  1. When installing the hotfixes (ONLY), the file ufd.inf gets installed also. When windows looks for suitable drivers for the external drive, this is what it decides is the best. If I remove this file windows then settles for the drivers that  came with the device. All goes well (even the drive gets seen this time) but when the drivers are installed I get a BSOD message regarding vxd usbstor (01) :(  :( .

OK Vectis, I understand. Could you write me the exact BSOD message?

  2. No luck  , the result is exactly the same. Even selecting the hotfixes only, windows still looks for drivers for a "usb mass storage driver" first, and after the drivers are installed a "usb mass storage device" is detected, then a reboot is required.

When the system updates the drivers for the "mass storage driver" it is looking for UFD.CAB, which as you know is in the SP.

After the reboot my system always hang a few times either at the drive detection stage or during the windows 98 boot splash  .

Vectis, UFD.CAB doesn't a part of "All Hot-Fixes" option. You must not select "USB 1.x Mass Storage Device Support" option when installing the SP.

  3. MS05-001 - 890175

    MS05-013 - 891781

    MS05-014 - 867282

    MS05-002 - 891711

890175: HTML Update. SP has better. It has HTML Update from Windows 2003 (MDGx's update).

891781 & 867282: IE Updates. SP does not include IE updates.

891711: MS hasn't released it yet. (Thanks erpdude8).

For IE updates, you should go WindowsUpdate site. It will detect and show related IE updates for the your system.

  4. 1.  I've tried every combination of - device drivers installed/not installed, device plugged in/not plugged in etc, but the result is always the same - windows detects a "usb mass storage device" before the SP installation, and I then have to manually install drivers for a "storage device" (1394usb). After the SP I plug in the device and again windows detects something but this time it first looks for an updated driver for a "usb mass storage driver", then it detects a "usb mass storage device", after which everything appears ok in device manager except there is no drive listed.

I can't find the file "NTMAPHLP.sys either in an installed system or in any CAB file on the windows disk. do you mean "NTMAPHLP.PDR" , if not could you please tell me exactly where it is?.

Yes, I mean NTMAPHLP.PDR, sorry for the typo.

Note: You must install only "All Hot-Fixes" option. Because "USB 1.x Mass Storage Device Support" of the SP doesn't work properly on some systems, and its titles are "USB Mass Storage Driver" and "USB Mass Storage Device". So don't Install this option: "USB 1.x Mass ..."

  5. I've now tried this with another usb device (a proper enclosure this time) and the problem remains. I am fairly convinced that the problem is with one of the hot-fixes (after all, if I dont install em - I dont get the problem) but if there are people out there who have successfully installed the SP and have an external usb 2.0 hard-drive working then please come forward and say so!!.

Horsecharles: many thanks for all your ideas.

Gape: can you offer any suggestions?.

    Sorry for the late answer.

    Some ideas:

1- Install your USB device and drivers (and insert-open it) before installing the SP.

2- Revert back the NTMAPHLP.SYS file. (You can find this file in the original Windows 98 SE CABs).

Can you write your detailed hardware list?

  6. I have French(Belgian) lnguage installed. I'v read that

one must have the english version thought I wonder if it makes a difference concerning the total freeze of my PC...

SP is only for ENGLISH version of Windows 98 SE. Sorry, but you cannot use SP on a localized Windows. Someone made a French version of the SP. But I don't remember the address of it. Please, search the forum. (Don't forget that, I only support English Windows 98 SE).

Do you know the "Safe Mode"? If your Windows doesn't open normally, you should try "Safe Mode".

  7. RC2 is ready. I think I will release it on Friday. Sorry, it is not final, but it is very stable and reliable. I strongly believe that it is latest RC release.

Someone has reported shut down problem, I'm working on it now. Does anybody have shut down problem?

  8. If it is a cumulative of all hot-fixes, and if it installs ALL these hot-fixes, I think it's not a good idea.

    Because:

1- SP 2.0 only installs necessary hot-fixes for your system. It doesn't install ALL hot-fixes without checking your system.

2- Preserving (after installing SP, Windows looks firstly SP files from SP2.CAB for installing any needed file) and slipstreaming support cannot be supported by this cumulative update.

3- Some of Microsoft's hot-fixes have problems. For example, Q311561 causes registry errors on some systems, SP 2.0 has a fix for it, so it contains a better Q311561.

Also I'm not sure about the compability of this update with the SP.

Note that SP 2.0 does NOT contain any file from Windows ME.

