing to risk about $2 and a bit of time), you can always try a Nokia data cable CA-42 or DKU-5 with driver cd, that should be easy available (even in Geneva). I'll try to help you to get those working. These people also ship to Switzerland, if you want to pay a bit more. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Seagate-Barracuda-7200-11-OTHERS-TTL-USB-RS232-TOOL-/170513245979#shId -
Word 2007 files take forever to open in Vista (was: Will an SSD help?)
BlouBul replied to JorgeA's topic in Microsoft Office
It actually might be useful if the opening time is significantly less than 3 minutes on those machines, that will tell you something is interfering with it in your computer. Safe Mode test shouldn't take a long time, probably less than ten minutes (3 min to reboot in safe mode, 1 min to open Word, hopefully a lot less than 3 min to open your file, and 3 min to reboot normally) It shouldn't be risky, as you are not near your data (your hdd), Although it is obviously recommended to have full backup. If the new chip doesn't work for any reason, you can just put the old one back. I don't think Windows will have a problem, as you only changes one component. Still think you should first test it on another machine before spending unneccessary money (although you should have some spare by not investing in a SSD) and it is always nice to get a faster computer (any excuse will do ) -

Have you ever tried opening the file on another computer (with a different AV) to compare the opening times? -
The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs
BlouBul replied to Gradius2's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Hi Marc, Welcome here Unfortunately that won't work . Have been mentioned several times in this thread already. On some of the older models that used to work, but on the 7200.11 the PCB is specific to the drive and you risk losing both if you try that. In this case the long cut is actually the short cut. It is actually quite easy once you get your converter sorted out. -

I also suspect Norton. Try to exit Norton totally (or disable all protection) as Norton might still want to "protect" you against the evil office file even though you told it not to. Safe mode without Norton should also work. Just my 0.02 ZAR (which isn't worth much, I know) -

Try something like this in your local electronic shop for that elusive converter. http://www.robotshop...cable-3-3v.html A bit expensive This one is cheaper http://cgi.ebay.com/Seagate-7200-11-Lba0-BSY-Error-Bug-USB-Cable-Tool-Fix-/170543848048?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27b5349a70 Also, see examples as given by jaclaz two pages back: http://www.msfn.org/...post__p__940049 See same links, They might be willing to sell it to you... You can try sending it back after use, though it is not condoned -

Just make sure you can set the voltage easy, otherwise get a 3.3V only converter.
