  1. 1) After installing, it's impossible to uninstall this Service Pack.

      In the disclaimer, it's explained there is no guarantee.

      Consequently, it would be logical that the program allows the uninstall

      (like a choice in the Infex.exe) in the event of problem.

      But I suppose making an uninstaller for this pack isn't easy...

    Because of the installation method, it's difficult to create a good uninstaller. But, I'm working on it. I hope I'll make a better uninstaller on the next version.
    2) During the installing, the files explorer.exe and shell32.dll are replaced

      by these which have Windows 2000 icons.

      That means that the file shell32.dll are replaced by the file from SUPP.CAB

      instead of the file from SP2.CAB.

      The effect is the change of appearance of the icons...

      But I refused "theme of Windows 2000" in Infex.exe.

    It is not "Theme of Win 2000", it is "Win 2000 Color Scheme"... So, in fact, it's not a bug. But you're right about that Win 2000 icons also should be optional. I'm working on it now, too.

  2. It seems that if i install Win98SE SP2 on a system that has a USR winmodem installed, the modem driver begins to act up.  You can successfully dial and connect ONCE.  But if you disconnect then try to reconnect you get a  "DUN 630 error - modem not responding"

    If you reboot you can dial again, but still only once.

    I've primarily noticed on USR 5699 winmodems but also a few odd other USR winmodems.

    Do you have any thoughts or suggestions?

    Andy

    redwingtech, Could you try to re-install your (latest) modem drivers? Also, please don't miss Roving's post.

  3. I would like to know if anyone knows of a good fix for Windows 98SE. I'm unable to apply the following patch due to this abovementioned bug:

    Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-002

    Vulnerability in Cursor and Icon Format Handling Could Allow Remote Code Execution (891711)

    It causes some error that I've forgotten the exact word of, but I can barely make it into safe mode to fix the problem, and I've no wish to repeat the exercise.  :}

    Tihiy made an unofficial patch for this problem. Maybe you can apply it? Link.

    Please let us the result...

  4. Hello Gape & Co.,

    unfortunately I'm also experiencing problems with KB891711, which I think is included after SP20RC1.EXE  :(

    My question is: Can I install somehow SP2.0.2 without installing any feature included in KB891711 ? Otherwise I should Use SP20RC1 4ever.

    Please check Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs. I included a seperate uninstaller for Q891711 in the SP 2.0+.

    If this doesn't help, maybe I can make Q891711 as an seperate option on the next version.

  5. I received this in email from erpdude8:
    I did recently install Gape's W98se SP v2.02 on an old Win98se computer.  It had the HTML Help files from Win2003 SP1, not the files from the Win98 KB896358 HTML Help patch. Let's suggest that for his next release.

    Also ask him if he can include your unofficial voltrack.vxd 4.10.1999, unofficial krnl386.exe 4.10.1999 and unofficial update.sys 4.10.2223 fixes.

    I also believe that adding these files to your next SP 2.x release would be a good idea.

    Thanks MDGx, [where is the erpdude8? :)]

    This new HTML Help update looks like causes problem with old IE versions. Please, check this link.

    About unofficial fixes, I'll add them in the next version, but they'll be optional.

  6. @randiroo76073

    Thanks for your reply, and are you sure it's just for DirectX 8.1 installer ? Any other programs install fine after ? For the moment I have tested a bit and I havn't other problems but if a Microsoft program install doesn't detect correctly the version perhaps other program do the same ... if anyone has an opinion  :unsure:

    Goodbye.

    sonic, could you post the exact error message or could you put a screenshot?

  7. Yep, that fixed the problem!  Thanks.  Only thing is, now i don't get all the great new stuff you implemented in the SP explorer.exe (like the Win2k explorer.exe icon, and 256 color tray icons also seem to be disabled now).  Any hope this auto-hide taskbar issue might be resolved in a future release?  :)

    Also, since i reverted back to the original explorer.exe, will this bring back the stability issues of standard Win98SE, or are those not related to explorer.exe?

    I think original EXPLORER.EXE also works well.

    For 256-color tray icons, please look at this link.

  8. Hello.

    I have installed sesp202en patch on my Athlon AMD +2500 machine with

    Pinnacle PCTV Tuner card. I have faced the following problem and could

    find the reason at last. IE6 is installed on my system.

    Whenever I start the Pinnacle PCTV, the following error is popping up

    "Vision caused and Invalid page fault at module unknown" . I have reinstalled the software several times and also used the drivers update. I get the

    "Vision caused and Invalid page fault  in pfc.dll" when recording is started.

    The Gallery window has also not opened. After uninstalling the sesp202 patch

    the software is working normally. Now I installed sp20rc1 patch and the software

    is working normally. Please let me know the reason for this bug and fix for it.

    thank u,

    I have checked my change log between 2.0 RC1 and 2.0.2, but I didn't see anything that may cause this problem.