  9. MDCU - It completely the author's work by maximus-decim created in parallel with UnSPSE.

And I should tell - very good work :thumbup .

NUSB 2.0 - also great one :hello: - it great works with USB, 1394 and PCMCIA at the same time - this was checked up B) .

    egorz, Can you compare them?

About NUSB 2.0, does it contain any file from Windows ME?

  10. I installed SP2 yesterday trying to fix a problem with my computer seing a Orange Micro USB2 card.  Now when I go to Window Update I get a error message telling me that there is error in my computer time setting.  The time and date are correct.  Any ideas.

Could you write the exact message? Or a screenshot is better...

  11. Not yet, that will be next up.  Im just trying out sleek now.  Nothing abnormal to report with the install of SP2 RC1 on sleek, but as with chubby the 256 colour tray is not working.  FYI the older image I have with the 256 colour tray icons working is a 98lite chubby install w/ SP 1.6.2.  I will try a plain (sans 98lite) install after I get some sleep.

Probably this is a known problem, and it will be fixed on the final. Please, write your EXPLORER.EXE version before trying clean install.

  12. 256 colour tray icons doesnt appear to be working.  Used that test util soldier1st link to before.  I reverted to an older image with only SP 1.6.2 and the 256 colour tray DID work on it.  I also noticed that the reported cipher strength of IE changed from 40-bit to 128-bit after the SP install, but the version number did not change.  Win2K desktop icons are gone  :( .  I checked out the windowsupdate site and two critical patches were listed.  One was IE 6 so I know why it wasnt included in the SP.  The other was "816093: Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM)", and Im just curious why it wasnt included in the SP.  Thats all I have to report for 98lite chubby, will try a sleek install next.

Microsoft VM wasn't included, because it is a big, deprecated and IE-specific update.

Did you try the 2.0 RC1 on a freshly installed Windows 98 SE?

  13. I will add optional NTFS Read support to 98 SE Service Pack 2.0 dutch

I don't recommend to add this feature into 2.0 Dutch. All features in the service pack should be OK for general usage. Third party NTFS utilities doesn't work well on some systems. Just my 2 cents.

If we find a good NTFS utility and we can get permission from its producer, perhaps I can add NTFS support in the SP 2.1.

  14. Installation Guide

    Prerequites:

    - Windows 98 SE English (4.10.2222A).

    - 32 MB of RAM minimum.

    - At least 40 MB free hard disk space.

    Installation order:

*1- Install Windows 98 SE (with or without 98lite).

    *2- Install IE 6.0 SP1.

3- Install all newest drivers of your hardware. If you have Intel chipset, you have to install Intel Chipset Software Utility and Intel Application Accelerator 2.3. If you have VIA chipset, you have to install VIA 4-in-1.

    *4- Install DirectX (9.0c).

    *5- Install MS Office.

    *6- Install/Use 98lite to remove any features.

    7- Close ALL open programs.

    8- Install latest SE SP.

*9- Install critical updates from WindowsUpdate.

*10- Install Maximum-Decim's latest Native USB Drivers.

    *11- Install MDGx's latest 98SE2ME.

*12- Install Tihiy's latest Revolutions Pack.

13- Update or re-install drivers of your hardware, if you have any problem.

A freshly installed Windows 98 SE is highly recommended. If Windows asks for rebooting during step 8, don't accept it. You should reboot only after "Installation is now complete" message.

    * = Optional.

    Update Guide

    From 2.0.x to 2.1:

DON'T UNINSTALL THE PREVIOUS VERSION OF THE SP.

    1- Close ALL open programs.

    2- Install latest SE SP.

    *3- Re-install MDGx's latest 98SE2ME.

    *4- Re-install Tihiy's latest Revolutions Pack.

    * = If you previously installed it.

    Slipstreaming Guide

2.x supports a special slipstreaming method. Only hotfixes can be integrated into your Windows 98 SE Setup from the start. Other features like TweakUI cannot be integrated.

1- Copy \WIN98 directory with its contents from CD into your hard drive (like D:\WIN98).

2- With Winzip, Winrar or PowerArchiver, extract SP2.CAB from SESP21.EXE into a temporary directory.

3- Extract all files into D:\WIN98 from SP2.CAB. (For example, you should see D:\WIN98\ACPI.SYS file after extracting SP2.CAB).

4- Use D:\WIN98\SETUP.EXE for starting Windows 98 Setup. Windows 98 Setup will use these hotfixed files automatically during installation.

  15. Finally... :thumbup
