  1. I also heard the rumour of a firmware update being available Yes the windows version of update is not too hot, better to do it with the iso cd. Also do the long and short test with seatools to be sure your drive is fine.
  2. Thanks dencorso, You explained it very well in those links. Now I can't claim that I don't know too much about imaging anymore. We have to wait anyway for the hdd to come. As long as you come back afterwards (we need you for the tweaks)
  3. Try to right-click on the folder/drive and see that sharing is enabled. Also check your permissions.
  4. Please do not double-post See reply here http://www.msfn.org/...post__p__941713
  5. You're welcome . Glad it worked.
  6. Hi ElKazador, You do not need to double post in different topics. You can get tutorial here http://www.mapleleafmountain.com/seagatebrick.html Also see READ-ME-FIRST http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/143880-seagate-barracuda-720011-read-me-first/ Also see jaclaz's reply in the post just above yours http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/128807-the-solution-for-seagate-720011-hdds/page__view__findpost__p__941628
  7. You're welcome. (and thanks for all the thanks ) Actually repagination was allen2's idea Thanks to you I've discovered the same I've got an external hdd full of movies that is connected to a multimedia player, which connects to my normal tv. Great for watching movies (and the kids can't damage the dvd's), as well as backup, so I agree that is a good choice if you can use it for something else.
  8. It is amazing what one can do through the internet (and free!!!) these days. Not in the too distant past one would either had to take a course in Latin (after you figured out which language it was ), or looked for a dusty dictionary somewhere in the university library. Anyway, thanks for the translation (for some reason I always wonder about these things).
  9. Hi JorgeA, I was just thinking again (still don't know if that's a good thing or not), but since you do not really need extra storage space, I wondered if you don't have a friend with an external drive with about 200 GB free (I guess the image will be about the same size as the data?), who can lend it to you for a couple of days. It seems a bit of a waste to spend money on something you only need for a couple of days. Unless you can use it for something else thereafter.
  10. You're welcome, I don't mind trying to help (not that any of my ideas worked yet), it is like dencorso always say:"Adiuvat plus qui nihil obstat" (No, I don't speak Latin, but Google Translate does) As dencorso also said jaclaz said giving up is not an option. I think by booting in safe mode, we have eliminated most of those processes. OK, I see, thanks again for explaining. I guess System Restore and registry backup won't be good enough if something really goes wrong.
  11. Sure. And that's precisely the idea! After creating a "dumb", byte-by-byte image *and making sure it can be redeployed correctly* one can mess up one's installation seven-ways-to-Sunday, and then get back to *just as messed-up as it initially was*, so nothing one does is not undoable. Think of it as a bullet-proof form of undo. Thanks dencorso, that makes sense Another question (bearing in mind my lack of knowledge of images), but since he is only using 110GB of his 500GB, can't he make an image on the same drive (maybe another partition)?
  12. Great to hear (you nearly got me worried) What was wrong? (or was it just something wrong with the old PC)
  13. Hi Maddrummer, Welcome to MSFN you might need a 3.3V converter, see Read-Me_First, http://www.msfn.org/...610#entry922610 Point 10 will explain in more details Also, did you connect ground? (Point 7)
  14. FWIW, I think I discovered how to disable DDE (not that I think that is the problem anymore) http://www.msfn.org/...post__p__940125 Also have you tried detect and repair? http://www.msfn.org/...post__p__889266 Edit: Sorry, Detect and Repair was for Office 2003, now it is Office Diagnostics http://www.howtogeek...ft-office-2007/ Edit 2: I think you can only disable DDE in Excel, I do not have the option in Word 2010, but do have it in Excel 2010
  15. dencorso, what do you think of instead of deleting the whole Office directory in the registry, to go one level deeper and deleting (or rather renaming) the directories for the old Office versions (after a registry backup and creating a System Restore point)? Also, maybe a stupid question (I do not know too much about disk images), but if he creates an image of his drive as it is now, won't the same problem occur again if he recreate the image somewhere else?
  16. The first prize will be to surgically remove the bad office code in the registry. I personally would have just used the ol sledgehammer approach as suggested (after a backup of the registry and creating a System Restore point) you are also renaming the office dir in the registry (and not deleting it), and can change it back if it doesn't work. The changing of the settings shouldn't take too long to fix again (you will have about 3 min spare from each time you opens a word file ) but that's just me. If that doesn't work I would have (again, thats just me) installed Vista and Office on a new partition. Shouldn't take too long or be too much of a pita if you still have all the install disks. (and you will still have all your data and programs on the other partition that you can use if you get stuck for any reason.) If that works you can install the rest as well and use one partition for data and another for windows installation. I like to format my hdd at least once a year to get rid of all the old junk that seems to accumulate in the registry. But first, let us try it the elegant way. That will also be a better solution for this thread than a reformat and re-install. Off course if you install win 98 on the new partition, your system will be really flying...
  17. I was just trying to think ahead. I think dencorso and/or puntoMX will guide you to try and fix the registry. If that won't work (which I'm hoping will work), I was thinking as per post#91 to create another bootable partition to install firstly only Vista and Office which should hopefully fix the problem. You have more than enough free space for that option. If you had an old internal drive lying around, we could also have just used that. Also told me of course that it is not due to not enough disk space that your computer is slow.
  18. Yes, I think I understand what you did (which seems correct) and the error messages, but I do not quite understand why it is not working. If you tried it on a different computer, than where it was before, did you set the CMOS to autodetect the HDD? Are the computer also set to boot from that hdd first and not somewhere else like a non-bootable floppy?
  19. How much space do you have left on your big partition? Do you have an old internal drive lying around somewhere?
  20. Hi jakub199, Welcome to MSFN I am sorry, but I do not quite understand what you are saying. Did you have a SATA hdd which you have successfully unbricked, but now have a problem with the RAID controller? Can you access the drive, but can't test it with Seatools software?
  21. Thanks puntoMX, That is indeed a better idea (I was a bit worried about the method, that is why I asked for confirmation before he tries it) You got me thinking again (another one of my wild ideas ). What about also asking how much free space does he have on his hdd? What do you think about creating a new partition, installing only Vista and Office 2007 and see what happens (you did suggest that earlier for the whole hdd). The PITA factor would be less than uninstalling and re-installing and reregistering everything, and if it works, he can decide if he wants to do go that route. Just my 2x1c ZAR.
  22. No, I'm not trying to do calculations. The exact sizes are not really important. When everything works normally, it should be measured in seconds, not minutes. I was just hoping that only some files were affected by this bug, and others were opening normally. Then we could have tried to see why. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case. Back to square 4 (I think we have eliminated the hdd, processor and DDE), so at least there was some progress so far. One more thing, I found this here Just check with dencorso that it is safe to do that. (and you might lose all your settings) I'm gonna sleep over it now, need some new inspiration (and it was a long day). Hopefully someone else will come up with something now, I am running out of ideas.
  23. At least I'm allowed to work on my computer again. There is still no improvement , I think we have to think of different strategies now. That will make sense, but what happen if you open a 10k file? Is that instantaneous or does that also take a long time. Are all the files from the same source (e.g. created from the same template/master file?)
  24. One quick question: Are all files taking long to open, or only some files?
  25. Hi JorgeA, Try rename the file to something like test.doc and save it in the root directory. This is not a workaround we would always want you to do, but just a test as to guide us what is wrong.