    Please try Fredledingue's opinion, and let us the result.

  9. I believe i may have found a small bug in the Win98SE SP v2.02.  Immediately after installing 2.02, i discovered that the auto-hide function of the task bar was behaving strangely.  If you have auto-hide enabled, and then take a non-maximized window and stretch all four sides to the very edge of the screen, The taskbar will no longer pop up.  It almost seems like the 'Taskbar always on top' flag gets turned off when the 'Auto hide' flag is turned on, but i'm just taking a guess here.  This did not happen before the installation of the Win98SE SP.  Anyone else here able to reproduce this bug?

    Probably, this problem is in the EXPLORER.EXE. If you try to revert back to the original EXPLORER.EXE, it should be fixed.

  10. I just installed 2.0.2 and I must say that I don't like the new boot logos.

    The first problem is that they're based on the XP "rolling hills" desktop, which I really don't care for, then it looks like crap dithered down to 256 colors or whatever.

    I much prefer the simpler original ones with "second edition" added to the bottom.

    They're optional. Also, you can easily delete them. (Just delete: C:\LOGO.SYS and C:\WINDOWS\LOGOW.SYS).

  11. Probably you have Windows ME (4.90.3000), not 98 SE (4.10.2222).

    I have attempted to upgrade to Windows ME and realized I lost my product key. I aborted the installation but my version has been changed to that of Windows ME.

    What can I do to correct this besides a format and re-install?

    Thanks in advance.

    This is a strange situation. I think the version of the Windows is in the USER.EXE, USER32.DLL or KERNEL32.DLL. Please, check these files' versions.

  12. Did you read the installation guide before installing the pack? You must close all open programs before installing the pack.

    Could you check that: Has your MSDOS.SYS (which is in the root folder) "SystemReg=0" line. If it doesn't exist, please add it.

    You didn't see "SP" in the Add/Remove Programs, because Registry Checker has restored your registry to the older version.

  13. Why are attrib.exe and find.com removed with version 2.0.2? :(

    ATTRIB's function is done by INF installers in 2.0.2. FIND should be already installed as default. So, there is no need to keep them.

    I am not sure if I am posting in the correct area-just joined the forum- but, I am unable to install the 98 SE SP 2.0.2.exe file.  I get an error stating that the file is not compatible with my version of windows-Windows 98 SE 4.90.3001 A.

    I really need the improvements that this servicepack will offer.

    Thanks for any response.

    Probably you have Windows ME (4.90.3000), not 98 SE (4.10.2222).

  14. - you keep shipping ADVPACK.DLL, W95INF16.DLL & W95INF32.DLL with the SP, but as I see it, these files are only needed when packing the SP with iexpress.exe.
    Yes, but what's the problem?
    - Msmouse.vxd is missing in PRESERVE.INF

    Thanks for the info. Minor problem.

    - I'd also like to customize the shutdownlogo ;)

    Excalibur007 (who is a MSFN member) has prepared the logo.

  15. 98 SE SP 2.0.2 :w00t:

    Installation and Semi-slipstreaming Guide for SP

    What's new:

    * Added MSMOUSE.VXD from Q254660.

    * Added "(Remove Only)" to the uninstall string.

    * Removed COMCTL32.DLL from the SPUNINST.INF.

    * Fixed ERRORLEVEL bug in RUNPOST.BAT.

    * Removed ATTRIB.EXE and FIND.COM from the package.

    * Fixed a minor bug in the TWEAKUI.HLP.

    * Updated boot logo and added shutdown logo.

    - Full changelog.

    Special thanks to Petr, erpdude8, hp68guser, MDGx, Lilla, Excalibur007.

    Known problems:

    * Some old audio drivers (like Crystal CS423x) are not compatible with SP 2.x. Please, update your audio drivers, if you have problem.

    * Uninstallation needs Windows 98 SE CD-ROM. It also doesn't remove all installed files. It only reverts back half of the installed files with original 98 SE files. So, I don't recommend uninstallation of the pack, if you don't have any serious problem.

    Important notes:

    * If you installed SP 2.0.1 previously, you don't have to install this version. You can install only Q254660.

    * If you want to use only Tihiy's unofficial Q891711 fix, you should uninstall official Q891711 fix from Add/Remove Programs.

    * If you want to make a localized version of this pack, you can find DDF (for making CAB files), and SED (for IEXPRESS) files as an attachment in this post. For more information about localization, you can look at Petr's post.

    * Unattended installation support is added, but it only installs "Main Updates/Hotfixes" part. For unattended installation, use this command:

    sesp202en.exe /q

    * If you like this pack and feel like contributing a little something, you can send me some donation via Paypal.

    Other works:

    * MDGx's 982ME.

    * Tihiy's Revolutions Pack.

    * Maximus-Decim's 98SE Native USB Drivers (NUSB).

    * Petr's 98FE Service Pack.
