  1. no exceptions Gape!!

    Q314941 has the VERY SAME EXACT versions of the ssdpapi.dll, ssdpsrv.exe and upnp.dll files as that of the WinME Q314757 patch.  again, it'll have to be left out of the SP.

    ...and UPNP was never included in 98.  UPNP was first introduced in WinME and improved in WinXP.

    From KB article:

    However, the UPnP service can be installed on a Windows 98-based or Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer by installing the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) client that is included with Windows XP.

  2. No Gape.  Q314941 will STILL have to be left out.  Look inside the Q314941 Win98 patch!  The files inside are WINME versions.  WinME versions I tell you!!  You include these files in your SP, you are going AGAINST your policy of not including WinME version files.  I thought you need a WinME license if you're going to put WinME versioned files into your 98se SP.

    Q314941 has ssdpapi.dll version 4.90.3003, ssdpsrv.exe version 4.90.3003 and upnp.dll version 4.90.3003.0.  They are NOT v4.10!!!  Got that Gape.  So it'll have to be left out.

    Why are you so angry? :no: I'm not stupid. You should be more polite when you write on public forums.

    Yes, I don't want to include WinME files, But this update is released for WIN98! Microsoft released it! It should be an exception.

    Again, I tell you, I don't WANT to include WinME files like DEFRAG.EXE, SPOOLSS.DLL. But why? Do you know that? To avoid WinME license requirement, also I don't want include original OS files, I TRY to include only UPDATED files. Files like DEFRAG.EXE, SPOOLSS.DLL are not released as updates from Microsoft. They requires WinME license for installing on a Win98 system. But this update (314941) doesn't require a WinME license, because it's released an update for Win98 by Microsoft.

  3. After your comments and 2.0 release, I revised the list:

    Needed updates (We haven't got them):

    * Q254660 - msmouse.vxd

    * Q265528 - vnetbios.vxd

    * Q323708 - nscirda.sys

    * Q329128 - ndis.vxd, vip.386, pppmac.vxd

    New updates (We have them, I haven't added them yet):

    * Q282949 - wbemprox.dll (Checking of WMI installation is required)

    * Q295629 - cbss.vxd

    * Q314941 - ssdpapi.dll, ssdpsrv.exe, upnp.dll (Checking of XP ICS client installation is required)

    Updates that have problems:

    * Q252187 - esdi_506.pdr - Causes lockups on some systems

  4. Service pack is a service pack, it's not a collections of free programs.

    I agree, but i posted my request after reading 'Notepad vs. Metapad' posts, so...

    Anyway, just for example, Media Player Classic could be considered an Update (don't M$ puts WMP 10 as an update ?)

    FFDSHOW too.

    Metapad will be removed on the next version.

    MPC, vlc, BSPlayer, K-Lite Codec Pack, ffdshow, LAME etc. Where can you stop?

  5. Gape posted a way to install HiS service pack 2, then

    all these people tripped out, then Gape you revised it:

    where? in this thread? the first post?

    .. how should it be installed then ??!

    no offense but i mean to say the least i'm cornfused :/

    AND --------------------------------------------------------- !!!!

    seriously, what the heck do you mean man? ..................

    Confused or angry? :(

    You should look at the first post for the latest version of the installation guide. Based on users' experience, I try to improve the installation guide. For example, after bizzybody's comment, I deleted "hotfixed" word.

  6. Wouldn't you install the videocard drivers after installing DirectX?

    Previously I was installing Winzip and the motherboard chipset and via usb drivers first, then the Microsoft greater than 32GB HD's and fdisk patch's,  then IE6SP1 (from the Microsoft cd by navigating to the setup file as the autorun doesn't work on the low, pre-video driver resolution).  Then the Windows 98 Resource Kit and the vbrun pack. Then DirectX 9.0c, DotNet 1.1 and the dotnet service pack, the Managed DirectX update, my videocard drivers.  Then the Microsoft JavaVM update.  Then install all the Windows components from Add/Remove and the 98 Plus! Pack (just the fun stuff in the Plus! Pack, no utilities).  Then Client For Microsoft Networks, but choose Windows Logon.  Then the Microsoft WDM Audio and USB patch's.  Then I would install a soundcard and drivers.  Then I would uninstall cdplayer.  Next install WMP 7.1, the encoder and WMP Bonus Pack,  a modem and drivers, my ethernet card and drivers (but hold off on pluging in the cable modem).  My printer and drivers, and scanner and drivers.  Then the fax software.  WorksSuite was next.  Then WMP 9.  Then the 98SE Service Pack.  Then ZoneAlarm.  Connect the net and register everything and do the Windows Updates.  Then do the 98SE2ME pack.  Then the native USB thing.  Done.  (Except for Firefox, Thunderbird, brower plugins, McAfee VirusScan, mp3's, games!)

    How can one get to the net in step 8 before installing the hardware and drivers?  I don't understand that change.

    Also, I know the Service Pack includes the 32GB HD, WDM and USB patch's but I install the 32GB patch in case ScanDisk decides to run on its own (usually doesn't but you never can be too careful!), and the audio/usb stuff is good to install before your audio drivers even if using the vxd version.  Especially for the Creative SbLive software.  Their newer cd's install them as part of the setup (but don't tell you) if you install the wdm's, but sometimes I copy the cd to the hard drive and change the Audio.ini to install the vxd's by default  (better dos support) and in that case Creative doesn't run the patch's.  It needs the usb patch for PlayCenter to work right.  And even the Santa Cruz wdm's need the wdm patch on before installing the drivers.

    How does my order sound?  And please explain what is mean't by moving the hardware drivers to last in your list.  I don't understand how that is possible.

    Eck, some users have problems with drivers after installing the SP. This is the reason of the revision of the installation guide.

    I revised it again. If you need, you can install your drivers on the early steps (especially mainboard drivers). Some mainboard suppliers recommend that you should install your video card drivers twice, before DirectX, and after DirectX.

    In short, install your drivers as your order, but if you have any problem (i.e. performance), reinstall your drivers again.

    Thanks.

  7. The other thing I noticed after installation was that the system claimed that there where critical updates to be had from Windows Update, which of course there wasn't. I suspect that the critical update notification program got an update or a prompt to check at the Microsoft Windows update site.

    Sorry but I don't understand this comment ?

    Could you send me your "html32.cnv" file? Thanks.

  8. However within an hour or so of not too demanding usage each time I am down to a crawl and running out of memory and have to reboot.

    I've noticed that since the install of 2.0 the disk cache size has been altered to

    to min 8192

    max 264415

    do you think this is the reason ?

    Maybe. Could you revert back your cache settings?

    Also could you list your major programs and their versions like Office 2000, IE ?...

  9. well we are starting to get some where

    it would definatley apper that the reboot problem is a result of a conflict with the grafic drivers when i removed then the computer booted as it should

    only bad news is that as soon as i reinstalled the drivers the problem came back again and the computer wouldnt boot up so right now im sitting here with no grafic drivers installed

    the uninstall has left another glitch

    Clipboard1.jpg

    note the lil black boxes that shouldnt be there

    Can you check these files:

    USER.EXE, USER32.DLL, GDI.EXE, GDI32.DLL

    What's their version numbers?

    Do you seperate have AGP/mainboard drivers? Could you re-install it? (If possible don't uninstall it, only install over it again)...

  10. ok did what you suggested hit uninstall when it finished and asked if id like to reboot i said no and then restarted manualy

    i then hit f8 and logged boot then when it wouldnt reboot normaly i booted in safe mode and moved the boot log to the desktop reinstalled the servace pack so i could boot normaly

    then restarted here is the log

    Looks like a driver issue. After uninstallation, could you re-install your VGA drivers (probably nVidia) on the safe mode?

  11. thats the problem i cant uninstall it becaues after i uninstall the computer wont reboot to finish the uninstall

    see i hit uninstall the computer does its thing asks to reboot but then i cant get any further coz the comp keeps restarting its self and i can only get in to safe mode

    First, when the uninstallation asks reboot, don't accept it, reboot manually after completing the uninstallation.

    After reboot, after immediately BIOS screen press F8 and select logged bot. And if it doesn't boot normally, restart your machine, and boot in safe mode, and save Bootlog.txt and Bootlog.prv files to another directory/partition, and send them to me.

  12. boot process begins then for no reason at all the compute automatically restarts it self I then get an error telling me the computer failed to start up correctly and I'm presented with the dos menu where I can select safe mode normal logged etc

    I select normal and again the reboot begins and again the computer restart it self and I end up back at the dos menu and the only way I can get back in to windows is to boot in safe mode

    Can you send me your BOOTLOG.TXT file? (Note that: this file logs your boot process, so it should be from unsuccessful boot.)

  13. I'd like to see some serious work put into some of OS/hardware limits we're bumping against, like getting 98se to accept 2gb of ram, 137gb hdd probs and such. I think this would help move 98se more into todays technology :D Gape & all involved, many, many thanks for the improvements in the OS you people have sweated over :thumbup

    Yes, I want to break these limits, too. Both of them are very important.

    I'll try to find a solution for the both problems.

    I think you should leave out all notepad replacements.

    Everybody knows that windows notepad sucks but I don't believe that your service pack should install a replacement.

    A lot of people think that Internet Explorer sucks.  That doesn't mean that your service pack should install Firefox or Opera.

    On my computer, I have UltraEdit installed.  In order to get UltraEdit to be the default editor in applications that have "notepad.exe" hardcoded, I've installed a stub application (provided by the UltraEdit guys) called notepad.exe that just launches UltraEdit instead.  I don't want this stub application overwritten by the service pack.

    Krick, thanks for your comments. I think to replace this Notepad replacement with my old Notepad patcher. Maybe, it was wrong idea.

    Note that: Metapad is optional, so it will not overwrite your stub application, if you don't select it.

  14. The problem is described at http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/faq.html#Q20 - it means that it is well known and no chance for improvement. Contrary to the note in the FAQ upgrade to RICHED20.DLL (5.40.11.2212, Rich Text Edit Control, v4.0) from Ofiice XP did not help.

    It means it is unusable for any language using Central European character set (codepage 1250) at least.

    This problem exists on the most of Notepad alternatives that I've tested. This problem exists on FixedSys and Terminal fonts. However, there was not problem on my system (SP 2.0 installed) with Turkish characters on Metapad.

    Do you know a small Notepad alternative which has similar look, and supports lots of languages, and doesn't have this problem?

    What about Notepad2?

    I should write that again: Metapad is optional, and is a simple NotePad product. It can be easily replaced. You don't have to add it into your localized version, too.

    It is also 3 years old unsupported product.
    Please don't forget that Windows 98's Notepad is an at least 7 years old product. :)
    So your opinion is that SESP2.0 can be installed at any stage - either immediately after fresh install of bare Windows 98 SE or on a system that is several years in use with many programs installed and all files will be in the desired state? If yes it would be great.

    I highly recommend that this pack should be installed on a freshly installed Windows 98 SE, if possible.

    My opinion is that SESP 2.0 can be installed at any stage, too. We tested it on many systems, and on many cases. But I highly recommend that you should take a backup, if you have old Windows 98 SE installation.

    Also we have a installation guide, we can improve it.
